A few years ago, Evil Geniuses and Team Liquid partnered with Papa John’s on something we called Pizza.GG. As some of you may recall, the esports community helped unlock tiers of special events, giveaways, and content by—well, y’know—ordering pizza. The goal was to show Papa John’s that esports was for real and that the esports community was a place worth investing in—and the response was overwhelming. Every single tier was unlocked within 2 days, which exceeded even our wildest expectations. While the event was a success, we know that we can do better.
Now, it might have taken a while, but we’re back (finally)! Over the next few months, EG and Liquid will be working with Papa John’s to bring you guys more special events and cool content. We’ve got even better ingredients this time, and these are just some of the things we’ve got in the works:
50% off Online Pizza Orders
To celebrate this announcement, Papa John’s is offering 50% off on all pizzas ordered online within the United States through December 27th! Follow the instructions on the page above to enjoy your own half-off pizza delivery!
Starcraft Community VOD Night
The Starcraft community was crucial to the success of our first Pizza.GG partnership a few years ago, and what better way to celebrate Starcraft than to spend a day eating pizza and watching VODs? We'll be putting together a Community VOD Night in early January, which will allow Starcraft fans to experience all of the feels with their favorite EG and Liquid pros as we all look back at some of the most memorable matches in history. Chill out in our voice channel and chat with other fans about your fondest memories and favorite games. Some of our players will be there to mingle, so don't be surprised to hear a familiar voice! Oh, and did we mention the pizza? Certain lucky fans who join the VOD Night channel will receive a free pizza they can enjoy while they watch.
Showmatches
Beginning in early January, we'll be organizing a variety of showmatches sponsored by Papa John's. Together, we've put aside $25,000 for the festivities, and every game is going to get some love. While we already have a few interesting ideas of our own, we want to know what you'd like to see! From grudge matches to themed games, we're all ears for what you guys would enjoy the most. We'll be requesting showmatch ideas from you guys in the coming weeks.

Is there a reason to use a generic PizzaGG code? It seems theres a lot of codes, TeamliquidPro, TeamliquidLoL, Hungrybox, PPMD etc. I am kinda conflicted on whose code to use.
I'd hate the use the wrong code, and TL management making Bunny and/or Mana attend a sales workshop because they weren't pushing enough Pizzas.
I'm really confused what took so long to bring this back when the first event was so successful.
This is good. I just hope the rewards are more clearly shown when to be released or streamed. :Last time I missed all the showmatches and stuff and never saw too much about them.

How dare you create this promotion when you completely failed to deliver on the previous one?
I bought a bunch of pizza and drove 20 miles to get it (40 mile round trip), and got shafted. Do I like pizza? Sure. But even with the discount the pizza I bought cost more than my favorite pizza place in my town and I had to drive quite far to get it.
Shame on TL. Deliver what said you would, then do a pizza promotion, because this is just a slap in our faces.

actually as harsh as he makes it sound, i agree with it. The last pizza promotion was very unsatisfactory for the community. I don't know why another event is being promoted, when the people who bought pizza for the last one got cheated basically.
Well it at least looks like they've set their sights lower as far as the number of rewards offered. This time around, there's not 10 reward levels for different amounts of pizzas. And there's probably a reason.

I don't see any rewards?
I think they're holding off the reward tier bonus until Jan. 4th, as seen on their website, unless you're seeing something I'm not.
Until the promises from last time are fulfilled, I don't think supporting this is a good idea.
Last time around, there was a ton of support, we hit every goal fairly quickly, and then got ignored for the most part. This seems like more of a "We waited a couple years, hopefully people forgot, let's try again", than anything else.

I agree with you on the basis of the principal, but when I get pizza I only order from papa johns anyway, so not using this would be ridiculously stupid for me.
Pretty much this. Deliver what was promised last time first. Otherwise, we who don't normally buy from Papa John's don't care. Those that do are just going to use it for the coupon. Don't expect much excitement or engagement from the community when they were burned before with promises not being kept.
Oh boy, this can't end well. On the other hand the sc2 community is just a drop in the bucket now and I'm sure the other communities will love this. So overall it should still be a success. Just make sure to deliver all the promised stuff in a timely manner this time or this will hurt the reputation of EG, TL and PapaJohn in all the esports scenes.
Kinda happy that this has nothing do with Germany anway, so I don't have to think about whether I want to support this or not.
Yeah, I'm all for supporting stuff like this, but given how long it took for the rewards to come out last time (if at all) I'm sort of skeptical. Especially since I'm not a huge Papa John's fan in the first place.

