It was your Code S debut match. Your thoughts on moving on to the ro16?
I am so happy. I think my experience at IPL just before GSL helped a lot. Without IPL, I don’t think this result would have been possible.
Let’s talk about IPL for a bit. Are you satisfied with second place?
I am both satisfied and unsatisfied. Since I made the finals, I think I should have won. I regret taking second place. However, taking second place after getting through the open bracket is something I am satisfied about.
You played an amazing number of games. Wasn’t it difficult?
I didn’t count the number of games exactly. I woke up then played and woke up then played. I didn’t feel it in pool play. Starting with the loser’s bracket match against Nestea, I started to feel the fatigue coming on. Still, I think I did pretty well under the conditions.
You won the first match in the finals but lost the second. You had to play two best of 5s.
I was way too tired physically so I was thinking ‘I guess I can play’ but wasn’t too confident. Every match, I drank two cans of Red Bull in an attempt to ward off sleep.
Startale took second place in GSTL. You must have regrets about the situation
Of course, every person on my team must’ve felt so disappointed to even express their feelings. No one would be able to find their calm in a situation like that. However, it’s something that’s in the past so we can only move on. If we meet Prime again, we will win.
Your group today seemed difficult
I thought so too. MMA and Leenock also attended IPL so I played with the thought that we were under the same conditions. Attending IPL gave me a confidence boost. I think that’s the reason for my success today.
You didn’t get to play against Nada. You were once on the same team?
I thought about having to play him but even just practising with me in Starcraft 1 made me happy. I would’ve been very happy to play against him.
In today’s matches, you took down both a GSL champion and a runner-up.
There are still more players to beat. I am confident about my skill but currently it’s not enough. It’s my first priority to try hardest to improve skill-wise.
Which match was the most difficult?
The match against MMA was the most difficult. Losing in Set 1 hit me hard. To be honest, Sets 2 and 3 played out very well for me. Against Leenock, the back and forth on Dual Sight was the only challenging part of the match.
Yesterday, Parting who’s on the same team as you made ro16 first. Was that a stimulus for you?
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t. I was cheering for him but at the same time, it did spur me on.
If you were to evaluate Parting’s PvT?
Even I admit that Parting’s PvT is better than mine. However, I have my own style so don’t count me out. I think I am better in the other match ups.
Your goal?
I want to make round of 4. I give myself about 50%.
Any player or race you want to play against in ro16?
Frankly, I prefer Protosses. However, I don’t want my own race to fall off so I want players that are not Protoss.
Anything to add?
I want to thank Hack who helped most with the practice. I want to say thanks to my coach and all the teammates who worked hard at IPL. I want to thank my sponsors: BenQ, Zowie Gear and Red Bull.
I think it was easier than expected. Oz is a great player as are the other two players in my group so I thought advancing wouldn’t be easy.
You seem to be on a roll in both ro32 and ro16
My games are turning out well. There is of course luck involved. That’s not to say I haven’t grown as a player.
People must think of you now as a possible champion
When I first got into Code S, my goal was to just win ro32 but now that I’m in ro8, I’m getting a bit greedy. The new goal is to win the championship.
Oz is a great PvPer but you took him out easily.
My head hurt during practice (T/N: from frustration). Oz’s must have hurt even more during the games today. He prepared some never before seen things but my standard builds worked too well.
Weren’t you expecting to meet MC in the winner’s match?
I expected a PvP 90%. After I finished setting up, I watched the first match but Maru was really good. I wanted MC to win though.
In your games against Oz, your immortal+forcefield control was a sight to behold
It wasn’t planned. However, looking at Oz’s situation, his observer seemed to be late and he wasn’t able to scout me for a while. I knew he wouldn’t be able to counter so I opted for that build.
Startale Protsses are on fire lately
Well, it’s hard to say (laugh). Both Parting and I are using the momentum of getting into Code S to get this far. The momentum seems to be major factor.
What about Ace? When will he be able to show what he’s made of?
I can’t say for sure (laugh). He’s a great player but luck’s not on his side.
You are taking on Taeja in ro8. Are you confident?
I am confident this time. Our record at the moment is 0:2 in his favour but I’m a very different player now. I have plenty of confidence.
The bracket could match you up against Parting in the finals
Is there about 30% chance of that happening? He and I could both drop at some point. The fans probably don’t want a PvP finals anyway.
Anything to add?
I want to thank the players who helped with practice: Tiger, Ace, Naniwa and Sound. I want to thank our sponsors BenQ, Red Bull, Zowie Gear, Zowie.
I didn’t even think this possible at the start of the season. It’s like I’m dreaming.
You had a 3:0 victory today. Were you confident?
I was a little nervous since I had a 50% win rate in practice. The thought of possible defeat kept me on my toes.
Were you more relaxed after your victory in Set 1?
Yes. My opponent played as I expected him to.
How on earth do you deal with the Squirtle timing.
It’s rare to see Terran not pressure even once. I go for such a timing. It’s better if they just stay in their base.
Your prowess in army engagements was impressive in Set 2.
It’s disadvantageous if the Terran defends at the natural. That’s how the map is built. I knew there was a high chance of breaking through if I caught the Terran in that position.
Set 3 boiled down to an elimination race.
My build was thrown off. I wanted to hide my robotics facility and do an immortal all in but the reaper ruined it. I think Taeja was a bit bewildered too.
You gave away a free colossus. Wasn’t that a Colossal mistake?
It was. It was a lapse in concentration. I was worried about a possible medivac drop at 7 o’clock so I spammed move command leading to the colossus straying away.
Your forcefield play at 7 o’clock was amazing.
If I didn’t hold there, I would have lost. And as we both attacked out mains, if Taeja had taken out all my observers, I also would have lost.
Do you feel like people’s evaluation of you has definitely changed this season?
Always Code A? A player who used to be Code A calibre at best doing so well has elicited a favourable response from the fans. People are jokingly accusing me of taking a performance enhancing drug and asking whether the drug came from Genius (laugh).
What’s the secret to your explosion in skill?
During practice, I honestly felt that I was good enough to be in Code S. However, I lost confidence after losing in broadcasted matches. This season, I regained my confidence in GSTL and with the second place at IPL4. Afterwards, the games are turning out well.
Your ro4 opponent is Hero. Isn’t your PvP formidable?
To be honest, I don’t see it as a walk over. I think such an attitude is offensive to Hero. Still, I don’t think I’ll lose. I’ve always though highly of Hero so this is a great opportunity to take him on.
You are in a position to teamkill Parting possibly.
Since Parting is on fire lately, he will make the finals. IMMVP is good too but Parting’s unstoppable. Parting and I will probably make the finals. If it does come to that, I will win as it’s a PvP. We don’t practice against each other lately but back when we did, I won more than him.
A PvP in ro4 hasn’t happened for a long time. Protoss really is strong lately.
