SPOTV does a series called "Canta's CALLING" where Canata calls progamers and interview them through a phone call. So far, the episodes have featured: Maru/Dream, Losira, herO, Solar, NaDa, MMA, and announcer Lee Hyun Kyung/Classic. The most recent episode: consisted of MarineKing as the invited guest. As expected, Canata asked him about the vs ByuL match that caused ALL KINDS of controversies. Here is the translation:
(0:22 - 0:39) ???: Hello? Canata: Yes, hello. ???: Hi. Canata: This is "Canata's CALLING." ???: Haha~ Hello~ Canata: Hello~ Please introduce yourself. MarineKing: I am Lee Jung Hoon, who is currently living at the MVP team house.
(0:40 - 1:32) Canata: A lot of people have suggested to us that we interview you. MarineKing: Really? Canata: Yes. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to talk to you about a lot of things. So I said we should go ahead and call you. MarineKing: Ah~ I see. Thank you. Canata: Thank you? (laughs) Is this something to be thankful about? MarineKing: Haha~ Yeah, well... I am grateful to you guys for coming to a nobody like me. Canata: (laughs) A nobody? You're Lee "MarineKing" Jung Hoon. MarineKing: Haha, no. That's like from 4 years ago though. Canata: Ahhh, so you're saying that this is not the case now? MarineKing: Yeah. Canata: Alright, well, even though it's nice to have a fun and bright interview, I feel that it's important to answer some questions that the fans have been curious about. Is that alright? MarineKing: Yes. It's fine with me.
(1:33 - 2:35) Canata: So, for yesterday's match, when MVP won against CJ, we did not see you on the bench. Why weren't you at the studio? MarineKing: A lot of the MVP players, including me, are lacking a lot right now. So I wanted to utilize the travel time of going to the Proleague studio and use that to focus on practice. Canata: Why do you believe that your performance has fallen off so much lately? MarineKing: For my skills overall, I'm somewhat lacking. Also, because I kept on losing, I fell into a slump, got stressed out, and the pressure got intense, so my skills were not coming out for my performances. Canata: Are you perhaps not practicing as much as you'd like? MarineKing: For a while, it was difficult to focus on just solely practicing. So there were parts of me that were lacking. But right now I've grabbed a hold of my mentality and am working hard.
(2:36 - 2:45) Canata: Umm... The match that occurred not too long ago... That match was against ByuL correct? MarineKing: Yes, that is correct. Canata: That match caused a whole bunch of debate to occur.
(2:46 - 3:12 small clip showing what happened during the match)
(3:13 - 7:49) MarineKing: Hahaha... Yeah... Canata: I think we need to hear you explain this yourself. Back then, how come you didn't notice what was going on? MarineKing: First off, that was a play that I had never experienced before... And there are things like, hatchery timings, you know? Canata: Right. MarineKing: I guess I probably would have realized what was going on had it been practice, but during that time my condition was not the best. My mentality was also not good so I ended up getting completely nervous. I didn't realize that it was a proxy hatch build. I thought it was a fast speed ling build. So I told myself, "okay, I just need to wall off my ramp, start producing hellions, and go for a macro game." I watched the VOD later on and I realized that my reaper had unintentionally moved downwards then upwards and caught a brief glimpse of the spine crawler that was building. However, I did not see that at the time of the match so that's why I went for a triple CC macro build. Canata: Speaking of the triple CC build, people said that the timing for that was also very suspicious. MarineKing: Yeah, that's true. Canata: (laughs) What do you mean, "Yeah, that's true?" That's not something you should be admitting to. Can you tell