StarCraft 2 is a challenging game. The complexity of the game is one of the major barriers for players to improve. Knowing what to build and when is one of the most important things to learn if you want to climb the ladder. The most common way build cut through the complexity of the game early on is following a build order and having a well refined build order can easily propel you into Masters/high Diamond. During Wings of Liberty builds used to be in abundance and relatively simple - who doesn't remember the Korean 4Gate? or 5rax reaper? or the 1-1-1? or the 7 roach rush? Executing these simple strategies propelled people up the ladder and even into major tournaments (hi bitbybit!).
We're well past the WoL era, and the changes made in LotV have radically increased the complexity of builds and the quantity and quality of available builds has disappeared. Indeed, FireCakerecently lamented that
"Let’s imagine you are just starting SC2. First you will be a bit lost and what you will want to do is to find some content about how to play, what are the main strategies, what are you doing wrong, why are you losing? Etc… Then try to Google “SC2 legacy of the void tutorial”, try to find resources on the internet, you will find nothing. Maybe if you are lucky you will find HOTS/WOL build orders that will be of no use for you. You just cannot learn the game by looking for help on the internet."
TL Strategy has long been a bastion of reliable SC2 knowledge, and it's about time we started rebuilding a reliable collection of builds for LotV. To do this, we've partnered with some of the best in the business to bring you (i) reliable strategies that you can put into practice on the ladder; (ii) a better practice experience so you can quickly learn new strategies and improve faster.
Who better to turn to for high quality builds than PiG. His dailies have become the definitive authority of SC2 strategy. We're teaming up with Jared to turn his build order-centric dailies in an easily readable, digestible form. This will give you a quick reference point to reinforce your knowledge before heading off into game, or provide you an introduction to the build before you go away and watch PiG explain the build in detail in his daily.
But we're not stopping there. Up until recently, the only way to memorise a build was to jump into a custom and grind out games (possibly using SALT or some variant) or be Artosis and carry a notebook full of build orders around. The folks over at spawningtool have been an indispensable resource for sharing builds over the years, and they've taken the next step to produce an app on the Overwolf platform to make learning new builds a breeze. The Spawning Tool Build Advisor app directly overlays a build you choose into your game of StarCraft 2 and walks you through the build from the start of the game.
Every build that we feature will have a corresponding build order available within the Spawning Tool app so that you can jump straight into game and get playing. You can expect to see the first of PiG's content coming through next week, but for now we wanted to introduce you to the Spawning Tool app and show off what it can offer you in game.
How to get the Spawning Tool App:
To use Spawning Tool, first you must download Overwolf found here. Following that, you can either search for the spawning tool app through Overwolf, or follow this link. Now that you have Spawning Tool, let’s walkthrough the build on how to use it.
Using Spawning Tool:
The build hub
After starting StarCraft 2 and having Overwolf launched in the background, this overlay will pop up over your menu (which can be toggled with control + Q). This is the hub for builds in Spawning Tool; every build entered into the app will be searched through here. In here, you have multiple search parameters:
Search by matchup: You can select both your and your opponent’s race to narrow down the initial list of builds
Sort by: This is a drop down menu with the options Hot, Top, New, Alphabetical. Each one does as their name implies
Type: Another drop down menu with the options All, Cheese, All-in, Timing Attack, Economic. These will further refine your search with more precise strategy for the build you are looking for.
If these are not enough to satiate your thirst for builds, there is also a search bar that works in tandem with all previous search criteria. In here you can input keywords such as professional players and units.
Selecting a build:
Selecting a build is quite simple, just click on a build that piqued your interest, and the build information will pop up. This screen includes the description of the build, the build order, and an analysis of the build. To activate the build, click the Pick Build! button next to the description, and another new window will pop up. To get out, simply click the back button next to the title of the build.
Using the build:
The build tab
Now that we’ve selected a build, it’s time to hop in game and try it out! While the build is picked, launch a game and when the game starts, the build will also synchronously start with the game timer. As the game goes on, the build will automatically scroll down through itself to continue the build. In case of falling behind, you can simply pause the build until you catch back up. There is also an option to lock the tab in place, so you can move it to a convenient place on screen and lock it there.
And that’s it! Previously it was much harder to follow builds in game, but now with this tool you’ll be able to breeze through a build while not losing focus on the action in front of you. There are constantly new builds being created through Spawning Tool, have fun exploring all of them!
Brought to you by the TL Strategy Team in collaboration with Overwolf and Spawning Tool.
As far as i know this tool has been out for awhile now, & according to what i just read, the only thing that appears new about it is that it will now be featured on teamliquid? I 1st learned of this tool on teamliquid weeks ago, but now it has a cool new label on it of 'partnered with teamliquid'. Cool. Hope it helps new players

We'll be putting out regular content which will get featured in the app we hope it helps new players, old players looking to get back into the swing of things, or even just current players looking to learn the other races.

I am wondering though, what is Pig's part in the partnership? Is it feeding the app with builds?
He is going to be incorporating the app into his content to further help new players understand builds and have a resource to go find the exact build he's using.