I wouldn't be so sure, the other communities will likely have enough people that bled over from SC that were aware of the last pizza.gg, or will hear about it because of talk between the communities (News travels fast online). Hopefully they don't get fooled as well.
Well actually, hopefully things turn out well this time and everything is great, but I'm not going to be too optimistic.
I am another one of the people who bought extra pizzas to help support the community events and they never happened. Kind of bullshit there is another event like this. But don't worry guys, my life for auir is coming out soon, just like the other documentaries. heuhueheuh... :l

They never happened except for Tier 8 if I remember.
And I really wanted to see the eating contest for some reason. I had this feeling Machine would win.
I think the showmatch thing will be cool, that much money should be able to bring some great stuff. But god help them against the shitshow that would follow if they mess up on delivering promises again.

i think the problem with the first pizza.gg was more the fact that it literally took years for some of the promises to be fulfilled, not that they weren't met.
i don't really eat papa johns anyway so it's not like i'm boycotting this.

IIRC they didnt deliver on a couple things , in the grand scheme its not that huge of a deal , but when you tell people your going to do all these great things , even though your giving them a deal on something , not following through is kinda shitty.

In terms of Pizza places Papas is pretty good IMO , alot better than Pizza Hut / Dominos / Little Ceasars . its a little bit more expensive but they usually have coupons or specials going on .
I can't believe the people on this site sometimes. They give you a huge discount on pizza and people complain that Papa john's is a serious problem?? Only an esports community like this would make that connection.
So what if they don't deliver on their promises? You still get a good deal on pizza. Why would you say no to that?
There are two options. Either papa johns doesn't do anything and you have no events, or it tries to do something, and you have maybe a delayed event or no event at all. If at worse its the latter, well fine its as if nothing happened.
But regardless, they give you 50% off pizza. How is this a bad thing overall...I just don't understand. I wish I lived in the US to get that tasty discount

This " HUGE " discount is something that comes up pretty often if your a part of their member rewards , yeah some people are bitching a little too much , but I mean everyone is entitled to an opinion . What upsets people isnt so much Papa Johns , its the people who they backed with not fulfilling 100% . Either way pizzas are still going to be sold and people will enjoy it , but you cant sit here and tell me if someone did this to you it wouldn't leave a sour taste in your mouth .
Anyway Enjoy the pizza boys or don't its up to you .

If you live in Kentucky/greater Cincinnati area you'd know they pretty much always have at least 25%, using the coupon 25OFF(this always works), or 50% off coupons basically year round (especially for cardinals/louisville events 45% off beacuse it is a school sponsor).... So... It's more about how many/how much people are enticed to do this for the community (aka buy more pizza because it goes to X).
I think the main reason people are upset is because of their money being funneled into this and it being delayed for months and months.

I don't give any kind of a shit about their garbage pizza. I got a couple to show support for esports. If you want half off a random chain pizza, it's not that hard to find a coupon or take advantage of any other random deal or promotion. They're making their money anyway because the pizza costs them thirteen cents. "So what if they don't deliver on their promises?" I don't know, you make a habit of not delivering on what you say you'll do and see how well it works out for you.
What I remember from last time is that fulfilling these goals didn't really work out, so doing it again might not be the best idea?! Sad to see another event exclusively for NA.
Guys, just think of this as a promotion to get 50% off on pizzas and nothing more. Don't do it for the other "tiers." Last time TL, EG, and Root did the promotion there was a huge controversy because they didn't follow through on their promises. When through they did follow through on a couple, it was like 6 months to a year late.

Thirteen cents? You must have really low salaries back in the US for a pizza to have thirteen cents in production cost. (marketing and logistics also not included) But yes, they still do profit with deals like these so I can understand the people who feel betrayed.

Was going to order some pizzas for once, until I realized all the PJ's around my area closed down and the next nearest one is 15 miles away. Guess too much competition from the local pizzerias galore and Pizza Hut/Domino's on top of that.

I've had Pizza Huts within 5 miles that refused to deliver to me because it was "too far." And if I do carryouts, I rather have a hot pizza, as it isn't exactly a food I'd eat in the car. Plus I could get NY style slices just 3 blocks down.

