Its in the moderate future, Earth is polluting normal Eearth, Mars is being terraformed and they have huge mining operations going on for water Ceres, who are dependend on deliveries from the planets.
These 3 factions are in a cold war and then something happens that tips the balance.
Give it a try, it got better with each episode and the 4th one was pretty crazy Its not episodic and the style is a bit like BSG if that helps
It's based on the best-selling and really good novel series by James S.A Corey (pen name for Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), and the adaption is -- surprisingly -- both very faithful to the source material, and really good. This is easily the best "hard" sci-fi show in a bunch of years, which is a bit surprising considering that Syfy are behind the wheel. Really impressed by the first four episodes, and unless the quality drastically drops off (strongly doubt that), it's only going to get better.
Ep1 was pretty enjoyable, firing up Ep2. This is probably a book series I would like to read. I'll have to put it on a list. I think this show is what I wished Dark Matter had been.
edit: Definitely a must-watch for all sci-fi fans. If I had friends I would recommend it to them.

If you have a Kindle or the like I'll buy you the first book
The audio book are also very well done with the exception of number 4, which has a different narrator. But god bless Jefferson Mays, who does his best to pull off every accent and voice. Its a great way to enjoy the books if you don't have time to read.
I really like the hard sci-fi of the series that deals with the issues of gravity, making food in space(its really hard), ship to ship combat beings super crazy dangerous and stupid. In a world without "shields", super metals and magic "tractor beams", the greatest weapon is a huge rock with an engine strapped on the back. And you only need one to destroy a planets bio sphere.
I didn't know the books existed before the tv series came out (kinda like with GoT, lol) but now i am interested in it. The only thing which kinda makes me question if i should read it are a lot of people saying the series gets worse with each book. Would you say this is true? On the other hand a lot of people said the same about asoiaf after book three, which i didn't really agree with either soooo....
That is not true at all, imo. If anything the serious gets better and more fun after each book, with the 4th book being the “weakest”. I know some people have problem with the series because “people do irrational, stupid things that make no sense” because a lot of hard sci-fi fans are used to everyone being a rational actor.
That is one of the main reasons why I like the series. The science is grounded and humanity is humanity. We didn’t magically fix our social problems, people being short sighted and people having the best intent but disagreeing on how to solve a problem.
Book 4-5 are a lot of set up to a bigger story and don't have the super satisfying resolutions of the first 3.
Ok thanks. I guess i will just give it a try then Just one question (without spoilering :D)
When you say they do "irrational, stupid things that make no sense". Is that in like 'to advance the plot no matter what' ? Or can you at least see the motivation for these actions. Personally i dislike the former quite a bit too, at least if it's too obvious.

The irrational, stupid things they do are very much in character.
Yes. The things they do only seems irrational and stupid because the reader has far more information and perspective than the characters taking the actions. The characters 100% believe they are doing the right thing for themselves and the people they want to protect.
The other nice thing about the series is that Holden isn’t this perfect human and makes bad calls. But it is totally believable and you still want to cheer for him. He isn’t the best at any specific “skill” but the series does a great job of showing that leadership and trustworthiness are valuable things. And he is very funny.
And some of the side characters in the later books are amazing. Chrisjen Avasarala one of the most constantly enjoyable characters in the series.

Thank you kindly, that's very generous of you but I snatched the series up already. Gonna start reading after I wrap up this third season of Luther (brilliant BBC detective show that I highly recommend if you like the genre) which is currently working on its fourth season.
Yeah, I also read the books and I was waiting for the TV Show.
I was a bit surprised to see that it actually delivered. I had very little faith in Syfy and they proved me wrong. Episode 4 is really fucking good. I can't wait to see more. No spoiler ofc, but to all of you who haven't read the books: a lot of crazy shit is coming, buckle up.
Definitely the best sci-fi series since BSG based on the four episodes so far. And since it's based on a book series I'm hopeful it could actually have a sensible series arc -- something that BSG mostly lacked. Though I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up for another B5 quite yet.
The hard sci-fi is really nice change of pace: No artificial gravity, accelerating that takes time and effort, mass drivers etc. The production values are also great. Especially episode 4 was very good.
I may have to start listening to the audiobooks as well.
yeah was really happy i saw this thread and started watching it only wish it been out for like 3-4 season and there heaps of episodes to watch, first 4 were crazy good decent acting, solid story line, and the look like they have spent some decent cash on production/sets ect
Ok, so its not Game of Thrones in space. In the fact that they do not murder main characters at a whim to advance the plot. Unless they go crazy and don't follow the later books. But it is very, very, very good.
Watched all 4 episodes I really like the series so far. My question is what the hell was going on in the first part of the first episode with the girl?

It definitely doesn't have much in common with game of thrones other than its good and its based on a novel series. That said I do agree, this show looks like it has potential to be the best hard sci-fi series so far if it can keep delivering.
Thanks for the tip! I now watched all 4 episodes that are available right now and I have to say I really enjoyed them, The expanse seems to be a level abvove other scifi shows that premiered this year like Dark Matter or Kill Joys.

Well I really think the 1st for episode hacve a GoT feel to them. Introduces some characters, then kill them. Heavy politic tensions, rebel faction, ... Somewhat violent.
So I maintain that it's really GoTesque right now, but I haven't read to book so it might not be the case after everything has settle.
hah....once more I have to thank TL for pointing out an amazing tv series to me
So...Thank you, TL!
OT: enjoyed the 4 episodes that are available so far immensely, would recommend it to everyone into sci-fi stuff, you don't have to be part of the crowd that enjoys "hard" sci-fi to be immediately sucked into this world.
Well, leaves me me pining for more is all I'm gonna say.