us why you did that? MarineKing: Because of my quick scout, I saw what ByuL was doing. I thought it was a fast speed ling build. So I anticipated that ByuL would pick a handful of lings, and then proceed into a macro game later on. It was my complete mistake. Canata: So what you're saying, is that you considered ByuL's play style, and you figured that he would either go for a ling/bling all-in, or grab a handful of lings and then expand afterwards. So you told yourself that you would respond with a triple CC build. Is this correct? MarineKing: Yes Canata: Hmm, I see... Well honestly for me as well, I had so much emotions running through me during that match... It was the kind of match that caused a lot of things to be said... MarineKing: Yeah. I only knew about what had happened after the match ended. I had no idea what was going on during the actual match. I didn't realize that the spine crawler had been spotted in my field of vision. I made a mistake that a progamer should not have made, and I showed a performance that was not worthy of being shown on a Proleague stage, so I was really upset and felt really sorry to the fans for doing that. Even afterwards, I still have yet to grab a victory, and my performance has not been good. So I think for the time being, I'm going to have to focus on just practicing and raising my skill. Canata: I see. Well, MarineKing, until this season of Proleague ends, I will continue to watch you in hopes that your effort will one day revive you to the point where you'll succeed again. MarineKing: Thank you for that. If I do end up winning again, I will dedicate a ceremony just for you. Canata: Oh, that's great~ You pledged this to me! MarineKing: Haha, yeah. It's a pledge that may be very difficult to fulfill, but I will go for it! Canata: Well, I will continue to wish for your sucess. Now please say something to your fans. MarineKing: I'm sure my fans are upset with me. I haven't been performing like a professional and I keep showing terrible performances that result in losses. Therefore, I don't blame you guys for criticizing me and cursing me since I think I obviously deserve it. But right now, I've grabbed a hold of my mentality, and I am practicing a lot and working real hard, so please continue to watch me. Canata: Well, you pulled it off last year right? You got 2nd place for the HOT6 CUP. MarineKing: Right. Canata: You pulled off a big bang when a lot of people weren't expecting anything from you. Therefore, I will once again be waiting for your performance. MarineKing: Okay, I understand. Canata: Thank you for answering our call today. I hope to see you at the studio next time. MarineKing: Understood. Thank you for today as well. Canata: MarineKing fighting! MarineKing: Yup~ Fighting!
(7:50 Call Ends) Canata: MarineKing is definitely going through a difficult time right now. But I can see that he is getting ready to progress forward again. Therefore, I hope a lot of people will once again watch MarineKing and believe in him. I can't help but think that MarineKing will repay everyone with good performances if this happens. I too wish to see MarineKing's winning form again. Well, that's it for now. We will see you again next week. Bye~
this is a little late since MKP (or rather Most Valualbe Marine now...) has been in the scene since practically day 1, but i feel that his marine icon should get a little crown...
MKP keeps talking about the spinecrawler he missed that was a speck on the minimap. What about the creep spread that was intruding into half of his base? Just release the replay or else the game will always be dubious
As a long time fan of MK, in the condition he is currently in (and that of ByuL), I doubt he could really throw that game anyway. Outside cheese, ByuL would have probably won either way.
If MK wanted to lose, he could have just played a straight up game and lost anyway. (Sad to say =/)

