Nvm, it goes September/August with the Finals on 27th August! I am excited to see the BW "God" Jaedong play, never saw him just know his name:/ Definately going to be interesting. (Don't have a BW background, just a bit playing WC3)
Be final KeSPA player in winner's bracket. Finish 4th overall. Beat CURRENT GSL champion 2-0. Only lose two series 1-2...TO THE TWO FINALISTS Get Code A and Jaedong gets Code S
Obviously Jaedong is wildly more popular, and this is going to make this season the greatest ever, but I feel bad for Roro.
Bison deserves his spot. He has been the best player in Proleague, is OSL (1-0 over MKP), and was the second best placing KeSPA player during WCS Korea.

flash is not as good in sc2 as these guys.
but apart from ace matches JD never did well in PL for sc2. Roro is code S quality for sure though so i definitely think he will make code S this season easily.
On August 30 2012 18:13 Nawe wrote: Is flash that bad when they never award him seeds?
He isn't that bad . I feel they should have given Flash or Stats a seed to have one of each team or give just the 2 code S seeds and see who will make it through the qualifiers .
On August 30 2012 18:13 Weirdkid wrote: Ahh sad for Roro. To be fair though, Jaedong seems to be doing well in SPL.
Jaedong was 10-9 in Proleague for SC2. He was actually pretty average.
Oh yea true. I was thinking 15-13 which was his overall score. Maybe they chose based on ace match performance haha. Jaedong with 6-3 and Rain with 7-3.
This is exciting. The cool part is that when they give the Code S seeds they guarantee at least Code S matches and at least Code A or Up and Down Matches if they lose. hopefully JD can tear some up. Woot!
Yeah I would totally see Flash decline a seed. Mr. Humble himself probably feel that he isn't good enough at all. Just full focus on the OSL as of now and if he gets knocked out he he can bounce back and be supergOsu when the next leagues are starting. I approve this.
I feel like RorO got robbed tho, not because Jaedong is bad or anything but RorO's results are speaking for themselfs. But we all know GOM has to do this and take Jaedong instead because of his massive support. It's just like when they give seeds to people like IdrA so alot of people will tune in.
It's kind of sad but really understandable that jaedong got seeded for code S over roro, in terms of skill at the moment it should have easily been roro but I guess GOM's got to think business wise and jaedong's much better for business than roro. Also surprised no reality there they could have at least put in one terran for this season of code A.

Umm, no, not totally unfair? If they were just doing it on personality they could have invited Flash and Oov to Code S. I'm sure that would give them a lot more attention. They've done it because they think those are the best players. Kespa actually has no incentive to do it based on popularity because they should reserve the more popular players for their own leagues (OSL and SPL). I doubt this has anything to do with popularity.

It is, there is absolutely no reason that jaedong should get a better seed than roro. Roro has the better record in pro league, he posted the much better results in WCS (Jaedong beat sC and genius compared to roro's leenock and seed and came 4th) neither qualified for the OSL. Jaedong is seeded because he's infinitely more popular than roro no other reason.
Jaedong so sick in Code S, hopefully he's up to the task. Hoping to see Flash and Fantasy (after that OSL performance) in there too through the qualifiers.

Come on, these are the first seeds given to Kespa. Those are more for announcement than for rewarding the more deserving players. Ah, if only they had decided this sooner they could have given up and down seeds too. I hope for Jaedong and Sun that they get to play in the groups two weeks from now, since as we all know just two weeks is a lot for allowing KeSPA players to improve.

Jaedong and Sun both have playoffs this week. I can see KeSPA asking if they can make it so they play in two weeks instead of next week.

My sentiments exactly..
I love JD, but RorO has ben the one who's impressed me the most out of the KeSPA players.
Sensible seeding on the whole. Bit sad they didn't give one for a Kespa T though.
Expected Jaedong since he's way too popular not to have, even if his ability isn't really the highest amongst his fellow players.
I did think that Sun might get passed over for Roro due to his crazy schedule, but I guess he's going to be MC levels of busy for the next few months (albeit without all that presidential jet-setting).
Nice to see Shy and Trap getting some recognition for their PL performances.