Well, I feel vindicated for what I said then, and don't need to take another 20 mile drive for pizza. Even though what you said isn't technically an apology, it feels like it, but it should have come way sooner and should have righted a wrong. Sadly, it did neither.
Supporting E-Sports in 2013 felt like you were supporting a grass-roots movement, not a corporate entity. Probably everyone on this forum has been ripped off by a corporate entity in one way or another, but the failure to deliver what you said you would deliver, made TL feel like just another corporate entity taking advantage of us.
The fact is, TL and Papa Johns didn't care enough about the community to make it right. Otherwise you would have.
It is why I can't buy pizza for this, and why I wrote a letter to Papa Johns deriding their decision to work with Team Liquid. We all got our choices to make.
Sorry, I'd rather spend my money "supporting" my locally and family run pizza shop who truly deserves it for the services rendered, than some some coorporate entity that doesn't deliver its promises to "support" Team Liquid and the sc2 community. The ruddy cheek of it all.
Also their pizza is cheaper, tastier, healthier and more genuine than any of these pizza franchises.

Lol, fair enough. I live in the largest city in the US, Jacksonville. It takes 45-50 minutes on the highway without traffic to go from one end to the other. 15 miles that is highway connected here equals 15 minutes driving time, 15 miles down a busy road (non highway) means about 35 minute drive lol.

Eh our salaries aren't low (unless your a waiter/waitress, who only get 3-4 dollars a hour and tips.) It just the business has contacts so they pay a lot up front, but the ingredients become cheaper.
For example: If farmer A is offering a company his cheese at .80 cents a pound. And farmer B is offering the same company his cheese for .10 cents a pound, but with lets say a contract. In the contract, they buy the cheese from him for a year and give him lets say 100,000$ at the signing of the contract. All the company has to do is put it into a linear equation (for A, .80x. and B, .10x +100,000) and choose the farmer based off of how much cheese they need.
However i'm not sure it costs thirteen cents for the ingredients of a pizza. Idk, while i'm well versed in pizza statistics. I'm not up to par on pizza science/cost .
since i live in NY & we have the best pizza in america, i dont know of anyone who goes to papa johns. PapaJohns/Dominoes/PizzaHut are places people go to when they have no good pizza places around. But hey, i think its cool they're throwing some money at esports/SC2. The more the merrier.

I take our word very seriously and it saddens me deeply that we did not come through on this within a reasonable timeframe.
The Sc2 e-sports scene always felt like something, that was pushed on me and heavily marketed by the according industry. And it still feels to me that way. I can understand your frustration about that fact as i felt similar, but perhaps you are projecting to much of it on this Pizza incident. I like that Nazgul comments on this matter and seems to care, but then again TL headquarters could have cared earlier, when the problem arose. I dunno, supporting E-Sports with pizza is like drinking beer to safe the rainforest anyway, the idea sounds kind of .. wrong.
What we all can do, if we love our game (and mine isn't Sc2) is: hype the events that happen, show our support to players and organizers and make stuff happen ourselves.
Fairly sure this thread is killing the idea of what this is. I know at least that if I was buying into this, even as I do enjoy papa johns sometimes, I probably wouldn't want to fund this project after reading these comments... Seems like a transformation is happening on TL.. worrying.
However i'm not sure it costs thirteen cents for the ingredients of a pizza. Idk, while i'm well versed in pizza statistics. I'm not up to par on pizza science/cost .
Well i'm not eating a lot of pizza anymore..... The science of its ingredients are disturbing (but that is with every modern food.)
Eh i still use the code and order pizza for friends or something.

Also their pizza is cheaper, tastier, healthier and more genuine than any of these pizza franchises.
It's honestly pretty hard to argue with this. I mean I love TL, and if I'm being honest I'll probably buy a pizza for the cause just so I can say I did...
But man last time seemed pretty brutal, and I really can't blame people for saying they won't fall for that again. I'm kind of surprised that instead of apologizing first they just try to do the same thing again. I'm glad Nazgul has written his piece now, that helps, but it just feels like damage control more than anything.
Just ordered Papa John's pizza in Huntington Beach for the office. I support 50% off pizza coupons, and SC2, nothing more to say. Gotta love that butter sauce.
People are a little grumpy about this and rightfully so. As much as I love Naz his explanation is a little weak. It's reasonable to be a bit annoyed by that.
But keep some perspective on this. Maybe don't shit all over it, even if you don't like how the first one went. Not because you don't think the communtiy was wronged, but because of the positives it brings.
I think the problem is not just that some stuff wasn't delivered. It was also that a lot of it was very late. But forget that. The last one was sold as a test project for papajohn to really invest into the scene. Now they are back with the EXACT same thing, except it's less. We've arrived??!?
#brokenPromises 1.5? I don't know about this... I wouldn't call last time a success; I took months to get the strechgoals, and I can remember countless reddit posts and general drama surrounding this.

