What is this and how do I play it. Tried a game and was super confused

It’s a good map. The poor translation makes it even more enjoyable.

There’s a lot of good guides out there for getting started on YouTube and reddit, so I won’t go in depth on it, but it’s got more in common with set collection board games than chess. The unique thing about it is the shared pool of pieces that you draft, and changing your decisions based on the draft pool.

There are some drafts that will breeze through early game (goblin mech) which you’ll probably run in to sooner or later since it’s very popular.

It is basically those old games where you pick units and they spawn every X seconds. Only with upgrades and a slightly more advanced economics system. The interest rate when stacking up money up to 50 gold for 5 gold a turn seems game winning in most cases.

Pretty fun, reminds me of a TCG for some reason. Game probably has more depth than meets the eye.

Fun game but lot of RNG involved. Can be very frustrating.

Actually the more I play this game the more I think this game's legit. I don't know how to explain it, it's a weird cross between poker, a tcg and a td with some fucked up item rng tossed into it.

Sure the ui is janky and it's poorly translated but you don't need to like moba's and it isn't anything like chess to like this game. people should try it.

i'd say it's really like Mahjong, particularly with the shared pool that you draw heroes from.

either way, it's a really cool concept that seems simple at first but has a crazy amount of depth... I could definitely see this being the next big thing for mobile games especially, as soon as Tencent copy it.

this is an improved version of pokemon defence of wc3, but imbued with massive amount of rng.
unexpectedly, this rng makes the game very addictive in the same way like people love gambling.

Really addicting game that has hidden depth to it.

There is a certain RNG element but it's actually smaller than people think. Mostly relates to item drops but these are every 5 levels and the team composition seems more important.

As to what pieces you get to pick each time you can look at what your opponents are choosing as these options will appear less often and you can play around it. e.g. if you see 5 people first pick clockwerk/tinker you can assume mech is closed and go down a different path.

I'm still learning it managed to win one game and i've had a bunch of top 3 finishes, late game my economy is often a lot worse than the other guys left in it so they can search for top tier pieces more frequently, again this isn't RNG. They get to see more pieces more often because they managed the money better.

The other refreshing thing about the game is a lot of compositions can work and there is a nice tension between early game compositions and late game compositions. Classic example is mech which is really good early but doesn't scale well into late game.

There is no real similarity to chess. It's more akin to Limited formats in MTG and kind of TD games. Definitely worth a play.

Yeah I've still been hooked on autochess. The game is really good and i'm surprised people aren't talking about it considering it's taking a lot of twitch streamers over.

Valve probably has a love-hate relationship with autochess given how big of a hit it is that people are installing Dota just to play it and how much of a bust Artifact has been for them in comparison. The mod is doing a million times of a better job at establishing Dota 2's brand than Artifact is so it would be foolish on Valve's part not to support the team that made this on some capacity. This game is probably the latest mod to make it big since actual DotA.

It's just so well made. The way people are buying couriers just to change their appearance in a mod and them being on ball with quick updates.

Just started this game a couple days ago and so far gotten to Bishop-1. I would totally purchase a standalone game of this. We need matchmaking!

I have a love-hate relationship with this game. Going for the eco strat and being in last place with everyone alive, then winning from behind because your eco is finally on full steam, is one of the best feelings.

But at the same time there is so much frustrating RNG. Not just items, but also heroes. Even if you're the only one going Hunters, if that 3rd Medusa never shows up for you that's GG. Positioning during the actual fight is so random too. You can put your KOTL in a corner but as soon as the fight starts all your units hop forward in some random fashion and your KOTL might die before getting his spell off anyway.

Rook-1 now, despite the RNG I feel like I can get consistently top 3 to preserve ranking. First place requires luck though, a bit too much luck.

It also keeps the player number high but lowers the stream viewers, so probably love/hate there too.

I got hooked on this 2-3 days ago when I saw Bulldonger and Gorgc play this instead of ranked lol.
I'm still very much trying to catch onto the finer points of the game but I can be consistently top3 in pubs. Apparently, this game has an in-house following now, with streamers and hearthstone players hosting private lobbies to get games with other players of similar skill levels or just to chill in a friendly environment.
In Pubs I calibrated as Knight-7 which is not that bad I think?

Early game (for courier levels 1-6) I think mech is pretty much OP broken with a warrior strat being in a close second. Druids are a good investment too but won't win you games. Trolls and Orcs are amazing. Mage strat is pretty legit too.
Mid game you could put 2 undead in (drow and abbadon) for the minus armor if you got room to spare, but don't invest heavily into them meaning don't expect to, or get them to level 3s. Late game its ALL about kunkka, tide and disruptor and if they fit your comp to a lesser extent troll warlord, lone druid, lich and if you're lucky to get them, enigmas.
I am personally not too fond of assassins, hunters and knights, although I can acknowledge some people make very good use of them.

This game is all about transitioning from early to mid and mid to late correctly. It doesn't really matter if you're on a win or lose streak, but banking money mid game is a must. Obviously you ideally want a win streak since you don't lose HP every turn but try to stay above 50$ for interest rate. Then make a final push into levels 9/10 and get all the goddamn AoE you can.
You really shouldn't reroll your chess pieces until late game (7-8+ courier level) and just take the losses and the HP hits. Better to hit a spike later than try to smooth out the curve with band-aid solutions.
Losing is acceptable as long as you don't take huge HP hits. Don't lose like 8hp every round or god forbid 10+, try to only lose by 1-2 maybe 3 units at most.

This game can be deceptively hard because ALL the players share the same pool of available heroes and their numbers. There are like 20 juggernauts in the pool, 20 axes, 20 disruptors etc. With druids beings the exception of a shared pool of 10 of each of them. So be mindful of what other players are building and either race them for those good units or build something else.
Now I am not sure if when a player is defeated do his units go back into the pool of available units or not, but from experience I think they do not.

Worst part of this game is the item RNG. There are no guaranteed drops from NPC rounds, and if a dude gets a daedalus throughout the game and all you get are robes of the magi, you'll have an unfairly uphill battle ahead of you.

Mech is a good early strat that falls off pretty hard, you can use it to keep a win streak going whilst you transition to something else

Orc is probably the best synergy followed by troll/warrior. This might be because disruptor is so sick but a good shell to work with is Axe,Jugg,Beastmaster,Disruptor then you can add in what works

Naga can save your butt against a mage strat.

I think mage can be really strong but you can't go into the game trying to draft it, you need to get early razor and then add the other pieces and razor is one of the most contested pieces.

I quite like spending gold to level at rounds 4 and 9 as gives you a nice power spike.

I had good success with going mech into mech for late game. Basically just winning early. Dropping in some random DPS stuff and all mechs that drop while getting full eco, then teching up for techies and gyro drops. Taking losses in late mid game then hitting level 9-10 and getting the drops into a win. Would lose to mage late game, maybe assassin. Not much else.

kind of hard to justify a strategy that has to get two legendaries to be viable

Even if you don't get them you still have a good mech front line and can go liches, tides etc that does drop to deny others their late game. Since you should hit it faster by skipping a large part of mid game. Especially in pubs where people don't go hard eco.
