Not much to this, just wanted to make sure everyone caught what Sundance tweeted earlier, especially since they were getting so much hate for it.
MLGSundance Sundance DiGiovanni Working out the plan 4 releasing Anaheim SC2 replays. @MLGLee and Clap are the guys you want to thank for this. Official word coming soon.
http://twitter.com/#!/MLGSundance
Personally, I'll be making my way over to these guys twitter to make sure they know how much I appreciate this gesture. Since I know these guys deserve our support, I'll be buying a pass now... MLG, please don't do this to me ever again. I am your fan. :p

Yes, thank god Sundance^_^ really good move. Now I can copy down all the great builds from this weekend!!!!

No. In fact, I'm embarrassed that we're all falling for it.
In addition, I propose we examine the amount of business SC2 provides and plot it on a line graph next to the amount of business all other MLG disciplines provide combined, then on another line graph, plot the proportions of the prize pools. I imagine sundance with a troll face going "problem?"
Actually, he probably wouldn't acknowledge it at all... he'd just do this thing with replays again... "HEY, LOOK OVER THERE!!!!"

Good I thought my epic games would be lost forever I wanted to cry for like 3 days straight. I didn't think to email the games I played to myself cause MLG always had a really easy way to download the replays and then I saw they weren't going to be released!!!!! >.< this is the best news I have gotten all day :D
|
Thank god, looks like we can count on MLG to listen to what the community wants and they have come through for us yet again. Will definitely be buying a pass for all future events to support this level of service and excellent customer treatment.

There's always gotta be a nay-sayer in every news bit mentioning nothing but positive things (second thought, probably just a troll). Ah well, great job for re-thinking it, MLG!

I cant shake the feeling that this had something to do with NASL releasing theirs. After all, why would they be so willing to not release replays to all of a sudden being for it? Something really doesn't add up here.

I feel the same way. If you start off by lying straight to my face, getting caught and called out on it, and then trying to fix things by doing what should have been done in the first place? Hell no I'm not going to let that slide easy.

There was no BS. R1CH confirmed that there was a risk after Lee talked to him privately. It was minor, but understandable given how important it is to not let their be problems at the live event, so any possible avoidance is a good idea.

Agreed. And that small chance may not mean anything to me, the average viewer, but it would mean a whole lot if I were a competitor and that exploit was used against me to cause me to lag out. MLG has a responsibility to protect the players and part of that involves planning ahead, eliminating possible problems before they arise.
I was thrilled about it, but I wasn't gonna argue against something I was getting for free and wouldn't affect my viewing experience.
That Sundance and MLG have plans to release the replays, I think, speaks to their continued and outstanding dedication to us, the viewers. I don't think it's getting duped at all.
I see it as:
MLG saw a risk with releasing replays and decided to hold them (we can argue about the actual risk but they saw a risk)
Huge reaction from the community
MLG re-evaluates to try to please the community
I'm not sure what more you want than a business that listens, and they do; they've shown it time and time again.
Thanks MLG.
sidenote: It's also one thing to try to figure this out DURING Anaheim and AFTER.

Part of me wants to insult you... how dare you bite the hand that feeds you?! But, honestly, I'm not sure if we would ever see these replays it it wasn't for the community's outcry to begin with. All in all, I'm thankful that it all turned out okay at the end. As the old adage goes, you never know what you have until you lose it. These replays I'm sure will be even more appreciated than before.

For me it's just as simple as refusing to support MLG by buying passes if they try to lie to their viewers again. I put my money where my mouth is. Will it change anything in the grand scheme of things? Nope. But as a consumer I like to support "esports" when it's done properly. And yes, I had an MLG Anaheim pass. I supported them and thought the event was great. Just didn't appreciate the replay stunt they tried to pull after my money was already spent.

But that's the thing with the internet and the technological explosion. YOU don't need to. I don't need to. A giant team isn't required to do this lower-end stuff, just a kid with some time and a bad personality. So why take the chance? If they had released the replays like last time and their worries had come to fruition, I can guarantee we ALL would have complained about it. So they wanted to avoid that frustration for us AND the players. People can argue on whether or not it was a threat but they perceived it as such and took the steps to keep everyone safe.

Glad to see MLG releasing them, means a lot to a good amount of their viewership

Well to be clear, I personally wouldn't have any problems with an organization NOT releasing replays. I'm pretty used to the Brood War korean scene and the GSL not releasing replays. That's not the issue I have. When the Koreans and the GSL say they don't want to release replays because they don't want to hand out pro player builds... that's PERFECTLY fine with me.
If MLG said they didn't want to release replays for the same reason, or even for money reasons - again that's fine with me as long as they are straight up about it.
I'm not fine with lying about it or with hand waving.

