Today, the players of the No Tidehunter DotA 2 team, along with independent StarCraft 2 player Johan "NaNiwa" Lucchesi, are pleased to announce the creation of Alliance: a new professional gaming team. Formed in collaboration with Razer, one of the world's pioneering supporters of eSports, Alliance will focus on both DotA 2 and SC2, and look to gradually expand its StarCraft roster over the course of 2013.
"Being involved in the creation of a brand new professional gaming team of this caliber is a very special opportunity and we're honored to have been a part of the creation process," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director. "By supporting and helping to drive the unique opportunities Alliance provides for professional players, we hope to continue to deliver the absolute best of eSports to both a Scandinavian and worldwide audience."
"We are extremely happy to be a part of the birth of Alliance. We are proud to be a part of something new. We strive for perfection, and with the support from our sponsor, Razer, this will be a great organization." said Jonathan "Loda" Berg.
Johan "NaNiwa" Lucchesi commented, "A few months ago I was searching for a team that could help me become the best player I could possibly be. It stood between a few teams and I'm 100% sure, since I've been with this team for a while, that I have made the right choice. Not only are they trying their best to fulfill my wishes, but are very professional while doing so. I am very happy to be a part of this team.”
No Tidehunter and NaNiwa will be sporting the shiny, new Alliance tag effective immediately, and have been using Razer mice, keyboards, and mousepads for quite some time now. Be sure to follow the Alliance DotA 2 team at the upcoming RaidCall EMS ONE Finals, held in Katowice on April 20th & 21st, and to follow NaNi at the upcoming DreamHack Open event, held in Stockholm on April 26th & 27th!
Evidence points to this being a new EG team or affiliated to EG in some way.
Always cool to see people from other games expanding into SC2 instead of the other way. Congrats to them both and I hope to see NaNiwa doing well in WCS!
Dammit. I was just double checking to see if anyone else had posted this, rather than just making a thread, and you go and snipe the heck out of me during my second search.
Is there a web page error on the site, or is it just my browser? I had to "view source" to see that, nothing was popping up like it should.
Wow. That's quite something. Starting with a very solid set of talent in both games, hope that the team can get enough sponsor money to keep the skill level that high.

interesting, this is pretty much confirmed as EG.EU
intereesting... so this basically means that Naniwa joined EG? lol
There's has been rumours that EG were sponsoring/merging with No Tidehunter (best wait for the official statement) but my guess would be no and it'll become a tag just like EG-TL are in the pro-league.
Same Google Analytics tracking ID as myeg.net as well. That tracking ID seems to also exist on many websites that are completely unrelated to esports if you look it up, one of those belongs to a company offering web design services so I'm guessing that's who built the site.

All but Polt are Protoss, time for him to change races.
Secretly creating another team to house a great SC2 player that your current team doesn't get along with certainly would be genius, and kind of evil too...

I am 99% sure they aren't dropping the current squad. Seems like EG is setting up strong teams in NA, KR and EU

The internet owns.

It's not like their not trying to hide it discredits the internet's ownage -_-?
well it's not ownage as much as small achievement if it wans't hard -_-?
Well my comment was simply that the internet owns and I didn't give a specific reason so whether or not this particular example of its achievement is ownage or not is irrelevant -_-?

uhh....
EG doesn't have two squads. It's against their philosophy, at least it was when they were under Scoots. It means that EG's current Dota2 squad isn't going to be replaced.

CoCa and Puzzle are still available as far I know -_-?
Huh, not exactly what I was expecting for either NTH or Nani, but seems pretty cool nonetheless. It'll be interesting to see exactly how the branding works for Alliance vs EG, and also whether or not they add more SC2 players to the squad soon.
Hmm... If this is really EG in disguise, I wonder what they were trying to do separating their own brand like this. EG is usually adept at marketing, so I assume there's a reason, but I just don't see it -_-

Just a bit of viral marketing with a fun announcement. They aren't gonna be separate.

He can't this round at least, if he were a part of EG they would have planned the announcement in time to get him in on the roster, especially considering the teams been up for a while already just preparing to announce, as Naniwa says. This clearly isn't related to EG. And like someone said earlier, destiny also uses the domain and stuff for a website, its just a coincidence.

If it is a new team owned by EG / Alex Garfield, it might be no different than Toyota owning Lexus and Scion. Independent brand recognition for varying product offerings, or something along those lines.
As naniwa said on twitter "thanks to @AllianceGG for this awesome opportunity ! already been in the team for 3 months behind the scenes. hope it will be alot longer ," so hes obviously not part of EG. He would have been entered in proleague roster if there was an affiliation.

