How far do you think Polt will go ? He hasn't seemed as dominant in the last tourneys he took part in... Don't get me wrong, he's still a top dog, and getting to the finals of I-don't-remember-which-tournament vs Trap was an amazing acomplishment. So was top8 of NA WCS. But I don't know, he doesn't seem as confident and as unbreakable as he once was I think...

Yeah, No EU based pros made the trip. Probably a bad EV format given the volatility of single elimn to justify trans antlantic flights. Great opportunity for an aspiring pro to make a deep run, so it should still be a lot of fun. Would love to see Huk get a result, but hard to imagine the invite doesn't go to polt/violet/bomber.

Violet was the first pro I ever played, was in a weekly cup or something.
The map was Metalopolis, I was playing protoss. I went for FFE, he for 8 pool. I was very nervous, panicked and tried to wall of natural (on Metalopolis!!). I died horribly.
So Violet playing cheesy vs lesser opponents doesn't surprise me!

So far I've been pretty disappointed, they are hardly streaming any games. No Polt or Bomber either despite the fact they are probably the most hyped for this Tourney (Bomber even sponsored by Redbull and they aren't even showing him play!)

Man I feel bad for some of these players that go up against some of the best players in the world and are just jerked around, especially on stream/main stage...
That can't be. No Master would have that many resources that early on.
Probably nerves. Hes probably never played someone this good plus being cast and on main stage. It can really get to you.
Hm I'd agree that he would do more misslicks, forget a tech building etc., but a master league player should have enough routine to not accumulate 1,5k minerals on 3gate/robo with 20 probes under any circumstances. Well good effort either way and playing on the stage is a great experience.
That can't be. No Master would have that many resources that early on.
he is not masters, can confirm. a master would read the situation better
anything is possible with protoss...
really it's more like nerves and scouting nothing threw him off his gameplan and then nerves got worse and he choked. it happens. unfamiliar setting, maybe unfamiliar gear, no concentration. sc2 is a hard game, it's easy to not play like yourself when you're not at your own desk.

Tournament nerves are something special let me tell you.
So the arguments for lower skill players on the streamchat seem to be:
1) It's good for the scene to have new players coming to tournaments 2) The first round is called the OPEN bracket, therefore it should be open for less skilled players
My point of view here is that, yes, we should have new players appearing in tournaments, but ostensibly Premier tournaments should be reserved for line-ups of premier players, with a sample of potentially promising unknowns in the first stages. Not 10 famous players and 90% players without even a liquipedia page, some of whom play to at most a diamond league standard.
Sure, there should be some unknowns being introduced to the tournament scene, if their skill merits it. Up-and-coming players are always a welcome sight. But low level players being added as filler, or a complete lottery of who is allowed to enter, occurring due to disinterest in the tournament from major players is a serious red flag about this being a premier tournament.

True... But 4 gate into expo? Even if you're shaking all over that's a weird decision to make.
I actually love watching these games. Taking the attitude that these games are bad because these players may not be the top tier pros is terrible, and only encourages players to avoid making the jump. These players don't deserve criticism for showing p to a tournament and having fun, they deserve our support, even if they aren't at the level at these pros.
Haha, this tournament.. I dont even know what to say

This is the reason people don't take eSports seriously. Everyone knows they are bad. In any other sport these players would be laughed off the field. If we wan't eSports to be taken seriously we have to show people serious players. This is a professional tournament, not Funday Monday.

No, it comes from people who buy products marketed at tournaments. You think Redbull put up 25k and a whole stage and cast because they just liked SC2? No.

They are doing way better than I would be.
This is the reason people don't take eSports seriously. Everyone knows they are bad. In any other sport these players would be laughed off the field. If we wan't eSports to be taken seriously we have to show people serious players. This is a professional tournament, not Funday Monday.
All sports have amateur tournaments and fun events
But I pretty much can't name any other amateur tourney that has 10000 spectators
Our local junior hockey team gets an average attendance around 8K.
Football events of scrub teams in germany get tons. Hell my club luton (england) had 8-10k average attendance in the. 5th footballing league
Except football (soccer) is already a well known and commonly played sport, even small teams can garner attention if they are decent. You can't compare a sport that has billions of fans to one that has a few million.
All sports start small and its the amateur and causal scenes that keep them alive

No. Normally people aren't really interested into sports they don't play, or didn't play in the past. Amateur scene allows people to "experience" the competition and meet a lot of people. I don't know this generation, but mine (i am from the early eightys), almost everybody i knew was on a football club. Guess which is the most popular sport on Spain by far. Do you think it is just for watching it ? Or because generations after generations play football ?
The money, is a byproduct of how well the amateur scene has managed to capt people interested into the sport.

Gold don't have 6k bank on 1 base.

Fair enough. Paris is also the only city in Europe I've been to where they can't tell the difference between Canadians and Americans. Weirdest thing, they just assume you're American (and the associated contempt they use thereby) no matter what if you're not UK English. Literally everywhere else people are like 'Canada? In Montreal nobody gives any fucks what you sound like. And in rural France they're pretty understanding and appreciative of attempts by foreigners to speak the language.
In Paris you're a non-entity whatever your status is anyway don't worry. (even footballers complained about it haha).
WE LOVE CANADA HAVE A BEER!' and I'm like 'Oh alright, if you insist.'
As a general rule of thumb, I think the best travel happens in not capitol cities.
That's a good point. Although I really loved Rome and Berlin.