I don’t think Protoss is favoured in PvZ. I also think the better player wins in PvT. Didn’t Hero say so as well? I happen to agree. Also, I think Protoss players in general have gotten better.
Anything to add?
I want to thank the sponsors: BenQ, Zowie Gear and Red Bull. There’s been a cold breakout at the training house so everyone’s having a hard time, so I want to say thanks to : Hack, Sound and especially Bomber who helped until 4 am this morning. I also want to thank Ace, Tiger and Coach Kim for their advice. Thanks to storywriter for the translation here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334560
StarTale_Squirtle, was able to overcome the "2nd place jinx" and advanced into the Ro16.
Squirtle came out 2nd in his group for 2012 Season 3 GSL Code S. In set 1, he was able to overcome ThorZaIN 2:0 and advance into the winners match. Unfortunately there, he was overwhelmed by Keen's double bunker rush and fell to his knees. However, in the final match, he faced ThorZaIN again, grabbed another 2:0 and successfully advanced to the Ro16.
You dodge the "2nd place jinx"
I didn't think such a thing existed, but after searching through the community sites, I found out that such a thing did exist. Even with that jinx in mind, I gained full confidence after I won my first game. But after I lost to Keen's double bunker rush, I lost a lot of that confidence.
It seems bunker rushes are your "Achille's Heel"
To be honest, I STILL have not watched game 7 of last season's finals. It scares me (laughs). I really tried to forget about getting bunkered and cheesed in the past but today's games just made me relive those moments. I could've blocked those rushes but I failed to do so. Last season's final game 7 was a traumatic experience for me.
Do you regret not being able to grab the GSL championship last season?
I only regretted that for about a week after the finals. Afterwards, I just moved on and forgot about it. But today's bunker rushes just brought the horrible memories back. I'm going to work hard from now on to prevent any future bunker rushes.
Are those kind of bunker rushes hard for Protosses to defend against?
It does tend to be difficult. If you haven't scouted it at all, then it is extremely difficult to block it. But for some unfortunate reason, I seem to especially suck at blocking against it. Not to mention the builds I prepared for today were all very greedy economic based builds. That made it so much harder to block the bunker rushes.
After losing in the winners' match, were you able to recover at all mentally?
I think if I had played right after losing that match, I would've been done for. But thankfully, the losers' match went for a pretty long time. During that time, I was able to calm myself down and find my inner peace.
Compared to your other match ups, it seems your PvT win ratio is the worst.
Against Protosses, I have a 100% win ratio. And against Zergs, I have a 72% win ratio. But against Terrans, I'm not even at 50%. I do think PvTs are my weakest match ups. But that fact just spurred me on and I was determined to prove that percentage wrong and that is why I faced Terrans. But in the Ro16, I would prefer it if I could get Protosses and Zergs in my group.
Are you aiming for the championship this season as well?
I want to play with a peaceful mind. The championship is not my immediate goal. But rather, I want to just focus on the games that are right in front of me. Now that I think about it, I only need to win 4 more times. Just 4 more times then I'm set. (what he means is that if he can advance in his Ro16 group with a double 2:0, he'll be in the Ro8 and won't have to worry about falling to Code A)
Honestly, doesn't it feel like this season will be easier for you? Last season's match ups seemed absolutely ridiculous.
Ever since I got 2nd place in the GSL, I've kind of slacked off on practice. (laughs) I don't think winning is the most important factor but rather my performance.
What kind of performance do you want to show for the GSTL?
I remember when I first came out in the GSTL, I got an all kill. For this season, our first opponent is going to be NSH. I want to try to grab an all kill against them. I want to try to grab a 5 man all kill this time.
Any last words?
I want to thank our sponsors Joy Gear, BenQ, and Red Bull. I want to thank Sound and Hack for practicing with me. Also, NSH_Sculp is a personal friend of mine who is my age. I want to tell him to come to the GSTL with a peaceful mind and not worry about who is going to win.
Big thanks to Seeker for the translation of this interview.
This is your third straight season making it to the Ro16.
I'm glad because now I can attend the group nominations. If I get eliminated in the Ro32, it doesn't feel like I participated in Code S and it's also easily forgettable. That's why the group nominations are fun.
You must have seen yourself advancing as first in your group.
I really did. Even the people around me were telling me that I had landed in an easy group. However, I knew that NaNiwa was good at PvP and that Sniper was currently known as one of the top rising Zergs, and Heart hyung has a lot of good results in overseas tournaments so I didn't let my guard down.
After watching today's games, it seems like your early game has gotten stronger.
I still tend to lose focus a little bit. It's not at a stage where I can be satisfied. Honestly, I made mistakes today but they just weren't noticeable. I have a lot of areas to work on.
You blocked Sniper's early game ling/roach rush in game three.
If it was a regular ladder game, I probably would've GG'ed out as soon as I saw those roaches. But it was a tournament so I didn't want to lose. As I microed around, I told myself that I might be able to find a way to block it somehow, and thankfully, that came to be the case.
Did you anticipate cheese rushes against Heart?
I expected him to do those kinds of plays. My build orders were specifically prepared to handle those kinds of rushes. I made some mistakes while microing but I had no trouble blocking his attacks.
If someone tried to do an even more advanced version of Heart's 11/11 that he showed today, would you still be able to block it?
I can block those easily now. But I do get nervous during tournaments so you never know what will happen. I kind of would like it if Terran players tried to do it against me at least once in this tournament.
Your most recent result was the second place finish for WCS Korea.
Before the finals took place, I didn't let my guard down and I put a lot of thought in to my games. The match was the very next day so I prepared extensively. But a lot of people told me that they thought I was going to win it and I myself did not prepare as well as I should have. In the end, my simple thinking ended up becoming my downfall.
As of late, StarTale seems to be getting a lot of second place finishes.
Most recently, our team has made a total of eight second place finishes. In my case, I finished second in three of my tournaments. Since I've made more finals than the other ST players, I will make sure that I am the first one to grab a first place finish.
Will this be possible for this season?
I'm feeling good. My practices are so so, but when I during my tournaments, my games go really well. I think I'm going to feel really good throughout this whole season.
Anything else you would like to say?
I want to thank my teammates for helping me with practice. There were so many Zergs that helped me that I'll just leave it at my teammates. I also want to thank FXO's Sirius. Lastly, I want to thank our sponsors Red Bull, ZOWIE Gear, and BenQ.
This is the fanclub for LG-IM Squirtle. He has been in the GSL for quite some time now and back in January he was streaming a lot between GSL seasons. After diligently watching his stream I quickly became a huge fan of his. His micro and decision making constantly impresses, again and again. This along with the fact that he does not seem to have a matchup in which he is weak in make him an extremely fun player to watch. His build orders are very well thought out and his macro is some of the best around.

