I hope Sheth can pick up enough points to get through here, although I do think that Stephano will win Other than those two, go all terrans! Let's balance this up!

Yikes, anyone that makes it to the RO32 this time around has made one hell of a journey. Really hope HuK Sheth, and Mycerion make it deep and that Stephano wins it.
the peoples champion out already , I'm really hoping major scores some points in this one, I'd like to see him win the whole thing, or get another second place

He wouldn't have been. No he didn't do good damage. Cloud had that game by a mile.
Major and Cloud are going to do well this week if they can get some good points, everyone above them on the bubble is already out. Its not too bad for JonnyREcco, Bischu and HasuObs either, with the people closest on their tails also failing to get any points.

It's different casters each qualifier.
The TeamLiquid coverage starts at the semi-finals. Before that community casters and players are free to stream as they wish.

He played in one of the other qualifiers, and got into something like the ro32 I think before he had to leave since the qualifier conflicted with a Millennium tournament.

I don't get why he hasn't played in lots of them, to rack up points. I mean, is he so cocky that he's like ''I only need to play once, because I will go all the way when I decide to participate''?

LZgamer, iNcontroL and Machine have played in the TSL4 qualifiers in previous weeks (though i think only Machine out of the 3 got to Ro32 once), IdrA is the main 1 of EG who hasn't touched TSL4 at all other then casting with Ret last week.

It can be tough against cytoplasm, and overall against zerg. But yes he has good chances to take it all.
With all the carnage above them in the point standings, Ziktomini and ToD just blew absolutely golden opportunities to jump into the top eight. Even though so much of the top eight fell out, the next group of people in striking distance has also really collapsed.

Indeed, let me just add that Babyknight will climb to #1 in the points ranking, unless he wins the qualifier.

What again? latest 6 qualifiers there were always 2 or 3 terrans in the top 8. Latest 2 were won by terrans. Yes overall terran is doing a bit worse that the other 2 races but this is olny the second time there are no terrans in a qualfier.
And in my opinion their are very few good foreign terrans compared to P and Z. So not a bit suprised they doing less in the eu/na qualis. Although this is indeed really bad.

a bit?! 1 terran qualified by points. 2 by winning a qualifier and the other 2 were qualified because of TSL3.

They will likely have around 6 or 7 of the 29 qualifer spots. Thats more than a bit worse imo. Beasty and Taeja did great last week, but overall they're still having a really had time in this qualifiers.

Agreed. The person in the best position to make a move into the top 8 at this point seems to be Elfi.

This is no "bit".
uhhm so far 6 protoss, 3 terrans and 4 zerg QUALIFIED, so the 3 seeds not included. So nothing wrong there it is in the point were they have less. At this moment only 3 terrans out of 16 are qualified by points so yes they are doing less there. And as i said foreigners have less good terrans in my opinion and the best 2 (kas and thorzain) are already seeded

That'll shut up the balance whiners!
Terrans just lurk so they can get a free buff next patch! It's long term investment. More seriously I think it's just a coincidence that HSC V & this qualifier happen the same week.

The game is broken and zerg needs a nerf very soon. It's not just these tournaments, look at the last Dreamhack top8.
Elfi played against a Terran in the first round, afterwards he didn't played anything but PvP. He can actually reach the finals playing only PvP. It seems like a Stephano - Elfi final to me.

The problem is Korean terrans, they just keep doing tons of small extra things which can put terran on equal foot. Korean protoss & zergs had weak periods facing foreigners in mirror, Korean terrans never had those periods.

Not really true, however whenever Terran wins in macro games they're "totally outplaying their opponents" and when Zergs win macro games it's "what you expect". There's always an excuse.

They win macro games only with ecocheese like 3 cc and get unpunished because of the still possible timing attack, then they just abuse drops. Before the queens buff, terrans & zerg entered midgame even ecowise & it lead to great games, it was low eco always fighting. Now it's way more PvZ like & therefore less interesting.

It's not Stephano being so bad (it's obviously his worst matchup, yet he managed to defeat violet not so long ago and usually takes at least one map in a bo3 vs a zerg), it's Cytoplasm being very good at ZvZ. He hasn't lost a map to Stephano in a tournament yet if my memory is correct.

