How do you feel taking down Nestea to advance to ro4?
I last got into ro4 on the 20th of July last year and it’s a similar time this year so it felt like I could advance once more. I am feeling fantastic.
Were you aware that Metropolis, the map used in Set 1, did not have a neutral supply depot at the bottom of the ramp?
I was. I played against Coca on Metropolis last week and found out then. I checked in VODs of other players and made sure before preparing this strategy.
Your TvZ hasn’t been great since your return.
Honestly though, I’m very confident in the match up. For some reason, I get really nervous in official matches and lose. Even today, I was worried that nerves would get to me but looking at TiG’s winner predictions, I saw that one of the reporters predicted my victory. That article gave me the confidence I needed.
Did you expect a 3:0 victory?
My win rate in practice was excellent. I played 5 games each against practice partners and I usually went 4:1 or 5:0. So I knew that as long as I took the first set, I would go 3:0.
Is Terran okay against Zerg now?
I think we’re over it. In late game, battlecruisers supported by ravens can beat Zerg. The solution has been found.
You seemed to be taking it easy today.
The coach usually buys cheap $5 ‘Cheong Sim Hwan’ (T/N: herbal medicine that calms you down) but today he bought the good stuff. He said he spent more money on purpose to help me. I think that’s why I didn’t get nervous at all during the games.
You are the final Terran in this season.
There have been two times when there was only a single Terran in the ro4 and both times it’s been me. I’m very happy and proud to be the final Terran.
You face Seed in ro4.
I beat him in ro32 already so I will play with confidence. As long as I take Set 1, I should go 3:0.
You have been using strategies centred around the siege tank against Protoss lately
That strategy wasn’t planned. However, my opponent picked Whirldwind which was totally unexpected so I improvised on the spot but it turned out rather well. It was a defeat but I think it can be a great strategy with some refinement nonetheless.
Are you confident about reaching the finals?
Just like how I made it into ro4 similar to last year, I fear I may be eliminated in ro4 once again. However, my return to top form is complete so I will aim for the finals. I will play without caring about the pressure. I think I can do well that way.
Anything to add?
I want to thank Coca who helped with practice as well as BboongBboon, Salmosa and Aria. There were more people who helped with practice but I forgot to bring the list of names with me today. I want to say that I am grateful regardless. Annyeong, who I am very close to, is retiring so I wish him the best of luck.
You took down Naniwa after a close match to advance to ro4. How do you feel?
I watched Naniwa’s games and he seemed deficient in his PvZ so I wasn’t worried. However, since last evening, I started getting a bad feeling so did some extra practice which saved me today.
Many expected a one sided victory for you but it was actually quite close.
My opponent didn’t play as I expected. He played in a style I’ve never encountered before. Additionally, I made numerous mistakes which made it closer than it should have been. Luckily, I adapted as the games went on so I was able to win in the end.
You used hydras in Set 4 only to lose.
I was so ahead that I thought I could make any unit and still win so chose hydras. However, it seems hydras are still the symbol of defeat. From now on, unless it’s a special situation, I will never use hydras.
Set 5 was fierce
After beating back the 4 gate, I felt like I could win no matter what. So I made mass roaches and attacked but Naniwa had more units than expected. I did think for a moment I was going to lose but with the gas I had banked up and with mistakes from Naniwa, I was able to take the game.
You face MC in ro4.
MC is a Protoss who I acknowledge to be the best at PvZ. I’ve beaten him plenty of times in foreign tournaments but at the recent MLG qualifier, I suffered a humiliating defeat. That’s why I wanted to face him once more and it’s great that we get to meet in ro4 of GSL. As much as MC is a Protoss I respect, I won’t drop my guard.
You must want this season more than ever as the finals is held in your home town.
I think I will regret it forever if I don’t make it to the finals. This finals is very meaning to myself but also to my team. That’s why we’re going to go to both GSL and GSTL finals.
Your team is now sponsored by Lotte
It’s a great source of motivation. We had a few foreign sponsors but this is the first time a major Korean corporation has started sponsoring us. This sponsorship has motivated myself and all my teammates.
Who do you think you will face in the finals if you make it?
I think TvZ would be the most fun. So I hope I get to face Byun.
Anything to add?
I want to thank our sponsors Lotte, Razer and our partner MYM. I want to thank my practice partners Finale and Vampire and also the coach who today brought with him the chair I use at the training house. Before the match, my family did a big cheer for me and last but not least, I want to thank my fans and my girlfriend.
In late game, battlecruisers supported by ravens can beat Zerg. The solution has been found.
Byun has spoken! Shame he didnt get any chance to show us!
Yes, BC/ravens are a good counter. The problem is how to survive that transitiion. Still don't have enough games where this has been successful vs the top zergs.
Will be interesting to see Byun vs Symbol (and potential Byun vs DRG) next Monday in OSL. Too bad it will be Bo1. Would love to see how Byun would pull of this transition.
There have been two times when there was only a single Terran in the ro4 and both times it’s been me. I’m very happy and proud to be the final Terran.
Wasn't it Mvp, Squirtle, Parting, Hero last season?
Welp, maths isn't his forte i guess :p oh well, as long as he can play well.
I believe he's right about his previous semifinals though, he had to play losira and nestea vs someone was the other bracket.
MVP transcends other T and should not be counted as Terran. Thus, Byun is right
Next time in GSL: ro32 winners interview with IMMvp
I am very proud to be the last Mvp in the tournament, I've always been the last Mvp and I'm glad I could do it again this season. They should really give me the Mvp award for being the most consistent Mvp.
Well, I'd appreciate that Byun shows us this BC/Raven thing. I don't really doubt about its efficiency, but rather about how to get there without being demolished in the process....