Sign me up. For a guy that's been around forever I'm surprise his fan club is so new! I highly recommend his game against oGsCezanne in last season's up-and-downs and against Yu-Gi-Oh in this season's. I heard that he regularly beats Stephano on the ladder, is that true? Cause that's pretty insane.

He did he was the only protoss on the korean GM ladder Stephano coulnt beat. The games was amasing and close but Squirtle was all over the map with hit squads/Warp prisme play basically everything in the protoss arsenal. Was amasing to watch
I actually think Stephano´s lategame strategy where he get a millions spines everywhere was becuase of Squirle amasing PvZ play.

just rewatched the game. Also his game vs Cezzanne was best comeback for pvz
Squirtle made it into Pools at IPL4 through the Open Winners bracket. ^_^
Today he is scheduled to play on stream 2 vs. Polt at 3PM EST (-04:00) and then MC right after that match with the scheduled time being 4PM EST. Going to be some great games so make sure to check it out.
He also has to play BO3s against Puma and Creator but if he plays his best I think he can make it to the Championship Bracket.
Also we should definitely be seeing him in the GSTL Finals tonight assuming someone else on Startale doesn't go crazy and take all the fun for himself.
Squirtle v nestea is the best draw he could have possibly hoped for. The kid is a PvZ prodigy and his vT is questionable at the moment. He's shaping up to hit MKP in the next round though... scary.
I don't know about Squirtle's vT, sometimes, when he "feels like this" he kills Mvp without breaking a sweat. And sometimes he plays like code A player.
But vZ, I would say that he is "THE" player, any day, any time.