Don't be so naive. NTH have been rumored to join EG for months. Same with Naniwa. Naniwa was seen in the EG house in Korea. Loda has been pimping out Razer, astro and monster. EG has been looking for EU writers. Site is .gg like EG. Site is similar to EG graphics. Site has same IP.
This is EG having some fun with their announcement.

It's just viral marketing. DId you not see those eg videos they made before with clues people had to decipher for their announcements? This is the same thing in website form. Look at how much people are already talking about it. Are they eg or not eg? Affiliaton? Spinoff, etc? They won't keep alliance name and will eventually be revealed as EG. That's how viral marketing works. Gets people talking.

Oh god please don't be so naive.
NTH has been sponsored by EG since Dreamhack of last year.
I'll be so pissed if it's EG. I just created a Liquipedia page for The Alliance lol. Though that would explain the crappy logo and team name.
Razer have released the press release on their website as well.
It's probably counter-productive for EG lol, they even created Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook accounts for it - any new likes by starry-eyed fans will go there lol, instead of the EG page.
Yea this is most probably EG management running the team but doesn't mean that it can't be a new team.
Toyota and Lexus for example.
With new team, they can attract more and different sponsors. If in the future 2 competing company at the same field ( say Pizza Hut and Papa John) want to sponsor an e-sports team and come to Alex Garfield? No biggie. One sponsors EG, the other sponsors Alliance.
It might be better for the sponsor anyway since EG management is so much better than other companies at exposure and marketing Better than sponsoring some team with lousy marketing who will not gain the sponsors any ROI.
NaNiWa, sickest player in both EU and NA atm, so good its embarassing how good he is. The team alliance or EG or whatever it is, they sure did a much better job bringing this super player along instead of noob stephano that whines about quiting every week, or huk that loses every first match in every major tournament. Naniwa is as big as Jae dong. And most fun to watch in streams or tournaments. Alliance or EG...you who brought this superman to your team, big contratz to you!!
Finally the tournaments will be filled up with 1 sick slot again, Naniwa. I mean there is so much progamers that isnt fun to follow, this guy for sure is, Naniwa, the evil looner genius, just like me

Not necessarily. He wouldn't be able to play till the next round anyway.
Happy Naniwa has a new team, this news is heavily overshadowed by all the CJ face going on though which brings far more glee and amusement to me. I kinda want a little flag with -_- on it now.

Not necessarily.
Why not necessarily?
Well, since he obviously had to keep this a secret. What would the logic be for him to play for EG in proleague?
Also from the looks of it, EG is trying to create a new brand. Since the "Alliance" is a separate team, he wouldn't be able to play for EG-TL anyways.
Interesting "Alliance". With HotS being kinda 'new' its maybe easier to create/form a new team. CoCa and Polt are still kinda teamless, but Polt has his own Sponsor with CMStorm. I think some other good korean Sc2 players are still teamless too.
Awww I was really hoping for a Kespa team. Oh well, I knew it was a longshot. Hopefully the team will get some more pickups soon, right now it doesn't really draw too much interest from me.
I think this is perfect for naniwa. He doesn't play well with others, so I think this will be the best environment and we can see some more amazing play.
This is actually nothing that weird to be honest. "The Alliance" is heavily sponsored by Razer and run by the EG Management.
From a branding and player perspective this is really smart. NTH and NaNiwa are Swedish and it's nothing wrong with an entrepreneur/owner to own two different brands. Think of it like car brands. You have Volkswagen Group which owns a lot of brands. Skoda is the EG here and The Alliance is Bentley.
From a marketing point of view as well as for the players it's fantastic for NaNiwa to be on a team with other Swedish superstars (No Tidehunter) with a little bit of different approach and focus.
if this ISNT EG, then they did a mistake, they let noob stephano join with total fail after he joined, Huk is a joke now days, always first game lose, did you all see the EG-TL vs woongjin? Huk got owned with like 70 suply in the first fight at 10min mark, he is SOOOOO BAD now, he just cant addept, playing his colossus, stalker sentry zealot bullshit, it doesnt work anymore. But if EG took Naniwa into their team, they for sure would start winning again, since Naniwa wins with or without teams, he is the best foreigner no doubt about that. Best EU NA player, and one of the best KR players when naniwa played there. He for sure is suited for anyteam there is, and ESPECIALLY EG since they suck so bad now, all their players suck, even thorzain
I'm confused, how exactly has Naniwa's real situation changed? He still doesn't have any SC-playing teammates. He's playing for a team in name only. It could of course be an EG partnership thing like many of you have speculated, but in terms of the stuff that's actually in the announcement, I don't see what he has to cheer for.

