Edit: Everything below is still a work in progress, until the sign up link is posted nothing is set in stone*
Blizzard Entertainment & BaseTradeTV are teaming to bring you some arcade action. This will hopefully be a recurring thing where each month we can feature a game from the SC2 Arcade, and create a competitive and fun atmosphere around it. This first ever installment will feature Zealot Hockey! (Credit to Nicolas for the art)
THE SHOW We plan to run & air 3 episodes showcasing the game we're featuring this month, and a 4th episode that is a broadcast of the actual tournament. We'll be talking with the game developers, mod creators, and community hosts as well as trying to bring some of your favourite SC2 streaming personalities to the show.
Nov 13th - Episode 1 Nov 20th - Episode 2 Nov 27th - Episode 3 December 5th - Main Tournament (perfect month & season for some hockey!)
ART CONTEST We also plan to host a fan art contest with this tournament! There will be some cash prizes as well as some Blizzard Swag up for grabs (ever wanted your very own zergling plushy?!) The fan art contest will accept submissions after the first episode airs, and will close as the 3rd episode finishes. We'll pick our top 10 favourite choices and showcase them for you, the community, to vote on! Top 5 will win prizes, so get ready to draw awful pictures of the hosts, epic zealot hockey battles, or just show off your amazing MS Paint skills.
THE MAIN SHOW
Okay, it was kind of a dick move for me to leave this until last, but I was hoping you'd all read the cool stuff we have above. ***HERE ARE THE DETAILS OF THE $3,000 ZEALOT HOCKEY TOURNAMENT***:
$3,000 Prize Split: (Payouts will only be available via paypal) 1st place team - $1,200 2nd place team - $720 3rd&4th place teams - $300 5th-8th placing teams will be allowed to pick any item from the Starcraft 2 Blizzard store (per member!)
Date & Time: Sign up link will be created closer to the deadline, but the tournament will be single elimination bracket on December 5th starting at 10:00 AM PDT.
DA RULEZ:
ROSTERS: It's recommended using 4 players per team (3 skaters, 1 goalie) but we will allow a maximum of 5 man teams (allowing for 1 sub in). Players will only be allowed to compete on one team as well, so no double dipping into 2 different teams. Registration will be handled by the team captain and must be able to account for all players on said team. Once your team has been eliminated, you may not join another team, or have members of your team play for other teams.
MANNERS: in ZH it is customary to pause and unpause, or trash talk, and have fun with things. We don't want to take away from this, but we're going to ask that everyone try to be as respectful as possible. For the pros: Remember, we're trying to introduce many people to the arcade, there's going to be some easy games. Don't be dicks about it. For the noobs: There's going to be folks that are better than you at this, we hope you have a good time, but don't get too upset for losing. Just have fun and keep playing!
FORMAT: Full bracket will feature single elimination, with the only exception being a Bo3 grand final match. For those unfamiliar with Zealot Hockey, there are 3 periods in game, with overtime and a possible shoot out, so each game will already essentially be "Bo3" more or less.
Walk overs will have a 15 minute clock - You may attempt to play matches without a full roster, but if you are unable to compete for 15 minutes the other team may claim a free win.

give a cookie to the guy who speculated very early on that Blizzard would be the partner behind the Zealot Hockey tourney... can't wait to hear some hockey commentary from ZombieGrub.
Will teams be able to have a 5th member? Subs are big in zealot hockey in case anyone gets real life'd.
Chicago is technically the "central" server for Blizzard, according to the Heroes of the Storm servers with alt + ctrl + f.
Wouldn't it be fairest to have all games played on that server? If so, we wouldn't need 5th players for "one-server lineups".
This is a really large prize pool, including the 5th-8th place prizes, for an arcade tournament. I'm going to try to spread the word. I wish I could participate but my personal situation doesn't allow for it at this time. If this is going to be an on going thing with a bit of permanence then I can see great things coming on the Horizon for Starcraft II.
Big ups to Blizzard and BaseTradeTV for doing this, I can't imagine it's a small undertaking. I <3 BaseTradeTV so much! I'll be all over social media trying to get the word out.

I wish Blizzard Techies would check why after the patch for new UI we had a such a good connection for zealot hockey so majority of EU players had perfect latency on NA servers, but after week it was gone. Would be fun if EU guys could participate in their highest potential.

This sounds amazing @BaseTradeTV! The question regarding being able to have an extra man in the squad is prevelant to my team as well. Is it ok to have 5 people on a squad? (Benches are built into Zealot Hockey).

This is awesome! Very exciting stuff and I'm looking forward to getting owned by better players. Good luck to everyone!
Also, anyone who is interested in the Zealot Hockey community should check out the forums on http://www.zealothockey.net/. There are some great threads there on technique and strategy that will help you become more competitive. You can also sign up for Season 6 of our organized league.

HYPE, maybe I'll play this more often now

I agree with the decision to keep players down to 4 per team. Hype!

Great stuff rifkin, I've made it a global topic in our zealot hockey forums (hope you don't mind)
Looking forward to this great event!

i hope the Zealot Hockey creators end up making some cash off of this game. i got my cash ready.