I was screaming with my room open so everyone in my dorm hall heard me yell SQURTTLE YOU SON OF A BITCH YOU DID IT.
sign my ass up. Have loved Squirtle's play for a while in GSL and GSTL, this further shows me that he is the next big Protoss player. Squirtle Fighting!
I was rooting for MMA to win IPL, and was a bit disappointed that he lost to Squirtle. But, considering what happened to Startale in the GSTL last night, I hope that Squirtle can win it for Startale nevertheless.
Go Squirtle! Take it to avenge Startale's loss in the GSTL!
I remember watching Squirtle's stream once last year and thinking that is the epitome of protoss play wondering how he hadn't done much in the SC2 scene yet. It's amazing to see him finally dismantling the best koreans in the world :-)
Also the most entertaining protoss to watch imo... he really comes up with some amazing builds
Man, Squirtle is really proving himself at IPL. Taking out so many strong Terrans, looking poised to beat Nestea. We'll see though, I like both Squirtle and Nestea. Squirtle is definitely good enough to take out Nestea 3-0 if he keeps it up, but if he drops his guard, Nestea will make life very hard for him. Either way, I'm sure Squirtle is getting plenty of foreign fans right now
Justice is served :-). Now go win this thing and be the first player to ever come from an insanely stacked open bracket and insanely stacked tournament full of code S caliber players to win.
I am so proud of Squirtle so far. Months of hyping him and he comes all the way out to Vegas to have a killer performance like this, it is amazing.
I do wish that this were the GSL finals of course, but hopefully he will ride this momentum into the GSL on Thursday where he plays in the RO32 of Code S. ^_^
Squirtle so gosu add me. Funny when i was first protoss some months ago squirtle was one of my favourite players (IEM) but then he just kinda dropped off. Glad he is getting more spotlight again, glad to see his return to foreign events :D
My Predictions: ST_Squirtle will compete with oGsMC for the spot of top Protoss. MKP will win a GSL championship. IMmvp will get hand surgery. More Brood War pros will switch over. NaDa will retire. No females will make notable results in big tournaments. GanZi will kill MMA in his sleep to become best SlayerS terran and win Boxer's love.
So far I'm doing pretty well. I now doubt nada will retire, with his online store and new team and whatnot. Also it's SK_MC now. But I'm not counting that as wrong.
I don't like you for sending two of my favourite players to the gutter (MKP/Nestea), but I'll say your run over the last 3 days (with consideration to circumstances) is worthy of celebrated recognition, whether you can close it up now, only one can pray.
Well done squirtle, a second place in this ipl is worth so much more than first place of most foreign tournaments, there are sooo many gsl code s and code a players and squirtle only lost to alive due to winner bracket advantage.
Squirtle & PartinG pretty much increased my fandom of not only themselves, but StarTale itself by an unparalleled amount this weekend, so different playstyles, but both so awesome
Sign me up! Happy for him at IEM 2011, but never saw much of him again. Sooooo impressed with his performance at IPL4- honestly I think he had a tougher route and more impressive results than Alive (no offense to Alive- he was amazing as well).
Hopefully he will play some players that are decent against Protoss in the RO16 so that he can show off even better play. There are many people that still don't know how great his macro play and overall decision making is but he hasn't needed to show long games yet as these players are just too easy for him. =P

Insane PvP. You can FEEL his brain just absorbing scouting info, analysing the situation and executing well-informed decisions. Total boss in P v P

Too bad Oz wasn't able to rise to the occasion >_<
Rematch in the finals could definitely happen though. Oz definitely got the best possible bracket for himself though I still want to see Parting vs. Squirtle in the finals, partly because I predicted it back in the RO32 and partly just because I want Startale to truly show their dominance after getting screwed over in the GSTL Finals.

If Squirtle is as good at PvZ and PvP as Parting is at PvT (Squirtle's record certainly supports this), then I'd put Squirtle above Parting.
It's even arguable Squirtle's PvT is as good or better than Parting's (he's the only toss I would say that about, if it weren't for Squirtle Parting would be almost undisputably best PvT).
I think it's pretty clear Squirtle's PvP and PvZ are both better than Parting's, so I say Squirtle is definitely the best protoss in the world at the moment.
Incredible road by Squirtle since IPL! I can still remember him playing this crazy tie breaker against Socke and SjoW at IEM world championship last year.
You guys realize that Squirtle has achieved rank 1 Korean ELO as a Protoss player? I honestly can't remember the last time a Toss was #1 ELO. ELO obviously doesn't mean everything but it's a cool achievement.

Indeed Squirtle does the most fascinating stuff with Protoss and I also like him much more than MC.
it makes me so happy that Squirtle is finally succeeding and gaining the notoriety he deserves. he had been doing so well in GSTL and IPL TAC, and his performance at IPL4 has really secured him a spot among the top players in the world. not to mention his excellent code S run!