Maybe we'll see vs DRG...
We will see Symbol vs Byun next Monday ( and maybe even DRG). But Bo1s.
So excited to see Byun do well again, he's always had that wacky play style that makes you feel off balance, and before you know it, he ends up winning.

hahah sounds a bit about mkp... except mkp never delivers in the ro16 sob sob
nonetheless, byun fighting!! every time i see him play it reminds me of when he played against zenio using the pimpest ghost play before everyone... truly one of the best tvz i watched. gogo byun!! kill protoss and win gsl!! :D
(which makes me sad cos as an mkp fanboi it means there will be another optimus before him...)

nice to see all 3 races in semifinals, gonna be interesting matchups

Considering what happened to symbol and his hydras vs seed, I totally read this as a pun at first

i thought the same after i wrote it and decided to leave it
lol byun said he won 5-0 4-1 against his practice partner and after said he trained with coca? 5-0 against coca? he is really a boss. Congratz DRG too, but i was expecting one 3-0 3-1 against Naniwa, gj Naniwa.

To be fair he did play somewhat overconfident, didn't look like the GSL champion he is today. That being said, NaNi played amazing today despite everything.

How so? He said Naniwa was better then he expected and did stuff he never seen before. He also said he was messing around to much which was noticeable. What do you want him to do, praise Naniwa the whole interview long?

He isn't overconfident he was playing around. If you see he just likes playing around with Naniwa.
Byun's pretty confident. I don't really think it was wise of him to say what he did about TvZ, since it just means every Zerg balance hero found their champion and will ignore the plight of every Terran that isn't in the GSL Ro4, but whatever. Hope Byun continues to play well.
On July 12 2012 23:28 zanga wrote: DRG seems to have a hard time to admit naniwa was 1 millimeter from beating him.. man up and give him show him some honour already...
DRG also was 1 mm away from taking the series 3:1 after losing the first set to an interesting strat. In game 4, wasting all his minerals+gas for the bunch of mutalisks he didn't even use efficiently at all and using hydras eventually cost him the game he had already won.
He admitted he had some problems and almost suffered a defeat in game 5 - he's not a fanboy, there's no need for him to praise Naniwa all interview long.
Oh god ahahah... I died laughing at that. I hope that was intentional and not something that changed in translation. Nothing against Symbol, its just hilarious. And I don't know how I feel about Byun being so confident that TvZ has been solved. Even if it has been solved, the match up still feels really weirdly paced, and I really hate that the matchup is so focused on the late game.
Also think that MC vs DRG semi finals suck haha. Would have preferreed that as a final. Oh well, I still want DRG to make it to the final, he seems keenly intent on winning. Although the way he dismissed Naniwa as an opponent has me a bit worried. Atleast he says he is being cautious with MC.

