It's free to play, but not really. Basically the F2P is more or less a demo, you have to spend money or you are not competative. But i think if you buy a civilisation once then you get all for that civ, so it's not that exploitative either. Basically it is a full price game acting as if it were f2p. Check it out to find out if you like it. I didn't, but i was never really into AoE.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The time periods that interest me most are the Roman era and the Napoleonic wars. However, from what i gather a lot of people don't seem to like Empire TW. Is it purely due to the gunpowder combat style?
I'd go for Rome then but it's also the oldest in the series (not including the first two games) so it has less appeal for me both graphically and considering the amount of money i can save (shogun 2 is almost a steal at $7.50).
btw are there any expansions that are must haves?

From everything I've seen it's terrible. If you're a fan of the original series you'll hate it. If you're new to the series and are more casual/mmo grind fest/single player oriented then you might like it.

At the top of the hour the community voted game will be on sale, with a new vote starting.

0.0 so many good games on sale!!!!

Empire TW was fine. It got a lot of hate because for the first year or so there were ridiculously bad bugs (CTDs and the AI didn't know how to utilize naval invasions so if you picked England it was like a free win campaign). Napoleon TW was fun but despite being marketed as a new game, it's just an expansion pack to ETW. (It is stand alone however, but very similar to ETW)
Rome being the third oldest of the series may sound bad but Brood War is still one of the greatest RTS games ever made and all this time hasn't changed it. RTW is a fantastic game.
Shogun 2 for $7.50 is a good deal. It's enjoyable although imo not as great as RTW and M2TW.
Basically, all the true expansions for TW games are must have. Barbarian Invasion for RTW, Kingdoms for M2TW; absolutely needed. Where it gets murky is the DLC. A lot of them are just stupid reskins on old units with tweaked stats-not worth more than $0.25
The collection of Shogun 2 TW games for only 20$ is a really good deal. Fall of the Samauri is good fun, RotS is kinda crap but eh I guess worth $2.50 and S2TW is definitely worth $7.50

Wish arkham city was the poll winner but meh. None of the main sales appeal to me right now, so it's a wash so far for me.

I have most of these games, gonna have to wait for tomorrow :B

The most interesting deal today is hidden! The 75% off Heroes of Might & Magic is for the whole franchise, meaning you can get HoMM5: Tribes of the East and Dark Messiah for 2.49€ each These games need some love, especially Dark Messiah which is so underrated

If you get Rome, get Barbarian Invasion but don't bother with Alexander. Not too up to date for the others.
Napoleon/Empire play a bit differently, partially the gunpowder/naval combat. Especially Empire felt overly complicated to me, whereas Rome was fun to manage campaign wise. I would get either Medieval 2, Shogun 2 or Rome if I were you.

Give me that Trine 2 yes please.

lol everyone already has it. Man how have you not played that yet, you should get on it! Such an awesome game.
Edit: Also everyone should get Divine Divinity. A really awesome oldschool Diabloesque style game with a genuinely interesting art style. Can't pass it up for 4 bucks trust me.

I find it funny that, despite all these insane deals, 20% off is enough for ARMA to maintain its top spot.

It's a favor of the month game that will be 'out' within 3 weeks, now they capitalize on the trend. Arma 2 combined operations was 15$ on amazon, now it's back up to 30$.