Underrated when he's first in the TLPD and expected by the majority to win both his semifinal and the final of this GSL? I think people recognize his talent.
On May 08 2012 17:14 PeterHuynh wrote: probably one of the most underrated players right now, he might win the whole thing i wouldn't be surprised at all i expect him to rollover hero
Probably not underrated, just under-appreciated. In any case, I hope he wins tonight.
Great 4gate robo hold. Ive been a fan since IPL4, hes a solid player and even though I'm a huge HerO fan I wouldn't mind one bit seeing Squirtle in the finals. Lol at the train. If he beats HerO 3-0 that would be crazy so many shutouts in the round of 8 and on.
Squirtle is no longer the surprise or unknown now. Being in the GSL finals basically puts him on the map of SC2, if IPL didn't do that already. His playstyle and techniques will no doubt be analyzed to death whoever else plays him in the future. The true test is now. Gogo and good luck Squirtle!!
When I put "ST_Squirtle 2012 GSL Champion" into my sig back in January I was thinking the win would come maybe in Season 3 or 4... not 2. This is turning out so unbelievably well so far. ^__^
If he wins game one against MVP, he will have the longest winning streak in GSL history, surpassing Nestea's 14-0 winstreak in July.
I think Parting is better than Squirtle in PvT, but Squirtle matches up better with MVP. Squirtle isn't afraid to cheese, two base timing or go into a long game. It's gonna be harder to beat Squirtle with all-ins.
It saddens me when people perceive Squirtle as this cheesy 2-baser. His lategame PvZ is brilliant, and he was one of the first players to showcase a truly spectacular lategame PvT in his GSTL match against MVP.
Squirtle is going to be the best protoss in the world very soon. He may not have Parting's PvT or MC's PvZ, but we haven't seen a protoss this well-rounded since MC's peak during his second GSL championship run. And he finally conquered his bad nerves. Thank you IPL4!
When I saw this guy's play in the group stages, I knew he was going to the finals.
Flair has had no effect on his ruthlessly efficient play. He is determined to win. I thought MVP might be in trouble, but I think given his recent performance, any weakness on his part was attributable to jet lag.
The final has me moist with anticipation. It would be nice to watch something other than a kerbstomping, which seems to be the way with most of the finals I've watched recently. Can Squirtle's relentless pursuit of undisputed Starcraft champion of the world unsettle the relaxed but adroit play of MVP?
Squirtle really is good with his play, He is a MONSTER! But I think Mvp Will take the Championship bec. he has more experience and he is playing quite how he used to play back then.
Second of all, that was nothing but amazing! To keep his calm and come up with a way to stop the battlecruiser-fleet, sick strategy. Supreme late-game Squirtle just delivered the best entertainment. Ever. The finals are saved.
If a single person is not a fan after watching game 5 of GSL Season 2 2012, you actually have no soul. That was fucking the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
Oh man, I have not been the biggest fan, but now SIGN ME UP ! Squirtle is playing amazing, giving us great finals and most memorable games. Sick, sick play. And thank you MVP for playing so great, you allow Squirtle to shine even more !
I feel so bad for Squirtle.. played so well then a couple of mistakes in the last game decided it. Some of the best games of StarCraft2 I've ever seen. Amazing. Gratz to Squirtle for getting to the final. The champion in my heart ^^
Awesome come back, too bad to loose against bitchy play after insane games. Sign me up ! You didn't win but you have proven you have what it takes to become a champion in the future.
MVP wins with cheese and 1 god damn mule. What a bad way to end a game. Feel bad for Squirtle for losing because of 1 lousy mule. Way to go MVP can't win a macro game after Squirtle took that momentum from you and you have to resort to proxy rax you robbed Squirtle. Keep on fighting Squirtle it didnt have to end like this if MVP had any pride in competition he would have fought you in a proper macro game but he was scared.
On May 19 2012 20:16 Substah wrote: And there all my respect for MVP went away, what a shameful way to win the last game. Squirtle deserved that championship so hard.
Wtf? Mvp took 3 games off from squirtle without cheese also against late game protoss aswell with his wrists. That last game was good, cheese is part of game and mvp knows it, squirtle knows it aswell and he most likely had prepared that something like this might come out on this best of 7. It is shame that squirtle lost but that is just stupid to start hating mvp for using tactics which are part of game. Squirtle did awesome mvp took down naniwa he took down PartinG even though squirtle was not enough to take mvp down he showed great games and we can look forward to see him winning big tournament sooner or later.
squirtle is my favorite player, but wow guys grow up. MVP played better and deserved the series. Squirtle's nerves were too fresh in the first 2 games.
edit: is this really how you want to represent the fanclub?
Squirtle's first finals, MVP's 5th(maybe 6th?) finals. This kid's got a nice career ahead of him! This isn't a loss, it's a second place victory! Sick good!
Yes it does suck to lose to a cheese... But you do realize that was a huge demonstration of skill on both parts... Squirtle almost held it off if he didn't leave his base. Also, MVP played 6 straight up macro games and it split evenly. Cheesing on the last game takes a lot of confidence because 1 minor mistake and your cheese is dead and you lost: then all you have left to think about is "what if I played a straight up game?" That's an extremely haunting feeling, and MVP took that risk.
MVP also has carpal tunnel on both hands. Imagine how much his wrists must hurt after 6 long macro games? I don't blame him: if you were in his position and you don't think you can play your best in a longterm game on an unfavorable map, you'd probably cheese too.
Squirtle played amazing. He really put it all on the line. Don't take away from his gracious loss by insulting MVP.
MVP won all his games from round of 8 and up with cheeses. Hes not a legend, hes a cheeser for sure. In terms of pure skill squirtle has way more skill than mvp will ever have. MVP is a joke and can only win using cheese. Squirtle is the real champ.
I will never buy an LG product ever again because of the stupid fucking cheeser!
That code S performance earned him a fan. Played so well, feel bad about the manner in which he lost. I remember seeing his first GSTL matches where he all killed fou and his great IPL4 run so not just based on that, though that final alone woud have won me over. Sign me up :D

Why is everyone acting like MVP cheesed every game? He played Squirtle in 7 games, 6 of which he 1 rax expanded... and 1 game where he cheesed. The maps were split evenly 3 to 3. Grow up Squirtle fans: do you think he'd be happy hearing his fans call MVP names and claim he doesn't deserve to win? Not in the slightest.

no, he'll be known as an incredibly amazing sc2 player who won 4 gsls.
well played by squirtle. i expect to see him at the finals again soon.

When then Protoss's need to get better and handling cheese then. Squirtle made mistakes in that last game MVP made less so he won.
This "fanclub" disgust me. I'm sure squirtle is just dissapointed on his own game on that last map he did not think mvp has guts to do cheese at last game (if you don't think it takes guts to do cheese at very last game you are just idiot). after he destroyed mvp's first push he just went down to kill the barracks and he KNEW that mvp was not done he had to keep trying this all in tactic or else he is 99,9% likely to lose the game still he didn't leave the barracks when he saw first marines there was possibility for mvp to try to surround him with marines and that is what happened. Squirtle played great even though he should have done something different in last game. Mvp played great it was risky to do cheese on last game but can you blame him? He first won 3 games in a row against squirtle and squirtle was not playing bad Mvp was just playing really good. Next game Squirtle did really good job deflecting drops and securing win with patient play and he knew that hey, i can beat this guy. I just have to play good and keep the momentum. The next 2 games he played really well and patient they could have gone either way. Last game mvp was most likely worn out after 6 macro games he have carpal tunnel on both hands and it is not making it easier for him to play macro games.