Well in this qualifier Select and Tarson got eliminated in TvT and Major got walkovered because his internet went out. So the T results could have been better.

The good Terrans weren't even eliminated by zerg.
the TvT are the reasons we had 1 terran in ro16 if they face other races before there would have been zero :p
Thing is Terran is only struggling outside Korea, and it's the very top level of play that the game must be balanced around so... (I mean I know even Korean Terrans complain, but statistically there's no imbalance really)
Watch the actual games, almost all the wins in TvZ are 2rax

They win macro games only with ecocheese like 3 cc and get unpunished because of the still possible timing attack, then they just abuse drops. Before the queens buff, terrans & zerg entered midgame even ecowise & it lead to great games, it was low eco always fighting. Now it's way more PvZ like & therefore less interesting.
Whatever yall think, you gotta agree that its freaking stupid as hell to give zerg +2 queen range AND overlord speed buff at once. Should do 1 at a time god dammit and see how that effects the game not 2 buffs jeez.

Cytoplasm isn't that excellent at ZvZ. His record in ZvZ is <50% and this isn't just to Nerchio. Stephano has a higher ZvZ win % than him by a large %.
What Stephano is, is unstable in ZvZ. He's able to beat top Zergs in ZvZ - ie Violet and Nerchio - but is also able to lose to Zergs that are worse than him in every other match up. When Stephano plays ZvZ you never know when he's going to win, and when he's going to get owned 0-2 in ten minutes. This was one of the latter times.
stephano needs more practise! He just moved in to a flat in paris and there wasn't any internet there at the first couple of days/weeks(?). Why can't he practise in the Millenium house?

It's always been a problem, but Stephano is not helpless in ZvZ - he's beaten excellent ZvZers in other tournaments. He's just not stable at it, and this costs him tournaments at times - this time, it cost him TSL 4.

Kind of, if you want to win big tournaments you need to be able to beat good terrans and protosses too Cytoplasm has become a lot better the last months and has done some good results here and there, I actually took interest in his results after his consecutive wins against Stephano in a team cup, his training in Korea paid off. He is not yet at the level of Stephano / Nerchio / Dimaga / Ret, he lacks some experience (pretty sure had this match happened live / on stage, Stephano would have won), but he is getting there. Maybe TSL will be his break into the scene ?

What again? latest 6 qualifiers there were always 2 or 3 terrans in the top 8. Latest 2 were won by terrans. Yes overall terran is doing a bit worse that the other 2 races but this is olny the second time there are no terrans in a qualfier.
a bit?! 1 terran qualified by points. 2 by winning a qualifier and the other 2 were qualified because of TSL3.
And as i said foreigners have less good terrans in my opinion and the best 2 (kas and thorzain) are already seeded
well i guess koreans have less good zerg and toss then. that means we should balance for terran winrate 55%, okay?
the perception that there are more decent z and p in the community comes from the imbalance that is there for a long time in the foreign scene. just look at the top 8: cyto, real, tarrantius, roof, cupcake, babyk, monchi, elfi. in no world is THAT the elite of p and z either...
cupcake really won lucifron 2-0 ? really really ? the guy played terran and as far as I know never won anything for 2years and now his rolling with protoss after 6months
I think Monchi is blowing a huge lead he had by continuing to attack. He will just be down on tech massively if he doesn't do any damage at all at this point.

He made a smart decision to change :p More Terrans should do the same.
I was checking the points ranking and noticed that ClouD got points in 7 of the 9 qualifiers so far. Nobody else managed to do the same. Impressive, however it is still not enough to be in the top 8.

Yeah, but the Korean qualifiers are all Bo3 and neither DRG or MKP has made it far in those tournaments. I'm not saying that we should seed them in or anything, it's just that with qualifier only you'll get some random results (look at Sniper qualifying for the OSL)

Same as Fraer, he canceled.^^ Don't know why, sorry. He's going this time, though, he qualified again.
But he's really good, he just doesn't have a lot of chances for exposure apart from ladder and online cups, because he's been banned from the German EPS and ESL events in general for a couple of years because he cheated in CounterStrike.

Yesssssss, I don't think he knows any of the top8 except for maybe Cyto and Elfi, lol. Why not get casters who follow the scene?
Why does it matter? They are there to comment games not recite players histories. Not to say it's not good if they do but it's hardly the primary focus for a sc2 commentator.

