Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level play by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities throughout its history, such as Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Millions of dollars have been donated to great charities, thanks to the GDQ speedrunning marathons, and many prizes have been awarded to those who donate!
Awesome Games Done Quick is the annual GDQ marathon performed in the winter, while Summer Games Done Quick is the annual GDQ marathon performed in the summer. This year, AGDQ is from Sunday, Jan. 6th to Sunday, Jan. 13th. Here is the schedule of all the AGDQ'19 games that will have speedruns, along with the names of the runners, expected run times, the category/ type of speedrun, and donation incentives (prizes you can win by donating during a specific speedrun, additional caveats you can create for the speedrunners, etc.): https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule
As usual I'm mostly here for that old N64 stuff and plattformers. Not too many runs catching my eye so I'll just tune in when I have the time.
Runs I'll definitely watch though:
Mario Kart 64 with Skips by Abney: Mind blowing run, nostalgia and a great runner.
I wanna kill the Kamillia 2 by BLABLAFU: Big fan of all the I wanna... plattformer fangames and BBF has a really great shade of dry humor that really connects with me. He is also the ragemaster himself
Pokemon yellow race between Gunnermaniac and Pokeguy: Love the old pokemon stuff and a race is always great. Also really like Gunner. Can't say I know too much about Pokeguy apart from him being really skilled.
DK Tropical Freeze race between Kruncha, Michael Goldfish and Spikevegeta: Fun game, race and 3 great guys running it, one of them being Spikevegeta? Yes please
These are the ones I really want to watch. If I have the time I'll try to catch some Zelda(Twillight Princess), Portal and Megaman stuff

FYI the schedule says Gold, not Yellow, I believe... so it'll be Pokemon Gen2, not Gen1
First 2 hours in 160p because provider does working on internet cable for better internet or something..... and thats going to happen every day during this AGDQ around this time. :/
But thats not gonna stop me from enjoying the awesome runs. Hollow Knights looks nice. :D
I am definitely enjoying the lineup, lots of N64, Zelda (yes!!!) and old school games. Times are not horribly convenient for me given my interests below, but hey there are always the VODs.
Tonight: Marjora's Mask, probably will miss Portal (sigh) Mon: EJ2, SGnG Tues: Rayman 2, Bastion, MK64, SMB3, SMB RPG Wed: ES3, Twilight Princess Thurs: Prey, Doom 2, Wind Waker Fri: Diablo 2, FF4, SM Sunshine, FF9 Sat: Link to the Past, SM Odyssey
Also one complaint I have already - some of these interviews are just way too long. I realise why they have them, but they are dragged out a bit I feel.
On January 07 2019 00:37 DarkPlasmaBall wrote: Like TheNewEra, I'm also usually here for the N64 and platformer games!
The runs I'm most interested in watching:
Sunday- DKC, LoZ:MM Monday- Bomberman 64, Crash Bandicoot, Splatoon 2 Tuesday- Rayman 2, Mario Kart 64, SMB3, SM RPG Wednesday- LoZ:TP Thursday- Crypt of the Necrodancer, LoZ:WW Friday- Diablo 2, Pokemon Gold, FF4, SM Sunshine, FF9 Saturday- Puyo Puyo Tetris, Luigi's Mansion, LoZ:ALttP, SM Odyssey, Super Metroid
Any other suggestions?
Oh I totally missed crypt of the necrodancer thats also something I'm gonna look forward to.
And yeah you're right It's gold not yellow. my mind associates Gunner with Yellow
Any idea about bonus incentives? Which game might happen?
Usually bonus incentives can be found when you go to Donate any money and select the option to put that money towards a specific cause (game incentives, naming a save file, choosing a special character, killing vs. saving the Metroid animals, etc.); I'm not sure if there's a master list of all the donation incentives accessible elsewhere.
I normally look at games I have never heard of and get surprised how much fun it was! But let's take a "normal" look:
Have to try to catch PJ and Actraiser 2 today! And maybe find out what the hell "any% arranged mode x68k sound on" is for Castlevania Chronicles ... Momodora could be something to check out. Super Mario Bros. 3mix race will be fun N++ and after that WC3 Mega Man X1 relay race sounds promising The Awful Games Block The Dead Cells race The FF4 Free Enterprise Race (personal highlight) but that already is in my VOD-section
Barely caught 2 minutes of Castlevania SotN, I set aside time to watch that every single time except today. So many games to catch up on but so little time.
For Warcraft 3 and all the Castlevania games, have they changed much in the last, idk, 6 months? If not, I might just skip those in the vod this year and catch some other runs.
Definitely watching Awful Games no matter what, Mega Man Zero 2 (I almost ran that myself once... almost), Portal, Metal Gear Solid, and Shadow of the Colossus, Jak and Crash, all (most) of the races I gotta watch. I haven't seen any Dead Cells gameplay since it first came out (or maybe the first beta release?) so that should be fun. Splatoon 2 sounds really interesting.
I don't wanna say "there are too many good and extremely good-bad runs" because that's impossible, but maybe "I hate how I have no time to watch every run."
Can't wait to watch the Hollow Knight run, that game made me love games again.
Why are there so many guys at AGDQ wearing make-up and women's clothing, by the way? Is that some meme or GDQ running gag? Like "save the animals"?
I'm also really curious to see what a Diablo 2 run looks like. It's not like you can plan it very much beforehand, and the world record would likely go to the first guy who finds Ral+Sol or something.

MrLlamaSC is a total boss when it comes to Diablo 2 runs Very entertaining and smart strategies.

Wait was there a full-cosplay couch that I missed? When was this??? I missed everything and need answers, dammit!
*According to fan art on Twitter, I assume this was for the Nier: Automata run. I hear that's changed a lot since the game came out, so I'll have to fit that in to my schedule now for sure.