The girl is the one the detective on Ceres is looking for. What happened to her will be revealed later.
the short stories that take place before the first novel were interesting enough, some decent world-building in them but i'm sure they're likely not required reading. gotta start up the first book.
on topic, next episode comes out Tue, Jan 05 at 7:00 PM. Still over a week, hnnnnnnnnnggggg.
Thanks for the thread, just watched the first four episodes and can't wait for episode 5. This show really has potential, I like how it hooks you right from the get go, unlike so many shows which require you to watch an entire season before it really grabs you. Or in the case of TNG, two seasons...
This looks to be a good one. Thoroughly enjoyed it so far, Looking forward to Jan 5th to watch the next episode, glad we got 3+4 ahead of time though as those were the episodes that really brought me into enjoying the show
I hope the detective's partner stays around, I feel he has a lot of potential for growth and potentially playing a huge part in any negotiations as he was trying to understand the culture of ceres and assimilate while being from earth
Just finished 1-4, Agree with the consensus, I'm hooked on the series already, I really enjoy this style of gritty sci-fi. I'll probably look into picking up the books once the first season is over.
Finished reading The Expanse Book 1 (Leviathan Wakes) and also read the preceding shorts - chronology wise (Drive, The Churn, The Butcher of Anderson Station) and just watched episode 5. Glad they weaved in much of the Butcher of Anderson Station, pretty faithful to the original so far.

Wasnt that a different girl than the one the Detective on Ceres is looking for?
Miller is looking for Julie Mao to figure out what happened to her. If they are remaining faithful to the book, she should have been in the first episode, likely the opening scene and not having sex with anyone.

The first part of the first episode shows Julie Mao, alone in a spacecraft. That's who SigmaoctanusIV meant. She's the girl that Miller, the Ceres detective is looking for, so Twoflowers was correct.
The "I have to tell you something" girl was a different girl. She is dead now. We don't know what happened to Julie Mao.

Trying to watch anything on Syfy's site is a hopeless endeavor in my experience, at least with a proxy. I tried. I did, however, manage to get the episodes through Google Play. For anyone in EU, this will take a bit of internet-fu, but it feels a little better (and more helpful for Syfy?) than pirating.
I don't understand why they would ever trust some random person telling them to come to him. The only people, as far as they know, who might know where they are, are the guys who just destroyed the Donnager.

They need to dock someplace. They can't stay out in space forever and all the other stations are owned either by Earth or Mars. That is the only place they can dock and be assured they won't be caught by whoever destroyed the Donnager. They also know who he is and that he isn't aligned with either faction.

That line doesn't appear in the books, she just counts down to impact. At this point they think the ship just wants to disable the cants engines to board it. They didn't suspect it was to be nuked. The line was probably added for drama.

Pretty sure they did go through this in the episode... and he's not that random since they knew who he was.
Sort of digging the "gundam" vibe to the universe. Not a fan (book series), but for a syfy sci-fi impressed by the production level. Wish they advertised it better than saying "Game of thrones in space!".
I don't see the problem with going to a Mars base. They have the info file on the ships that attacked the Donnager. And they can testify that Mars wasn't behind the attack on their ship, since they know that now. And what is their plan anyway? Clearly they are going to be wanted. Do they plan to go into hiding? Surrendering to the authorities seems like the best option to me.

I guess there's no guarantee that their testimony has any meaning. Mars could see it as an excuse to not be blown up (Donnager exploded they left in a shuttle) As the guy said 'we look like terrorists' I can sort of get it, although I agree with you partially

You just explained it: it's GoT in space. They seem so busy translating the story of the book to the screen that they aren't taking care to make sure that every episode tells a meaningful thematic story. It's just "here are things that happen, plot twist, here are more things that happen." Are you totally hooked on the plot? Great, you're gonna love every minute. Is the plot not enough? You're gonna find the show pretty empty, then.
Episode 4 was definitely my favorite so far, we saw the gang aboard the Donnager start to turn on each other, meanwhile the UN secretary used and abused her friendship with the ambassador. Got some pretty legit drama out of that.
But then episode 5 rolls around and Holden's like "I'm not evacuating this ship without my friends who I accused of being treasonous OPA assholes, who I don't know anything about, two hours ago." Wait, what? They're thick as thieves all of a sudden? I get that he's the Good Guy and all, but it felt really forced.
On the plus side, the story is intriguing, the world is cool and original, some of the cinematography and sfx is shockingly good, and Thomas Jane is endlessly watchable as Miller (one of my biggest complaints is how little screentime he's had so far). The show seems to have some real atmosphere. Despite the above criticism, I'm definitely tuning in next week.
But if you think this is the best SF series of all time, I'm guessing you haven't seen Battlestar Galactica. Go watch that. Like right now.
edit: almost forgot, how good is Jared Harris as Anderson Dawes?! Holy shit! As someone who knows him primarily from Mad Men and guest stints on dreckier shows, I was blown away by the range he shows here.

Aliens... Like every sci-fi, they bring in aliens...
Really are you a fan of the book series? After getting hyped for this series I read first 2 books in the series. Not a big fan. What did you like about the books?
They don't exactly bring in aliens. It's a bit more complicated than that. What I really like is the politics involved in everything, and I grew to like the characters.
Watched episodes 1-4. Then read the first book. Books are better, but the show has some interesting additions.
But episode 7 is a pretty weak filler episode. Only thing interesting was Avasarala going to talk to Holden's mother, which fleshed out both his and her character a bit. The whole Martian black ops thing was incredibly dumb and took up FAR too much time.
On January 23 2016 08:36 Acrofales wrote: But episode 7 is a pretty weak filler episode. Only thing interesting was Avasarala going to talk to Holden's mother, which fleshed out both his and her character a bit.
I couldn't get past the horrendous non-flow of those scenes.
"I don't know how I can help you." "Explain Holden to me." Scene break "It's too late for that to help you, why are you here?" "I'm here so you can explain Holden to me." Scene break "I don't understand how that helps you so why should I? " "Bitch I'm the vice president of the entire universe, just answer the god damn question."
(^what I wish Avasarala had said. Instead she said something like "he doesn't make sense to me so I need you to explain him to me.")
That and the "clever" dialogue where these no nonsense ladies were playing the game where they know they're playing a game. Didn't do it for me at all.
Still loving Jarred Harris with his pseudo south African accent, and I'm really coming around to the guy who plays Amos in that role. He's really nailing the character.
And yet that was still more sensible, and more entertaining than the whole Martian patrol, open the vault, open the vault, omg open the vault, donkeyballs, phew. That worked. Oh, and now we're also best buddies with this spy we caught and were about to throw out an airlock.
But yeah, Jared Harris is pretty awesome (Miller not so much, but I don't really like book Miller either, so /shrug). I also like all the Rocinante crew except Holden; he hasn't convinced me yet.

