We got a chance to briefly interview Red Bull Battle Grounds champion SKT_PartinG after his win.
You showed a lot of confidence throughout the tournament. But on the inside, were you feeling the pressure of having been in a slump and not having won a tournament in nearly a very long time?
I've lived thinking that I have to take responsibility for the things I say. So, when I showed so much confidence here at Red Bull Battle Grounds, I was truly confident that I could win it. The moment the groups were drawn, I thought it was a win for sure. I felt that I would be hugely disappointed in myself if I couldn't win the championship. So I taunted the other players a lot, saying that I would win for sure.
Well, you always taunt other players.
Yes that's true, but it was more so this tournament. I had no pressure.
When you were in a slump, your weak/strong match-ups seemed pretty clear. You were good at PvT and PvP, but not so good at PvZ. Do you think you had some bracket luck this tournament?
If it was my old self, if the old PartinG won this way, then it would have been said that I won because I was lucky. But I have come back a changed player. Maybe there was some luck, but even if I met a Zerg I would have won. To prove that, I'll beat Soulkey at the upcoming WCG. If I show people that, then they'll have to say I would have won Red Bull even if I had met a Zerg.
Yeah, you weren't really able to prove your PvT or PvZ against top Korean players in this tournament. Do you think you could beat them?
I think that I'm in the top three of Koreans right now, of all races combined. I'm not afraid of anyone I face, and no matter where we meet I will beat them.
You weren't able to use your famous Soul Train this tournament. Do you regret that? You even tweeted that you would use it for sure!
In a corner of my heart, I'm really sad about it. I wanted to do a Soul Train ceremony with the Thomas the Tank Engine, but there were no Zergs to perform it against.
When Scarlett was winning 2 - 0 against sOs, I thought "oh, could she really make it to the finals?" I had only been thinking of PvP builds up to then, but suddenly I changed my map strategizing to think about PvZ. Honestly, I was planning to Soul Train three times in a row. I wanted to show the fans that I could still use the Soul Train in a changed way, so I'm sorry to my fans that I wasn't able to show that to them at Red Bull. Next year, in 2014, there will be opportunities. So then, I will show my Soul Train to countless Zergs.
MC basically threatened you so you weren't able to perform a ceremony against him. If you had faced a different player, what would you have done?
I felt that my life was being threatened, so I couldn't perform a ceremony. If I had won, I wanted to throw some cookies on the ground, because you know, MC likes to eat. So I wanted to step on them and crush them while he was looking. It's a bit iffy to say he 'stopped' me from doing it, but in any case it's unfortunate I couldn't perform it, it would have been fun.
You came to a foreign tournament for the first time in a while. With Proleague starting in December, you'll have less opportunities to compete in them again. Isn't that kind of disappointing?
I made a promise to myself. When I first joined KeSPA, I said I would win championships in both individual and team tournaments. But I haven't been able to keep that promise yet. I will win the Proleague for my team, with my strength. I'll need the strength of my teammates as well, but I want to help as the main force. Also, I really want to win the GSL, the individual tournament.
Don't you feel like you might be a little overconfident ahead of WCG? Last year, you almost lost to a certain Canadian player...
The group stage changed to be a best of three this year. So, I don't think anyone's going to get lucky this year. As long as I don't play with one hand, I'm not going to lose. Honestly, I'm only thinking about Soulkey. Of course there's Sora, but honestly I think Sora is easy too. I've lost to Soulkey a lot so I can't call him easy. If I can beat him, then I can prove that 'PartinG is back.'
Your thoughts going into 2014?
This year, I devalued my name a lot because of my PvZ. I want to tell myself that I'm sorry. And I want to ask myself "why couldn't you do any better?" In 2014, I'll show you a PartinG that has fixed all his PvZ problems. I'll win Korean tournaments, not just international tournaments, so I hope my fans keep cheering for me.
Any last comments?
A big thanks to my team SK Telecom T1, and to my mother. I have a noona (older sister) in New York that I'm very close with, she heard that I was coming to New York and showed me around the city yesterday. I think I was able to win because of that...
Uh, not because you practiced hard?
Honestly, I didn't practice for this tournament. My noona helped me with my mental state, even since I was in Korea. I won't be able to see her anymore, but I'm very thankful to her. Love you! I'll only win from now, so don't worry about me.
Finally, the true world champion is back.