He'll be known as the first person to win 4 GSLs and the first person to eclipse $300K in earnings from GSL...
Dude cheesing is part of the game. You know he cheesed Hero in his games too? Guess what: Hero went 2:0 vs him. It's not like cheesing is an "auto-win" strategy like everyone claims... In fact assuming it isn't a build order win (i.e. if Squirtle Nexus first vs the proxy 2 rax) then it comes completely down to micro which is ultimately based on skill... with good positioning and control MVP was able to pick off a few free stalkers and a zealot.
Stop whining... Squirtle 4-gated the first game but thats not cheese? Squirtle had a 400/300 unit hard counter a 20+ BC army because of 1 mistake? A lot of money goes into investing into that type of army, and for it all to die to 1 unit is something that SC1 never had and SC2 shouldn't have.
I was by from far for Squirtle, but you can't say MVP he's a bad player, nor a bonjwa. I don't blame him for using all-in: he's progamer, he does what it is needed to win, al-in are strat like other and he's a great player he has proved it so many times last year and in this season of the GSL how good it is: the three first game against Squirtle were well played and he did an amazing job against Parting . I blame just a bit Blizzard for the MULE, couldn't they add something like the MULE can't mine if there are less than 5 scv mining or something like that? It wouldn't change the game at all except those all-in which are getting really annoying...

But you have to understand thats a part of the game... To nerf Terran again just because of this would be absurd. It was a best of 7 which went down to the 7th game and was even. Squirtle pretty much held the cheese off initially too... if he hadn't tried to go down the ramp to kill the barracks he would have won straight up. I don't think this one game should change anything on balance since it was more a poor decision by Squirtle and bad micro that cost him the game not some imbalance.

I totally agree that Squirtle could have done way better once he holded the first "wave" but by the change I propose, you can still 2 rax just as MVP did but it you can't abuse on the MULE two much.

Squirtle didnt proxy 2 gate like a bitch, a 4 gate may be almost all in but you may still expand off of that and show the fans a great game. MVP proxy 2 rax like a bitch and shows he doesn't care about his fans at all he just wants to win using the cheapest way possible. MVP is not a champ just a pro cheeser. Its all good though I'm sure HOTS will fix these stupid cheese all ins and MVP wont be able to use gimmicks to win much longer. I have no issue about what MVP did, it was well played, really . But I think that the MULE is broken in situation like the very end of the last game : he had no more scv but still an income big enough to make two marines at one time. I have no issue neither with the fact that the MULE helps in the "early stages" of this strat when MVP had still 5-6 worker mining.

It's not really abuse: it's using what you have and making the most of it. Would you call a Protoss deathball composition abusing it? Protoss do it in every single game vs Terran and it's pretty much unstoppable in the late game. Would you call a Mothership vortex abuse? I would with your definition, because you're saying the Mule won him the game essentially. Well the Vortex in game 5 won him the game as well, and vortex on a Zerg army can help win (even a part of the army instead of the whole thing). Zergs have Queens that inject that allow them to have tons of larvae even if they only have 1 "unit producing building"... Is that abuse? See you can't call the mule abuse because then Blizzard would have to change the entire mechanics of SC2.

Sure they could. But then protoss shouldnt be able to research WG until they have 3 nexi. We dont want any agresion, do we?
Also GJ Squirtle. 1 stalker away from becoming a Royal Roader.
This is a fanclub people not a balance battleground.
I hope Squirtle can look back on these finals, see the mistakes he made and simply remind himself to be a little more carefull in the future. On the other hand there were a lot of little things he did right both in the games he won and the ones he lost that should not be overshadowed. There is no victory here but there is a learning experience, I believe he can defeat the runner up curse and come back just as strong next season.

He beat parting and naniwa by being a cheeser. MVP will be know througout history as the guy with the only way to win is to cheese.
I applaud squirtle for being the true champ and defending a cheap cheese like a champ. I will try my hardest to see MVP gets into the recordbooks for most GSL finals won by cheese and overall gayness...
If you didn't know cheese is part of the game. These 2 rax proxys happens all the time in korean ladder. If Squirtle can't win when they appear he is worst protoss i ever seen and don't deserve to be in GSL.
I see people who also cannon rush all the time as well. I assume in your eyes they are GREAT FUCKING PLAYERS because they have so much skill to cannon rush! THEY KNOW THE GAME SO WELL THAT IF THEY WIN BY CANNON RUSHING ALL THE TIME THEY MUST BE REALLY DAMN GOOD.
Actually if i saw cannon rush winning game in GSL especially last game of best of 7 i would be really impressed wouldn't you?
Squirtle went from being outclassed to almost pulling one of the greatest comebacks ever. He really impressed me with the resilience he put up. Hopefully he doesn't vanish like past GSL runner ups.