The two chosen did have amazing results as their team's aces. So that might have played a bit in the decision.
Was expecting Roro to be one of the Code S seeds based on his recent performance. Would like to know if there was any method or reasoning behind their seed selections. Also, not a single Kespa Terran seed.
I will say that constantly using proleague rankings is a bit silly. I'm worrying that the same players will get seeded into GSL, MLG, WCS for months just because of slightly better proleague performance. I think KeSPA could have done something like "performance in last round" instead of overall performance. Or they could have rewarded Roro and Reality for their WCS performance more. (Reality is nowhere to be found in Code A for instance)
I recall reading an analysis for how long it would take to have all the good KeSPA players in the GSL and even if all the KeSPA players were superior to their GSL counter parts it would take way too long. By adding seeds they alleviate the problem so I'm willing to bet they'll seed more players next season also. And of course some KeSPA players will come up through Code A qualifiers.

Honestly guys, i also thought it's going to be By.Sun and Reality/Roro for Code S (shame Reality didn't even get Code A) but it's gonna be better for the GSL that Jaedong got chosen. And i support their choice. Jaedong is multiple times more popular. The GSL often has done seeds by popularity, else why would they have seeded so many foreigners? I doubt only to make it more globally.

Well PL will have 1 slot open too... But right now i can't see GSL and Kespa teams in one team league. (it would upset the balance of each team having the same exposure during regular season of PL)
pretty surprised that Roro didn't make code S. good luck to him and hopefully he will win his way in there in short order. on that note i CAN'T WAIT to see JD play ^^
I rofled at bisu. But you need to add 'got SKT1 into the finals by DT snping an extractor...'
I'd personally like to see Fantasy given a seed. It would mean there's a terran in there, his results in proleague were 6-1 and his practice time must have been lower than the others because he was in the finals of the last BW OSL. Starleague winner, multiple grand finallist, beat Nestea comfortably in the OSL...
But if we're not doing more than one per team, Rain is the obvious SKT1 choice.

So Kespa gives extra points for ace matches? It's an interesting system as it gives a bonus to clutchness and nerves control. Happy to see Jaedong in Code S even if roro would also deserve that place. I'm confident roro is going to go at least to the up and down matches.

It's been posted a few times already, but it's based on Proleague SC2 wins (30 points for regular game, 45 for ACE).

They get the seeds because of the partnership, and it was probably part of the agreement for them competing in this season. As for why Sun got it, it's based on number of wins in proleague, with extra points for ace match wins. I Found the full list on reddit earlier:

I don't think they do, there is not much sense giving out seed since they will compete in Code A this season (thus UnD next). If they can't make it that far it makes no sense seeding them anyway, and they don't have foreigner's excuse, which is "too far, can't enter"

Well, despite fairness, GoM, GSL and Kespa, as businesses, all want more viewers. They still have more "negotiation" in the future so who knows what'll happen.

They use points system for PL SC2 wins and ACE matches. Since JD gets sent for more ACE matches, he had more points. I think they also used this for WCS seeds. Eventhough it might not be 'fair', at least they are consistent and that is all we can ask for. It would be very hard to rank all the players 'fairly' since there is PL, WCS, WCS qualifiers, WCG.
I mean Reality had to go through WCS qualifiers and some got seeded. Not sure how they could assign points. If they don't give Reality points for WCS qualifiers, it would be weird. But if they did, it would be unfair to the seeds since they didn't participate.
But at the end of the day, it is for one season. And if you play well, you can get to Code S from qualifiers (and Code A) and if you aren't good, you will get dropped to Code B.
Roro was the only Zerg in the top 8 for wcs Korea. The other 7 were all protoss. His path wasn't easy either, he beat Hack, leenok, Miya, hero and seed. With the only 2 series he lost to the 2 finalists.

I'm surprised so many want to switch Jaedong with Roro.
Should switch By.Sun with Roro. By.Sun has outperformed Jaedong for sure, but the thing is, By.Sun is already playing OSL. Would be nice to see two guys who have played very well (Jaedong and Roro) but not get the chance to do OSL get this chance.

Bison deserves his spot. He has been the best player in Proleague, is OSL (1-0 over MKP), and was the second best placing KeSPA player during WCS Korea.

It's based off SPL performance, with extra emphasis placed on ace match wins.

Jaedong had a better proleague performance than Roro, it's really not unreasonable that he gets the Code S seed over Roro...

I actualy would've liked Jaedong in Code A. Not because he's not good enough, but because the pressure will be huge. Every Gom pro and his mom will want to take him down (He also still needs to practice bw for the Proleague play-offs). Beïng in Code A is a lot less pressure with having to play less established pro's, and only needing to practice 1 matchup at a time. Anyway, hope he does well.