I may do them in the future. But this will depend on how high the demands are. TL has lost a lot of traffic since SC2 has been losing popularity. Because of that, most of the interviews I do on TL get less and less views/replies every year, so I've started to become more and more discouraged about translating interviews. None the less, the 10Q/10A videos that Sojung does and these Canata CALLING videos are really freaking good. I would like to translate them all. I just don't know if the workload will be worth it in the end though. That part I'm still trying to figure out. I honestly feel like people just don't care about the interviews these days.
I read pretty much every interview with Korean players that is posted on TL but I very rarely post in the topics. I'm sure there are lots of people that do that.

Well, I read a lot of the interviews, though I have to admit that I've mostly stopped responding with 1-liner "thanks" in those threads. However, your hard work is very much appreciated, thank you.

I care, not everyone replies anymore because often times it's just gaining information and there's not much to reply to, I guess I will start responding with thanks Seeker.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your effort and time put into it.
I read pretty much every interview that involves the Korean scene.
Wasn't going to post in this thread because MKP vs ByuL makes me sad and this interview makes me sadder regardless of what truly happened that day... but that's no reason not to supercharge Seeker with passhun. Thanks Seeker!

When the debate was at its strongest (so when it just happened), Aeromi from O'gaming watched the replay and according to him the creep was out of vision for the longest time.
It's nice finally hearing back from the player. That explanation also is pretty much as plausible as it gets. It's understandable sometimes a player can be too focused on one aspect of the game and slipped on the other. In this case, it's actually quite likely that when he scouted no natural hatch he fixed himself onto this illusion of 10 or 11 pool. That explains why he did not send out his reapers, since as long as he does not suicide his reapers he should be in great shape.
In the match fixing scenario, the most plausible explanation would be that he didn't know what to do once he found the proxy hatch. But in this case it would be very suspicious not to move reapers onto the map, and I think if he is match fixing, it's probably more natural to move out reapers as he originally intended.
Not saying there is definitely no match fixing, but it is pretty likely that the play we see is not a deliberate play to lose after realizing it is a proxy hatchery.
Oh, did he just officially abdicate the crown? All hail Maru, King of Marines, who will surely raise the House of Marines to the long vacant imperial throne. With a relatively stable control over the Terran heartlands and his brother Duke Polt ruling the provinces it's just a matter of time the house can claim the title Emperor of Terran for Maru.
The only serious threats to them are those pesky SKT pretenders...
I think in the end it's a moot point, nice to hear from him but moot. He's not going to say "I fixed it" is he? Those that believe him will, those that don't will believe he's full of shit.
Personally. I want to believe, because God knows I don't want match fixing in the SC2 scene but I don't see how he comes to the conclusion it's speedlings. He SEES the late pool, he checks the Golds, even in full LOLMarineKing mode, dude's gotta at least suspect there's a proxy somewhere but he never checks

Get over it. Players have to find ways to stay relevant. It's far worse when they cheat/scam etc. Much rather hear success stories of crossover than hear about rigging matches.

Great read Thanks. Good to see some clarification on the Byul vs. MK match, from MK's perspective at least. I hope he can bring surprising results once again!

About MKP, I'm willing to believe him even if it's hard. I'm a teacher irl, and I saw some of my pupils perform so bad when they lack self-confidence that it's hard to believe they don't fooling around or mocking you. But they don't... I hope for MKP he'll be able to get his shit together.

Did someone bet thousands of dollars on the other kids performing better in the test right before it started as well?
interviews are cool but as it's been said, one cannot reply much to it. Thank you for you work, it really is much appreciated. Please give us a translation of herO's Canata's calling. Like who is this guy? Why is he awesome and why does he always smile? :D
edit: also folks, please stop hating MKP, for there is no way he fixed that game. what would he have won from it? Byul is so much better than him there's not a chance he would have paid MKP to loose, since he already was in a slump and had maybe a 10% chance of winning. maybe. I mean BuyL beat Maru in BO5 but would loose to MKP the random five CC before rax terran player? No way. Confidence and stress are, in my point of vue, what explains MKP's defeat. He throws games when he is in a slump. That's what he does, i.e. semifinals from Iron Squid II. He is just that emotionnal that he cannot get a grasp of his skills when in a loosing streak. i.e. every GSL final he has been in ever.

Your comment is rather ignorant. This was about gambling, not about Byul paying MK to lose.
In the match fixing hypothesis, MK acted so nervous because he scouted Byul's cheese, and was actually running the risk of winning the game...

I am finding it hard to watch any korean sc2 now days. I have been an avid sc2 fan since day one. I have played the game almost everyday for nearly five years. These match fixing scandals were a pretty big blow to me. They have caused me to put sc2 down and pick cs:go up.

Valve has suspended about 20 players because of match fixing, it's more prevalent in CSGO so it's slightly ironic.
He says because of his quick scout, he anticipated a fast speedling build. But what his scout showed him was that byul had no gas, no pool, and no hatch.

Fascinating, thank you. What needs be added other than what's already been said regarding that match?
It's interesting reading the comments on workload. This is so interesting, and so important, and had you not translated I would never of known it even happened. This workload should shift to the Korean studios more, to translate their media into a more international friendly form. Often in the TL live report threads comments land about no translations, in both GSL and KESPA. It's a shame because there are a fair few of us out here..

