Introduction: This will be a 8 player invitational tournament hosted by myself and whatever helpers I can rally. Players will be invited based on the wishes of the mining contributors. The prize pool will be crowd funded through cryptocurrency mining. This works by donating some of your computers processing power. Monero coins are generated and these can then be converted to a real money prize for the tournament winners.
The tournament will be scheduled and official invitations will be sent out once the tournament is funded! The funding goal will be 0.3 Monero coin (currently $100 USD value). The tournament may take a month to fund, but this greatly depends on the amount of mining power donated by the community.
About me: I've played broodwar most of my life. I've followed the foreign starcraft scene through much of that time, (especially since remastered). I'm also a cryptocurrency enthusiast. It would bring me joy if this project could support the foreign starcraft scene. I was previously a B team coach for clan [SK] in PATL.
The CryptoCup Format:
-This will be a 8 player single elimination tournament. -Players will be chosen by the miners. -The map pool will be a selected from ladder maps being played when the tournament is held. -First round will be Bo3, semifinals and finals will be Bo5.
Invitations voted by miners so far: (Last updated: Feb.20th) Contributed mining hashes will decide tournament invitations (see below how to vote with mining hashes).
Reserve list: (These players will start to be invited if any of the above are unavailable to play.) *9th-sAviOr[gm] *10th-Nal_rA *11th-Oops]Reach 12th-Terror 13th-eonzerg 14th-Ty2 15th-kogeT 16th-jaeyun +Jaeyun 17th-Bakuryu 18th-zzzero 19th-Entaroadun
* = Korean Professional Player (I will try to be ready to extend the invitation, but it may not be realistic.) ** =Retired player (may not be available to play), please make a post if I am mistaken.
-All games must be played on Starcraft: Remastered
-Play on the Battle.net US EAST server, unless there's a problem in which case you must arrange it with your opponent.
-If we ask to cast your series, you must allows obs.
-During the first round, players will be disqualified if they haven't shown up after 15 minutes. Further rounds will be after 10 minutes.
-Replays should be saved as they will need to be submitted.
Prizepool: (Goal = 0.3 Monero (or 0.3 XMR) = roughly $100 USD Current Monero Price) Last updated progress: (0.3 XMR)
Mined Monero will be converted to USD using an exchange and paid out on Matcherino. Winner of the tournament takes 100% of prizepool.
(Being paid in Monero is also an option if desired!)
Why Monero (also called XMR): With proper computer hardware, configuration, and time there are more profitable mining methods, however, Monero is ideal because it can be simply CPU mined and any computer can do it! Inclusion is a major goal, since this is a crowd funded project.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE --> : ------------------------------------------------------------------- -Snip- - The longer you can run this in the background the more it will help! -------------------------------------------------------------------- This link will begin using some of your CPU's processing power to mine Monero.
Seeing this means your miner is working! H/S is how fast you're mining (Hashes/second). The slider controls CPU resources used. Cpu threads (cores) used can also be adjusted.
How to suggest a player to be invited? To vote for your favorite player to be invited to the tournament you must edit the link. Simply change "VoteHERE" to your players name and re-enter the link into your address bar! Keep in mind you should be choosing someone who still actively plays and would attend a tournament like this .
Troubleshooting: Some anti-virus software may reject this link. Cryptocurrency is sometimes mined without the users consent on a malicious website.
You could try running the link in incognito mode (google chrome).
Advanced mining for Power-users:
If you find yourself especially interested in mining cryptocurrency, there are more powerful and efficient methods of contributing. If you are interested in configuring a very powerful GPU mining software, I recommend XMR-Stak. This software is open source and reasonably easy to setup (see the guide).
You don't need a super computer to mine, although obviously a purpose built machine is better at it. Even a tablet or smartphone can mine a small amount, although laptops and desktops are preferable.
Running this application on your computer will cause it to use a small amount more electricity, but only about 50 watts extra for an average desktop PC (Less than leaving an older style light bulb on). There is a slider bar to have the mining application utilize a smaller amount of your CPU.
this looks fun, i wonder who everybody will vote for and if some real miner will jump into this xD. i just pray hard that i get voted :D you cashout on korean exchange for that added premium bonus? also is there an option to receive the prize as monero?
I was about to ask, how intensive is this on the computer / hardware if you are mining constantly? And at what rate per person / hr or whatever does the mining really benefit? I won't mind helping, but I am a little concerned about the stress it causes to the machines.
I think it is useless to run this at home, because you can just take money that you will pay for electricity and donate it. Personally, I will open this miner at work, so I won't need to pay for it.
I was about to ask, how intensive is this on the computer / hardware if you are mining constantly?
The application has a slider that will control how much of the CPU resources are utilized. The default is 50%, this shouldn't be exceptionally stressful - cpu's are designed to do work. How many of us are concerned about being on discord, playing a song on youtube and gaming at the same time?
Even in a worst case scenario, maybe an old dusty laptop with a cat sleeping on top... modern CPU's are designed to cut back performance once they're reaching higher temperatures. This is called thermal throttling.
I think it is useless to run this at home, because you can just take money that you will pay for electricity and donate it.
You are correct, for people paying their own electricity costs and using a much older (less efficient) computer this operation could be more of a break even. It might be better for these people to only contribute while they're already using the computer for other tasks.
Is there any way to view the overall leaderboard? The link in the OP only shows people who are currently being mined for. If someone stops mining they disappear from the list.

