I remember when the last ladder reset occured d2items.com had like 26 ber after something like 13 hours in. They also had a ton of other goldy stuff.
It's just plain impossible to do it legitly (bots are somewhat "legit").
I woudlnt be suprised if the owners of theses sites have contacts with the d2 department at blizzard and pay them off or something.
You can get a ton of bots to run the hellforge quest in Hell Mode... within 13 hours.... ( get the initial 10+ bots in and then use these to mass rush the other chars easily...has a pretty good chance of getting Um+ turn the rest of the bots into baal bots afterwards... if they got some hammerdins in the mix...
I really hope they don't let d3 go to hell. It's impossible to trust any of that stuff, you'd think they would have tightened everything up after what happened with diablo 1. Now there's even more incentive for people to bot/dupe/hack to get "legit" items to sell to people that want to be "legit". Very ironic.

I still played legit as a kid on d2 LoD, i remember playing diablo, and i would get my hands on the apococlypes staff and rape in the high content with it lol, then when d2LoD, it was four times as better and probly the best game to date, (besides sc)

How'd it ever get ruined anyways? The bots don't affect your gameplay, but the hacks that created glitches may have done so ( the ones where they can cast faster than 4 frames or something ? )? There were also maphacks I suppose and the ability to target someone far beyond your screen distance, but that was kinda it... and perhaps that glitch for the amazon to jab someone at a screen distance...tppk on hc... force lag on target player/freeze them ... the bots harmed anyone unlike the hacks though
I saw some unsuspecting kid get owned by a baal bot one time... he decided to hostile the bot and the bot tp'd over him and smote him with the merc+ ( act 2 offensive / conc aura )
Bots harmed people because they allowed others to build up large inventories of uber items unfairly as opposed to people who would grind through meph and pindle runs and endless cow runs to build up items legitimately.

Bots made d2 playable since they regulated the currency, whatever they were duping became the hot item, sojs and rares then eventually HRs. Without those items the common noob would never be able to trade his shitty items for a few sojs and then trade those sojs for the items he needed.
Sure wealth became in abundance to certain people, but some of those people played legit, believe it or not. With good trading patience and a few nice friends dropping items your way you'd be surprised with what can be done :D.
Got a 4os eth 268% Rune Master just entering the portal of a Baal run :D.
I'm not sure imports are still possible for d2 atm (haven't seen a Killersdream in a while lol), if they are its a pretty well-kept secret. I figure most of the websites indeed run mass bots; there's a lot of highly effective bots for d2 that are available to the public but they probably have streamlined & more efficient ones (e.g. on virtual machines, like Pepperoni said).
There are private hacks that shops can dupe/import items with, maybe Blizz just made a check wether the item can exist in D2 or not, so that the white runewords, ith runes and stuff cannot exist, but the "normal" items such as the HR's and the uniques can be imported somehow. VERY private ofc, cause its there livelyhood.
Ilevel 50+ = plain skillers (plain mosters NM Great Marsh onwards) ilevel 61+ = skillers with 31-35 life (plain monsters most of Act 5 NM onwards) ilevel 77+ = skiller with 36-40 life (plain monsters Hell Lost City onwards; Pindle) ilevel 91+ = skiller with 41-45 life (Baal ilevel 99, Nithy ilevel 95 and Diablo ilevel 94) ( need some perfect gems to reroll to get good modifiers ), but doing baal runs for the GCs are pretty good, even if you need to use some gems to do it ( if want to isolate some of the properties, you don't need go to to baal... it would make it easier to get the 31-35 life + skill with less rolls to make it ) +skill/45lifer ones if you got tons of gems to spare
you can get sojs anywhere with ilvl 50+ ( NM Diablo/Baal/Andariel Meph can't drop all items in the game, but Baal could
HRs aren't impossible to find... and I've found several on my own, but the others came from people I knew except they used bots and finding the HRs after thousands of runs and multiple instances of it...along with multiple accounts of unidentified items...(usually rings and such) could just be you didn't know where to look for them... ( the countess drops runes quite often and you can go there to get keys at the same time ) If you're playing ladder, you can cube some runes... 2 Guls can make a Vex if needed
For those interested in a legit community, check out the Amazon Basin, for a great community that plays singleplayer and uses a 3rd party muling and storage program, check the SPF ^^
The good old days of actually exploiting packets to get the game to do retarded shit like imbue an SOJ to get it to dupe itself, or managing to get ITHs / whites / occy rings into the game

Bots ruin economies. A ruined economy in a game that involves massive trading like diablo is not a good thing.