Yes and no.
Having knowledge about players is not just about their history: it is more about their playstyle which makes the cast a lot better from an analytical point of view.
I would expect though that even though they probably don't know the players that they don't make the mistakes that happened during MLG Arena qualifiers with casters not even knowing what race somebody played or what country he was from.

@LiquidRet disagrees And me too.
I wanna know background stuff about players, specially if they are not so much known.
Unfortunately players fail to push themself by for example giving their team and twitter in the lobbies of the weekl cups.. So then casters would be able to better plug them. And unfortunately many casters are not doing that anyway because they naturally are primarily interested in their own endeavours. However - they cant live without each others and the sooner it becomes a good practice to promote each other the better for everyone.

I'm pretty sure he is. I used to play Dota with him on the SA Dota server a few years ago and I've heard that he's a fairly prominent member in the relatively small SA SC2 scene.
I was a little disappointed in the casting from the Zeek.tv guys today. They missed a tonne of stuff on the mini-map and missed a lot of reasoning behind gameplay decisions. Usually they're not too bad but today they really grated on me for some reason.
Also, BigFatPanda was losing his cool hardcore in the chat when they were waiting for the Stephano game, a little unprofessional and off-putting to me.
I do really appreciate them taking so much time trying to cast these and get the games out to people though, so props for that.
Day9 said that perfectly, that attack by CupCake was pure balls. I expected him to try to outsmart the opponent, maybe go for a strategic snipe of a few buildings. Instead he just runs up the ramp and horribly manhandles elfi's army. Great play by Cupcake!
Elfi winning on the back of PVP's lol. Isn't his PvP his best matchup?
Regardless, any player winning 6 PvP's in a row to get to the TSL finals is an incredible feat.
In other news:
I think Cupcake should have just stopped trying to blink up there when he had made that intention SO clear to Elfi. Elfi just massed zealot immortal and theres no way you are going to beat immortal zealot when you already use a blink to get up to high ground.
I think Cupcake should have done one of a couple things:
1. Warp in some sentries, and then blink up. Forcefield from low ground so that zealots can't hit the stalkers. Then you can start to use some blink micro to try to make some magic happen.
2. Go Dark templar and expand to a far away base(like bottom right or top left). Eventually Elfi's going to push, but you can try to go either dark templar + stalker blink counter attack, or you can go high templar and storm and try to transition to chargelot archon. I feel that the composition Elfi went is a hard counter to what Cupcake was doing(stalker blink up into main), but any storm to that zealot sentry army would be incredible. Archons wouldn't be bad either.
3. Keep faking a stalker blink huge push, and then go hidden tech like double stargate. Might be able to win in one battle.

I think Mr. Bitter said it best when he said Ohana produces the craziest games, I've seen more crazy base trades and recovery situations on that map than every other map in the current tournament pool combined (Ok, probably an exaggeration, but Ohana just seems to produce weird games.)

I dont' think he should have ever went for the base trade to begin with imo.
wouldn't you say mutaling has the advantage in a base race though?
Sure except the base trade started before he even had mutas in production. I think he should have kept roach/ling (especially after killing the third with no cancel and seeing his opponent moving out with gateway units only). He could have done a flank with roach/ling and won the game there imo rather then go for base race and then mutas come in like after the natural was destroyed.

That's because Ohana means family, and family means crazy.

I believe that's intentional, Rich said something about it earlier in the thread
If Elfi win this he is insanely lucky. If Real wins his semifinal Elfi will have played 8 out of 9 sets PvP, and the one terran he played was an unknown in the round of 512.
Okey winning 8 PvP sets in a streak would be amazing, but it is by far Elfis best matchup.
To have your best matchup every round from round 256 to the final is insane. Well from a pure mathematical stand point is it just unlikely, to be exact is the chance that you will have your best matchup in 8 matches in sucession about 0.015%. Meaning that Elfi would need to attend 6561 more qualifiers before it will occur again ^^
Okay this is assuming that there is an equal amount of races signed up for the tournament and that all races have equal chance of winning, which might be a weird assumtion given the current state of SC2 x)
But still, pretty lucky, I find it hillarious though, GO ELFI

LOL at real just running them into the zerg army alone wtf xD.
I feel like it's as legitimate as one base mothership.
Idk I have been seeing it work late game zvp more and more. Carriers are good if you can get a good amount, but they aren't good when you run 4 straight into the whole zerg army with no support .
Infestors just take all the fun out of battles. Much like Force Fields it just sucks to have micro reduced to zero and unfortunately there ist nothing to break it (aside from recall?).