A given miner will disappear from the list while inactive, but the total # of hashes it has completed is retained. This means you can start/stop mining (voting) for your player over multiple days and it will still be counted/culmulative.
I've spoken to the operator of moneroocean.stream about slightly modifying the open source code for the mining pool, but that's still a work in progress lol. I've been keeping track of the # of hashes (votes) for individual players and updating the forum post with a ranking list.

I disagree, I have actually crunched the numbers with the value + rate of mining vs my hydro bill and it was showing profit. There are websites available to help identify the margin. Although that was done with a different cryptocurrency.
The thing is, many people won't get on paypal and actually donate money to something like this, but I could see people running an application while they sleep and dealing with that "donation" when it comes time to pay the power bill.
Maybe if we were playing Starcraft 2 people wouldn't mind as much since their parents are paying the bill anyway. (trollface)
Naturally this tournament is a new idea and a bit of an experiment. I'm very encouraged by the amount of positive feedback and donated computing power .
I think it's important to start small and make sure it can happen in a realistic time frame. I've decided to adjust the target prizepool to 0.3 Monero (30% of the original goal of 1 Monero.) This is the smallest payout the mining pool will allow. I've also altered the payout structure (winner takes 100%). I've also decided it's necessary to reduce the size of the tournament from 16 invitations to only 8.
I would have liked an "invitational tournament" to have a larger prize pool, however, this also needs to happen in a realistic amount of time . Please spread the word, keep the contributions coming!
I'm frequently getting "error: pool rejected hash" message. Am I doing something wrong?
It could be due to high latency between you and the web miner. Is your browser up to date?
Does this mean that I can get my GPU mine coins, just need to do some configuration?
Yes if you have a reasonably modern GPU (with 2+ GB of RAM), it should be able to mine Monero. There is a guide to setting up a command line based GPU miner (XMR-stak) in the OP. This software is widely used and open source.
I would happily offer help, contact me on liquidpedia discord if you like.
So this is based on number of instances someone has mined, not the actual amount mined? I ask because I started a lot of instances (3 or 4).
It's based on total hashes towards a given name. Total hashes are viewable on the link to the mining pool, but will only be visible while someone is actively mining towards a given name. The Overall hashes (votes) towards a given name will be retained even if nobody mined towards that name for a few days.
While running the miner you will be given a hashrate (H/S or Hashes per second), this is how fast you are adding votes. It's also important to remember to change "VoteHERE" on the link, this will identify your miner as making hashes (votes) towards the specified name.
You could run multiple instances of the miner, but your computers overall cpu power would still be split between them.
Anyone who really wants to rack up some hashes (votes), should setup a GPU miner. I would be happy to help!
To anyone watching the Current Monero Price you will have noticed a major dip. This is quite normal in this market and is affecting all cryptocurrencies, not just Monero. The price will bounce back just as quickly, we have time!
I appreciate whoever has been voting for retired players and korean professionals , they may not play in our tournament but i'll do what I can to get the invitations out when it comes to that step!
We need everyone to continue to the contributions if it's possible for you to do that . Keep up the good work!
I wonder how much more H/S can be mined if a GPU like my GTX 970 is set up with XMR-Stak compared to CPU. The average H/S i got with 100% load on CPU was around 50.
Are you doing this specifically for proof of concept? Anyone in crypto has had a great year and I can't really understand why you can't get someone to send you 30 bucks of Monero for a prizepool.

