Outside edges of the map are the lowest ground and as you get closer to the middle of the map it continues to go up and up. There are different "limited" pathways depending on which cliff height you are on. The high ground middle is basically sectioned off but end game once you get rid of the rocks in the middle it will definitely help with flow of large armies.
You can expand aggressively into the middle to take control of the high ground and therefore have more small choked pathways to defend or you can expand on the low ground, take out rock towers (kill one, both fall) and get a "pocket-3rd"