Hey, HuK dropped a map to some random ladder hero, I can dream of the rage if someone gets knocked out. I just hope some random Protoss Masters player doesn't cheese Bomber out of the tournament with two Stargate/Gateway busts in a row a la Arthur.
dropping a map happens, a bo3 is a whole other story. Bomber has special skills regarding suicide tho could not build a bunker against someone 4gating him (wouldn't even surprise me he's almost worst than MKP regarding that)

First phase is generally pitting unknown players versus established pros so the games have been pretty one sided. The next stage is bound to show some great games though

someone tried to switch to LoL ? more seriously code B is brutal as fuck (way harder than ro32 WCS Eu xD) and getting 3rd twice for s3 is painful. He's obivously at least code A level considering his recent performance in SPL, which is pretty good for a terran.

The discussion wasn't about MKP being more relevant than other terrans. sAsImre said MKP was only relevant in Code B and PL. Which is like most Terrans cause if you lose in Code A, you fall to Code B for the entire season of Code S. Also MKP was only 1 map away from qualifying, 2 seasons in a row. But well w/e makes you feel better

MKP will be back! It's well supported that Terran have been having a hard time this past year, even consistent code s terrans (like MKP) are pushed into code a/b
MKP no longer has the ability to do it when it really matters (still does it in PL but that's all :D)
Go away
sorry to disturb you in your dream where MKP is relevant somewhere else than PL and code B <3
So like all terrans in Korea except Maru? And most of these terrans aren't even relevant in PL
There are 12 terrans in Code A.
And 15 in S1 and 9 in S2. You know what happened after
They all were more relevant in individual leagues than MKP without having to win a single game?
The discussion wasn't about MKP being more relevant than other terrans. sAsImre said MKP was only relevant in Code B and PL. Which is like most Terrans cause if you lose in Code A, you fall to Code B for the entire season of Code S. Also MKP was only 1 map away from qualifying, 2 seasons in a row. But well w/e makes you feel better

MarineKing is no longer Code S level though.
Technically correct since he's not in code S. Doesn't mean he won't get back in, just look at his record. Though of course you can't come out of not playing half a year and expect to perform at the same level from the start, just needs momentum

i did say that back then a zerg could do other things to win games. some pros just didn't transition well into the new expansion that's everything.
To be honest I have less of a problem with the playstyle, than with the fact that a national tournament in a nation, which wasn't that great back then had a first prize bigger than the career earnings of Dayshi, Ensnare, Boxer, Titan, Strelok, Patience, Crank or Coca.

Future cannon rushed and wrote "gl" when he placed his cannons, Artofwar pulled enough drones though and then wrote "u2" as the cannons were about to go down and the probe died. Then another probe came and build a bunch more cannons and pylons and Future wrote "uh oh", not knowing lings were about to pop and shut it down.
Some of the earlier matches may have had a rather ridiculous pros-versus-joes vibe, but this match is vindicating the idea of putting lesser known players on stage. Sure, it may not quite be sOs vs. Soulkey gameplay wise, but it's entertaining and the local rivalry angle and trash talk interviews give it some nice backstory.

I fully agree, this match is so cool. Just don't show plat vs gold or plat vs pro.

I saw the second game, but I heard the first game was the really crazy one.
This series reminded me why I sometimes like watching college basketball more than the NBA. Sure, everyone is objectively less good, but the sloppiness and craziness can be more entertaining than perfect play.

when u observe players they always look like 3 leagues lower. even GSL players look like scrubs sometimes -_-
most ppl don't realize how terrible low gm/high master skill wise.
I still like to imagine myself part of the 0,5% of the best players :D Even if we are terrible in comparaison to pro, this is good for the ego and being top0,X% best is still quite an achievement.

Lol ToD telling Masters people to go to Detroit and win some money. Diamond players to go and have fun. Serious: Is the skill discrepancy between an average Diamond and average Masters on NA that huge?

The real question IMHO is: Why is ToD casting master players winning money at a tournament instead of destroying them in said tournament and winning more money? Don't get me wrong he's a good caster, but he would have had a realistic chance to make top4 or at least top 8 here (Just assuming, that Polt and Bomber are on different sides of the bracket.)

ToD is a progamer before a caster, the guys was in premier league wcs EU last season. He's consider as a top protoss EU ^^. He loses a bit of level when he focus on casting but the guys really good when he trains hard.

Yes, that might be the case. ToD plays EU Premier, I doubt, he would be stuck so low on GM.

Because ladder rank matters to a guy who makes it to Ro16 in WCS eu.
Europe holds! Well done Cube, hope he'll advance a few more rounds before running into a korean at some time. Also that guy now on camera has an awesome mustache.

And yes, there is certainly a lot of room for improvement. Watching BaseTradeTV earlier, there was only one admin handling all the community streams and it was impossible for them to get games to cast or even a reply from him/her. There are no brackets that I can find, so I can't really follow the tournament properly, and even the casters seem unsure what is happening. Not to be completely negative, it's a nice event and I'm having fun, but I think they should devote more manpower to organising it properly.