What do you think about Cas Anvar (Alex)? There's this weird thing happening with him, for me, where I feel like the actor is actually way more alpha than the character, and every once in a while that comes through and breaks the character for me. Do you know what I mean? Like the character is this almost-not-quite-goof and coward (as far as I can tell, not having read the books), but the actor is actually too masculine for me to actually buy that 100% of the time. He has too much presence.
I don't think the books ever adequately explain why the gunmen were there. The henchmen sorta imply they followed the crew to the hotel, but if it was them, then 1) how did they lay a trap, and 2) how did they know to follow Holden? What I figured at the time was that the henchmen were acting as police and sent to investigate the shootout, then found Julie's body and recognized it for the protomolecule they were supposed to be receiving that went missing. I figured later in the book they'd explain the shootout, but that never happened.
Regarding Alex: I dunno. Maybe because I read the books now, and book-Alex is a bit different. Anyway, the flashbacks at the start of the episode kinda combined to remind me what is wrong with Holden: the tension within the crew seems forced, and this is particularly obvious with Holden, who at times seems like he's ready to shoot Amos, and at other times is ready to trust him with his life, depending on what the plot demands at that moment. It doesn't work too well, and it makes Holden just seem weird.
Yeah noticed that as well , felt like Holden trusted Amos this week with how he talked to him. Was kind of expecting Amos to say smth back at him in that regard.
That aside, awesome episode this week, felt like the pace went up a notch, and a lot of things i wanted to know more about got revealed.
So I stumbled upon this show now, and it was really good, as in 10/10. Had such a thirst for a good scifi space show, and this delivered. This show have the strongest female characters I've seen in a show, and they are all different. Mao, naomi and chrisjen are likeable. Wtf is this sorcery? Chrisjen especially. When she talks, it feels like sex (weird I know).
Detective Jose was the weakest, until the end where it all came together. This show felt very realistic with their characters.

Loved the scene in the bar with Chrisjen the most out of the entire episode. "Here, I'll get get the ball rolling... I'm a smug old bitch who enjoys playing with life and death on her big chess board. A snake in a sari." Pretty amazing.

He said he was in it for revenge. Also he didn't want the guy to get out of what he did by selling his stuff to others.
I like how Miller's morality has deteriorated ever since he got fired from Star Helix. I mean he's racked up over a dozen kills already and he just doesn't give a fuck. Well, not that he has much to lose anyway

I thought the first 5 episodes moved forward at a breakneck speed. I mean the bad guys nuked the Cant, they blew up the Donnager too and then they obtained their own ship to do some adventuring. I felt the pace lagging only at the second half of the season myself.
So far most of it has been pretty good. That scene where Miller is telling his cheese story was weirdly tense. I thought he was going to go for a surprise attack on Amos.
I hope that Mars squad will be gone asap though. What a bunch of whiny, annoying people.

Errr.... BOOKSPOILERS?!! Not sure enough people care? I read the books, so it's all good imho, but this is technically the TV thread. Should probably have the same rule as for the Walking Dead, where comic spoilers go in spoiler tags.
OT: enjoying season 2 so far. Gravity on Eros seemed a bit wonky. Those bombs shouldn't have weighed anything, so Miller acting as if they were hard to lift was weird: if anything, he should be struggling to keep them from floating away due to centripetal force (which they seemed to get sorta right when the kid left him). In general they have gotten weightlessness wrong quite a bit, but it's not something that bothers me too much.
Also in the books the authors are constantly confused by the metric system. E.g. they think that kilograms are a unit of force, not mass or that "two and a half square meters" makes for an impressive office in Fred Johnson's case.

I thought that they did the 2 1/2 square meters was on purpose, to show how expensive living space is in space. That he had such a large office, and it was actually tiny. But you could be right, and it was a gaff.

It was on purpose, but they still must've gotten confused by the metric system, as 2.5 square meters is not nearly enough to fit in four people and a desk, and still have spare room to pace the office. Maybe if they made it bedroom size, say, 6-12 square meters.

2.5 sqm isn't enough space to pace period. So I guess you're right. Whether it's due to the metric system or simply due to inconsistency in their wanting to make it really tiny but also wanting to show Fred's worry with him pacing, I don't know. 6sqm would have been better. 12sqm seems like a legitimately large office
But let's face it, the books are good, but not very well written. It's mostly the colorful characters and great workshop and plot that keeps me reading. The prose is passable... and at times gets in the way of the good story (Julie Mao in the first book, + Show Spoiler +

Yeah this wasn't a book spoiler, its what happened last episode.
I was just confused how it did end up there, as she kept refusing to or cant change course. SO i guess after embracing her and kissing she was able to change it.

Be careful when you call out spoilers like that... I haven't read the books and seems like most people haven't but if someone who hasn't makes a prediction then you can spoil yourself by calling them out
Was that a humanoid protomolecule that attacked? The UN marines were shooting at it and running away from it towards the martian line? The ships looked metallic, though, confusing ending.
Is Chrisjen trying to manipulate Errinwright to turn on Mao?

and regarding avasarala, im pretty sure it was just as much a threat to errinwright as it was to get mao out of the game. I'd at least feel threatened as fuck if i was errinwright, that's for sure

In that case, talk about a useless debate they had on the Roci about 'doing the right thing'. Also, the Roci seems brand new on the inside but didn't it get flooded with bullet holes recently? Seems like that would take a lot of repairs. Whatever, just nitpicking, but noticed it was weird.

Remember how tyco Station builds ships? Leader dude said 1 or 2 epjsodes earlier that they will use their Best man to repair it (before they flew to Eros)
Ignored all posts because I'm halfway through season 2. Just got finished watching 'Home' and I've got to say this might be the best sci-fi TV show I've ever seen. Its at least up there with the best bits of BSG but without all the excessive melodrama that was a bit off putting. I love it.
So Drapper performed like brainwashed due to pills or strange device inside her medal, or even both? Or was it therapy in previous ep? Cause it means Mars want's to hide their knowledge of protomolecule I guess that's how you can add her to Rosi squad with big reasoning

I thought it was just a conscious decision deriving from sense of duty. It might not be them trying to hide the protomolecule though, it could just be they don't wanna admit that they have no idea wtf is going on and thus losing leverage

Positive it was due to Draper's sense of duty. I think the Martians just don't believe Draper about the Seventh Man. Mars wanted her to tell their version of the story to avoid war. Mars won the battle over Ganymede so if they admit fault and make reparations Earth can accept peace without losing face. That makes enough sense to me without needing protomolecule conspiracy in Martian government.
Just watched the first episode of the 3rd season. I was amazed by it.
I really like how they have more divisions among the Rocinante crew compared to the books to have more drama. I also liked all other changes that I noticed regarding the faction conflict. I think the authors of the books are involved with the writing and improve on their original material.
And the visuals and details were absolutely amazing for a TV show. Right now I feel like this was the best SciFi series episode ever. And this although it was just a first episode and did not contain any resolutions or anything.
Holy shit the second episode was good. All that sweet sweet drama The first one was obviously kinda meh, as they had to represnt all the lines, but this one was just science fiction from heaven.
Can't wait to watch the 3rd season, but it's not available in Germany on either Netflix, Amazon or Sky. Apparently I'll have to wait till fall for it to be streamed in Netflix
It’s only available on Amazon here for me... and yea I’m waiting for the third season, I think this is one of the best space shows compared to Firefly.