Yes he did, and MK saw both.
Okay maybe he saw pool and gas, but he also saw their timing, despite no hatch. No one with a brain assumes fast speedling. Guess what else happened at the same time as he did that? Betting lines were deliberately manipulated.

Sure the ones that read are less but we care a lot! Thank you again, Im slowly learning Korean and I hope someday Ill be gosu like you ^.^
The 10Q10A episodes are translated by SpoTV, there's a YT playlist with them...
Oh really? Can you link them?
They stopped translating 10Q10A but they have all of them with Korean subs <.<
Yeah. The ones with the Korean subs are the ones that I want to translate.
Thank you so much for translating this seeker! I'd love to see more of these in the future now that Sojung has left Spotv and we won't be getting as much English content from the players.

I may do them in the future. But this will depend on how high the demands are. TL has lost a lot of traffic since SC2 has been losing popularity. Because of that, most of the interviews I do on TL get less and less views/replies every year, so I've started to become more and more discouraged about translating interviews. I am an intrinsic lurker so I rarely reply to any threads I read. I need to stop that so that I can actually make my appreciation felt. I love the 10Q/10A and Canata Calling videos and I really really depend on translations like yours to enjoy them.
Assuming he's innocent, which I'd like to, this is not likely to blow over like a common scandal. The king of marines, the man who practically invented marine splitting, 10 time silver medal winner, a man who at one time had so much glory and fame. He will now go down in history for playing the worst broadcasted game ever. It would be hard to top that. It will take another great victory to wipe the bad taste of this one away for his fans.

It seems that there is money in CS:GO. Be ready to write the same commentary mutatis mutandis in a couple of years.
It's not about money for me and never has been. Are you saying that when the money starts running low in CS:GO people will start resorting to alternative methods to make up for it?
It's different though, I've always loved watching sc2 as much as playing it. Any big tournament was like Super Bowl weekend for me. Watching pro's inspired me to try harder and get better. With CS:GO I don't watch any streams, follow any teams, know of any tournaments or leagues... I just play.
Ya, watching sc2 definitely was a major factor that kept me playing. When I have to ask myself if korean pro's are playing legitimately or not... ya I guess my "sc2 heart" was broken and will take time to repair.

Your point is still valid though, I don't see how you can see the pool still morphing at 3:25 and still come up with "Speedlings". Even if we assume that he had a "LOLMarineKing" breakdown and just had a mind implosion, if he thinks "Speedlings", even if it's a handful before going macro, why does he build only 2 reapers to defend before going hellion? There's "I trust my micro" and there's "get the fuck out". The more I think of it, the LESS I believe him.

That's why I wanted to hear his explanation, since there is no explanation. And he just proved it. But some people will believe it, so that's the best explanation he can offer.
I've lurked here for a long time, but never posted before. I think now would be a good opportunity to make my first post and say I've read a bunch of the interviews you've translated, Seeker, and really appreciate what you do. I'm sure there's a ton more like me. Don't be discouraged! <3
Thanks a lot for the translation of the interview! Glad that Canata decided to reach out to MarineKing and give him the chance to 'explain himself'. Unconvincing, admittedly, but its good to hear that he's practicing a lot again.
I can understand where MKP is coming from, I can't imagine that I'm the only one who sees something out of the ordinary and just assumes it's a "bad" version of what you've seen before. He admits his mindset isn't great since he has been in a slump, that shows consistantly through when he was forever 2nd place, and currently in his worst point. In games where I don't know what is going on, but see something that looks like aggression, I would make the same play. I also have played games in which I don't notice something on my minimap that I should, mainly Nydus Worms. Thinking about his play, seeing him hold back his reapers, then make fast hellions to try and defend what he says he assumes was a speedling build makes sense to me, reactored factory and marauders also would hold a roach timing, which could be another theoretical allin. The game was depressing but I can't say it's unordinary for MK when he is in slumps to play poorly, GL to him.
Also, this is one of my rare posts in TL, thanks seeker for translations!!!! Just remember that we all appreciate you despite not always posting it <3<3<3

It brought down a God with ease... it will just laugh at a mere King. No amount of victory will remove any dishonor he suffers from this, people may like him a little more but it is almost impossible to reearn trust that is lost from something like match fixing.
Edited note: I actualy watch little SC2, the time is terrible for most of the korean tournaments and foreign SC2 bores me... nor od I care enough to watch the vods like I do for broodwar these days, but I love reading the interviews. I don't comment much but I do like reading them seeker.

