You have finally won a GSL championshiop I am ecstatic that I managed to win in the GSL finals after a year of competing in the league. I’m a little sorry to MVPGenius but I want to meet him far into a prestigious tournament again and play against each other in the future. You won the special LG cinema league last June also in the same stadium That tournament was a special event to be held just before the Super Tournament. Winning it was nice but I was a bit disappointed that it didn’t draw much attention. I was happy to hear that the GSL finals would be held at the same place, and for some reason I thought I would win so actually winning makes me all the happier. Early on in the series, Genius seemed to be taking control I wasn’t able to play at the level that I wanted. I tried hard but my hands weren’t moving like I wanted them to and that really affected my gameplay. I kept calming myself down in my head and as a result, the rest of the series went well
When did you anticipate your victory? Just as the series got to 2:2, I became certain I would win. Other than Set 1, Sets 2,3,4 all had good maps for protoss. After losing Set 1, I thought I could very well lose 0:4 but after getting two sets and tying up the score, I knew I was going to win. Was it difficult to get enough practice going to MLG 2012 Winter Arena? I’m not a player who needs a lot of practice. Thinking up builds and strategies in my head is more important and I had time to do that on the plane so it was not a problem. You are third Zerg champion after Fruitdealer and Nestea. How close do you think you are to Nestea? In terms of career, he’s way ahead. In terms of skill level, I will keep learning from Nestea and keep catching up but I’m still quite behind. However, I will practise with the goal of passing Nestea one day. Are you willing to treat Genius and the other teammates with your prize money? Regarding Genius, leaving the prizes aside, I have no intention of ever treating him since he’s never treated me either. However, if he acts like he knows his place now, I’m willing to reconsider. To the team, first place buys a TV and second place buys a gaming console. We will contribute to the new gaming room at our training house.
With this victory, your prize ranking has gone up and if you happen to win the next season of Code S, you’ll break the 100 million Won mark A progamer’s first priority is to make money. So of course I think about the money. Also, I am delighted with the new design of the trophy. I will continue my best to collect the prize money and trophies. Unlike usual, your ceremonies weren’t so flamboyant despite the series being a teamkill Since it’s the finals, we kind of felt awkward ‘ceremonying’ each other. After winning, I collected myself and pulled one off but it wasn’t satisfactory. I don’t think the fans really enjoyed it either. Lastly, a word to the numerous fans who came to see you play So far, my individual league results haven’t been great. It’s the fans who supported me during these hard times that made this victory possible. Zerg is a hard race but I’ll work even harder from now on to show the best possible matches in the future.

Extra questions from PlayXP (there were more but the ones not included were already asked and answered in the Thisisgame interview)
Weren’t you short on practice time after attending MLG Arena? Zerg isn’t a race that needs a lot of practice other than studying the maps and I was able to study them on the plane so it was fine. I finished my practice two days after coming back to Korea. At MLG, two Korean Zergs lost to Naniwa. If you were to compare Genius with Naniwa? Naniwa does hardcore pushes that come early. Genius doesn’t do that sort of stuff but his mid-late game play is excellent. What will you do with your 50 million Won prize money?
Until I can buy a house, I’m only ever saving up my winnings. You showcased your girlfriend today. Why did you decide to do this at the finals?
As a man, I thought it would be cool to show off his girlfriend after a victory.

sorry about being late with the interview, there's also one on PlayXP that I'll upload soon
edit1: Could a mod add Season 1 to the title just after GSL?
edit2: and also put 2012 in front of GSL? sorry...
edit3: PlayXP questions up but without ones overlapping with Thisisgame (I promise they're exactly the same so you're not missing anything)

Wow! Thanks for the write-up and congrats to DongRaeGu! Excellent Finals!

Interesting. He is either very humble or considers nestea better than him.
Thanks for the translation.

As a viewer it feels like DRG is stronger than Nestea currently (especially following results), so I wonder if DRG is catching up to the shadow of Nestea's dominance around june last year? Or whether he actually looks at Nestea's play currently and still feels like he's coming short despite the more average results?
I'm pretty sure Nestea and DRG practice together as it is (I believe they practice ZvZ with each other since there are few zergs at that level in Korea), so DRG has probably seen a lot of Nestea that we haven't.

Yeah, bear in mind that when they are playing each other it is a ZvZ, which is easily Nestea's strongest matchup. So there could be a bit of cognitive bias there.

Wow you do not fuck around: thank you for the quick interview!
I'm really happy DRG won it, I really hope to see both him and Genius do well in the future. Especially Genius - it's time for a Protoss to take the championship and I want him to be that Protoss.
Go TeamMVP >!

i like the zerg doesn't need alot of practice, but has to know the maps line. Grats to drg, buy a nice tv !