This is the space drama I've always wanted, I'm shocked why these aren't more common when Battlestar Galactica was huge. I wish this show was more popular. One really cool thing for me, is I love the setting. So many scifi shows always have Earth, and make believe planets somewhere else in the galaxy. There's something really awesome about this show taking place across many planets, asteroids, and moons in our solar system.
It's really good, my wife even enjoys it, the drama that goes on, and the fighting (Which she's not one for fighting movies or tv shows). The whole setting about being out on the belts already, and some how the physics of what may happen living out there (even though it may not be 100%, you can tell they tried).
It's seriously a top show in my books. I hope they continue making seasons
I just hope they still get to cover book 3 which is kind of the climax of the books and really the best book.
I am super happy with the current season so far. Better than the first 2. Things make sense, characters are reasonable and it is just real SF. And I like how they increased some drama in the story compared to the books.
I enjoyed book three a lot. It really had a great conflict where all of the parties had believable motivations. It also did a good job at poking fun at Holden and reminding the reader that Holden's strongest trait that is he listens advice from others. The book series and show do a great job of undercutting the sci-fi trope of the captain being the always decision maker that always make the right choice.
The viewer numbers are apparently not that good. The series probably does not have enough fluff / humour and too much realism for mass appeal. It is a shame really.
But there really needs to be a next season so that they can do book 3. It is really the best part and essential for making sense of the story until now.
This weeks episode was great again btw, again I am tempted to say it was the best one yet.
Ye i agree, it was probably the best of all 3 seasons so far.
And I don't belive crap like arrow/supernatural survives for 8/12 seasons while Expanse might shut down. That's a space drama, not marvel universe, it has to be that "gloomy".
In every internet website related to tv shows you may/will find the highest ratings and reviews by both critics and viewers about Expanse - that actually means something.
People mostly also wondering why the hell would you cancel such of a project.

Wasnt there also some viewer numbers after the live viewers that were absolutely superb? Apparently Netflix said - no to taking expanse already. Which seems absurd to me, especially after netflix mentioned that they want to increase their Sci Fi and fantasy shows&series.
Guess hoping Amazon will take it now? Seems too good of a show to completely vanish and be canceled.
SciFi isn't that popular a genre, and Netflix has altered carbon, and a whole host of superhero series that kinda double dip in their fan base. Amazon seems like a better bet. But I agree that the expanse is too good to disappear. Then again, so was Firefly. Production cost might be quite high. Their CGI is good, and the actors aren't bad either.
Shame. One of the few series that improves some narratives in comparison to the books it's based on.
After reading some reddit and a look at episode titles it seems book 3 will still be covered this season. So that is a relief, although I am a bit worried that it might be done in a too concise manner.

You forgot about Almost Human there. Yet another amazing SciFi show that got cancelled prematurely
So I'm thinking about watching another show, and this one is a prime candidate because I havent been watching much Sci-Fi lately. Which might be because I tend to be very critical of space-based SciFi and most of what I've seen (Start Trek, Firefly, one-off movies like Avatar) just looked horribly cheesy to me. However, the videos of the expanse I've seen on youtube look great, but it seems most of the show takes places in a space-ship environment, except for some politicians yelling at each other in small rooms? Is there no attempt to present different aspects of the universe, or did I just get unlucky with the selection of videos?
Well it is called "The Expanse" which refers to space obviously. :D
So yeah much of it is in space, which means space ships, space stations or asteroids etc. Life in space is exactly what it wants to portray. Life on earth and mars is not shown as much. Also it is limited to our solar system, in case you mean something different when referring to the universe. Since this is a pretty realistic setting there are no warp drives or whatever.
If you dont want cheesiness this should be your thing. Less cheesy than any other SF series by a mile. First season might be a bit slow but whatever just try it out.
It's mostly indoors stuff, given its about space and space colonies. Although I think it does show a lot of the aspects of the universe, like how poor people are treat/live on asteroids, how living in space in low gravity affects their bodies, etc.
It's not like Stargate or Star Trek where you're visting different worlds, cultures and species every episode.

The moment they started turning the ship around in S01E01 I was hooked. You should try it out
Bought the first season. The opening scene with the girl-trapped-in-abandoned-space-station-with-something-being-wrong was so bad I legitimately considered throwing it away instantly, but I decided to stick around. And everything else I've seen so far was really great. Thanks for your advice.
For whatever reason, I assumed that all 3 seasons would be available on DVD already. Now I'm about to finish the first season, and the second isnt out, at least here in germany...

I had no choice to watch it at all locaclly except for downloading via torrents Mostly the episode is avaliable after few hours it was live in a high quality.
It closes the arc of the second book. Some of the plotlines are a bit further along and into book 3, and others are changed significantly (often for the better: the whole Erinwright - Avasarala - Esteban - Mao drama/spygame was far better worked out on TV than in the book).
One thing that was changed is Prax's story (a bit in the details, but so far not in how it affects the outcome). Do we think Strickland injected Mei with the protomolecule, and that will lead to further complications later in the season? Or is it a "happy" ending, as in the books? With them having the protomolecule launch from Venus (as in the books), there doesn't seem to be any need for her to be infected for the overarching plot, but the TV version does thrive more on the character-driven drama than on the abstract developments in the universe... which is more what the books center on, and while the Rocinante crew definitely play pivotal roles, they are far more plot devices than people, whereas the TV series centres far more on them as people.