If Hack is anyone to go by, aggression via multi-pronged drops seems like a way to go.

I am really curious about those interviews. You see snips of it in the GSL news with koreans sometimes talking even English but we never see the interviews themselves so it feels kinda silly.
I'm rapidly becoming a fan of Byun, he's absolutely amazing, I loved his game vs Genius where he used the tanks, even though he lost, that was a super impressive improvisation. Hopefully we see more of it vs Seed. And his comments on Zerg make me happy, I much prefer it when pros try to find solutions rather than blame David Kim. Raven's are the key, which makes me all giddy inside.

I think most people know Raven is the key, even Beastqt who always complain in TvZ on forum also says that Raven is the key. The problem is how to get to that stage. Massing BC/Raven require a huge infrastructure that cost a lot of gas, and Raven/BC themselves cost 200gas/300gas a piece. You need at least 4 bases fully run for a while to transition to that stage. On maps such as Antiga Shipyard, it's impossible to get 4th base up. Maps like Entombed Valley, Cloud Kingdom let you have 4th base up, but to defend it, you still have to invest your gas to tanks and medivac because they are so wide open that you still have to trade your gas units for time. Only on maps like Metropolis, or maybe Daybreak, Terran can grab the 4th and transition to BCs/Raven.
But of course that does not mean it's a low risk high reward strat. A bunch of Raven and BCs can still be easily destroyed by a fungal if you don't pay attention, just like a bunch of marines. But unlike marines, you don't have to worry about ling/baneling hit, you don't have to split, you don't have to worry about losing vision on high ground, creep tumor and creep spread means almost nothing to you, and by the time you can mass produce raven/BC, you also don't have to worry about macro (200 supplies don't need to look back to build depot, units takes 60,90sec to build so you don't have to constantly watch production, resource are supplied with mules, not scv, so you don't have to worry about defending base, when you got runby, just lift the orbital and done)

You completely forgot where he comes from right ? He was a protoss and then declared that terran was OP and that he could be code GSL level by switching to terran, then succesfully went to ro4 with it. He's a mindcontroled terran, don't be fooled.
Oh god I swear if that starts to become normal/figured out and I start playing vs raven/BC late game ima hate zvt :p.
Surprised to see Byun 3-0 going to have to watch those games. Also surprised to see DRG 3-2 naniwa but sounds like he had game 4 won but decided to lose by going hydras which is a good thing to do when you want to lose .

Lol too true. Or when naniwa says something disrespectful...omg he doesn't really mean it, he's just passionate.
from the very start, losing to the 2 rax he scouted very early, nestea played some pretty awful games. im very glad theres a terran in the semifinals, but nestea certainly didnt look like a tiptop zerg in those 3 games.

I agree, people make everything sound worse then it is. Naniwa did something that DRG hasn't seen before. He threw him off but DRG caught on...Adapted to his play. Naniwa did amazing taking it to the last game 3-2.

Note that Byun said BC and Ravens are viable in the late game. He didn't say it's easy to get there as Terran. Right now, late game isn't the problem with the TvZ matchup. It's early to mid.

Sadly hydra are the worst unit in the zerg arsenal. Tell me what scenario is hydra good against in ZvT and ZvP(only against double stargate) They have degraded from being the iconic unit of zerg in BW to the worst unit in zerg arsenal.
Ultras are good if they are supported well(banes/infestor). Although the A.I pathing for the Ultras still suck and the unit is too big and clunky.

