Assuming you know how the editor works, I'd get a feel for how the game works, and take a look at existing maps. You should have a working knowledge of map features and how they contribute to gameplay (for example, distances between mains, watch towers, positioning of gold mineral patches, etc.). Again, look at already created maps for some inspiration. After that, I'd probably try to formulate a map concept. Do you want to make your map revolve around a unique feature (such as low ground mains battling control of a high ground center, or perhaps a low-resource map with a difficult to secure third base)? Or just a "standard" map layout? Keep in mind unit pathing and likely routes of play. Flesh out your idea in the map editor and make a thread for people's suggestions. That's pretty much the mapmaking process. And as always, the more you practice, the better you will become. EDIT: Obligatory welcome to TL

Even with workable terrain concepts, making the map aesthetically appealing enough for play is also a fairly daunting task. EDIT: Obligatory welcome to TL Thanks, but I meant more like "How do I use it" instead of "How to make a good/balanced map" Lol, sorry, and thanks again for your post

To be honest, I don't actually think there's a step-by-step Galaxy Editor guide available anywhere.

Layers Terrain - Cliffs: standard height cliffs to create map variation and the border of the map - Textures: to make the map not look like crap - Ramps: Access points to cliffs Units - Neutral Items: minerals, gas, xel'naga towers - Base structures: plop these down at an expo site to judge how far to put the resources apart for each base then delete them Doodads - Doodads: of all shapes and sizes most of them are just there to look pretty. Important ones are strategic doodads like strategy smoke/grass and pathing controls (no walk zones, no build zones) Points - Start Point: Where the players starting base is Other features Map Bounds Shouldn't have to mess with this, but know that the YELLOW bound is the farthest you can move the center of the camera and the BLUE bound is a hard boundary where no unit can go. Map > Map Status This will tell you if your map meets the basic criteria for a melee map Map > Player Properties For some reason player 15 defaults to hostile and the Map Status wants it to be neutral. Whatever.
