Insane numbers for an Eredivisie player.. even if he is a future world beater. https://www.goal.com/en/news/barcelona-beat-psg-man-city-to-complete-75m-de-jong-deal/18g52xa5k49xg1kh184tvwi66g Hope he does well! We've seen so many teams get a huge transfer fee out of someone and then proceed to burn it on Andy Carrol or some other questionable investment.

Nobody quite knows what he's saving for, but Ajax is already quite wealthy. The main rumor is that they want to be full owners of the ArenA, but it's running a profit right now and other investors don't want to be bought out. They're also investing in partnerships and youth academies in growth markets like China and the USA. The philosophy isn't to just blow it all on transfers. But we'll see this summer what happens. First they'd better get their shit together, because 4-4 at home against Heerenveen is a bit embarrassing. We'll see tonight in the rematch, I guess.

On Dortmund's side I've got no clue how much of the Dembele money they've actually spent. They keep making these quiet 15-20 million transfers and some of them have turned out very good (some others not so much). Old Liverpool stuff and to some extend Tottenham's Soldado adventure come to mind when you look at the less succesful investents. As far as I've understood, Spurs spent some of that Bale money on the new stadium though, so I guess it could still turn out alright in the longer run.

Vidal/Busquets, Arthur/de Jong/2 cantera guys (Puig, Aleña), and it's good. Gotta let Rakitic, Rafinha, Denis Suarez, Turan (!!!) go. Coutinho probably too, which is sad.

Also being starter in Netherlands national team right now isn't a good feat is it XD Coutinho thing i don't understand at all, crazy how he hasn't made it. No but that means he's getting experience in top level matches, not just in the Dutch League. And at this age, it's very important. Coutinho came to replace Iniesta, which isn't his natural position but he could PROBABLY adapt if he made efforts. Problem is Valverde fields him as one of the front 3. There's Messi in the team, you can't put another player that loves to keep the ball. So Dembélé is better than him for the team. So now you have to decide between benching Dembélé, Arthur, or de Jong if you want to field Coutinho. 3 players that are way younger and better in those positions. Or you bench Coutinho, and that's 120M€ wasted. Better to sell him asap before he loses value. It's sad because the guy is a top player. Barça was just the wrong choice for him; and for Barça it was an impulse buy to not look weak after losing Neymar, and seeing Dembélé injured. Really poor decision making.

Neres was 11m, Tadic 13, wanted to buy Lainez for 12. Sure it's not huge numbers like other clubs but Ajax has been spending quite heavily lately. Overmars has been buying good players too (Neres, Tagliafico, Onana, Tadic) and almost all of them get sold for more.

I also thought Coutinho would just do what Barca wanted a goal scoring midfielder or just push him out on the wings but then they signed Dembele too and then he was forced backwards into the centre. Which is fine but he just hasn't done anything this season in front of goal I wonder who will take him, maybe PSG as i doubt he'll comeback to England in respect of Scouse probably.

Makes sense to sell your best players for mad money when you can get your CL place regardless. They don't get their CL place regardless. Just this year they dropped from having a guaranteed place and a second place in the playoffs to the winner of the league having to compete in the playoffs too. Ajax and PSV generally do okay(ish) in Europe and both have made deep(ish) runs. But the rest of the Dutch teams have done absolutely pathetically for the last 10 years or so, which means the country coefficient is shit. If Ajax makes it through this round of the CL, there's a halfway decent chance of climbing a bit again, and getting the one guaranteed spot back, but the reason Ajax has been playing Europa League for the last 4 years or so is because they have consistently failed in the final match of the CL qualifier; and last year failed in the second-last match, and then also failed pathetically on the EL qualifier (I remember Drone being really super happy, so I didn't mind too much ). Ajax doesn't really *want* to be an academy for richer clubs, but there doesn't really appear to be any way of changing that. National leagues are important, and the Dutch national league is not big enough or interesting enough to get the TV money that bigger countries can get.

The serious part of the season is coming up and he still has no fixed starting team. One day Dembélé plays bad, he gets benched, next day it's Coutinho's turn, ... It's not benefiting anyone. I'm not even talking about poor Malcom that's now contemplating joining the Chinese Super League at the age of 21 x) Dembélé has been playing well most of the season and he has been a starter for months. I don't think he is losing value. He is not playing last matches just because he got injured. I understand that the club must be unhappy about Coutinho. But what can Valverde do? He has played terrible all the season. It is like playing with one less player.