Yes, it's an attempt to try something new . A relatively small prize pool can still attract some of the best foreigners. I really wanted to see if running an event this way was viable.
The mining/fundraising period also serves as a time to build interest/investment in the tournament .
I've got a question, what does difficulty means and how does that affect the minning? https://moneroocean.stream/#/ports i set up my GPU to mine, but i don't know which port should i use to get maximum performance, i used the port 10016, but i don't think it's giving me that much H/S (average 300-320 or so), i expected a little bit more, like 370-400
If you have a very high hashrate you can increase difficulty by changing the port you connect to the pool with. It's not very important though because stak miner will automatically adjust the difficulty to most efficient level.

What GPU are you using?
i'm using MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G, i was told that this card doesn't have a great performance at mining, but i expected a little bit more t.t, well, doesn't matter anyways it works better than just using the cpu, it might be enought to get the player i want to top 8, i hope.

I set mine to port 80 and it automatically changes the difficulty soon after starting xmr-stak based on how many h/s i am getting.
If you are using xmr-stak to gpu mine, try changing the values of the threads and blocks in NVIDIA.txt. On my 960m threads 32 and blocks 5 seems to work the best.
According to this you should be able to get 500+ with a 970.
Also there's a 10 minute video here if anyone wants to compile their own xmr-stak to get rid of the 2% donation that it takes by default. I followed it and its really easy.
Instructions are in the video description if you don't want to watch the entire video.
Also a small tip for those using xmr-stak, it requires 2mb of cpu cache per cpu thread. So although I have an i7 with 8 possible threads, my cpu works best with only 3 threads because it only has 6MB of cache.
Xmr-stak by default will configure itself to mine with both CPU and GPU simultaneously. There will be a Cpu.txt that can be edited to remove some or all of the cores for CPU mining.
I've discovered many companies that are offering a free trial to allow cloud computing on their servers. I think I will test them for Monero CPU mining to boost the project a little .
We have a website which will also boost publicity a little:
On February 11 2018 00:48 sas.Sziky wrote: time limit have ?
the whole idea is to mine cryptocurrency to get to 0.3 moneros which is around 100 USD, that's the goal, i believe it's at 13% of the goal at the moment, so there is a lot more hashes to mine, So there isn't a time limit, but there is a goal.
P.D: how is that you haven't improved your english yet? you have been in the community for so many years man. take an intensive english class and in 3-4 months you would be able to get easily to CEF B2 or so
There is no time limit, we'll continue the fundraising until the 0.3 Monero is reached. I'm currently looking for ways to promote and increase fundraising, I would like to get there sooner :D.
Anyone's input or willingness to help is of course welcome.
Just a reminder that this tournament is still for real, we're still fundraising, I'm still promoting it when I have time . Definitely want to do this as soon as possible, we need as many of you to contribute as possible!
Cryptocurrency markets are booming, it's possible our prize pool will grow bigger than originally planned .
You are correct, fundraising efforts have been pretty modest. A lot of people like the idea, but not enough have wanted to put effort into fundraising. I do appreciate everyone who has contributed though .
If the cryptomarkets do well, the prizepool could grow a lot by the time we recieve the payout.
If anyone would like to boost the prizepool I've setup the official matcherino.
If you send monero to the listed address I would also include it in prizepool, I would love to list contributors in the main post as well as giving them a shout-out during casting. You would have to send me a Teamliquid or discord message with the amount you've sent though, since monero is a privacy coin :D.
Hey everyone, I apologize the tournament went cold. Work got busy and the cryptocurrency markets crashed pretty hard, turning our raised funds into peanuts. Luckily the markets have now recovered and are surging upwards !
I've been continuing to mine and increase us closer the goal (which we have now reached.) I would have liked to continue the crowd funding effort and promoting the tournament, but at least now we are able to collect a payout and proceed to hold the tournament.
I would love some help to cast the games. Is the community okay if we pick up where we left off?
I can start sending out invitations to the players who received the most votes during the active crowd funding period.

Russell are you short on prize pool money from the cryptos?.
i thought this was a forgotten thread, so I stopped mining. I'm glad this is still on. I hope everything goes well, also I really hope that the player I mined for shows up (I managed to get him to top 8 all by myself haha)