I wonder if one of them will be in Nani's group. Would it be the first foreigner vs Kespa match? They can't be same group as Mana since all 3 should be in tier 4.
RoRo should have got the Code S seed, and REALITY a Code A seed. They're better than most of the guys listed that are seeded, popularity contest once again.
Also pretty foolish they go off of Proleague results... it's players on the same level playing against each other...
OSL, WCG, WCS should have been taken into count more, it was KESPA vs. GSL aka much harder and more demanding, results mattered way more.

Jaedong looks mechanically brilliant to be quite honest. I'm more upset that the GSL is offering these guys seeds, I'd think that jaedong rising to the top all the way through the qualifiers would be a better story. It seems by offering them a seed GSL is admiting that for the moment, the kespa players that have been given seeds just aren't capable of coming through the qualifiers. I'd be pissed off if I wasn't respected when I had that kind of skill.
I'm so excited for this GSL! We've got kespa players coming in, two foreigners, a ton of previous winners and talented players. This is gonna be a good one
Code A offline qualifiers will be the first time since 2007 that Flash has had to go to one of these tournaments. He's been seeded in every OSL/MSL since then. Qualified for OSL his first try and MSL his second. Not saying he deserves an automatic seed for Code A or Code S, just pointing out the preliminaries are unexplored territory for him.
it's so hard to tell with the kespa players, especially after WCS, I could see jaedong absolute surprising everyone dominating, and securing his code-s seed (don't see him winning it soz) or I could see him being absolutely destroyed by existing code-s players.
I think Jaedong should be able to hold his own if he gets to practise more Starcraft 2 (Is he still practising Brood War?). The guy has amazing willpower and self management, works hard, is talented, practises a lot, and has Cezanne as a coach (Though I never really did follow Cezanne when he was in the scene, though he supposedly has good theoretical knowledge about the game).
imo should have jsut thrown them all into code a and let them work up. the pl results are hardly indicative of code s seed. gom is looking to immediately cash in on viewership with JD in code s. sigh.

Your fan girl count is a little low, for JD anyways. I think Roro will make it to Code S and so do they, which is why the ensured JD got a seed. Seems like they're hedging their bet a bit.
Poor Effort and Roro. While a Code A seed is awesome, they've been been doing better than Sun. Feel his spot should have been given to one of those two guys.

Sun was pretty much a no-brainer choice; while JD is a bit more debatable, you have to remember JD is basically second best, if not the best, PL ace - which is a pretty big deal.
Looking forward to see how they stack up against the players in the GSL, I can still see them struggling though. And why the fuck is RorO not code s...
Definitely props to these players, but I would have liked to see them come up through the qualifiers too. For instance, some of their differentials aren't the best, but because it's PL they get a high volume of games because they're trusted players. So they get more victories that way. But watching Jaedong play the role of ace again has been a treat.

Not really, the system actually is pretty flawed. If you look at the earlier wins you'll see the games were awful, whereas later games have a much higher level of play and mean much more. Plus it doesn't accommodate WCS and such.
It's not terrible, but there definitely are valid complaints with it. Would've been cool if they ran something similar to one of the old GOM tournaments; 64 or 128 players (All of Code S + best Kespa players + Code A/Foreign invite/etc.), would've been cool to watch. I'm probably asking for too much, but you have to admit that would be awesome to see.

Even if they used only round 3 to determine the seeds Rain and Jaedong rank higher than Roro. I had Rain with 4W 2L (3W 1L in ace matches) and Jaedong with 4W 4L (2W 2L in ace matches) for round 3, and Roro got 2W 2L (0W 1L in ace matches).

The system I was speaking of was in reference to NASL. However, KeSPA makes sense if you think about it from the viewpoint of KeSPA... Or any sports organization really. Say I was the coach of a wrestling team. I won't take the results of the last freestyle tournament to decide who will be my starters. I will have them wrestle amongst themselves in a wrestle off and the winners will be the ones to compete. Same here with KeSPA. ProLeague is their "wrestle off" and they are taking those with the best results AMONGST THEMSELVES and sending them out to compete.
Rain seems to me like a solid player to invite. He crushed zerg after zerg in WCS, has had an outstanding performance in Proleague, and beat MarineKing in the OSL.