The only foreseeable risk that could come from releasing replays is releasing the names of the caster accounts that users can then brute force to add to friends list.
This risk is non existent because MLG showed the caster account names multiple times on stream.

I think it's much more likely they honestly did intend to withhold the replays at first. The community outcry nudged them back in the right direction.... Then finally, when NASL released their replays, I think that's what pushed them over the edge. No way MLG was going to let NASL try and one-up them like that.

R1CH from here at TL, the one who manages all tech related stuff at TL, confirmed it. If you don't have reason to believe what you're saying, don't say it. You obviously didn't have enough evidence to support your belief since it was already shown to be false.

Gonna need the replays since the VODs (if you can find them) are buggy, out of order, and generally imposssible to navigate. I love MLG, don't get me wrong, but before they up their prize pools I REALLY wish they would spend more than $100 on a website/developer because this has been the most frustrating experience I think I have ever had with a website. Thank God I have TL, if it were just MLG I would have never a) found my voucher code or b) found the VODS (which you can only access with a direct link afaik)
for serious, this website functions like a high school project, they need R1CH soooo bad >.<
|
Already bought my membership and was waiting for this to be announced, MLG proves yet again that they LISTEN, perhaps the most important trait of what is becoming a model for success in e-sports organization. Honestly, the fact that MLG and TL are able to work together, with MLG providing the event/staff/venue and TL providing support in the form of a coverage portal and player lounge, is a sign that there is indeed something wonderfully unique about how the Sc2 community is willing to put aside organizational differences and simply celebrate the game we all love. Keep on impressing, MLG and TL, and I'll keep on supporting.

Where did he confirm it? The only quote I've seen is that he understands their reasoning, but didn't have enough information to confirm/deny it. And having dug through a replay file myself, the only ID information I could find was the public B.Net identifier. Until I see some actual evidence to the contrary or at least a halfway decent explanation, I don't buy it.
However, the reasoning is chat spam ('ddosing') and even if there is some obscure exploit in the replays, a simple script does the same job for you right now very quickly. Not releasing the replays has 0 mitigation value on that problem.
So, even if there is an obscure unintended exploit of some kind, lack of release has 0 effect on mitigation. The problem is B.Net's chat functions, not something hidden in replay files. This isn't even going into things like how all the players have replays already floating around the internet for free download.
|
Thanks for releasing them, I think that after the event once you strip all the "information that can be used to DDoS players" is a good time to release them

as one of the people who were extremely upset and vocal about replays regardless of the reason why they were held back, i'm glad they're being released. i hope that if there was a compromising technical issue, that it's been covered. it's kind of selfish for me to demand replays if it hasn't been, but really, i just want to watch the whole event, which at this point is mostly only viewable through replays. if i had to pay for a membership thing i wouldn't mind it either, i just wanted to watch the whole event. ty MLG for making this decision

This isn't even going into things like how all the players have replays already floating around the internet for free download.

i'd like to thank the community. without community action, this negative change would have stayed in place. a testament to our abilities .

Read that until you understand those 4 words. At best you can accuse them of poor word choice. There is nothing in the replays that facilitates chat spam. At best they were misinformed or someone in their IT group was wrong. They have not admitted to this. It's a big conspiracy. MLG convinced R1CH to lie as well... they took his family hostage obv

Thanks MLG!
And to the nay sayers, you are not entitled to have the replays. They gave them once, it doesn't mean that they have to give them now.
For that, I'm grateful!
|
Thank you very much for making this happen! go replays!
|
Finally, seriously they need to put out the replays. We pay too much ... actually not that much, but anyway we want to be able to see the games if we are too busy to watch them live, thanks!!
|
YES! This just made my day ;D
|
Watch out Zergs, Hellions will soon arrive at your base.

|
Thank you! this is great!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIR!

This is an amazing turn of events that makes me very happy I paid $29.99 for the Gold Membership.
MLG is my favorite tournament, I can now watch all the replays from the local players who went through the open bracket, and from my favorite players who weren't casted at the event.
|
Well i'm so happy about this news, i'll upgrade from silver to gold once they are online.
HUGE thanks to MLG staff who did their best to work this out.
<3
|
|
Awesome, thanks MLG <3 <3
|
Yeah! Amazing news, specially to see that MLG really cares for the fans feedback :D
|
Cool!!! I boycott the whole event because of no replays now I can catch up and check what happened
|
hail MLGLee and Clap /o/ \o\ edit: I thought MLG was being greedy and money grubbing, they have proved me flat out wrong and I'm so happy about it.
|
NICE! Who would have thought that they would change their mind ? :O
|
Seriously can't wait to watch MVP vs DRG, Thanks so much!
|
HELL YES! This is the best news I've heard in a long time
|
Was so disappointed before but part of me knew they'd see sense eventually.
AWESOME NEWS
Appreciate MLGs intentions but the community loves them replays too much to not put up a fight :D
|
i don't get why everyone is thanking mlg i totally understand why they wouldn't want to release them live during the event but the plan should have always been to release them after the event this is them trying to save face
|