San? GSL? I refuse to take sides on this matter but when you're not in top form and mentally unstable, you miss things. You really do: small or big,
People have come to except so much from players, and when they don't perform at their expected level, they instantly assume the worst and jump at their throats. This is one big reason I despise competition in general. People forget that those who are playing are human, make (huge) mistakes, and lose. I'm at fault too. I can't deny competitive play is fun and it's something I love at watching but are players exempt from human nature? Are they people of higher stature and should be regarded to hold a higher moral discipline? Sure, people look up to them and model themselves after them, but it has become so...ugh...
Whatever. San had one of the worst performances I've ever seen, worst than MKP's, two matches in a row in GSL. Imo, San's laughs at MKP's.

I would LOVE to see The Calling translated, as well as other SPOTV StarCraft shows. It's such a pity that they seem to separate Korean and English content (making dedicated shows for one or the other), while many people would be interested in watching both.

Anyone defending MKP for having an MKP bad day...needs to explain why he told us he reasoned after scouting byul, but the reasoning he gave us makes no sense. When you scout late pool late gas no hatch, you know what's going on. Hint: it's not fast speedlings.
People mostly forget Byuls rise came mostly after this game as did most of MKP's slump. Byul had lost to players like Terror recently and MKP wasnt on his current losing streak. Im glad MKP finally made a statement but I dont believe him. Fortunately no voids in past two weeks but we should remain vigilant against matchfixing.
Remember there were 6-7 voids it wasnt just this match. Hopefully the publicity and Soulkey/police situation have scared off the match fixers for the time being.
I really like marineking but I have watched this game and what he's saying is just not possible. He could see it on the minimap. Watch the game again and tell me he didn't throw.
For what its worth you guys realise san is one of the other players who had a match voided and is suspected of fixing right, not the best example to use for "poor play isnt evidence of fixing". While thats a valid point its perhaps more applicable in other contexts. Mkps explanation makes no sense im in plat atm and theres no way id scout what he scouted and think speedlings followed by an expansion

I agree with your conclusion but want to point out that more reapers wont help vs speedling build, you only want 2 and then hellion. getting 3 reaper delays hellion too much to be worth it. you want hellions out by 535

Just logged into say I rarely post and login, but I do read all the content on teamliquid everyday as part of my normal routine when I get to work, thanks for all the work into content to pass the early mornings at work.
Having said that though.. Is it me or has there been less and less recaps to read about for gsl and s2sl ?

I grant you that. But he doesn't build anything. Nothing except a 3rd CC and a tech lab, if he's thinking Speedlings surely he makes something else for defence

As long as he had a wall a speedling all in will do literally nothing except cost minerals to repair the supply depots. If it was in fact a speedling all in MVPMK's build would have put him really REALLY far ahead
He knows the timing of a pool and gas for a speedling all in when that build is actually happening guys, don't kid yourselves. You believe the following three things occurred together by coincedence:
1. MKP scouted VERY late pool and gas and assumed speedling allin. 2. MKP missed his minimap while sitting on one base for over a minute straight. 3. Betting lines on the match were deliberately manipulated to maximize profit in the event of a MKP loss in the game.

How is your number 2 an argument against MarineKing? I'm at a GM level and I barely watch the minimap at all when I'm on one base. There is not really much that can happen at that time and I don't have multiple bases to look out for. One base just makes it more believable imo.

You're telling me that you scout your opponent, see that he's cheesing you hard off one base with a strange gas/pool timing and don't think to look at the minimap at all?
