I've debating posting this build, because it has given me a tonne of easy wins over people who don't know what to do when faced with it, but as it's beta, here it is:
10 - overlord
13 - pool
15 - extractor
16 - (right before pool finishes larva comes out) overlord
16 - (100% pool) queen
18 - roach den
18 - extractor
100% queen - Lair
4 of the 8 supply before hitting 26 should be roaches, other 4 drones, if you know they arn't being aggressive, push the 4 roaches until 22-26
26 - overlord
100% lair - burrow
Burrow should be starting right as the roaches start to leave your base, and finish right before they get to the enemy base.
Pressure with the roaches, micro to avoid any of the 4 dieing, unless they have mobile detection just keep popping up and down killing off units
This is where the build diverges completely dependent on map/opponent BO, you can transition easily into:
mass roach:
upg speed and just keep pumping them
if you've knocked him off balance so hard he's still reeling (ie killed his queen/mass of workers)
Hydras
get hydra den and start an expand
if they went marauders or air/turtled up with defences
Mutas
get spire and start an expand
toss going for imortals and skimping on stalkers or turtleing zerg with no lair starting
You will be high minerals low gas with mutas, PUMP LINGS, muta-ling rapes anything toss has unless you're way way behind in army size. also don't be afraid to thrown down a spine crawler or 2 if the toss is looking to start pressuing your door.
The goal of this opening is to keep early game control, and force the opponent to do what you want them to. If they skimp on scan, sit behind their mineral line unborrow, target fire 1 worker down (1 shot from 3 roaches) and burrow again, and just keep doing this in between your macro. A toss will be forced to go robo to get observers, which if he follows through with the roach counter thinking mass roaches are going to keep coming(imortals) you can just destroy his army with muta-ling
THIS IS NOT A PERFECT BO
counters:
1 gate tech with 2 stalkers into fast imortals, the 2 stalkers, while they won't kill the roaches, can keep the roaches busy enough to delay for the imortal, and then a 4 stalker 2 imortal push can be hard to stop right after.
super fast pool with ling speed, the lings if microed right can be difficult to deal with/prevent from killing your queen and the first few roaches before you have critical mass. If you survive and he keeps going mass ling, just mass roach and laugh
Also, if zerg has lair about the same time/a bit later and gets an overseer, he can mop up the roaches in his base without too much trouble
Good terrans, terrans who can keep up production of marine marauder while harrassing with reapers forces you to keep forces back to defend, I wouldn't say it's a loss vs good terrans, just that it will be an uphill battle. The goal however is to force him to use up his energy on scans to kill your roaches while you get hydras to roll through his marine-light force (less minerals more gas means most terrans will pump nearly straight marauders unless they scout mutas)
Key things to remember:
- no lings before 26 supply unless absolutely needed.
- roach den right after you spend the money on queen/overlord
- lair immediately after queen pops out (100 gas should be right on time)
- keep up on spawn larva (obviously)
- the build caps out 1-base mining (16 drones on minerals) fairly quickly, take care not to go overboard on drones
- micro your roaches with burrow, if you fail at this micro, then don't use this build... roaches take a second or so to burrow, so hit w (new burrow hotkey) earlier then later, don't take too many risks, the point is to keep them in their base and busy while you do your tech transition.
- turn on unit health bars so they are on 100% of the time, this allows for easy viewing of which roaches to burrow/unburrow, otherwise I've found you can forget about a burrowed one while it sits there at 100%
I'm 1150 in plat div 7 using this build as my mainstay, hope it helps some people.
edit:
so far, in my experience, if I see toss getting fast void ray, this gets hydras out in time, and meanwhile he's lost all his workers to roaches he can't defend against (burrow the target of the void ray whenever it gets to 2 beams if he tries to stay and defend)