Yeah i remmeber when how terrible it was waiting for season 2 on Netflix. Most of my friends already watched season 2 and were discussing it while i was still waiting for show being available. Its really dishartening, being punished for not pirating.
Anyone see the most recent episode? It's picking up steam.
Although I hadn't realized this, but I absolutely did not miss listening to that annoying Belter speak, since its been out of the show for a long while now.
This week's episode is where I thought they would start season 4, it is also the beginning of book 3. The way they have done it now they put an exposition episode with many new characters in the middle of the season. There are so many developments packed into this, I think it should be quite hard to follow for people who have not read the books. That said, it was again a lot of fun to watch.
Btw I really like how the Holden crew become celebrities. I think it makes a ton of sense with how they were involved in historic events. That is something that is often ignored in other stories.
Yea, it felt very different. But I like such writing with small scenes like with Epstein drive, Arbogast science vessel and with those mad racer from belt.
Such details and characters helps to build a universe aroun main plot. Interesting, will we ever see Bobby and Doc on board of Rosi again...
So I finished watching the first season and now I have a few question. Just to be safe, I put them in spoilers, but I guess they could be discussed openly? Anyway, I dont want start reading wikis, so I hope someone here is enough into this show to bother answering + Show Spoiler +
What was the point of these italians? Does it have connection to the rest of the show besides presenting martian border control as a threat?
Anyway, that was just a side question: More important is that I struggle to make sense of what was going on with the scopioli and the anubis (I hope theses are the same names in the original version as in the german one):
1. So what starts everything is Juli Mao on board of the scopioli trying to intercept a science vessel (supposedly carrying a secret weapon, turning out to be the blue cyberspores) from Phoebe to ......... where exactly near the edge of the solar system? 2. However, the Scopioli then gets attacked and taken over by the anubis which was...... secretly escorting the science vessel? 3. The anubis then leaves the scopioli to send a distress signal while the science vessel disappears? Why would they do this? Am I completely misunderstanding something here and the science vessel never existed/was just a bait and all of this was made to happen by Julies Dads corporation to start a war? 4. But then how did the blue glow get on board of the anubis where it was later found by Holden and his crew? 5. And where did the crew of the anubis go? Absorbed by blue glow? 6. How did Cutty, I mean, Fred Johnson learn about the location of the anubis?
Ooff, going from memory here, but no, this didn't have anything directly to do with Jules Pierre Mao. Julie Mao was rebelling against her family and was working with the OPA. Seeing as she was on the Anubis, she could tell Fred Johnson where it was in a distress call. The Scopuli was an OPA ship, transporting the protomolecule (not sure how the belters got their hands on that, maybe Julie Mao did have something to do with that) to Eros (where it also, conveniently, ended up). It got attacked by the Anubis (not made clear how the Anubis knew where to find the Scopuli: perhaps they could track the protomolecule somehow?). The crew of the Anubis got infected and died of the protomolecule, so yeah, "absorbed".
Jules Pierre Mao was funding experiments with weaponizing the protomolecule which he would sell.
Been a while since i've watched season 1 but, yeah you do see the young boy some more later on. (unless I'm mistaking him for someone else)
Aren't the italians just that random filler episode where they get stopped by the martian patrol. There turns out to be a spy on board, shit goes all kinds of wrong with a code they cannot find, or a bomb, or something, and everybody is saved in the nick of time, and everything goes on exactly as it was before, but wasting 1 episode? Yeah, that was an utterly pointless filler episode. But honestly, I don't know if those were italians or not. That was the only really really obvious filler episode I remember.
So in the end every single charade Miller was telling to Holden made sense, kinda. Rookie was a pilot of a starhelix jet crashed into the ring (clean up the corners and come slowly, if you come too fast - the room eats you, so ring is a "room"). At this point Miller somehow nested into those small chunk of protomolecule on a ship with permanent death/life cycle? As he said, he's only an "investigator" now and want's a ride. He's a tool and he finds things, but what does it even mean, it's like he became a protomolecule probe to float in open space.

Yea, allright. I'd better blow my mind with thoughts and wait for fresh ep, because it worth waiting
Well, Firefly had definitely less issues with pacing... This is my biggest gripe with The Expanse so far, some episodes seem like just filler and some stuff (mostly politics) is just dragged out too much.
Yea, double episode was great So it's only now the real "Expanse" begins :O I love how "grey" characters are in these series, no obvious evil vs good, everybody got their skeletons hidden, yet - still manages to make a heroic choices when it needs!
Hey, book readers, a small question for you(not that important tho): + Show Spoiler +
I was lucky to start seeing the show when 8 episodes where out, so I didn't feel the 40 minutes horror.
I like how character seems to evolve, first I didn't like bobby, but she turned out ok. The pastor lady I'm mixed about, but I think she seems to seek inwards. That the stuff she does, is for her issues, and she admits it. And she didn't go all "nobody gets hurt!" dialogue that is a plague riding a lot of tv shows.
Really like the wrapping up part where there was no evil loses, good win. That shit is expanding my mind
What I like the most about this series is not the stories but how it is real SciFi. It is by far the most realistic SciFi that TV has ever done. How it portrays space travel and acceleration, zero g or the realization that anything that allows faster than light travel of course also has the power to destroy stars etc.
The plot makes more sense than in most other TV shows as well, especially in that genre. The two main writers of the books and show are fantastic. My only issue was with the acting, a few people were hard to tolerate (Holden, Nagata, a few others as well). I loved Amos though, character and actor. :D
In the series it's great. The books are a bit lacking in the science department, though, but it's fortunately not detracting from the story. :-)
Although the show can be a little inconsistent at times. At the military ship we were told that internal bleeding in null-g is a death sentence. Then we saw Ashford getting his lung punctured and Drummer deciding to potentially sacrifice her life for him even though realistically he would die soon. :-P
I would still place BSG above The Expanse in terms of realism, but only by a small margin. The world of BSG felt more real and deeper, not because of how accurate they got the science (which they did imo) but because the characters were so well done, which is something The Expanse isnt that good at. Still its a great show and Im glad Amazon picked it up.