I think I saw one of their Diablo runs a few years ago. iirc there is a pretty early save/quit farming for the Act 1 boss that drops a lot of runes to complete a rune word.

All 5 on the couch of Nier: Automata cosplayed as some characters.

It it, but also lots of game knowledge and mechanics, as they are underleveled and not well equipped the whole time. The boss for runes is the countess from a side quest.
So if you like Diablo 2, you should watch the run. It will be quite entertaining.

Yeah for sure, I'm looking forward to it. The rune farming is just a small slice of the run and kind of an interesting side thing on how they manage item RNG.

With talking and try and repeat.
There is a way to manipulate drop rng in singleplayer, but that isnt allowed in speedrun. Also The Countess is a big exception to this and is best to farm solo. You may know this, but technical: + Show Spoiler +
Anything that can drop an item (monster, chests) starts the drop calculator with "does it drop", ingame as "no drop". Lets say chance this no drop is 60%. If the check is true, no item will drop. If the check is untrue, an item will drop and the calculation continues with type of item and then quality like unique or set if possible. Potion, gems, runes dont have quality. 0% does not neccesary means, that when a monster can drop, that it will drop. It still can not drop. It just increaes the chance of a drop to a certain point. Something something technical im not really sure about and it might not be fully correct at some point, but we roll with that.
With the command /playersX (1 to 8), you can simulate multiple players in the game. At 3, 5 and 7 players the game lowers the no drop chance. So in the end more items in general can drop. With each "player" more, monsters get 50% more health.
The Countess can drop up to six items i think. These six drops are divided into special rune drops and regular drops. The Countess is an execption to this manipulation with /playersX, because lowering the no drop chance increases the rate of regular drops. Which means that it kinda overwrites the special rune drops. If you know what i mean.
Anyone an idea what happend in Mega Man Relay Race at 50 minute mark? Runners were laughing and commentators didnt saw it i guess and kept commentating the games.
Oh, so one should always do Countess on Players 1 because the additional drops from /players 8 overwrite rune drops?
I wonder if Countess runs are even part of an Ama run, since Amas don't really have amazing low level runewords like Leaf. Really looking forward to this now.
Yes, in the end you get more runes. Also just for drops dont go /p8 as you only increase monster health by additional 50% but it does not change no drop chance. This only happens at breakpoints /p3, 5 and 7. And 1 with regular chances. <.< So /p7 is drop wise the same as 8. If your killspeed does not get slower, it doesnt matter much which number you choose. Every additional player gives +50% xp in singleplayer. If you want xp, /p8 is to optimize that.
Its up to which skills Amas use. insight for meditation aura on merc - repleneshises mana faster - could be good. Though im not sure about speedruns at diablo 2. >.>
Watching Link to the Past, only six minutes in at the moment, but it makes me feel so old lol.
Although the damageless requirement for this run definitely would make me go crazy. Don't think I'd have pulled that back in the day to save my life let alone speedrunning that...

It's ahead of last year.
Same as every other year really, bulk of donations always come in on the final day.
That's reassuring
not only are we ahead of last year(by something substantial like 150k), remember that there is still money not added from subs and stuff like that. Also the last 2-3 games are heavyhitters. Save vs. Kill the animals + a 3 hour long run of SM Odysee (in which surely a meme will develop for which everyone will spam donations)

Good points! I believe I was worried last year around this time too, only to (happily) be shown how hard the community can rally at the end of AGDQ!
Yeah same runner. It was 4 min over estimate. He failed a lot of skips and died several times causing change of path and some need for farm. I cannot but wonder if talking that much does not lower his concentration. I guess public does love it, but run itself was not crisp at all.

I'm ok with not so crisp run. I wouldn't know it myself as i'm not a speedrunner. Besides when i watch these events i want a fun/good commentary more than having good run.
I'd watch the worldrecord vods if i really wanted to watch a good run
Zeus was a bit too much for my taste too, but like in the past when he was running: If you like it, you will get highly entertained. Also he made the mentioned mistakes negligible and the run an entertaining experience.
And to recommend something i feel not many people would like: FF9. The run is really long, but its the perfect example of coming together, enjoying videogames and having a great time with friends. You have a game, people who really have mastered it and show that, lots of talks about kinda anything with laughter. You dont have to focuse on it the whole time to not miss tricks and skills, its more relaxing. Its over nine hours in the end, though.

Ty Silvanel! I enjoy showcasing the runs.
There was some really nice stuff in there. Some low hp moments were unbelievable tense! I know not everything was planned, take the 5 hp against the cyberdemon - but that you try it means, you believe in your skills to do that. And that says much about showcasing things.
Many of the runs were extraordinary, the commentary was great, game choices were solid, format was excellent, and the "UI" of the stream was the best ever. Such a great event that keeps getting better. I had to stop myself from donating more than I could afford lol.

I didn't even know they did D2. I have to watch that tonight. While we're on the subject, what runs are must-watch for you guys? I ask because I probably only watched 25% of the whole event. I recall the mario games being good, Crash being good despite the constant interruptions from purple shirt, Jak being hilarious, and um.... some indie type game where you play a girl who turns into a cat played on insane difficulty. Damn what was that game called......

I can't speak to the whole run, but definitely check out the blindfolded FF9 menu navigation:
The D2 run was really fun while also being really heartbreaking in how unforgiving the RNG was while giving just enough to make the run work.
I think players underrate the raw stats on the cyberdemon if they only know it from nostalgia or the fights in doom 2 and tower of babel. Second fastest monster in the game and the splash area of effect is wicked large. The big key problem in that marble throne on E4M6 is that it's built with stairs and not a slope. I lose control of DG the second I slide down the stairs on a backwards dodge.