Yeah elfi has been lucky, but remember that he took out major and bly last week to make the semifinals. While he's been super lucky this week, he can take out good non-protoss players as well.
I've seen the Carrier switch catch Zergs off guard in the late game because they have too many Brood Lords and Spine Crawlers, which are useless against them, but you really need a good number of them and you need much better Mothership control than Real showed that game.
Still, super exciting series so far, sort of rooting for Roof so we can see some more PvZ in the finals.
Carriers are fine, continual ineffectual harassment and losing almost your entire army in a useless recall then donating your entire Carrier force while not getting a single Vortex to work is not.

This is a great post, thanks for running the numbers on that.
I don't know if this is possible, but I'd love for the casting to start at ro8 and beyond like the korean qualifiers tomorrow. Just because of the different story lines of whos going to qualify and being the last qualifier, I think it would make it even more epic than just the ro4.

Voids are completely worthless against fungal, carriers do fine as long as you upgrade them well and don't donate them for no reason
squirtle destroyed coca in the showmatch yesterday with carriers
im seeing alot more pros going carriers now in PvZ
that "unbeatable zerg army" would actually look completely beatable if the toss has 200food of carrier/storm the same way the zerg had 200food of broodlord/infestor/corrupter. instead the protoss army was maybe 40food smaller because he was harassing around the map with 36 food of gateway units and 4food of warp prism
carriers when they reach a critical mass actually counter nueral parasite because the infestors come in with their 7range nueral and carriers blast them with 9range launch and fast up-front dps. carriers do heavy up-front dps taking out nueral parasite really quickly. plus there are high templars standing right behind the carriers and they come in and lay down storms on the entire zerg army and infestors die in like a single storm so
carrier+storm is going to become the normal lategame pvz composition within 2-3 months once hero/squirtle/seed start showing how to use it. i as a master protoss have found its much much easier to win with that than with archon toilets (but you still get a mothership but normally just keep the carriers in front of the mothership using the cloaking field more than the vortex
heck also throw 2 archons into the carrier army just for splash against corrupters i normally do that to. with 6-8 ht's for storm

I think he was banned a couple of years ago for cheating in COUNTER-STRIKE. I agree that if this was a CS tournament maybe he should be banned, but I think he deserves a second chance, we've forgiven a lot of players who have cheated in SC2 so why not this kid who cheated in a different game?

You get penalty points in esl for things like not showing up etc. Naniwa was thrown out of esl at the beginning of the game, cause of it. So we dont know if he really cheated. The only thing I see in his profile is a no show, where he points for.

I have to agree, I don't enjoy this trend of constantly using "oooooooooooh", "aaaaaaah", and "uuuaaaarrghghgh" as part of your standard casting repertoire ... Mr. Bitter also tends to do this nowadays.
With how much roof likes base trading why not make a million spines at natural and just commit to the base trade fully? It's a win/win you keep your main + natural and your opponent will lose his natural at minimum and his army will only kill the third.

This. Cheating in one computer game shouldn't automatically reset your status in the next. However if he has served his time so to speak I see no objection in him competing. I my gut feeling tells me TL thinks the same about this matter.
In every sport there are some (young) people who make a mistake and get rightfully punished for that. However that doesn't mean they are not talented and can't redeem themselves after their ban from competition.
Though if somebody is caught cheating even after his first ban that's a whole different story. He has shown he can't learn from his mistakes and deserves a more permanent punishment.