Amos is boss. Holden looks like he's seriously stoned all the time, which is super annoying.
yeah its unfortunate that their most central character feels like the weakest part of their cast. Bring Dawes back, loved how he was portrayed
Also, with amazon and more catering to the streaming audience instead of tv, i'm guessing theres more of a chance for Avasarala to show off her capacity for verbal violence imgur album of motivational quotes and aphorisms

He was stoned for sure in those alien station :D looked like pure acid trip
Amos is great indeed, not only his character but the actor as a person himself, I've heard a couple of interviews with him (interesting one was with Adam Savage while filming cameo in the end of s2) and he impressed me, very positive dude.

Well it also depends on what kind of science we're talking about. Space battles yes, but FTL and like the cylons? not so much :-P

It just doesn’t carry the same weight if she isn’t a 70 old granny that constantly belittles Holden. We will never get an entire story arch where she sends Holden on a mission because she knows he will fuck it up, only to have him got meta and fuck up her plan by succeeding.

The thing the book and the series got about space combat is that it’s a really stupid idea due to the speed of things in space. It’s like bullets shooting at each other while traveling in opposite directions with faster bullets.
The first book talks about how all it would take to mess earth up is a whole lot of anvils “dropped” on it at sufficient speed. And that the first thing mars and earth did before they went to war was track and stake out every possible asteroid was large enough to be a threat. It is a book series(and show) that is interested in the logistics of war and how distance is a huge factor in how wars are fought.
I was a little bummed they never got into space personal fire arms and how those guns fire tiny rockets, because firing a tradition gun in zero-g is super stupid.

Well the Cylons arent really that hard to imagine imo, sure we are far from achieving that, but its certainly within the realm of possibility considering how fast the AI and machine learning are advancing and the fact that scientists are growing body parts in a 'petri dish'. FTL is a different story, sure its not realistic now, but there are some FTL concepts that are grounded in real science like the warp drive, which go around the speed limit of light by bending space. In fact the Universe expands faster than light because space stretches.
I find the protomolecule and the portals far more outlandish than FTL and Cylons. But then again, we had head Six, head Baltar and Angel Kara in BSG, so yeah ... :D

Havent read the books but that's cool. I think firing a gun in a space suit in zero g without having anything to plant your feet on is .... yeah stupid. But firing bullets from a spacecraft that can counter the reverse force of the bullets with its propulsion isnt such a bad idea.
Anyways, when I said realism, I meant it more about the characters. I think BSG did a way better job at portraying the characters realistically and they were blessed with an incredible cast, an amazing score/soundtracks, great visuals and impressive cinematography. The Expanse on the other hand has some incredible characters and some good actors, but their biggest problem imo is the main actor that plays Holden (and to some extent the Martian guy on the Roci) who is their weakest link. I think if they had a more convincing actor for his role, the show would have been much better received.
I dont have a problem with them either, their performances certainly doesn't affect my enjoyment, but I think they are not as good as the other actors.
I want to know if they threw rocks with protomolecule on it or not. Because it would be fucking insaaaane Amos better fucking survive this season tho, my favourite character by far.
Not a fan of the Marco Inaros casting. Looks way to much like a slimy bad guy, not like a charismatic leader. Then again I already hated the book character because he was too stereotypical.

yea the characters in the books (less so in the show but i think that is down to acting?) are very streamlined and adapted to their role in the plot, they make sense but often lack depth. I think what you describe here as "too stereotypical" is a result of shaving off redundancy and polishing, honestly they might have fit my taste better if they released earlier and rougher versions of their books, longer messier versions.
Still, the show is pretty awesome and the books are a good read too
I have a feeling this season so far will not be well received by the general audience because there is a lot of exposition and several parallel plots which make it harder to follow.
But I am loving it so far. It is just classic SciFi. Lots of details to appreciate in the sets, the CGI shots etc. And some interesting new side characters. Though I just cant take the Admiral buddy of Avasarala serious, I am always thinking of Christobal (Barry).

I think the season is mostly great so far, but I'm also already slightly disappointed that there will be only 10 episodes because I really would like some more "world-building" and introduction to the new characters. And I think it would also be beneficial to maintain the long-term quality of the show overall.
What I wonder about the reaction to the stealth-asteroid threat, and maybe I misunderstood a few things here: 1. Why would these stealth-piercing "watchtowers" be pointed only at mars in the first place? Even if their point is to prevent an attack by mars, is there any reason to assume mars would be unable to launch stealth missiles from ships, satellites, or other bases like the one where Bobby was attacked by that hybrid, so essentially anywhere in the universe? 2. Avasaralas reactions seemed...... inconsistent with the gravity of the situation, at least initially? Like, "yes we should do something about it but only if it does not endanger my own career". What happened to "Earth must come first", or was that always just a convenient slogan to discredit those who opposed her (it's a while since I watched the earlier seasons, so my memory of some details might be off)? She didnt even try to save her family? My impression is that she was primarily concerned about saving what was left of the influence she once had, even if that meant risking the lifes of virtually any inhabitant of earth in the process.

Best parts of the show (Amos, the conflicts independent of magic space juice) continue to be great, things I dislike the most (Everything involving Holden or Naomi, the pilot whose name I can't even remember's attempts at acting) continue to be not to my tastes. Kind of wish Drummer had a real character to play off of here as well.
Will probably stick out the season, given the seeming reduction in focus on the protomolecule receiving new properties as the plot demands and more focus of it as a WMD whose specific properties are mostly unimportant.
Season is still going strong. The only weak thing for me is Naomi's arc. It's a good arc, but done poorly. I appreciate that we can learn more about Marco and Philip through her but all this touchy-feely stuff is just too much and her scenes with Philip drag on forever and are mostly unnecessary (it's not like I'll start caring about him out of the blue).
I really facepalmed hard when I saw Bobbie toss that bullet out. Overall, I think they started to pay less attention to details when it comes to the space scenes. Why on earth would they keep cutlery in a cup on a spaceship? :<

This so much... Naomi's arc literally used as filler... was basically on my phone during that time.
Man, episode 8 left me scratching my head about the writing team.
For one thing, I assume Naomi's scenes are all lifted straight from the books, because they were not designed for television. + Show Spoiler +
Basically it's watching her shuffle around for a while tinkering with objects I don't understand as a casual viewer from 2021, for a brief payoff when she accomplishes something she has to explicitly tell the audience. Do we really need "The Martian: Expanse edition" with tech we don't understand?
the editing of the Naomi-related storylines just feels bizarre. It feels like the end of that Drummer sequence is supposed to have a revelation that she's still alive-but we know that. We even know exactly what she was doing on the ship, since we saw it through to its completion. It seems like at one point they were planning to not tell us Naomi made the jump to the second ship for another episode, and have the Roci and Razorback pursuing her while we as the audience could feasibly think she was dead, but then they chickened out.
Hope her storyline takes up <50% of the next two episodes but I'm not...holding my breath. Ba-dum-tshh.
Saw that folks were talking about this show and decided to give it a shot. Finished the first season yesterday and I gotta say, it's much better than I expected. The acting is very uneven, but the worldbuilding and plotlines punch above their weight.
Naomi's arc is the weakest point of this season, I'd be glad to see more Amos action, or even Avasarala/Martian story. What is the background of current Roci pilot? Those dude who was Fred Johnson's left hand at the station - we know almost nothing about him.
Marco Inaros has become too evil. It doesn't fit with the overall morality of the show. He's slowly lost his ambiguity because they wanted Naomi to seem more abused.

