Hello folks, I am a low level Z (usually E rank but pushing D).
I have a question specific to ZvZ. Sometimes I get drone scouted by a Zerg, but I never try to drone scout a Zerg. I've always believed the most effective method is to avoid losing mining time/minerals by sending your first overlord immediately to one of the bases closest to you and then follow-up by sending your second overlord to the other base closest to you, and eventually sending your first overlord to the cross position.
It just seems to me that in a mirror match it cannot possibly be worth losing hundreds of minerals for the sake of a faster scout. But yet I do run into players who send their drone to my base. And I'm not talking about sunk rushing. It's specifically just to scout and then leave. Maybe this is worth if you are doing a one base zergling rush?
Do any experienced Zergs here use drone scouts or should I stick with keeping them on the mineral line for any BO?

for a question as straightforward as this, you'll be better off just answering it for yourself by looking at some recent pro zvzs than just going with one of the multiple contradictory responses you'll likely get here, some of which will be wrong

Well, you are not losing "hundreds of minerals" if you drone scout in ZvZ. I think you might be over-estimating how much it affects your economy.
Some builds will suffer if you Drone scout because you simply cannot afford it, such as 9 pool -> Lair where you would miss critical timings because of the scout Drone not mining for you. So there is an example where your assessment is spot on. I mean, you still could send a Drone scout but it is self-defeating with that build. If you do something like 2 Hatch Exp then Drone scouting might be advised or at least 'not bad', because information is vital in that situation. If your opponent is doing a rush then you can find out about it and prepare accordingly.
The more you play the match-up the more things like this will become questions for you to answer yourself according to your chosen style of play. Some things that are confusing to you now will become more illuminated in time and with adequate 'study'. Once you know the major build orders you can start to look at specifics and decide whether you value the economic advantage or the information advantage. Both can be good according to your build.
I hope this helps

Usually in most scenarios you dont ever need to scout your opponent with a drone, because all decisions about your BO are being made before you can properly scout. At the same time you get mineral mine disadvantage in mirror scenarios.
Most common cases: You are going to play 12 hatch expo and your opponent 9 pool - undependable of your scouting he will destroy your hatchery or kill a lot of drones or force you to cancel your hatchery and go sunken defence - but still he is ahead.
You are going 12 hatch expo and your opponent 12 pool expo - you are ahead undependable of scouting - just need to scout with your single first ling to properly understand id he is dronening, massing lings or making something special
You are going 12 pool vs 12 hatch - you are behind and you will ez scout with lings. Etc etc.

Thank you G0rynich that is very helpful advice and puts the matchup into perspective a lot.
I know it is a specific question, but I'm sure it is something every zerg tries to deal with in their own way and I would like advice from people who know what they are doing more than I do. Actually, one of the reasons I decided to post a question in a thread is because I recently watched a pro ZvZ in either KSL or ASL and Artosis commented that "if you scout with a drone in ZvZ then I mean... what are you really doing?"
But then I get drone scouted by players with twice my APM, so I decided to ask.
