MBC Official: Gretech really doesn't understand how TV stations work
- The negotiations between the two sides haven't been going so smoothly; why do you think this is the case? MBC: Frankly, they just don't understand our company's situation. We really want to agree to their terms, but there's a few details that we cannot accept.
- Gretech's official said that their terms were very lenient; is this true? MBC: That was concerning SPL, but their stance on individual leagues is totally different. Since both sides signed a nondisclosure agreement, I can't really reveal everything. Their fee for the live broadcasting of individual league matches on just Friday was reasonable, but their asking price for broadcasting twice a week was far too expensive, making it hard for us to agree with them.
Note: Gretech exposed a portion of the talks to the media on Oct. 16. According to these terms, the fee for hosting the tournament was 1 won, and the fee for broadcasting it was 100 million won. Gretech claimed that they had the same terms for SPL, MSL, and OSL; SPL runs for about 10 months, and individual leagues run for about 3 months.
- Right now, KeSPA has already paid a significant sum for broadcasting rights; is this right? MBC: According to the terms, if we integrate both the team league and individual league, we will be paying more than KeSPA is asking for. Moreover, the KeSPA-affiliated agency of IEG will be in charge of the broadcast fees, and we will provide for broadcast television post-production costs. However, to think that Gretech would help subsidize a portion of our live broadcast post-production costs is an extravagant fantasy.
- Do you believe that the other side's terms are harsh? MBC: Right now, we practically break even on broadcasting Brood War, so we're just happy we're not going into the red. The primary audience for Starcraft is the youth of age 13-18, so advertising doesn't have much effectiveness. And the tournament prize money and raffle prizes at the finals, with broadcasting and related expenses, make it impossible to make a profit.
If we were to actually agree to their terms, our company would feel enormous pressure. At the same time, we'd have to keep in mind that we're almost losing money in order to broadcast these matches, instead of profiting. They just don't understand the real situation in TV companies; they act like just because we're a for-profit TV company, we actually make a profit.
- Last time at the parliamentary hearing, the other side said that broadcasting Starcraft matches was "illegal". You felt wronged, correct? MBC: Correct, I felt very wronged. At least up until now, we couldn't believe they could say something like that. MBC has always paid KeSPA broadcast fees, and KeSPA is a subdivision of the Korean Ministry of Culture. We paid dues to a government department; if that is illegal, I really don't know what's legal.
- Is this problem caused by your not having received rights from Blizzard? MBC: At the very beginning, we got the rights for broadcasting Starcraft from Blizzard's Korean partner, Hanbitsoft, and Hanbitsoft is a member of KeSPA. So, are the leagues we got permission to hold then illegal leagues? However, from the beginning of the negotiations until now, Gretech thinks that our leagues are illegal, which directly hurt the negotiation process. If we continue like this, we may not have any choice but to terminate the negotiations, and this would damage Gretech a lot.
- Recently, there's been much talk of forcing the leagues through; what do you think about this? MBC: We don't know how this round of talks will end, so as to not prevent [casual] gamers from viewing these leagues, we have to force the new season of MSL to be broadcast.
- Is there still room for the negotiations between the two sides? MBC: There still [should be]. We would have no problem if the other side revealed the terms of the arrangement. However, as the television station that broadcasts the team leagues, we shouldn't have to suffer the danger of losses for just this, right? The costs of broadcasting the league games is estimated to be in the tens of billions of won or more, and with such a huge market size solving many problems should be quite easy.
Really though, it's not that we don't want to pay this much to them [Gretech], but rather because if we did comply [with Gretech's demands], it would be absolutely impossible for us to broadcast the leagues afterward.
Finally, I hope Gretech does not think that my television company is so simple to run. We are competing cable stations and Korea Electric is our partner, and we both promote Starcraft leagues.
Therefore, they [Gretech] should first do some good market research before making a final decision.
"At the very beginning, we got the rights for broadcasting Starcraft from Blizzard's Korean partner, Hanbitsoft, and Hanbitsoft is a member of KeSPA. So, are the leagues we got permission to hold then illegal leagues? However, from the beginning of the negotiations until now, Gretech thinks that our leagues are illegal, which directly hurt the negotiation process. So much for blizzard fanboys saying KeSPA did not respect blizzard IP rights from the very beginning...
I think they're trying to force Gretech to better terms via PR. But I certainly hope this ends well. I didn't know MBC isn't doing so well. Maybe they need some additional form of revenue..
We hear another story and since there is an NDA agreement we can't really tell anything but speculate on what the real terms are. But it seems Hanbitsoft was Korea's partner for Blizzard then I don't know why Blizzard is claiming they haven't been paid unless Hanbitsoft kept the money to themselves.
And I don't know much about television companies but if a TV station barely makes break even on a show (or w/e the bw leagues are called) would a tv company continue broadcasting the show? This part seems kind of fishy to me but other than that seems that MSL just has it rough with the competition of other TV companies and with Gretech demanding stuff too it is understandable that MBC is annoyed with how Gretech is handling MBC.
I'm glad to hear the words from MBC themselves. It does seem right, there profit in BW is good but they sort of have to do other stuff as well in BW itself. There team, the league etc...
I really hope this sorts out because we need it to work out.
Considering that MBC is a sorta-public broadcaster, it's not inconceivable that it doesn't make much profit. Heck - public broadcasters in other countries even are subsidized by government.
I am curious to know more about what the Hanbitsoft/Kespa/Blizzard deal was, though.
I actually wouldn't be incredibly surprised if their profit margins on the Starcraft leagues were pretty thin. If you think about the productions costs, the fact that most of the commercials are either for F2P MMO's or something along those lines, and the fact that they don't make money selling tickets to games, there's really not a whole lot of room for profit there. As for whether a TV company would broadcast something that barely makes them money, it certainly would if it was popular enough to draw audiences to that channel and potentially keep them there for other types of programming.
Hard to pin down one villain in this whole mess of negotiations, but I want to take sides with the people that are giving me awesome televised SCBW matches.
If we were to actually agree to their terms, our company would feel enormous pressure. At the same time, we'd have to keep in mind that we're almost losing money in order to broadcast these matches, instead of profiting. Gretech is clearly completely inexperienced and has no idea what they are even doing in this situation. The only possible reason Blizz have for choosing this, of all companies, to control SC in Korea is simply that they are easily controllable. If what MBC say is true (and i don't see why they would be lying they have not have said anything PR wise up till now) then i think Gretech would not even win in court regardless and it's just one big bluff. Just a shame we have to put up with their incompetence for SC2.