You guys that are complaining, stop. it's hiding you from the beauty of the game and how good games can be (Game 5 comes to mind ), as well as the skill of each other, Squirtle made mistakes amd he payed dearly for it, Squirtle although that, played amazingly and I hope next season, Squirtle will be able to handle the extremely pressured situations.
It's sort of pity to see that best games of those finals were the ones that Squirtle won. Second place in Code S on his first run? I hope I'm not gonna jinx him, though.
Sign me in immediately! Amazing finals. I was completely shocked after the final game. Such a pity Squirtle didn't won. I thought he already get it and than awful punch that hurts so bad... Squirtle, please take next GSL! You really deserve it!
Incredible player!! All I have to say is that I'm ashamed I wasn't pushing for more recognition of Squirtle and that I never truly recognized his capability! Deserves much more respect, and a WAY bigger fan base!! Sign me up!
Just wanted to say you have got to have nerves of steel....to be down that much and come back is pretty impressive. Your mental conditioning is pretty top notch....you have be able to rally very often IPL 4 was also epic if I remember correctly. Your the new "comeback King" in my book
Squirtle is such a boss, especially since I remember watching him back in January of 2011, and he was struggling quite a bit in PvT. I think with some help from his teammates (PartinG style has really rubbed off on him) He has gotten past that, and is such, one of the top tier Protosses at this point.
Sign me up please, IPL4 was the first SC2 tourney I ever watched and have been a big fan of Squirtle ever since. Seems like a really humble and determined guy, so I love seeing him succeed, plus I'm a big admirer of his playstyle.
Its just like I remember it, Squirtle's stream makes literally every other Protoss look absolutely terrible in comparison. Once you go Squirtle you never stray from turtles.
Squirtle is my favorite Korean Protoss and quite possibly my favorite Protoss of all time. Cannot wait for the day he evolves into Blastoise. Sign me up please.
Does anyone think that there might be a potential Squirtle vs Symbol rivalry in the making? traded 2-2 in GSL, Squirtle beat him in IPL Team League and now they might meet in the finals of their OSL Qualifier groups (1 seed is squirtle and 2 seed is symbol in group B).
That immortal and prism micro was so awesome. I kept preparing to say "awwwww" when one of them would go down, but he just kept snatching them from the jaws of death.
Can I quickly ask, does anyone know what kind of keyboard Squirtle uses? From what I can see in VODs the top right corner has some blue lighting, but that's all.
Taken directly from the PartinG fan club (interview with PartinG): Squirtle came to Shanghai, but he didn't play too well in this WCS Asia Finals, his form recently isn't too good eh.
Squirtle's form is really not too good , but in the internal games for the team, he can win no matter how he plays, but when it comes to actual tournaments there are problems.
Squirtle is in a slump recently. After all, all professional gamers have their slumps, but for Squirtle, that he is unable to play in tournaments at the level that he does in practice is really worrying me.
SO rooting for Squirtle this Code S. He is so good, I'd love to see him get some more results and some of the recognition he deserves - season 2 was just so close, it was terrible to see it snatched away from him by cheese like that.
Squirtle, I will not look down you if you just Sentry Immortal All-in Leenock. You tried macro PvZ before against him but he's a shiester with his GG-lords.

squirtle did try it against leenock, though. check the ohana game ;p
Just a few months ago he seemed so invincible, yet now he falters in "easy" tournaments and didn't even win or play very well today. He isn't even actively tweeting or Facebooking anymore, so maybe we just need to give him some time to get over this slump. Hopefully he'll be back just like DRG.
On a sidenote his PvT seems to be pretty wierd now - he seems to have a new style of staying on Gateway/Immortal and upgrading/Twilight research before adding Colossus, Storm or Archons.
Yay Squirtle wins his Code A match :D Kinda unfortunate that he will have to spend the rest of his days at the ST house listening to Parting brag about his big trophy Also OP might need an update one of these days, big picture of MVP ain't Squirtly enough o_o

idk I really like the picture. Squirtle may have lost but it was a great final and the picture is badass. I may shop around for something else sometime though.
I hope Squirtle's play lately means he's starting to get some focus again. If so it means he's got a good chance at winning IPL5 and banishing his demons.
A good game against Lucky today in the GSTL. Still sucks that you were stuck playing against Leenock on Abyssal City for the final match. I hope the loss doesn't affect you too much as you prepare for IPL5!
Squirtle you such a boss! Great games at GSTL! Leenock played really well with some monstrously abusive play, but with just a pinch of luck the game could have just as easily been yours. WP
He got his revenge on Bogus, beat MMA 2-0, CatZ 2-0, but lost to YoDa 2-1 and Xigua 2-1. Cheers to a relatively successful run Squirtle! Now, time to practice for YongHwa!
Edit: Where can we get Squirtle's IPL VODs, if any?
On December 03 2012 11:01 MiND.GaMeS wrote: I really luv his crazy strategies :-D that man makes every attack very effective, no matter with what he attacks
Squirtle isn't crazy, he exclusivly does clever things.
And yes, I really hope he can make it back to the spotlight. Remember when Squirtle was no 1 on that little ranking list to the right? Let's be that way again, Squirtle! :D
Amazing games vs. Nerchio and Stephano in the GSL WC.
Sucks that he has to beat YongHwa and Life to get back to Code S without going through a stacked Up/Down group... At least he beat INnoVation in the IPL5 bracket... Also this: + Show Spoiler +

The Brotoss Brothers of Startale are broken up . I hope that the only silver lining from this is that Squirtle now uses this opportunity to shine! (Maybe this means Ace makes a comeback too)

Pretty sure Tiger retired, MisS is still around and TREME probably is too.
I think TREME can step up to the plate if he can get over nerves. My heart's with Avenge though.
I don't like this trend. Startale is my favourite team, and with some of my favourite players gone, it's just sad. Here's to hoping that people are satisfied with their salaries and won't leave in the future. GL to Squirtle though, been cheering for you since your amazing gsl season 2 run.
On January 15 2013 02:05 Jmanthedragonguy wrote: I wonder what team is going to pick up Squirtle. My guess is on KT because they failed to acquire PartinG. Any guesses guys?
KT would be cool SKT vs KT, PartinG vs Squirtle :D. Lets see if he even ends up going Kespa team.
Yeah, it'll probably be KT_Squirtle soon. Doesn't sound nearly as awesome as ST_Squirtle.
Oh well though. His Code S group look s pretty managable. Bboong has always had relatively poor ZvP, and Yoda is only a a mid-low tier Code S player, both people Squirtle should beat if he's on top of his game.
Squirtle's proven that he can beat YoDa in IPTL, but lost 2-0 in IPL5, beaten BboongBboong in WCS Korea, and lost to HyuN 5-3 in IPLFC. If he brings his ultimate 2012 GSL S2 water cannon back, he should make it out handily.
Almost time, hope he brings his A game. I am feeling super confident for whatever reason, I'm sure Squirtle practiced hardcore for this and I don't think he is beatable when he practices enough.
Doesnt matter that he didnt smile or seem that impressed, he probably knows hes gonna get a proper stinker in RO16 as everyone in this years GSL is mega good!
He will smile if and when he wins it Hes looking good this season
I had a gut feeling Squirtle would win his code S game. Going by his interview though it kind of sounds like he will be joining a foreign team oO Edit: Ah nevermind, the IM backpack is moderately suspicious..
Yes Squirtle! I was so worried for him since he lost to B4 and I consider Hyun to generally be better than B4, but it looks like B4 was just insanely on point last night and Hyun was really off.