I love this arcade. It certainly deserves to be a featured arcade. And considering how much time so many players put into it in order to improve a prize pool seems appropriate.

I'd love that, too. Right after 3.0 hit, it felt really great playing on NA from EU. A week or so later, it seemed like everything became so much less responsive and delayed

Quick question: Is the 5th team member (substitute) interchangeable with the other 4 team members during the tournament, or is it more like an "emergency reserve" player who, once subbed in to replace someone, cannot be subbed out again?

Just a quick clarification:
We signed up our team as "Fruits" and one of our players names is DarKLinG, but we accidentally signed up his previous name "LinGKinG" instead. Would it be too much to ask for you to change his signup name to DarKLinG? Otherwise, this is just a clarification that they are the same person.
Thanks! <3

Hello everyone, making this clear Zealot Hockey Tournament is still happening but we are cancelling for December 5th. Nation Wars plans to run over this, and after pleading with them it appears they can neither move times nor days. The goal of the major Zealot Hockey tournament is to raise awareness for the arcade, but also reward the awesome ZH community with a big tournament, and sadly with Apollo, Rotti, Funka & Tod being so god damn attractive to watch, we don't can't accomplish that goal.
This being said, after mucking about in the world of the Blizzard legal team, we have managed to reach a new date that is satisfactory to them, as well as not too far off in the future. December 20th at 10:00 AM PST is when we will host the tournament now. I'm super sorry if this means any of the currently participating teams can no longer play, but we did this with the arcade's best interest at heart.
AND HOPEFULLY FOR THE NON PROS IT MEANS MORE TIME TO PRACTICE :D
..Are you sure you want to have it the sunday before christmas? Many many players are going to be out of town or busy..
I think literally any other weekend would be better...
BTTV you're going to lose probably 50%+ of the ZH community participation by moving it to this date... I promise. If you must move it, is their a problem with moving it to December 6th? ZHL is played every sunday, so the community would have no issues adjusting to the 6th. I think you will kill a lot of hype for this tournament by moving it to the Sunday right before Christmas.
On December 02 2015 13:01 Watermellion wrote: ..Are you sure you want to have it the sunday before christmas? Many many players are going to be out of town or busy..
THIS. I think putting it on the 20th is a great way to NOT have as many viewers and participants especially as possible. Literally talked to 6 people so far in specific about new date, 3 can't make it, 2 including myself are 50/50, other 2 can. Way too close to Christmas fam
EDIT: I humbly suggest considering Dec.6th; Dec.12th; and Dec.13 as alternatives.
Also if you want to make it around the 20th or later, just push it back to the 1st of January or something to where people can recover and come home from the holidays...
Can you delete my teams sign up form; it is not allowing me to edit it anymore and I do not think I will be able to come on 20th and even if I can I will prob have to step down from captain and have someone else sign up instead and put me as sub.
...The Sunday before Christmas... is going to push away players with Christmas plans. The 6th of December should be considered, as well as the 13th. Many others (including myself) are unable to attend the 20th. Not a smart reschedule if you are trying to attract casual players to take time off away from their families...
For those suggesting new weekend dates, it's not like we jumped to the end of the month without exploring the other dates.
Nation wars > Nation wars > Homestory Cup
sall good cuz i just realized i could prolly get my dad to play again and destroy everyone, zh is essentially based on wisdom + less teams = more chance to play vs op korea pros team #TheDream Thanks for the clarification BTTV ♥
I don't mean to be disrespectful, I just honestly feel like the tournament would have a much better reception if the date were moved to after Christmas (instead of the week of christmas), even if that means playing in January.
By changing the date to a sunday, you'll lose many european teams. Because of the timeshift, games are often at very late times for us, which means that many ppl cant show up as most of the eu guys are busy on monday with school, job, etc.
like backfich said , I dont like the idea to play on sunday , because the next day we have to wake up for work or going school, for europe , many players won't play even if they are pros .... I still prefer to play the day 5 :x
If the start time stays the same - 10 AM PST then it is 19:00 CET - same time we usually have our eu league matches. It depends on how many teams there will be. If less than 32 teams then it would take 2.5 hours and 3 hours with less than 64 teams (if we manage to make 1 round in half an hour). But I guess it depends also will each quarter finals and semi finals will be streamed. But even with that whole thing would take 5h hours in worst case. And not like all EU teams will be in final match. Only two. So only 8-10 EU people will need to stay up a bit later after their bed time which apparently is 20:00 and all of those 8-10 people will have that dirty e-sport money so they can quit their jobs anyways.