You have a point... SKT triple protoss tag team plus Fantasy has been there starting roster until this sc2/bw season. And Roro, he's was like the ace of WeMade with Baby
Assuming Hero (P) and Alive (T) advance from Group C plus TheStC (T) and Violet (Z) from group E, that would be total of
10 Protoss 14 Terran 8 Zerg
The bottom line? Bringing in a Protoss and Zerg from Kespa invites was smart in terms of racial distribution for next season of code S. As for the actual players, I still think Roro would have been smarter to invite over JD. A better story would have developed had JD fought his way through Code A or next season Up and Downs to achieve Code S.
All discussion about Jaedong vs Roro aside, I think it's pretty incredible that there's 2 Kespa players and 2 foreigners in Code S. Had anyone told me that last year I would've laughed.
Jaedong winning the GSL might be the best thing that could happen for SC2 in Korea. The current base of eSF / Gom pros aren't appealing enough to holdout BW fans so having a giant (or Tyrant) from BW winning a major SC2 tournament would definetly help bring over more fans.
grats to the players who received seed although I feel like the point system is really weird considering some players are like 10-9 or something whereas others who didnt get seeds were like 8-3

I'm glad that GOM gave out seeds to Kespa players. Will surely attract a lot of attention to this GSL season and will allow us to see how Kespa players do in GSL. Can't wait and hope Jaedong makes it far.

As much as I love Bisu (he's my favorite player), he kinda dried up in BW, and I don't expect different in SC2. I would really really love for him to be top Protoss again, but I don't see it happening sadly .

Bison deserves his spot. He has been the best player in Proleague, is OSL (1-0 over MKP), and was the second best placing KeSPA player during WCS Korea.
Yes, agreed. The point system GOM's using seemed designed with an end in mind
I freakin hate seeds into code A and S. It's unfair against alot of code B players that have been fighting over and over in the qualifiers without making it into the GSL.

Maybe, but KeSPA has traditionally counted only wins in KeSPA-official games (and KeSPA rank for Proleague is X points for a win, 1.5*X points for an ace match win.)
So they've been completely consistent with what they've done before... basically, they just computed people's SC2 KeSPA rank.

It is smart even if they weren't consistent to find a way to put JD in Code S. If one looks at the views for a JD match from WCS compared to anyone else he brings about 9x the views of a VOD.

There is a reason why they're still in Code B. And all of the current seeds are definitely better than the code B players. Now, in the past when seeding foreigners except maybe Naniwa these seeds have been a waste.

Roro won't even need a full season to reach Code S. People are going to drop out of Code S just because they fear if they make him play a full season of Code A he will beat them so bad they'll forget how to play the game.

I don't really think that providing the opportunity has ever been a waste. Hell, Naniwa was originally given a Code A seed, and then another, and maybe a third? I forget but I remember he went 0-10 in GSL before getting his code S seed and going on a major hotstreak. Same with HuK, while 3 foriegners got owned when they gave out that batch of Code A seeds HuK persevered and eventually made it to code S. Same with Thorzain, he won a few games in code S, a few games in Code A, and would have been in the up downs if he wasn't sick. Same with MaNa who just made it through to Code S. Even if many, many foreigners had to take some brutal losses to get to where we are now it's worth it for these stories. The better players win and the worse players lose and eventually the deserving few make it as we've seen with the above examples.

Also foreigners in GSL make it more interesting. I know for a fact that I'm not alone on this one when I say that the most exciting times I have ever had while watching GSL were probably Liquid`Jinro's two Ro4 runs and when Liquid`HuK was in GSL (that being said, I guess those players both qualified for GSL). I stayed up for every single one of those matches and never regretted a second of it.

Yes, half of Code S are terrans (only look at this year Season 1 - 15, Season 2 - 15, Season 3 - 13, Season 4 - 12 (4 can join via Up and Down matches). In absolutely all GSL seasons the number of terrans is the highest.
On August 31 2012 08:01 Ghighita wrote: I'm new on this Gsl.Can someone tell me how works this code a qualifiers?
Code A qualifiers simply take whatever spots are available. The Code A seeds have been notably inconsistent in numbers with sometimes 4, 2, 1 or 0 in some seasons. It simply means for the qualifiers there will be less groups.