Dude, he is allready playing and practising with EG-TL players, and seriously, you dont need a team to practise with, its enough to log on KR server. And since Naniwa owns in his last tournaments, he for sure doesnt need a jae dong, flash etc to practice with, he is that good allready.

Not having a team to practice with is the reason he fell off the radar in 2012. He went from RO8 in GSL to finishing last in his group and then immediately getting axed out of RO48.
We know he has been visiting the EG house, but we don't know how much time he spends there. And logging on to KR ladder is absolutely not enough, there is a reason Korean teams are minimizing their ladder time in favor of in-house practice.

I could make this into a "Naniwa can only be on a team by himself" joke, but meh. Good luck dude. Hopefully this will be the kick in the ass to get some great stuff going, and maybe get a better attitude along with it. The best of luck!
Oh, and good guy Razer at it again. Proud I bought my Deathadder back when I had the money to.
So I guess when you already have a Dota2 team and SC2 players that possibly clash with someone you want to hire, you simply create a new "mysterious" subsidiary organization to house them. Oh EG... xD

NTH one of the best western Dota teams and Nani, one of the best western SC2 players: now that's a hell of a combo to start with. Razer also seem to be one of the most involved sponsors in the e-sports scene so it's really reassuring to know they're providing a better environment to those players.
Wishing you all the best and looking forward to some great result from The Alliance

how can someone be so stupid, please explain
so where does nani stay in korea? i assume egtl house?
I think he's returning to EU because of this tweet:
"I hope I have enough time in korea to fix my playstyle versus zerg ..." Implies that he will only be in Korea for a certain amount of time before returning to Europe. Could also imply that he wants it fixed before the first offline WCS event he has to go to (in Europe) and that he'll return to Korea after that.
EDIT: Oh sorry, thought you meant whether if he would stay in Korea or not. WHERE in Korea... I guess EG-TL house makes sense. Hopefully he'll be able to stream!

Well, Naniwa beat flash last meeting with 2-1, and the meeting before that he lost 1-2, Naniwa REALLY is that good, and he will show that ONCE AGAIN to all haters that he is very very good no mather who he practice with. There is always these nonbelievers and haters everywhere. Many players become better with sick practice partners, and for example hole EG house got worse when they got stephano and jae dong, so NO, everyone isnt an idiot that doesnt want great practice partners, some of them is allready that good, just like Naniwa. But yeah he will show it to you all april 26-27th during dreamhack.
Why is everyone complaining about the name? Alliance is a significant improvement over Evil Geniuses. Also, by being the only player on the team, Naniwa can't piss off anybody. Brilliant.

Lmao post especially "And since Naniwa owns in his last tournaments, he for sure doesnt need a jae dong, flash etc to practice with, he is that good allready" for sure going 30-0 against some medicore eu players from sweden only, makes you gosu.... not.Dont get me wrg im not saying hes weak/noob etc but hes nowhere near Flash level atm and Naniwa himself would say same proly.
Ty dude you made my day with your posts(untill i saw Life win with SH in GSTL that is ).I wont argue with you more couse you seems to "know better" , ill just clarify i never did "hate" on Naniwa i merly said he aint on Flash level atm, its hardly hateing, i still consider him top 5 foreigner and wish him luck in his homecountry tournament, he will need lot of it.

I would'nt be surprised if Tod joins Alliance as well. He said recently (on millenium tv) that his new team is European and that it will be funny. He said too that it's funny for him aswell.
I don't know what he was speaking about, maybe joining an EG project or being Naniwa's team mate...

It's gonna be interesting to see how the alliance is connected to EG, if it's just EG.eu or if there's another kind of deal going on where it's like a separate team within the organisaion. Glad to see both nth and naniwa in what looks to be a great team though

Yeah that made me laugh. Sorry anyone who doesn't think they need a jaedong/flash/etc high level practice partners would be an idiot lol.
you don't need high level practice partners, you only need coach park
Wow EG seemingly going so far just to get their hands on Naniwa + NTH. To be fair to them I doubt ("Strictly Swedish only!")Loda or ("somewhat outspoken against EG")Naniwa would be inclined to join the official EG team. Even so its a bit strange.
With the new info it makes so much sense. EG couldn't recruit Naniwa to his team because of the hate from HuK. So they create a shadow team that they fuel with money, Razer says hell lets get a Dota2 team as well and POOF. The Alliance is born.
Inb4 we will see Naniwa in PL fighting under Coach Park and his minions.