Hydras were used against P quite some, they rip apart gateway units if you have roaches/lings tanking. And I have no idea why DRG is blaming the hydras, his MUTAS did absolutely NOTHING. Those mutas on ohana killed like 6 probes that's it, nothing else, they didn't even delay Naniwa or anything. Hydras were fine, they decently traded against that sentry/stalker/immo force.
Also people just follow trends like mad, if someone comes with some hydra strat and owns with it everybody gonna use it. I still remember some zerg using hydras vs terran which was laughable but surprisingly not so bad, I think it was versus Thorzain in the GSL? not sure.
Don't understimate hydras, they have really sick dps and with how much creep zerg are spewing out on the map I could see them used again.

Hellions were called useless and terrible against everything awhile back to.
Just saying.
Hellions are useful now after 2 years in the terran arsenal is it not?
Hydras after 2 years is still the worst unit in the zerg arsenal.
Just saying.
the problem is that Hydras were useful 2 years ago, but then players got better and now they are worthless exept in some ZvZ's and some very very narrow ZvP timings.
I think we’re over it. In late game, battlecruisers supported by ravens can beat Zerg. The solution has been found.
Interesting comment. For some context, here's what Byun said about Terran a year ago:
- You will be facing another terran in the round of 8? I don’t want to face either of them. One of them is the code A champion, and the other is the Supertournament champion, I don’t want to deal with either of them. I hate terrans.
- Why do you not like facing terrans? Terran is OP.
- But you are terran? That is why I switched races.

I was so ahead that I thought I could make any unit and still win so chose hydras. However, it seems hydras are still the symbol of defeat. From now on, unless it’s a special situation, I will never use hydras.
LOL pretty much this... good thing he won
TBH he said the EXACT thing about ultralisks awhile back. And now they're one of the most used units in that matchup.

Well then.
All we need now is for someone to show us how to consistently and safely reach BC/raven. I hope Byun leads the way. Go Byun!
Watch the GSTL game Sculp vs Symbol (NSHS vs TSL). It's a really good one, and Sculp shows some really good job at dealing with Zerg late game. Even better, he was behind before reaching the late game.

people were complaining banelings cost too much at 25 gas and infestors were massive garbage back in beta where zerg had expected you to let them to 3 base 70 drones for free. after all these buffs to zerg blizz still hasnt realised the problem was the maps back then.

Hellions had a time of dominance that they had to be nerfed. Hydra's are the symbol of defeat.

Sounds similar to Reapers.
reapers speed was nerfed. however hydra is exactly the same as it was.
The coach usually buys cheap $5 ‘Cheong Sim Hwan’ (T/N: herbal medicine that calms you down) but today he bought the good stuff.
It's official, Byun's doing drugs
That's exactly what I thought.
I'm just picturing Byun and the rest of Prime just blazing together, and getting walked in on by the Gom folks. Suddenly, MKP breaks out his signature dance and an impromptu dance party begins. LOL

How so? He said Naniwa was better then he expected and did stuff he never seen before. He also said he was messing around to much which was noticeable. What do you want him to do, praise Naniwa the whole interview long?
He said Naniwa played different, not better, than expected.

Meaning he had a more difficult time with it...
Doesn't mean its better though. It just means he wasn't prepared.

Seriously what do you people want? Him praising Naniwa in the whole interview nonstop? He said Naniwa did something he never seen before and it was harder then he expected.
That basically means "He played gimmicky, else he wouldn't have stood a chance"
Not saying I like/dislike anything, just trying to keep it real for you.
Look at your nationality, it's no surprise you'd interpret that in such a negative way
Just trying to keep it real for you

Didn't I write that I didn't think DongRaeGu hates NaNi? Maybe you should read the entire post before hating on random ppl...

Did you watch the games? Context: Naniwa one of the best players here, but with PvZ supposedly his worst matchup versus DRG, maybe the best player right now. Naniwa surprised those who thought it would be one sided. (and of course it implies that his play was surprisingly good) He had good and surprising strats. He had a good execution but made more mistakes than the best of the best. DRG did not play his best during the series, especially in game 4. The serie was very close for these reasons. And that's what DRG said...