His ZvP style reminds me of FXO.Lucky, they both seem to either go straight to a mid game base race and handle it excellently or hide behind broods and 50000 spines to mindgame them when they prepare for said base races.

no hacking, different reason.
Not only Dimaga but also Fraer, HappyZerg and quite a few other well known players at the time. However most of them were not maphacking or things like that but (and keep in ind TSL qualifiers were played on a ladder back then) cheating in the way of playing against one single opponent more times as allowed within the timeframe. So no maphack or something like that for most of them. They "just" cheated to obtain more points on the ladder in the last couple hours to finish in the top spots for qualifications. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=108352

Curious. What did ToD do? O_o
ToD had a past in WC3 aliasing for other players in clan wars.
I honestly feel that bans across games is something we have to be very careful with. Even though cheating is very bad we should also not take the possibility away from them to have a second chance. Only in very severe cases (saviOr comes to mind) should we take away that chance.
How do you scout for this? You need something out before that first stalker. Or is it more that you must spend 150 more minerals on a cannon or a gateway that will die when you push out?
Haven't watched too too much lately so trying to figure out why this isnt a little more common.

Sentries are a pretty hard counter to it is why and then building wall off with sentry makes it hard.
If elfi wins, Lalush qualifies as a certainty, because then there will only be 6 people who can pass him simultaneously, putting him at either 8th or tied for 7th.
If elfi doesn't win, Lalush could still lose out in a three or four way tie for the last few spots.

This time toss didn't even see the third base, just saw his pylon destroyed. So it's just zergs punishing greedy tosses on this map atm. He knew that zerg could be on two bases and pull off a number of all-ins, but he didn't wall in or make sentries.

I thought you have 1 sentry, you drop in on your pylon side then you have 20 sec until it goes so you need to have started another sentry going in order to have more cannons up if you build a cannon the instant you put down the ff.
edit: Not complaining. I'm trying to logic why we don't see it more often. I think it's very strong as only a probe scout could check for this and it seems like intelligently positioned lings should prevent that.

Absolutely agree every player should get a second chance. However if a player within for example a month switches to another game the ban should also be upheld there. That's also why a ban should be reasonable and not lifelong for a first offence. That's also not the case in "normal" sports.

Send a zealot out to try to check the drone count. probes can't get past the queen to see gas anymore, but zealots can get the info you need.
Anti-climactic ending.. But I loved roof's play, it was certainly his own and very unique, at the same time elfi was just too good, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of those players!

Because of scouting. Basically if close spawns were disabled Roof would have scouted Elfi and saw what was going on. Close spawns probably were disabled, but Roof didn't think they were so I just assumed they weren't.

That isnt the crappy spawn in that map. Its always non horizontal Spawns but rarely forced cross spawn.
God, it's lame to see that Roof can't handle a fight against elfi, he just always try to basetrade :/ Anyway, I don't understand how did he managed to reach finals, his play was very poorly.
PS : oh god, the stream chat is so full of trash it's incredible, constant whine of "X OP", flame on day9, etc...seriously, all you guys flaming like you're doin', shame on you ;_;

Why would you engage a stronger army when you can do more damage by abusing your position on the map? If you saw his games vs Real, you saw some amazing macro and multitasking coming from him and several glorious engagements, but in the cases vs Elfi he just did what he could to buy some time....
Who enforces cross spawns only on Entombed Valley? The TSL version enfoces the same rules as the GSL version which I assume most people would have some familiarity with.
GSL_Entombed Valley: Added neutral supply depot at entrance to main; cannot spawn horizontally from each other (Ex: If you spawn at 1, enemy can't spawn at 11. If you spawn at 5, enemy can't spawn at 7)

My dream scenario is Stephano winning against Sheth in the final, with Major and Cloud knocked out in the semis and Select picking up a few points. Those are all players I want to see in TSL and I'm cheering for any Terran at this point!
I can't believe how bad HuK is doing in these qualifiers... and I can't believe MMA (Random LOL) is doing so bad either. :'( My two favorite players slumping hardcore.

Yeah, looked like HuK's bracket to lose this time around too... Thought he would be the one PvPing his way to victory. Alas.
Oh well, there's always tomorrow.
The KR qualifiers are just crazy though, there's just SOOO much talent down there that it's hard for anyone to be consistent.
Poor terrans. Only three qualified, only two in top eight in points. This qualifier, only one made it to the Ro16. It is the dark age of the terran depression.

Last week at WCS France, there was only 2 terrans, one made it to the winners final, lost to Stephano, then won the losers final, to lost again to Stephano in the grand final, so no, it's not every terran that is slumping.
What I also would like to point is that every game where Terran is involved isn't one-sided, many of them are actually pretty close.