That would be interesting, and probable if they keep players in the EU areas (Ukraine). I remember watching Dima's stream and him getting into it with whom he thought was Nani, but wasn't certain as it was a barcode name. Anyways, best of luck to this team. If they do have EG ties then they should be around for a while, right?
Naninwa: While I am very grateful for the opportunity provided to me by The Alliance team, I feel a different environment is needed to take my game to the next level. In the coming days I will announce my new team.
I'm giving him 5 months before he decides to leave this "alliance."
I'm not trying to be an ass either. I would bet someone $100 he will leave this supposed "alliance" within 5 months. And then he'll hopefully disappear forever from the SC2 scene. Him and IdrA should form an alliance, and they can invite Catz and TT1 and they can be the QQ Crew. They'll never win tournaments because they'll always be complaining about having to play koreans, or that something is over powered, or act like children.

Trollboy is mad? And don't worry, you're not trying but you are being an ass. Naniwa is still one of the most accomplished "foreigners" on the SC2 scene, and he probably still has the capacity to bring very good results (though I'm only guessing here).

lol, not surprising at all, since NTH said that they had a sponsor it was well rumored and well known around the scene that it was EG who was their "secret" sponsor, this seems to hold true.
I'm pretty sure this is the greatest marketing scheme by EG ever. Think about it. How much traffic do you think they are getting on their site from everyone checking to see if the two are related. In a couple of days, everything will be revealed.

EG money laundering obviously. Next, they team up with Azubu ^^

Yeah, I'm really interested in what kind of players they'll pick up. "More Europe" might imply they'll keep their Swedish/EU player angle for sc2 as well. How long is Thorzain's contract with EG?

I don't think Thorzain would leave anywhere. I think he feels pretty home in EG and overall the BEST option he could have. But as stated earlier, there are players like ToD, Dimaga to name a few. Of course, if they are willing to get someone outside of Sweden.

If so, i feel like having a team name that is more popular for the Dota scene isn't really that fitting for SC2 players, or other games for that matter. Not that i wouldn't mind, but how many knows what Tidehunter is in StarCraft scene.
On April 13 2013 00:17 TheFish7 wrote: I don't follow Dota and I'm wondering why the name "No Tidehunter", its like naming yourself "No Banelings" or something?
Pretty much yes. Tidehunter is a hero in Dota. But it seems they are changing their name now.
They had that name when tidehunter was very commonly picked hero (and I think often banned), sort of like magnus right now (although slightly different role in team). However, they have picked it themselves and no one even plays that hero anymore so their name has become irrelevant.
Glad that Naniwa is back on a team even if it is related to EG in some way it still seems separate so I can't wait to see what the Alliance can do over 2013!
1. Congratz for finding a team u like 2. Why the different teamname when it is basicly EG. I dont see the worth setting another brand when u allready got EG

I wonder if EG/TL are directly financing this project, because naniwa seems like a poor investment for both teams. It would make more sense if it's just a new project of (some of) their management without direct support.

Yeah I know it's very unlikely with Thorzain, it's just me loving the idea to see the best two swedes on a team, especially with their history. I can already imagine the team interviews in my head.

My point exactly. EG, more than any other NA team I can think of, is out to make money. If they felt like adding these players would be a smart business move, they would do it. Frankly I don't think they care about who or what their current players don't like. At then end of the day it isn't the players who make the decisions about who joins/what sponsers they sign with.

It's about viral marketing where EG doesn't explicitly say alliance is theirs, but leave obvious clues for people to find, so people spend all day talking about whether alliance is EG or not. It's a smashing success if I do say so myself.

Yeah. Idra used to hate HuK, EG used to hate razer. Fact is, they do/say and put up with whatever keeps the money flowing. Not saying that's a bad thing, as it makes sense. Just saying that EG wouldn't let something like Idra hating yet another person in the pro scene get in the way of a good idea.

Exactly, and conversely, the players can complain as much as they want/threaten to leave. But they would have to be complete idiots to willingly leave that team in their position. Huk presumably is still making a ton of money over their as well as Idra.

Most people want to get 1st place. Naniwa wants to be the best. ^_^ Honestly though, I think Naniwa is in between wanting to be the very best and trying to get good results. He's obviously going to attend WCS EU instead of trying to work his way up through WCS KR (for the prestige of WCS KR). But, the WCS Grand Finals are supposed to represent the "VERY BEST" players, even more so than WCS KR, right?