Where do I get it? (No sarcasm intended)
More reason to learn how to advertise over-hyped games. LLLOOOOOOOOOLLLLL Offense intended.
Wait, Gretech has a "Global" Starleague? where it is totally convenient for non-Koreans to participate? Why is it that they choose to put their "Global" Starleague in KOREA? Is it possible that because of BW SC2 would be so over-hyped? They also offer the "best multimedia player in the world", GOM media player, which is a complete piece of crap worse than windows media player, to watch SC2, i mean what doesn't spell Gretech's total competence in running proper e-sports.
i dunno, zenmaster is saying their streaming service is superior to gretech's so i assume there's free hq stream and free vods for the world since that's what necessary to be better than the gsl

Free live stream and vods are available at sc.plu.cn, if you understand Chinese. And they are not pirating, they got the approval from OGN and MBC long time ago with nearly no broadcasting fee, since the website company is pretty poor. And also they are putting their own ads between games for profits. If Teamliquid wants to do that with English commentary, I am sure OGN and MBC will only charge very little, maybe none. It's just that nobody in English speaking country has the passion to commentate every live Proleage game.
After all, there are no foreigners in Proleague, OSL, and MSL, so it does not make sense for MBC and OGN to hire English commentator to commentate the game.
On the other hand, you can not restream GSL even without your own commentary and ads.

I think it's insane that Blizzard figures it has any right to control what people do with the game after they bought it. Copyright ensures they get paid for their work if anyone wants to play the game. Why should those rights transfer to video of people playing the game? Adobe does not have any right to images created by Photoshop and I think that's a pretty fair analogy. Guess I'm old fashioned.
The original article also had this table showing the IP fees paid by MBC over the past 3 years as well as the leagues operated over the years, the IP Status associated with them and who had Rights from Blizzard.
Then again, we've known for a while that MBCGame was pretty poor.
10 million won is about $9,000 so if its for each season of the MSL/OSL it seems pretty reasonable, however if its for each time it airs that seems like it could get pretty steep. I am assuming its per episode which is what is haltering the negotiations but its not specified in the translation.

It was starting to become evident around the NATE MSL though I'm sure the problems ran deep before that. A lot of the NATE MSL broadcasting seemed kind of rushed in terms of trying to broadcast it in as little airtime as possible (cutting off intros, camera angles, etc). It just felt a little less formal than what we've seen MSLs traditionally is. Compared to OGN, MBCGame seems to be faltering quite a bit though they've seem to have found a new balance for now.

