Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action. |

You can type a username into the search options (if you click on the search button to the right of the search box) and select title and content that should do it I think. You have me interested now.

Wait until I find that post. You'll change your mind.
Can anyone help? It was something about the universe and/or the concept of being/nothingness - Iif I remember correctly, I didn't create the thread but was one of the first replies, saying that I studied philosophy and those concepts were relevant to my field. The following posts were insults by triggered people that were mad I said philosophy had a saying in it. Probably my most pathetic moment in this forum.

I agree that the US are rotting, but I would put Trump as the effect, not the cause. At least this way, as that old article of Zizek suggested, maybe the table will be so flipped that next time some serious change will happen.

I'm sure that the predictions of thermonuclear war in 6 months were just jokes. Trump's recent remarks about North Korea on the other hand...

I was there. and that's not what people thought. there was a doom and gloom sentiment; because we knew it would be bad for america (and it was and is), but we also knew that there was a limit to the amount of actual damage that would be caused (barring extreme scenarios which we knew were very unlikely, but more likely than they would've been in the past or under saner leadership). "still running" can be a very low standard; depending on what quality of running you're talking about. reaching venezuela levels of collapse takes awhile.
if you want to cite something, please od so; otherwise it's your vague recollection vs my vague recollection; and I see little reason to choose yours over mine.

It’s a slow rot over here, but we are well on the path. I agree that the US are rotting, but I would put Trump as the effect, not the cause. We had problems, Trump made a new set of problems for us on top of the old ones. Nothing has been fixed and we are gearing up for bigger changes. Abortion being outlawed in large sections of the country, fewer workers rights, an implosion of our healthcare system. Straight up, this administration is likely to end up fucking me, my wife and my sister over with large increases in healthcare costs and an inability to move out of the state to avoid being denied healthcare. I didn’t have these problems under Obama.
So no, Trump administration has actively made things worse. He isn’t here to fix problems.
Edit: Also to be clear, a new president won't be able to undo the problems I listed created by Trump.
|
I didn't mean that Trump was going to fix the problems - I was simply saying that in my opinion certain 'ways of life' of the US are bound to fail and create problems anyway (and I'm talkin about everything, important and futile things): health insurance is a stupid, stupid concept, mandatory tipping is ridicolous, even the idea of free-refills at fast foods is unhealthy. But maybe Trump is dynamite, destroys the system and one day someone else will be able to use that as a stepping stone to change. Just that.
|
Yeah abortion will be terminally outlawed along with unions and our healthcare system will never recover from simple changes that the next president couldn't just do on day one with a pen and paper mostly.
America is an odd place where one president can make these changes forever if he says so.

But maybe Trump is dynamite, destroys the system and one day someone else will be able to use that as a stepping stone to change. Just that. Although I agree with all those things, that doesn’t make the impending problems that I may or may not face any more palpable. Another impact of Trump is that one of our friends doesn’t leave the house without his wife. He is married to a friend of ours, but is from Bangladesh and has a green card. He has been stop cops more frequently and is terrified of being detained and shipped out of state.
Now to avoid being off topic, the main problem in the US right now on top of Trump is talking to people about these policies that are a result of Trump. My brother voted for Trump, but mostly has refused to engage with the real fall out of that vote. He doesn’t want to hear people badmouthing the administration however, which is a hard needle to thread when it is actively trying to fuck over members of his family.
Which comes to the root of the problems in this forum. Some folks want hold opinions on immigrants, healthcare, government, abortion or whatever else, but do not want to discuss the consequences of those opinions if they become reality. People want to deport all illegal immigrants, but do not want to engage with the idea of what that would entail. And when they are engaged on that topic, they feel attacked. But they can’t have it both ways. Because voting for some outcome in politics is voting to have the power over the government used to make that outcome a reality, even for the people who don’t agree with it.

America is an odd place where one president can make these changes forever if he says so. Not for nothing, but you know how the Supreme Court works and the conservative plan for the court. Abortion and pre-existing conditions are on the chopping block. Maybe we will get lucky, but I’m not counting on it.

Yes and the next president has no power over said court and won't be able to change it.

flipping the table/destroying the system to cause change tends to be a poor plan; especially if you don't have a replacement plan ready. and serious change isn't always for the better; and quite likely won' tbe if it's not well thought out.

The doom and gloom preaching gets old after a while. People can look at the ages of the justices and tell when they are likely to retire. The court is going to be this conservative for the next 10-20 years. That is a lot of cases.