Most people want to get 1st place. Naniwa wants to be the best. ^_^ Honestly though, I think Naniwa is in between wanting to be the very best and trying to get good results. He's obviously going to attend WCS EU instead of trying to work his way up through WCS KR (for the prestige of WCS KR). But, the WCS Grand Finals are supposed to represent the "VERY BEST" players, even more so than WCS KR, right?
No, the very best will always be GSL. Blizzard knows it and this championship is meant to give equal chances to every scene.

Because he works super hard and is actually harder on himself when he loses than the critics could be. He actually wants to beat koreans, he doesn't fear them.
So like 90% of the population? Am I in the minority that doesn't care what country someone is from, but is just gonna do everything they can in their power to just win the game? WCS basically cut out a massive chunk the GSL talent to the point where I would say WCS grand finals might just have the very best because it will be all GSL talent so itll be a mini code S.

More like a, massive Code-S that was made available for everyone to compete in. They mimicked the GSL format, making everyone feel like they're playing GSL!

If you don't understand the idea of rooting for similarity, I don't know what to say. Try to convince people watching the Olympics that they shouldn't be cheering for their country or rooting against the country that tends to win an event. Look at the NBA, NFL, everything. Rooting for the team corresponding to your region is so common that it blows my mind when people act confused.
Mohdoo, the funny thing about NBA/NFL/etc. is that all of the players from those teams are actually from OUT OF THE STATE they are playing for. It's such a silly concept. But, people don't seem to mind that all of the players they are rooting for on "their team" are not actually related in any way to "their town". That's what blows my mind!
While the Olympics is cool to see how good different countries perform, I always want the better player to win, which happens a lot in races and whatnot, but does not always in team sports. Looking at Chess... Let's say there is a Russian versus a Norwegian. Pretending I'm from Russia... would I want Magnus Carlsen (NOR) to win because he's obviously a better player or would I want Aleksey Dreev (RUS) to win? I'd probably root for Aleksey, but I also wouldn't be upset if he lost because I know Magnus is better. (But SC2 often fails to reflect skill and so it is quite often that a less talented player beats a more talented player)
I root for Naniwa to win because I like him and his playstyle and I like seeing a foreigner actually do well. But when he gets beat by Life or Innovation or someone like that, I wouldn't really be that bothered because I know Innovation is a better and more skilled player.

When 6/12 GSL champions who combined won 12/18 of the GSL's aren't going to play in Korea It's hardly an open and shut case that the best players are in GSL anymore.

Consider the fact that being a former champion doesn't mean that you're currently part of the best players in the world. They are not in Code S nor A. For now, I think the best will be in WCS KR. Or at least it will be the best way to determine the best player.

You really honestly believe that having mc/mvp in one league with 3 other koreans who aren't even that good, and a hole bunch of foreigners (who lets be honest are still shit at this game with the exception of nani/hano/grubby for eu) beats 200+ koreans who are all as good or better then said foreigners trying to even qualify for wcs kr? Even though nestea/mvp/mc won 12/18 gsls, they are still just 3 players, and they don't change the fact that eu/na will have a huge huge amount of players who are worse than almost any code b korean.

I guess I will take your word for it and ignore the results of the past 12 months. JK, I won't. Games change and former champions give way to new ones. I would love a more expansive, evidence supported argument for why GSL's claim to have the best players isn't an "open and shut case."

As much as i love Nestea and Mvp, they are not the best anymore. They fell out of for a reason. When we see Flash or Life going to the other WCS's, then we can start worrying.

I'm going to apologize for my statement after my temp ban,BUT SAY that I wasn't suggesting Naniwa doesn't want to play against the best, and he has proven he can. I was naming characteristics off all of those people together, and not necessarily suggesting that they all share the same ones.
But that ban was totally deserved, and should serve as a warning to others NOT to say anything of the sort on Teamliquid about pro players. I stand by what my statement was suggesting but regret going against Teamliquid's rules.
That being said, I'm interested to see how much this Alliance will help each other, and if more players will be joining the SC2 side of Alliance.
Everyone is getting real worked up about nationality and stuff. This is just the first season guys, Blizzard will listen to the community and do what they think is best. I know WCS seems rushed and probably was, but we just gotta wait it out.

But... he's right? I guess you can get banned for being honest? Oh well.
I've read the entire thread, and it seems no one has bothered to mention something that, to me at least, is perhaps the biggest indicator of Alliance being connected to EG: an interview with AdmiralBulldog in which he comments on the identity of their sponsor.

It's not like the evidence isn't good enough already, but still. If in the end EG has no involvement, AdmiralBulldog has trolled us all.