I recently rewatched in anticipation of season 5, the acting either gets better as it goes along or is an acquired taste. I can't decide which.
Naomi's arc, including Marco, would be better if Filip had some screen presence or the character was at all interesting. But I just feel absolutely nothing for him. He's emotional instability incarnate, but somehow that ends up boring. Maybe if they'd found an actual teenager for the role his immaturity would be more tolerable? I dunno. But he's in his mid-twenties...
Part of it is the same issues I have with Drummer's plotline in s5 (and heck, even Holden's-who can care about him hanging out with journalist lady and random pilot guy?). The show has always split people up, but putting one character I like/am familiar with in the midst of tons of new ones just doesn't click as much for me as the close-knit cast of the earlier seasons-at least with Amos he's the real driver of his plot.
Oh well. Hopefully the season finale manages to bring things together again in a meaningful way.
Naomi's arc would be better if it were maybe 1 episode. Now we've been stuck with it for more or less 3 episodes and it's not interesting enough for me, feels just like some filler stuff. In general, some interesting stuff happening this season: rocks, free navy, mars in decline and their underhanded dealings with the Belt, Earth's retaliation for the rocks - all of this is interesting and I would be really glad if the show focused more on those aspects rather than Naomi being stuck on a ship and people slowly flying to save her. At this point I don't even care if she lives or dies, I just want this arc to end...

For me, I just don't like Naomi enough to justify this much time spent on her arc. I have a really hard time appreciating her. I'm always frustrated by decisions she makes lol
At least to the show producers, the evidence was pretty compelling (he even harassed some production PAs, and none of the cast seemed surprised). Honestly I hated his acting anyway, but the awkwardness of them cutting around him + Show Spoiler +
and his death
really showed. There's a couple places you can clearly tell he got edited out with production magic in the last episode.
Yeah that was super jarring. Literally hands in the air "...WHAT."
I suppose I'm glad it happened, because there are more important things in life than an entertaining show, but boy was that ever 'out of nowhere' in the context of the show alone.

I had no idea about this. I liked Alex, although he was the cheesiest, most stereotypical sci-fi pilot haha. I watched a walkaround he expanse set that the actor did not too long ago and the actor actually seemed like a really similar character to Alex. This one took me by surprise, but i guess you never know with people.
The way they ended Alex was cheesy indeed, and the way they edited last episode was strange, sure. I've read about the "problems" with the actor even before the season, so it was not a surprise for the hardcore audience, Cas Anvar wasn't featured in any of the aftershow episodes this season as well.
For some reason I like the new pilot since the very first ep of s5, intro, development and how smoothley they confirmed he'll become the new pilot (scene with the cup of tea was very clear).
Naomi's ark was at least decent when she was captured by Macro, but her solo arc with the ship was waaaaaaaay too long, I'd better see more Avasarala/Amos action, or something from Martian society downfall.
Space battles were great, but I still cannot get used to engine/gun/rocket sounds in space -.-

For me, she could be jumping through portals and connecting with protomolecule species, deriving new mathematics to fight against the weird red shit, and I'd still hate it. Her character always just annoys me.
Yeah, Naomi isn't the most likeable character around...
And I don't mind engine/ordnance sounds in space. I know it's unrealistic but it adds another dimension to the scenes and makes them better in my opinion. Otherwise they'd just be your mute CGI in speehs.

As I understand it, Marco gave a rogue Martian faction the protomolecule in return for ships and help, and they ran Earth's blockade and took control of the ring gate. Then the martians took a system for themselves and mined it off to prevent anyone else getting in, and Inaros took his own system. It may have been a bunch of systems they divided up between them, but I remember thinking it was one each for some reason. Mars want the protomolecule to finish whatever it was doing on Ilos. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Marco Inaros took control of the hub connecting all the rings, giving the Free Navy control over all systems except Sol and the system the Martian defectors took.

That makes more sense actually. It was a little bit hard to tell because it all happened so fast. I thought the martian guy said something about their system and Inaros' system so i extrapolated but what you say makes more sense.
Ah okay. But that still has the cliffhanger from the last scene where the Marsian ship vanished with these strange effects from the super ghost race that Holden mentions. Plottwist: Mysterious super race shuts down the gates. Everyone has their own system. The end