hmm while I liked the interview and always used to like Parting's interview before he joined SKT, I feel that he was calling out and taunting his opponents way too much if there was a thing? It's cool that he thinks he's top 3 atm and that other than SK, he thinks no one can beat him but him being so cocky is a bit unsettling for some reason :/
|
"Honestly, I was planning to Soul Train three times in a row."
That would be amazing hahaha
Edit: Ah, thanks for the interview!

Oh PartinG interviews how I missed you. <3
Thanks TL!

Of all the times you could say that, you say it when sOs comes in second?

Entertaining interview as usual from Parting.
|
Props to Parting on the win, but hes off his bananas if he thinks hes top 3
|
More soultrain plox. Make sure your opponents know about it too so they can blind hard counter and still lose.

Coming in second is "losing"? I'd understand if sOs gets knocked out in group stages or something...
|
His cockiness really rubs me the wrong way, no way he's top 3. Also glad he didn't end up doing the cookie ceremony, fat shaming isn't funny (except in korea).

I've missed partings drama. It's good to have him back

haha oh dear. Stepping on those cookies would have been really insulting to MC, I'm glad that didn't happen! I'm sure MC is a tough guy, but that's just mean. I like his confidence though, if parting became #1 I'd be happy with it

Parting cocky as always I wonder how much he has stepped up his game to claim that he is top 3. He was tearing it up pretty hard outside of PvZ but we will see in wcg how good he really is. But i am pretty sure you can easily call him top 10

Glad he didn't do the cookie ceremony after all. While i understand its not a big deal in korea apparently, it would have pushed it a step to far imo.

I felt better it was parting instead of sos. winning two champions in a row with cannon rush would be horrible to me.

Here's what the Protoss pros have to say:
EDIT: Damnit, I can't plug in twitter
Just check Parting's twitter

Before reading this: "oh parting, hes that really good korean toss right?"
AFter: "My god parting is bloody awesome, Just holy shit, bloody hiliarious, why have i not seen this shit before"
These interviews are invaluable. Makes these faceless korean players worth following. May of found my new fav toss.

Anyone knows who this noona of Parting's is? Thanks to her I guess, the champion is back indeed.

Well MC did say that "I'm so good at everything, even at eating." Well, when two trashtalk/ceremony-loving Koreans go at each other...lol.
|
Why wont anyone answer how MC threatened parting? I had to watch most of the tourney on mute at work and missed much of the in between game content. And no one is answering the question or linking the response =o
parting interviews are awesome, i just feel lost and confused not knowing about this one instance. i am sure it is something small. which is why many didn't know about it.
Not sure how many ceremonies are truly personal, a fat joke ceremony would be hilarious but i can see how it would hit outside of the game a bit much for MC with all the shit people talk on the forums about his appearance lately.
Didn't think parting would take this at all, he did a good job :D i was rooting for MC and SoS all the way tho D:
edit - if its not proper to link or talk about that part of the interview as mentioned above, pm it plz

God I love PartinG...
I've never thought that sOs, Dear, Trap or whatever, all these "new protoss" guys were "the best protoss in the world". It's probably still Rain that is the most skilled. followed closely by PartinG. But what do I know. So happy he won this and looking forward to seeing him BE BACK! PartinG<3 all the way

I never really felt Dear and sOs were "the best Protoss' in the world" due to a feeling in my heart. However, they really do kick ass in tournaments and Rain doesn't so... my feelings are probably wrong haha.