Photoshop/AutoCad/3DsMax have commercial licenses that allows you to make money off the work that you create with those tools. Technically, without the commercial license, you are not allow to sell your work for profit.

-.- they said the price for 1 day is reasonable but from the sounds of it gretech massively upped the price for a 2nd day (which a starleague really needs) just to reduce the competition for GSL. If you want bullshit PR just read some of gretech's releases, they aren't acting in the interest of e-sports by trying to eliminate competition.
So personally I'd take MBC's side with a grain of salt (why would they broadcast something that's not profitable?), it does sound like Gretech is making up this "you didn't have the rights to do this" argument. Though if Gretech, not Hanbitsoft, is now Blizzard's main liaison in Korea, maybe they think they can do this... not sure what the legal implications are though.
TBH I thought Hanbitsoft was just the distributor for the Korea area. What distributers do, correct me if I'm wrong cause I may be, is form a contract with a company (Blizzard) to distribute the product (The Starcraft CD) to retailers, who then sell it to consumers in an area (Korea) the company (Blizzard) has little/no access to. The distributer then get's a profit chuck based off of sales in that area. Does anyone know if their contract included broadcasting rights for pro-games?

I don't know if they really do or not but I'm just saying. Might be a loss-leader thing going on too like some other poster mentioned.
Well MBCGame is one of most poorly funded teams in proleague. That's why they had to sell Bisu and July in 2007/08. And last year another big paycut for Sea et. al to save money for the MBCGame channel.

Not to mention this money would directly be going to make the GSL itself better, which is the fucking competition. Isn't this somehow monopolistic on people just playing games? I Hope this does go to court because i really don't think it would be decided in the public interest for Blizzard to be totally controlled every aspect of people simply playing their game.
Just imagine if they tried to implement this shit from the beginning of the scene, in 99.... none of it would have existed anywhere near to the form it did, if at all. Was even less money then than there is now. If baffles me Gretech/Blizzard thinks they can somehow make a long term profit from this.
I don't see why you guys aren't criticizing MBC enough. For a long time, I believe that people see MSL as the inferior league compared to OSL. You don't see OSL complaining about fees or any of that. That just means they're the more successful of the two.
MBC is a punching bag here for a good reason. I think some of you guys have to understand the business side of things, and it is very cutthroat, unfair, and only the tough, resilient companies get to stay. In a survival of the fittest setting, MBC should honestly be weeded out if they don't improve. I don't see them as a victim. I see this as a wake up call for MBC if they don't up their game. Their competitor, OSL, is wiping the floor with them since the BW progaming industry started.

What are they supposed to if the industry they are in just isn't as popular as it once was? Unless there's some hidden market out there they need to get to, it's no fault of their own. OSL will always be considered more prestigious because its older.

Actually MBCGame has improved a lot since they first started out. Although OSL is more prestigious cos it's the oldest, since the last few years players now consider MSL very important as well. And MBC isn't just abt MSL. They provide so much more than that in terms of gaming entertainment and other e-sports related content.

I'm not arguing that they didn't contribute enough, because they certainly have. But, I look at MBC's channel stream, their commercials, their quality control, how they present themselves, and it is poor compared to OGN's. Anyone remember Silver vs Savior? Poorest finals I have ever seen. How about CJ vs Hwaseung finals? They have always picked that location for their finals, plus barely any audience.
OGN is really defining itself as a leader as a gaming channel. They have better, unique advertisements, while MBC's changes all the time and just catches with current trends. I see OGN's ads and I always think that they're setting the standards high, and they're much more memorable.

I would think that their lack of funding holds them back in this aspect, assuming this is true. It would certainly make sense, if they don't make enough of a profit to make the MBC channel as high quality as the OSL. As one of the above posts said, they've been cutting funding on their team as well.
For those of us newer to the scene, it would really help to have some more info about who the heck some of these organizations are, and what the history is.

MBCGame is but one small subsidiary of the MBC parent broadcasting company and therefore not one of the better funded ones. OGN certainly has nicer presentation but MBCGame has over the past few years made some of the most entertaining game-related shows. Eg. So I don't think that their programme quality is that poor compared to OGN's.

MBC and OGN are the two main E-Sports broadcasting companies; Gretech is a third, slightly less important (but gaining) company. KeSPA, the Korean E-Sports Association, is in charge of all the BW stuff (and other professional gaming in Korea) too.