Too bad words on paper don't convey context very well.

Well nestea says he hardly loses in practise plus DRG can only play zvz with nestea so i suppose thats why.
Excited to see what great things DRG will do in the future :D

Picture of his girlfriend? I'm interested what all the fuzz is about.

I think the preview from TL sums it up pretty well; the only people Nestea lost to in this season of Code S are the two players who eventually made the finals in very close series. He said himself that his mind fogs up around the mid game and he gets rather impatient, so he rarely shows what he considers his full potential. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nestea play at levels close to DRG's right now.
That said, though, I do believe DRG's being incredibly humble. He's just playing so well, I can't see another Zerg doing anything better than he has.
Loving the friendship between DRG and Genius, btw. Watching them interact with each other and talk about each other cracks me up. xD

Great interview, DRG's answer to the prize money question was hilarious.
|
Ahahah, the interviews with DRG are always the best.
Too bad Genius didn't win the finals, but I'm fine with DRG winning it all. For how long he's been around since the days of being a ladder god, it took him a long time to get to winning a finals. A well deserved championship.
Now let's see when a Protoss finally wins something since MC last did in March last year, a year void of any Protoss winner.

Genius, KNOW THY PLACE!

this series was fun to watch, but its convinced me that the Phoenix upgrade is not something Protoss is gonna get basically ever in competitive play. Genius opened stargate or double stargate nearly every game, always built a bunch of phoenixes, took each game fairly into the lategame, and at one point even built a fleet beacon to mass carriers, DRG consistently built mutas (though didn't simply mass them), and Genius still never got the upgrade. Now, maybe if the upgrade didn't exist DRG wouldn't have transitioned away from mutas at all, so perhaps the upgrade serves some function as a deterrant, but its definitely not something thats actually gonne get researched.

DRG joins MVP, Polt, Nestea, MC and Jjakji to be GSL champions who won while having a girlfriend.
No confirmation if MMA or FruitDealer were dating someone during their title runs, but wouldn't be surprised.
Get laid = Get GSL title

Let's get some brainstorming in here. We need to make up a plan to get Polt a lovely and caring girlfriend. The poor boy sure needs some care after his ladder practice marathons. And he sure as hell needs some luck in order to get his 2nd trophy.

Polt already has a girlfriend, it's just that the Fionn curse is too strong

So happy for DRG, well deserved win. Of course, Genius would have deserved it as well, but he was pretty clearly not the better player today, he made too many mistakes I feel.

Weren’t you short on practice time after attending MLG Arena?
Zerg isn’t a race that needs a lot of practice other than studying the maps and I was able to study them on the plane so it was fine. I finished my practice two days after coming back to Korea. I wonder how many people are going to interpret this as Zerg being OP instead of Zerg not having timing attacks but needing to just play defensive and react well.

I would interpret it this way. Good zerg players already have really strong core basics due to being forced to deal with all sorts of random shit each game. Tight build orders for a zerg do not require as much preparation time as compared to toss/terran. Very map-dependent race: need to blind-counter certain builds that are map-favored or simply prediction of opponent tech when having incomplete scouting information, and the need to all-in when the map sucks for late game.

nice interview and DRG personality really shines though those images. One question though, who was the bum the handed out the check?

I can't help but dislike DRG a little bit after this interview... Incredibly talented player but can't say I am much of a fan of his attitude or Stephanos.

Why ? The interview was kind when needed, witty while showing off, honest with the readers, and well yeah it trolled Genius but Genius has done it first

Just personal opinion I suppose. Everyone will have their personal hero and players they look up to, after this interview I lost some respect for him. I understand first and foremost they play to win but if you want a following a good personality should go with it.

Your standards of liking someone's personality doesn't dictate the quality of their personality, FYI. His attitude is fine.

You're making yourself look like an idiot. Don't come off so high and mighty if you're gonna randomly throw out an opinion without any supporting facts. Do you not understand that translations like these come off WAY harsher than what they sound in korean? Do you think he could say those things if him and genius weren't CLOSE FRIENDS? They understand each other, and the treating freinds to dinner thing has been a joke going back to his ro32 interview. What you said about playing to win and a good personality make no sense. DRG's personality is lovable and great, and you're twisting his words in order to satisfy some internal urge of yours. Please stop.

Gotta say Genius did not bring his usual A-Game like I expected him to in broadcasted matches. He choked hard in a few of those.

Twisting his words? I never once quoted anything he said in the interview.... I stated my opinion and because you disagree with me you just want to say "you're wrong". There is no argument to be had as my statement was based on personal preference/observation and nothing more.