It was a success for the parties involved. Not necessarily the customers/fans

Oh please. I'll never understand why some people seem to worship junk food. There's soemthing disturbing when you start to refer to junk food to affectionate nicknames. I love the way you also felt the need to write that you go for long runs, when for truly satisfying foods, you wouldn't need to. Saying a food is satisfying when you are hungry isn't exactly a stellar endorsement you think it is. Anyways i better leave before I get accused ofhurting esports(tm) or something.

What it's just bread and cheese with a sweet tomato sauce. I think it's funny how high calorie foods are abused by people who shouldn't be eating so much and then the food gets blamed. Bread and cheese is junk food now? Or the sauce is gonna kill you because they add sugar? If you're active then it's not a problem. You've got it all wrong if you think that exercise is some inconvenient prerequisite for enjoying a papa. Exercise is something you should be doing anyway for a million benefits. I commented because I know a lot of gamers are both inactive and overeaters, which are two detriments to enjoying a papa, so I shared my experience. There are some meals better suited for eating after exercising. It's true that even the simplest and least remarkable foods become a great pleasure to eat the hungrier you are but I never referred to hunger. I have been lucky enough to eat more excellent meals than most people get to enjoy, but I still like simpler foods too, the same way you'll hear about a lot of chefs feeding themselves "low quality" food for most meals, despite knowing and having access to high quality food.

You haven't done a good job of defining junk food with these statements.
I'm sure Nony is right that if you are active then eating pizza isn't going to be bad for you, also people who do distance running need to replace those carbs and i'm sure pizza is good for that. Personally I do shorter distances at higher intensity and various weight training so my diet is fairly low carb higher on protein therefore I wouldn't go and eat pizza after a workout.
Speaking of papa johns specifically, Maybe it is good in the USA but it was absolutely awful when I had it. I generally don't like takeaway / processed stuff and although papa claims it uses fresh ingredients the pizza I had was just grease filled and stale.
the papa johns thing was so cool r ppl seriously complaining ugh
umad ubad u sad
i think the second time around they'll be better prepared to deliver on all the tiers. if they're not, then they're only shooting themselves in the foot with sponsors. win win win really

They make some really fucking terrible Pizza in Italy. They also make some good stuff. They also make some better stuff here.
Papa John's isn't great, but it's not particularly unhealthy ingredients. Chances are the people talking mad shit on how horrible pizza is for you ate something less healthy for their most recent meal.
I ordered a Hawaiian yesterday and it was pretty good. I'm not a native so I'm asking if there's a trademark pizza for Papa John's? Also can you get the delivery for free if you order enough pizzas?

Leave it to the Americans to make food that actually tastes good. And it's not junk food.
that looks delicious, looks like 800 degrees which is a make-your-own pizza place in the us. the cheese looks different because it's fresh mozzarella and not shredded/grated

Where did you have it? I've had the same experience in Vancouver every time I get it. Greasy to the max

Honestly, people from the US saying that Italian's pizza is terrible sound very silly It's like if I (italian) would say that US hamburgers are terrible and we have much better in Italy.. you know it's just not true :D

But it very well might be. We have some truly awful hamburgers at places here. And, when I got a Philly cheese steak in philly, it was nowhere near as good as what's made in Utah. There's nothing magical about being in a place that something was made that makes you make that thing better. Now that's silly.

The 'magic' comes from the fact that you have been doing that particular recipe for many many years more than anyone else and maybe even invented it so you are naturally better at preparing it
Of course there are terrible pizza in Italy and bad hamburgers in the us, I was talking about the 'on average'.... Exceptions are always there but usually you don't base a judgement on them
I think every american Starcraft player should buy two extra pizzas for every European and Asian who cant do so. Well, and a tiny one for every Aussie player as well.