His group is still better than Partings.. I think..
Edit: better for Squirtle, I mean, as in easier.
Yes, Squirtle's group does look more managable than PartinG's, but MC's group is by far the easiest. Both Squirtle and PartinG should be favourites in their groups regardless though (I hope)

I'm really looking forward to this Ro16 as a way to learn new and crazy PvZ allins.
I don't think he signs up for too much actually and that loss is likely a walkover. I'm pretty sure Squirtle is just committed to Korea for the time being.
Just realized I didn't join this fanclub yet I've been a long time Squirtle fan too :/ sign me up and gogo squirtle! I believe you can definitely run deep in this last WoL GSL season! Good luck tonight! Squirtle HWAITING!
I want to sit in a corner and cry. Cry my heart out. He had that game on Cloud Kingdom vs Soulkey. If he had gotten off one more shot from that vortex. Soulkey's economy was dying. But since he has his ridiculous 1a army already, no chance. I think losing that broke his mindset for the final match, along with last year's loss to Symbol in the EXACT same way and group setup.
I'm so sad. I'm even more sad than the last time he went out to Symbol in the same way (that time was better; it had manner nexii in game 1 at least). He played ridiculously good and got tired and nervy. Like how he nailed zealot warpins to wall off all the time at first but misses it in the last series.
I hope he finds a new team, invents some killer HotS-builds in his now very generous spare time and completely wrecks the first HotS GSLs. Or invents a time machine, stays in his base and builds some sentries and wins S2 2012.
I was so sad to see Squirtle drop out, he is not my favourite player but I wanted him to win GSL more than anyone else, he deserved it. The guy is amazing. Though I suppose MC and Parting carrying the Toss torch is ok too.

If you can, there's a lot of old and really handsome pictures out there that should be added imo.. if you really want to make it flashy, you can implement some "sort by year" feature or something along those lines.

^^ I wouldn't say that so quickly, Symbol's a real talented guy, making the finals, Shine showed talent in the Up/Downs and KeeN did the same in the Wild Cards. Hopefully Squirtle's brushed up on his vs. Cheese defense

Nice! Shame you won't be able to see the games though . Go Squirtle kick ass tommorow in code S! =D
I've been a fan of Squirtle ever since he made his debut in the GSTL. I was really sad to see him lose today. I thought he was going to 4-0 his group, or atleast make it through easily.
Sidenote: I'm not a member of the fanclub yet (This is my first post ever on TL lol). Could you add me?
Alright, up against 8th Team's ALBM (check). I know you can do this Squirtle! Will face winner of Ruin and Sparta should he (and I know he can) advance
8th ALBM shouldn'd be too hard, I hope! Sad if he has to teamkill Ruin afterwards though...
Also, I just saw him (squirtle?) beat Byun on stream. I was glad. He handled cloaked banshee + hellion drop + followup bio/scv pull with ease and it was a tad impressive.

This week in Millenium House: 900e 3rd Numericable Millenium House Cup 50e for a showmatch vs Hyun on MilleniumTV 2000e 1st at GIGABYTE Proleague organized by Millenium = 2950e I bet he is enjoying France haha Good luck for Dreamhack !
I really hope Squirtle does awesome in his osl group and we have Parting and Squirtle advancing, but Yonghwa PvP has been always a threat, and is Bo1, the matchup made for upsets
Knew he would cruise through group stage 3 after a close call in group stage 2. Bracket is setup for the Squirtle vs Life finals that some were hoping for, Squirtle could come across old nemesis Taeja and also possibly Jaedong on his way there.
Once he scouted the Dark Shrine, he immediately moved his army to block the ramp, sent a few Stalkers to kill the Proxy Pylon, and when the Dark Templar appeared, an immediate Force Field + Reveal = most useless Dark Templar ever.
Next, his Immortal/Void Ray army went into Super's natural and killed off the Nexus!
Then, he fended off constant Blink Stalker harass, managed to secure a 3rd, and rolled in with the larger Immortal/Void Ray army for the win.
Very well done ! In order, these are the opponents he knocked out one by one : - MaNa - Dream - Apocalypse - Bly - Patience - Scarlett - Check - Jaedong - ForGG - San
I was so surprised to see the Squirtle Fan club in the latest updated fan club. The last post was almost 2 years ago. Does anyone know if he is just streaming for the fun or he has some plans?
I'm not aware of the latest news but what will start in 3 years?

I think that's just poor English. It's probably meant to mean something more like 'It's been 3 years'.
Hey guys, just to confirm he will be taking place in the Shoutcraft Kings event, big thanks to Totalbiscuit for the invite and we are currently looking to get him back into a team, he is keen, active and expect more streams!
