GSL Code A 2016 qualifiers completed today and it was as action packed as ever. Many players came out to try and compete for the 25 spots on offer, notably a couple of foreigners turned up in NoRegreT and Scarlett, sadly they did not make it, with NoRegreT falling in the special Wild Card match. That was won by our long lost Protoss President MC!
Here are your Code A players for Season 2, they are separated into previous Code S and Qualifiers.
I'm so happy for MC, he was fought more series than any other players to qualify for his Code A spot. This is his last tournament and he's still wrecking nerds, now if he can advance far into this tourney (prerably winning it all), it would made such a beautiful story to tell
We had Zest vs Maru last season remember. This is the brutal reality that is Korean sc2 right now. Inno could be a whole 12 months without playing in Code S if he fails to negotiate Dark, as this will be the (or is due to be) the last GSL of 2016

There's a difference though. Maru and Zest ended up being matched because of seeding. Maru was 1st in his group, Zest 2nd in his, and that's just how it came about.
sOs vs Trap doesn't look like there's seeding at all. Trap was 9-12th last season, he shouldn't get someone who finished 1st in their group. Same with INnoVation vs Dark.
What we have right now looks like it's completely arbitrary.
23 players from code s and 25 from qualifiers? Is it because Bbyong is out of code S now? Does it mean 2 player from qualifier will play against each other?

I always missed the bracket + up and down format in Code A, because there were more matches, more players and fairer seeding, but now I'm seriously annoyed at it because of the SKT (and JA) teamkill

Also surprised. 3 out of 7 matches we know are teamkills. Teamkills used to almost never happen in Code A.
Code A is getting worse and worse, it's just killing strong players on the spot... While Stork and HerO get a free Code S spot (vs Ragnarok and Pet...) sOs, Trap, Inno, Dark and surely more to come find themselves in realistic RO16/8 matches...
Somehow I get the feeling that half the Code A matches will be more interesting than most of RO32 in Code S...

None of those were Code S last season though so i think it is fair on paper? On paper 2 people from Code A qualifiers are facing eachother, if Maru got that kind of draw i am going to be very happy. It's a free win for Dark though with how poor Inno is, i mean he lost to a Dinosaur

INnoVation vs Stork was supposed to be a free win for INno, who would have thought that he almost got 3-0 by Stork.
With INno being in terrible form right now, someone with his skill would have been "fair" to get match with Dark, but he's THE Machine and it's a teamkill so I feel like that's mainly the reason why we're rioting.
However, I do want the Code A Group Stage back, this format is silly and with only 2 seasons a year, a lot of players will be missing out and that's totally not good for the scene

On paper, what would be fair is that people who do better in the qualifiers (1st place in a group) and the ones who did well in Code S avoid the (on paper) hardest draws for Code A. As an example:
Trap vs sOs - Trap was 9-12th in Code S last season - sOs won his qualifier group over Pet
HerO vs Pet - HerO was 25th-32nd in Code S last season - Pet got 2nd in his qualifier group after losing to sOs
These matches, on paper, are not fair for Trap or sOs, but hugely advantageous for HerO and Pet.

Can very well happen. RagnaroK could beat Stork too, I guess, but his ZvP is a complete dud.

There are many ways they could avoid this kind of draw... They could rank players based on their proleague record or aligulac rating but they prefer to randomize and they end up with more viewers in code a than in code s lol

Maybe, but he can get good practice in. RagnaroK beat Hurricane in the qualifier today, and we all know Hurricane coached Stork through his last Code A match already.

Rating by Proleague disadvantages all players who don't play on Proleague teams or don't get fielded often. Ranking by Aligulac benefits all online heroes. Makes more sense to rate by GSL.

HerO PvZ looked flashy as hell in Code S last time round, could be fun if he gets a full Bo5 to prep for.

Thing is INno can very well beat him cause Dark is not protoss and his ZvT is not stellar.
Anyway, as much as it sucks to have them facing off in code A, it's totally INno's fault, he shouldn't have lost to Stork in the first place...
And Dark, well... loosing to Losira was not a good idea either...

So getting to Code S should not mean you get an easier opponent over someone who did not qualify for Code S? You are using a bad example there as the HerO vs Pet analogy is what it should be. 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd is how play off systems work in league format and that is about as wide of the gap as you can get from Code S > Code A.
Maybe you should see Code A 2nd vs Top Code S and Code A firsts vs Bottom Code S i don't know it just an unlucky drawing. I mean the qualifier groups for GSL and S2SL from scratch in December were horrible enough and that was complete random.
well, there's one JA terran that's gonna get a reality check and realize that it's not a PL and lose in a most spectacular fashion... and it will be glorious

interesting part and honnestly considering the level of play we're seeing in Proleague, most of them should be sick.
These draws seems such bullshit, really don't like all the teamkills. So much more than skill that effects those, it sucks. Just really really hope Maru, Rogue, TRUE, Departure, Bomber, Creator and DRG makes it through.

Yep but what would be another fair, honest choice? dual elimination groups? Does Afreeca has enough money to spend on something like this?
IMHO, not allowing team kills would be unfair to players from lesser teams or with no teams at all, and seeding according to reputation wouldn't be fair either, for instance INno totally failed last season, it's reasonable that he's seeded against a strong player....

How is he punished he had to play 1 of the players from Code S. He could of got Rogue/aLive/Classic/MyuNgSiK/soO/Solar/Trap/Dark. Can't prevent Innovation from not playing a good player when 1/3 of the players he could hit were good.
Trap vs. sOs teamkill is seriously sad. Inno vs. Dark just stupid. Leenock vs. Stats nonsence.
Bad luck for Reality - a TvT with Maru. Big hope for MC - please, beat Journey and get second in your group in the first Code S phase! I just want to see you in the group selection process!
Why don't they match highest ranking in WCS point with lowest ranking etc. ? Many tournament formats do that instead of random drafts. This avoids 2 mediocre players against each other resulting in someone getting an undeserved spot, and two extraordinary players against each other resulting in an undeserved elimination.

You guys do realize Maru/Innovation/sOs have no WCS Points that would just mean more of them would have to play Solar/Dark/soO/Stats anyways D:

Agreed. I miss Code A as a group stage so much. The draws for this Code A are so brutal and so many team kills. I think the players who made it through group stages better represented the best players in Korea.
I think we got the wrong HERO here. It should be HerO (Song Hyeon Deok, former Liquid'HerO) playing against Pet instead of CJ herO (Kim Joon Ho). CJ herO finished top 8, should be auto seeded into Code S.
Really? Innovation vs Dark? Really?? sOs vs Trap???
I mean, c'mon guys. Those are four of the best players in the list! They should just rig the matchups and brackets so that the seeds/matchups actually make sense instead of having some of your best players eliminate each other in Code A...............
Edit: Perhaps Innovation isn't looking that sharp right now. He lost to Dear and jjakji 2-1 each for SSL qualifiers... Oh well.
I wonder how WCS Spring Champinship is going to compete with the excitement and hype of continually F5-ing and watching Wolf's periscope of the GSL code A qualifiers.

Can you link to it? Wanna watch
The VOD was auto-deleted after 12 hours, so you gotta hope someone saved it somewhere else on the interwebz.
Dunno why so many people are complaining about Inno vs Dark or sOs vs Trap. Inno is hardly the beast he was in HotS, and sOs is even worse than Inno atm.