Yep pretty much what this guys said. Here is a perfect example...prepare to be awed! PS: Have a spare change of underwear nearby ...
If KeSPA did not start the drama about not attending GSL Season 4, we would have: 2 seeds straight to Code S, 2 seeds to Up and Downs, and 4 seeds to Code A (it was said here No Kespa Players in Upcoming GSL).
On August 31 2012 13:07 Proseat wrote: Nice! Wonder how many other KeSPA players will take part (and qualify) in the Code A preliminaries.
It is likely that we will see a lot of Kespa players. Considering most tried to qualify at WCS, WCG qualifiers. And like many players had said, it is good for them to get more experience playing competitive matches.
On August 31 2012 13:39 Dontkillme wrote: How did Jaedong and Rain just suddenly get Code S seed?
Did you read the OP?
If you did and are asking instead about the seeds in general: Basically GSL always give out two seeds of Code S to players who have performed well elsehwere. Previously these have typically been used for foreign seeds and for players who have done well in international tournaments. Last season included Thorzain and Violet. Season 1 was Idra and Sen. I forget Season 2 =/ Polt and someone?
Anyway, to increase hype, Kespa are getting the seeds this time. Specifically players who are doing well in their tournaments. Most foreign tournaments lately have been won by Code S players anyway. If Kespa weren't invited I expect GSL would want Stephano and Nerchio though I don't think either are interested in GSL specifically given travel + commitment.
EDIT: Oh duh. Naniwa got Season 2 seed. I was thinking that couldn't have been right because in my mind seeded players typically don't do so well in their first appearance and thought he'd been there much earlier. Guess I made up more GSLs in my head for this year.

Uh... that's what I said...? KeSPA used their own system to select their seeds...?
I think this point system is somewhat flawed because it doesn't count the loses. For example someone with a 6-1 record doesn't stand a chance while someone with a 10-10 is more likely to get into seedings. They need to incorporate some losses in the point system they are using.
I love JD and all, he's my favorite SCBW player etc, but...
This seeding system is utterly ridiculous. Losses have no negative impact at all? A person with a 6-0 score scores less points than a 7-15 player? This makes no sense at all, how can they do this?
Also Fantasy skillwise is way up there and his PL record is incredible as well, I also hate him by the way.

Yeah, one of the silly things about the seeding system is that it rewards whoever is most often picked as ace, so it's logical that the aces of the top five teams that got to the play-offs were selected. Give flash another year and he will dominate this game.
Jaedong already probably has the best creep spread and possibly injects (although that's a little more difficult to tell) in SC2, although his late game still needs work if he wants to be the best in the world. He and the other KESPA pros are going to show everyone how good you can get at SC2 if you practice 13 hours a day and are very talented. I feel like there's little chance the KESPA pros, on the whole, won't achieve a higher level than the current crop of GOM pros given that the KESPA guys are, I understand, more or less required to practice like madmen, whereas SC2 Korean teams are a bit more relaxed. Unless you burn out or injure yourself, more practice is almost always better than less practice.
I think it's impossible for anyone to dominate sc2, and be very surprised if a player stayed on top for 2 years like flash did. The "best player" door seems to revolve every month with each new result. That will lessen once foreign events are more marginalized, though.

yeah it's kind of funny
i can summarise sc2's history like this:
fruitdealer, OMG BOXER AND NADA, MC, nestea, mvp #1, mvp's lost it, mvp #1 again, mvp looks weak, mvp wins gsl again, mvp has an injury, he's done this time, mvp wins gsl again
at some point in time MKP, MVP, FD, Nestea, DRG, MC, Stephano, MMA and leenock have been bonjwas or near-bonjwas according to TL's community

I think it'll be more of a situation where the KeSPA pros will push the overall level, and the overall level of SC2 will impove. But I don't think the top will be exclusively dominated by the KeSPA teams.
It'll be interesting to see it play out though. :-)

so you're saying a player that trains 10-12 hours in an incredibly efficient way won't have an advantage over somebody that is physically required (work, personal stuff) to train less than that?
if kespa won't dominate, i'll most likely stop watching sc2 - which i just started. why? because the game then doesn't seem to reward practice. it's not only about the broodwar stars... it's about the fact that there is now a few exceptional people that really go to the physical maximum of training a computer game and push it to its limits... there is no way kespa should be stopped

Your argument is quite weak to be honest. If they don't dominate, it's because they aren't gods at sc2, and to be honest, people who practice a lot and have talent and are solid enough to don't have up's and down's, will dominate. Noone can argue that.

10-12 hours is not that special for many good SC2 players outside KeSPA. Some players went up to 15 hours/day (Jinro/Major), however this was not long term succesful. Naniwa mentioned that after 10 or 12 hours your decision making becomes weaker.

The KeSPA players do that as a routine, though. It's not about just throwing hours. They have an entire system that foreign teams (and other Korean teams) simply don't have.

I also remember an old interview where Jaedong was doing some absurd number of hours(16-18) in preparation for a finals.