Parting was consistent at one point, partly to his soul train in PvZ then he dropped off the map completely. Dear on the other hand started much later and has been dominating in his play. I think it's too early to call Dear inconsistent when we haven't seen as much dominance out of a protoss since MC's days. I think Dear is here to stay. sOs though, such a fucking boss. He is truly the most innovative protoss in SCII and I also hope he sticks around and becomes more consistent with time

I think it would be hilarious, cause MC is a very confident guy and being fat in Asia ain't so bad. Maybe cause their not on top of the world in being fat like americans, or maybe people aren't judged based on how they look. And besides, MC is seriously NOT fat, he is not skinny either, he is simply perfect. He looks like a boss to me, eat like a champ. It would be really funny to mock a boss like MC with crushing cookies.

Lol and 1 week later SoS already loses title as "The Best in the world"

PartinG's good all around player.. I kinda believe him about being in top3 ATM.. Though he hasn't showed much results lately.. Still - remember him taking 2nd in a group of Life/Parting/Flash/Innovation (not sure about this one though), or sth like that..
Like that was the craziest possible group of death to EVER play in.. and he did it then.. Did it last night, believe he would do it all-over.. Because:
==> Oracles seem to fit him well..

He didn't just come in second, he started that group by calling Life out! And then he beat Flash and Life in some very convincing games.

Being fat in korea`s the worst. There`s so much socially acceptable fat shaming and it`s regarded as synonymous with laziness. Korea is also more harsh/judgemental on looks than the west.

The guy never truly left. BoxeR should have played him more in PL instead of overworking Rain. At least he's using his celebrity status now like YellOw. Shouldn't have been manager though.

It's not too farfetched to say that top3 player atm are all protosses. They look dominant, they are consistent and they win all tournaments. Lets see if PartinG could take this WCG, he really got the momentum to do it

You can say that, but there is a lot of consensus when it comes to the top ten let alone top five protoss players for 2013. PartinG didn't need to win this special event to keep his momentum going. He already had momentum going into the WCG. Clear favorite over Sora.

I wouldn't call PartinG cocky. When he says cocky stuff he says it with a tongue-in-cheek smirk. To me, some one like MVPSniper is truly cocky. For some reason, he just gives off that aura of cockiness.

Coming in second is "losing"? I'd understand if sOs gets knocked out in group stages or something... It was an 8 player tournament. He didn't have to beat a lot of people to get 2nd.
He also almost lost to a foreigner whose weakest matchup is ZvP and he lost a very one sided finals.

It was a fun casual interview with by Waxangel (?) i think, with Parting, MC, Smix, and Reis. At one point (6:50) Wax ask MC if he was going to do any ceremony, he said something like "if I win this tournament I will ceremony, but ... I say if you win (pointing at Parting) you can ceremony but I will kill you, because he doesn't respect me all the time" (referring to some incidents in the training room where Parting randomly trashtalking MC and got beaten up by him)

Being fat in korea`s the worst. There`s so much socially acceptable fat shaming and it`s regarded as synonymous with laziness. Korea is also more harsh/judgemental on looks than the west.
I did laugh when I read that. Korea has to be the number 1 country in the world in terms of plastic surgery. If it's not number 1, it has to easily be in the top 3.
The rest of East Asia and likely Southeast Asia as well is pretty bad when it comes to judging based on looks. I moved from that region to Southern California and they are so much fucking worse than even Hollywood.

Gotta love PartinG, he never fails to impress with his trash talk and his ability to back it up. He's PvP looked absolutely outstanding.

I think that I'm in the top three of Koreans right now
This has to be the evolution of the "top three control" (HuK) meme. I'll be the first to use it when PartinG gets crushed by one of the non-top three Koreans in a week or so.

I don't understand this at all. What has MVPSniper done for you to think he is more cocky than Parting who in almost every interview he ever does is saying how great he is, how he will 4-0 his opponents etc, etc etc. Him having that smirk when he says it makes him even more cocky. Not hating on Parting here just saying he is not humble.

It was a fun casual interview with by Waxangel (?) i think, with Parting, MC, Smix, and Reis. At one point (6:50) Wax ask MC if he was going to do any ceremony, he said something like "if I win this tournament I will ceremony, but ... I say if you win (pointing at Parting) you can ceremony but I will kill you, because he doesn't respect me all the time" (referring to some incidents in the training room where Parting randomly trashtalking MC and got beaten up by him) just some friendly trashtalk haha, but the whole video is pretty damn hilarious Thanks! That's pretty good. MC and Parting have some of the est personalities in SC2.