Is it possible the mysterious disappearance of the Martian ship was a consequence of the protomolecule experiment they were conducting, and next season we are going to see Inaros wiped out as protomolecule takes control of the ring gates? That's what I'm thinking anyway. No book spoilers though, only theories
I've read the books, so I know what it is. I'm just surprised they decided on only one more season. I'm not sure they can have a satisfying conclusion without it feeling rushed. :<
Seems viewer numbers, despite beeing quite high, are not where Amazon would like them. But that's Sci-Fi I guess. Niche genre.
For those that don't know the books: (slight spoiler but nothing too important) + Show Spoiler +
Away from business, other factors might've played a part in The Expanse's Amazon cancellation. As per the source material, The Expanse season 7 would've comprised a 30-year time jump, posing a huge narrative hurdle for writers to overcome. In past interviews, The Expanse's producers revealed they were considering ways of handling this timeline leap, but ending with season 6 and avoiding the problem altogether arguably makes more sense. The main cast can't spend entire seasons in old-person makeup or being digitally aged through CGI, but the time jump is vital to the overarching story, and can't be ignored completely without deviating wildly from the books. Wrapping things up with season 6 allows The Expanse to sidestep these potential pitfalls.
Has anyone watched the end of this? I thought it was as good as could be expected for a 6 episode season. + Show Spoiler +
I thought Clarissa's arc was one of my favourites, but its a shame that Holden's was pretty much done by the end of season 4. Also I started to find Naomi more and more irritating as things went on. I didn't like Inaros as a main antagonist. He was too evil and it subtracted from the richer and deeper political themes in the show. The final episode was epic, but maybe a little too epic at the expense of the quieter character moments that i really like about the series as a whole. Clarissa saving the day again felt fucking great though, and every character got their moment by the end.
This is definitely the best tv show I've seen in a long time. Its far more consistent that GoT. Probably 9/10 overall.
Dunno how I feel about it.To me the season felt rushed, but I mostly liked the conclusion.
I'm mostly annoyed that with only 6 episodes, they spend a lot of time on stuff that to me only felt marginally relevant to the overall story, i.e. these laconia scenes. What was their purpose? To have an explanation how Marco got so powerful? That could have been done with a "oh btw when Marco stole the stealth tech from Mars, he also got some railguns". Maybe this resurrection story is such a key storyline in the books and the authors felt like cutting it entirely would be like, I dont know, cutting Daenerys out of GoT? Idk. If it is, it isnt clear to me from just the show at all.
Speaking more generally, imo the presentation of the unverse itself was the main draw more than the characters. In this season (but sometimes others too), it seemed they primarily focus on concluding the storylines of the characters, which is legit but imo didnt play to main strengths of the series.
Then there was this "hey let's give some side characters we havent seen since 10 episodes" a few moments of screentime in which they will deus-ex-machina the solution to some key issue that would otherwise entirely have changed the story. Felt like lazy writing.
Also, did I miss something or did the roci and Marco really just run into each other by pure chance in episode 3 or so? And (I know that is the case in virtually any other show too) having drummer board those containers in multiple teams, but then put all leaders into a single team is just tactically so stupid I wanted to bash my head against the screen. Same when I saw Jon scale the wall with all wildling leaders tied to him with the same rope.
This may sound as if I'm super angry with this season, but I'm not. I mean I'm judging it by the super high standards the first 3 seasons had set. I'm mostly unhappy that it didnt reach those but objectively speaking it was still very, very good.
Imho the finale felt rushed and stuff just happened too damn fast. I also did not really understand how Inaros had a fleet big enough to fight off every other faction in the galaxy at once but didn’t have such a fleet at the beginning of the season… And how a single railgun station seems to mean game over for any fleet (if not for our heroes). In general the last 2 seasons could have done with less Naomi drama and more Belter (and other) politics. Their alliance felt so videofgamy to me, «hey, let’s ally and then fight the final boss together. Having the balls to sideline holden a bit more would imho have been a good move.
This is imho pretty spot on:

The ending is still satisfying but Season 1-3 still are the high points of the series.
Such a pity this had to end... I understand it wouldn't be feasible to continue (maybe with completely new actors?) but still in this last season they hinted at so many cool new things that are brewing up and yet we won't get to see it
For someone who hasn't read the books, on which book does the 6th season end? If I were to pick the books from there instead of the very beginning, would I be terribly confused? (don't really feel like starting from scratch and rehashing stuff)

Season 6 and book 6 Babylon's ashes end at the same point. You can start at book 7 Persepolis Rising, a bunch of details will be different and you ll miss some sidestory background, but it will probably not be too big a problem, especially since they skip a few years between the 2 books.

I envy you for the experience of watching it all over again anew.
I understand that it had to end somewhere, and season 6 is the most logical point to call it a show. It is still very sad that this fantastic show had to come to a premature end.
They probably gave it all they could under pressure to end the show quick. Especially the last episode feels very rushed unfortunately. Just splitting the last episode in 2 and spending a LITTLE bit more time on the threat of the Free Navy in the final would have made it a proper ending.

They probably gave it all they could under pressure to end the show quick. Especially the last episode feels very rushed unfortunately. Just splitting the last episode in 2 and spending a LITTLE bit more time on the threat of the Free Navy in the final would have made it a proper ending.
They can't even have known before the first episode aired that it was being cancelled, because otherwise including the whole Cara + Xan plot makes no sense at all. I honestly thought they included the whole Laconia bit was included so they could jump straight in in season 7, probably reducing the 30-year time jump to only 5 or so (wouldn't really be very believable, and would probably compound problems toward season 9, but seems like the only way to even contemplate continuing).
But otherwise, Cara + Xan are Handwaviums anyway in the main series. This intro to them was from the Strange Dogs novella, and leaving all of Laconia out would have been entirely fine if they knew this was the last season before editing.
Imho season 5 and especially season 6 were very inferior to previous seasons and also the books (although Naomi is whiny and boring there too). Overall still a very good show, and a shame it got cancelled twice.
They absolutely did know that season 6 was the last season. It was publicly announced before season 6 started production. It was even kind of clear before season 4. When Amazon picked up the show they asked the runners "when is the earliest you can finish the story". And Babylons Ashes is the obvious answer. Moreover it seems they were under constrains even for the last season, as it feels kind of rushed with only 6 episodes. At least the final episode should have been split into 2 - one assault on the slow zone, one defense of the slow zone.
Why they spend so much time on Laconia we can only guess. Book fan service? Maybe they just wanted to give us a glimpse of what Laconia can look like on the screen now that we won't get the final arc.
All that said the final arc would have been incredibly challenging and expensive to shoot, and the final final basically impossible to properly bring on the screen. As sad as I am of not seeing more Laconia (magnetars!) on screen, I completely understand that it was unrealistic to shoot the complete Laconia arc.
Tomorrow the most likely last bit of original Expanse content is going to be released: The novella Sins Of Our Fathers. From what we hear it most likely takes place after the final book. One more day, can't wait!
I'm going to start rewatching this I think. Since it finished I feel a little bit empty lol. I don't think we'll see a sci fi show this good for a long time. I was trying to think of all my favourite scenes and there's so many throughout all the seasons. The Julie flashback in episode 9, Bobbie at the ocean, the launching of the Nauvoo, Drummer's speeches, the first time you see the Razorback in action, Ashford and Drummer singing together, Holden and the Roci escorting the Weeping Somnambulist through the Martian blockade. Its all executed so well.
Looking back this show is still a solid 10/10 for me.