|
I can't believe people are griping about them releasing them. GOM doesn't release them at all and no one crucifies GOM. MLG decides they want to send them out and some people are still whining. I seriously can't believe some people. They don't have to release them.
|
I'll just add an "excellent news" there
|
*Gripe for another thread*
|
<3 Awesome. Sooooo many sick build orders from this MLG, replays are really really really appreciated.
|
Will they be the replays with the casters? Or just the games? I wanna re-watch with the casters casting it.

"HEY, LOOK OVER THERE!!!!"
pay no attention to the man behind the curtain folks......
I'm not sure what to make of this. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes. I don't know when they realised that the data contained in relays can be used to jeopardize their tournaments. I don't know when this started occurring and if the decision they made to not release the replays is a result of this.
What I do know is that they are releasing the replays now; and for this we should be thankful.
Big evil company or misunderstood representatives; the release of the replays is a huge service to the sc2 community regardless of ulterior motives.
Thankyou MLG.

Called it! :D
All the same, good to hear

I knew they'll release it :D
Time to study some builds.

I would imagine that those opposed to releasing replays were the Korean players and their teams. Korean players are much more secretive with builds than foreigners tend to be. Koreans stream less frequently and release replays less often. Now that MLG and GSL have a partnership, I think that the GSL will probably try and prevent replays from being released.
Again, this is completely speculation on my part, but I think my reasoning is pretty sound (even if they aren't the actual reasons haha)

If I'm honest i think it's more of a habit from the Kespa days. i don't think it really crosses their mind to stream or release rep packs etc, because it wasn't done in BW. Now players are coming to foreign tourneys and seeing the foreign fans and communities a lot of players are now streaming and I don't think the reps are much of an issue.
But that's just my speculation =]

Thank you for this MLG ^__^

I read through all the comments but didn't see anyone mention if the replays have been released yet, have they been or are they still working on it? Big thanks to MLG though <3

Before you thank them, look at what is posted on their website about this:
http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/mlg/anaheim-replays
MLG will no longer be making replays of Tournament matches available to the public. We realize that this has been a popular feature, but unfortunately replay packs contain data which can be used to DDOS the player- and the event. Because of the volume of replays we have to process during an event, we are unable to strip that information out of the files before publication.
We realize that a large number of matches are played offstream at Pro Circuit Competitions. After MLG Anaheim, we will be sending replay packs out to selected groups of casters, so that these never-before-seen matches can be commentated and then released for everyone to see.
I think the tweet is referring to releasing the replays to a few casters, not the public like in the past.

Right after that tweet he responded to Duckvillelol so this should help explain things daedelus
MLGSundance Sundance DiGiovanni @DUCKVILLELOL When we do the full release it will be broad. Starting with key matches for casting then broader for everyone b
this was the tweet Sundance was responding to
DUCKVILLELOL DUCKVILLELOL @MLGSundance If you get a chance could you have a look at my comment on reddit regarding that? Different viewpoint. http://bit.ly/omfIgt

Every tour out there release replays cept for GSL. And GSLs reason for not releasing them is not the same as MLG.
Its sad that GSL dont release replays sure, but also fun because its way harder to copy the players builds.
MLG released it last time, and they should this time. So why raise MLG to the skies?
Should we do that to every other even like Dreamhack etc for releasing replays which is a given aswell? ;>

Well that's what I figured from seeing that initial announcement, to me that meant that for those of us who didn't catch the game as it aired live, it just meant that we'd have to wait for Husky or something to release youtube videos on it, which would mean a delay but that's alright...We'd have our choice of commentator to watch the videos, just a bit later is all.
But now I guess this means that MLG will simply release the replays so anyone can watch now?

Why would they do that? Releasing replays is putting them at a huge risk. Every tournament that has released replays so far is being totally ruined by people messaging players. Look at IEM running now. They released replays on Day 1 and now its Day 4 and all the players are crying that they are being constantly messaged by abusers. The games are non-stop spiking and being restarted. Admins are running crazy trying to find new accounts for the players for every new game. The event is totally ruined. /sarcasm etc..

WOOOHOOO THANK you sundance

@ jjhchsc2 what's the WOOHOO about ? I still don't see a link to the replays.
Also now with the new patch coming it will be a pain to load all those replays from the previous patch.