True world champion because he won redbull isn't that taking it a little far. But i think that most people think that and he's just happy so whatever. it's a start to become the best player in the world continue win and i will consider you the strongest player in the world. Like in the beginning everybody though innovation was the best and i was almost starting to think it and he started loosing started vs bomber. Maybe some players can have good runs for couple months then they start losing.

They're joking around. PartinG has been considered as one of the top protoss players for sometime now. I think it's come to the point where every player should use any tournament or special event win to their advantage and jokingly say they're the number one guy now because everyone knows how short-lived every victory is. Use it to your advantage and have fun with it.

Yeah, it's completely and utterly unacceptable that the current world champion made it all the way to the finals of a fairly stacked tournament and lost to a player who was 2013 WCG Korea Champion and last year's World Champion.

Well, to be fair, PartinG is ranked 43 in the world according to 2013 WCS Standings, that came to be in order to find the 16 best players in 2013 for the grand final, so PartinG was pretty far from reaching the final. Before him in said ranking are 9 foreigners and 33 Koreans...
At least I find it highly amusing that #43 can beat #1 4-1. Never lose hope, uncle Bob may still win at the end of the day!

So you're basing his skill off his ranking? He had low points because he never went to any foreign tournaments between the WCS Seasons. He got 2 top 8 eights and a ro16 in wcs Korea.

You really shouldn't be putting that much stock into rankings. Do you also think KingKong is a better player than Scarlett or Hyun because he has a higher ELO than them? Most rankings are at best an extremely rough approximation of actual skill.

This just in, when you win a tournament, you have to win EVERYTHING FOR THE NEXT 5 MONTHS or starcraft is dead lol. Sorry, I'm from BW where winning a championship actually meant you were great. Where the OSL champion would be laughed at if he lost at a foreign tournament with 8 players, with Bomber and Parting being the only players playing at a high overall level. Especially dropping 2 maps to a foreigner during the run...
This just in, your head far up your ass.

Firstly, you call it a "foreign tournament" as if that's supposed to be derogatory, even though lots of foreign tournaments are stacked with top Koreans, so I don't know what your reasoning was there.
Secondly, Scarlett is really damn good, and her being a foreigner shouldn't mean that it's embarrassing to drop maps to her as a top-level Korean.

Not to be a hater but BW had the exact same shit happening. Remember Effort winning 2010 Korean Air OSL and then dropping in Groups in the Korean Air OSL Season 2 going 1-2 in a group with Leta, Action and Bisu. Was a 4 months difference which is longer then sOs WC title but sOs got second which isn't bad considering Parting's winrate against P.
Plus comparing OSL champions in the BW era with the foreign scene at that time isn't really fair considering how things changed since then.

EDIT: Well, it collected players for the grand final, that was the purpose. Players have good and bad days that affect them heavily too, and some times playing one bad match can be extremely costly. Nevertheless, there seems to be no guaranteed winner here and I do like that.

It comes from PartinG's signature PvZ build in WoL. Better known as the Immortal-Sentry all-in, PartinG has been forever now associated with the strategy when he claimed his version of the build was the most powerful because he puts the most "soul" into it. I think it was also refereed as the "pain train", at some point, it didn't take long afterwards for the term "soul train" to be born.

Curse of the OSL Champion The champion of the previous Starleague would fail to advance out of the Round of 16, usually with a victory in their opening match and then two subsequent losses.
Winning a championship meant you were great in BW, did it? Champions consistently placed highly in every tournament for a while after their championships, right?

It happened a few times (there were 33 tournaments after all) but the curse was eerily consistent, not even the bonjwas were immune to it. (Yeah, bonjwas, the guys some people around here would have you think all won at least 15 OSLs each and sported 99.8% win rates across match-ups.)

Soul Train is a nickname for Parting's immortal sentry all-in. Parting said that he's able to pull it off when other players can't because he does it so "soulfully", so we call it the Soul Train.