Please post an official rule about servers. Latency is really important in Zealot Hockey and so how servers is decided will have a great effect on which teams win.
In my opinion, the best server rule would be to have the bracket randomly assign a home team for each match during each round (essentially a coin flip). The home team gets to pick the server.
Others have suggested to have all games played on the central server, but since this server is located in Chicago which is 3x closer to the east coast than the west coast, it arbitrarily rewards the players close to this region. It would make more sense to use a "coin flip" type method for picking host, since then every team gets an equal chance to get the advantage of picking a server that is closest to them. Then west coast players and european players also have a fair shot at winning the tournament instead of just the midwest and east players.
Whatever is decided for the server rule, it makes sense to post an official rule here so that there are not disputes about it (as there always will be in competitive gaming). Thanks!
Perhaps reschedule Christmas in light of recent events
Please remove the team Fruits signup for the time being, thank you
As the captain of Fruits I'm asking you to withdraw my team. We will be unable to play with current roster on this new date. I ask again, please rethink this reschedule.
Going to post an official response, then follow it up with my own thoughts (Rifkin): After seeing your distress, and really wanting to make sure the Zealot Hockey community is taken care of, Blizzard has made the official ruling that the date and time will be Saturday December 5th at 10:00 AM PST (Local time: Saturday, Dec 05 6:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)). Server ruling will default to central, however if team captains agree to a coin toss they are allowed. No teams that have signed up have been removed from the roster, if you do not wish to play, or your team is unable to play, just simply do not show up and after 15 minutes a walk over will be awarded to the other team.
My thoughts: I don't love this ruling for many reasons, but most of which is the BaseTrade Arcade project is meant to help highlight good games and bring attention to the arcade. Regardless of Nation Wars broadcasting over the tournament, chances were this was not going to garner incredible viewership, but doing it this way guarantees it won't. In this rare instance of projects we take on, my concern isn't so much about viewership = $$, but more that viewership = folks we can tell about the arcade for the first time, convince to try for free and perhaps fall in love with the game.
At any rate, we'll see you all this Saturday, GL HF :-)

Also this date change angers me since it is so last minute i might not be able to take off work......
Giving us only 3 days notice for a new date seems like a really bad idea.
I'd prefer the 5th, the 20th, or some later date for this tournament(in that order).. but really 2-3 days notice seems really shitty...
Apologies, misread the message I was sent. It's actually Saturday the 5th (editing message to reflect this) I've had no power all day and I'm writing this while casting CSL because I'm trying to play catch specifically due to time sensitivity.
how do i edit the google doc for my team? thanks.
E: The date change being reverted is a very positive thing for attendance imo, thanks dear frnds at Blizzard (now if only you'd give me Overwatch access already...) Looking forward to playing/watching the games this Saturday, should be a blast!!! Rif casting gonna be UNREAL. Gitty up boys.
Many teams were already planning to play on the 5th, so I think reverting to this date was the right call. Thank you
I understand that line of thinking completely Basetrade; however, I offer an alternative way of thinking in order to possibly alleviate any doubt! The display of extremely high-level play versus that of average play is far more entertaining. With the date being reverted back to the 5th, the pro teams will now be able to compete which will display much higher level of play... rather than an average level of play which could possibly turn casuals off. Regardless, the tournament will be hella fun! Thanks and cya then!
This really sucks. I'd take 20th dec over 5th a 100 times simply because of the viewership...
Any rulings if someone disconnects the game? Remake possible? 3v4?
Also any rules on pauses? In ZHL we have a 60-second total pause timer (can pause twice for 30 seconds, etc) and if a team goes over that then the opposing team can just unpause.
when will the sign ups close? im trying to get a team together last minute after the schedule mixups
Im confused, the bracket is out but teams can still sign up? Does that mean all teams signing up now will automatically get into 2nd round or will it be rerolled when signup is complete?
I also was wondering about any disconnect rules we could put into place because dc's are pretty common within ZH and can maybe even be intentionally caused by other players in the game. Since ZH has built in features to make a remake game quickly and easily (options to change the time, period and score of the game to how it was before the dc) i dont see why we cant have a remake or two if player(s) disconnect. Maybe if the problem persists for more than 1 or 2 games then the lagging team will get a loss. in ZHL we can remake just because someone is having some lag issues but i think it would be better for this tournament to remake only in the event of disconnects. seems unfortunate for a team to get a loss because of a dc and having to play without an essential teammate. remaking doesnt take long to do and would give the most fair opportunities for competition without causing the production to slow down much at all.

Brackets are not set, it's just a random list of sign ups. Bracket will be randomized and set at the start time (10:00 AM PST)

We are given an option to have a 5th skater, in case such as these. If someone drops before the game starts, a remake may be applicable.

i didn't even know this shit happened.. i saw the date change for the 20th and had my calendar marked... and then the date changed again? wtf.
The date changes were a bit frustrating and we will see if it had any impact on the popularity of the game / arcade with the bad date. Overall the experience was very smooth with the admin/casters and the few teams from the zh community actually behaved well for a change (now if they could just continue that behavior lol) Despite the multiple last minute changes screwing some people out of the tourney there was still a decent number of teams who entered and the viewer count wasnt too bad. Only advice i can give is if you change a date please leave it changed and avoid the confusion.
Thanks Blizzard , Rifkin , ZombieGrub (Kreygasm) , Olimoley and everyone in the zealot hockey+sc2 community. ♥ also the ProfessorX video from the art contest really hit me in the feels lol. Netflix has ruined my zh experience way too many times T_T
