(As a TL'er I love high skill-cap competitive games etc etc.)

(As a TL'er I love high skill-cap competitive games etc etc.) Why not just dive in. I mean do you want to play competitivly and just 1v1 or do you want a party game (like you stated both things). Smash is both. Just go in play singleplayer and FFA for fun and if you really want to dive in start watching streams and tutorials to grasp the competitive basics of the game. And why not start now when there is a ton of new players and content being released by the minute! EDIT: If you play FFA with friends it doesnt matter which characters can do what etc. but you can certainly learn more moves and everything. Past game references I don´t really know what you mean, but basically every characters moveset is 90% what it has been in every other smash game but frame data and such changed so characters are worse/better than before and then there are the new additions to the cast. But as I said so many new people right now that feel as lost as you. I´m basically playing Falcon and Falco right now, my Melee mains and just start to learn what all the characters from Brawl and later can do since I only played melee before. But it´s fun and I don´t care. In some months we all gonna have it down I assume, there´s gonna be a certain amount of characters used by the Top 8 of tournies and sometimes we gonna see upsets with crazy low tier characters and strats, but right now I guess everything is possible.

It's gorgeous, competitive, fun, and you have so many options for characters, stages, and music that you're guaranteed to enjoy it! The game has only been out for a few days, but it seems to have a reasonably high skill ceiling. Based on my experiences with Smash Bros and following competitive scenes, I rank the skill ceilings of the previous four Smash games as Melee > 64 > Smash 4 > Brawl; I'm finding Ultimate to be comfortably between 64 and Smash 4. I'm very satisfied with that.

I was actually shocked at how simplified the controls are and how little fun ive had playing it. If it weren't for my kids, I'd return it. Not my style at all. Too much jumping around and too many items raining down. I heard so much hype, and it's just..... yuck.

Welp I guess you need to look at some higher level gameplay with items turned off before you make that conclusion. It´s a great game for the kids to just SMASH around but there is depth if you are looking for it. Not as many mechanics as in Melee obviously but it´s not like you can play it once with your kids and write it off as a low skill game. There is a really big difference between what you have probably seen and played and people playing for real at tournaments believe me.

Then its pure skill between players

Then its pure skill between players I'm sure you're right, I just don't like the core aspects of the game. The minimal attack buttons, jumping-centric nonsense, and all the god damn platforms and shit everywhere just make it not fun for me. I'm just a weird dude. I also stopped playing Breath of the Wild after 10 or so hours because scavenging for weapons is a fucking retarded mechanic. Some people are just never happy. I reckon I am one Back to Red Dead 2 for me!