Our content will closely follow what Pig is doing. So if he does a show featuring a certain build, we'll have follow up article about that build and integration with spawning tool.
This is some exciting stuff. Hopefully this will help out many new and returning players, like myself, adjust to all these crazy LotV build orders and timings ^^ A round of applause to all those involved in this initiative!
I've used the overwolf platform for hearthstone and just poked around with spawningtool - this may help me get back into playing StarCraft more regularly!
Congratulations! It's great to see PiG get some collaborating going with TL.
Did you guys enjoy working with Overwolf? They approached me about doing similar with Hero Builds but didn't see it as valuable to me as it is for them.
Looks very similar to the Hero guides from Dota 2 Steam Workshop
I like this because it still favors the person that understands the context of builds. If you don't know the build, this will simply be something that distracts you from the mini-map and the game itself. I think this is going to be a very fair and useful tool for newcomers!
Love the overlay, started using it just last week actually (found it in some other post on reddit) and love it much more than SALT. I'd be really interested in contributing to the development, can anyone comment on whether the overwolf app is open-source or if community development is desired? I see a lot of potential for other build orders/ learning styles to be supported.

The app isn't open source, but we're definitely open to talking to potential collaborators. PM me and we can talk more specifics.

Hit me up if you need Zerg builds :D
oh my god, Dario-approved Zerg builds? that sounds amazing
I visited the overwolf offices once for a job interview. They have a pretty cool operation going on, the management are nice people and gamers at heart, and they seemed very interested in SC2. I wanna see where this goes.
On January 10 2017 05:46 Liquid`TLO wrote: How do I create a build for it?
You can create and publish builds from our website http://lotv.spawningtool.com/build/ . They will automatically be published in the overwolf overlay as well.
It can be a bit laborious to put in all of the steps, times, and supplies, so if you have replays, you can also upload those and then use the "copy this build" button to automatically extract those.
Let us know if you have any difficulty with it! I'm sure many Zerg players out there would love to see and follow your builds.
you saved my life with this! i played hots alot but didnt play for like a year . bought lotv last week played one game and was soo lost because i couldnt build my depot on 11 :D i needed something like this badly! thanks alot
Really nice work, LOTV really need and deserve this kind of things, it's the hardest expansion and this will hepl him to a lot more user friendly. Also the number of viewvers is slighty increased, hope this will be a great year for sc2!

However I did stop using it because as a random player I am unable to start a build fast enough after the start of the match consistently and would miss the "grace period" or whatever it is for syncing up with the in-game clock. I was unable to use the tool on ~75% of my games unless I spam clicked the filters before building a worker and got the selection confirmed in time.
Will there be any grace time extensions or plans for random players to be able to utilize this app?

If i understand it correctly, you choose the build in the app, and when the game starts, you activate the overlay. I might be wrong though. I have only used it once.
I've been using this overlay for some time. However, you cannot just select any replay you upload, only the listed 'build orders'. This means most of the builds are already outdated, which is the same problem in the first place....
Basically the spawning tool overlay needs a way to select any replay that's been uploaded to lotv.spawningtool.com.
Once it has that this will be VERY useful, until then not so much sadly.
I just played 8 games with it. It didnt feel satisfying there are too many things not working.
My first impression was quite good it looked nice and very clean which is important. So i Downloaded it, then i noticed it comes with a hole other set of features (Overwolf) which i am not intrested in at all. Well not a big deal. So i found the Spawning Tool Build Advisor in the Overwolf platform. Opend it and made a test game vs ai. I think the Build Order display works very well. But i noticed that skipped steps dont get marked, when you are beeing pushed forward with gametime as it should be. The Salt mod from Turtle has a good way of marking it. I hope you can get enought information from the game to do this.
Before the first real game i noted which BO i wanted to play in what MU. In the loading screen i noticed issues with the overlay not reacting or reacting with big dealy. When the game started i was able to choose the build with less delay. Playing was just fine. Making the overlay smaller/transparent would be nice. But when the build was finshed and the overlay started over again, i noticed a big spike. So then i closed the build overlay this lead to another spike. Probably not network but i didnt have the sc2 stats on.
In the next load screen when i tried to choose my next build a 30 second video ad played. This lead to me lagging the first few seconds after the game started because my connection is shit.... You can "skip" this ad by choosing your build faster but i still had reading to do. I had trouble finding a good spot for the overlay. Small hint dont "stick" it to the border you will not be able to side scroll. while throwing it around it a bit i noticed corresponding spikes/fps drops . So just let it be dont touch it and it will work just fine. But dont be too exited most build are really inconsistent in the beginning they might display scvs but will randomly stop displaying them even when they are still "part" of the build. The spawning tool build orders are just a rough outline sometimes to rough to play them without understanding how the build will work. Sadly not noob frendly at all (at the moment). I think it will be hard to create a usefull standart that people will stick to. Beeing able to get the exact build Order out of a pro Replay would fix this issue. I tried 8 builds 3 of them were "playable" at masters level but had me making bad mistakes because they where inconsistent. And the other 5 were straight up to old/bad to be usefull. You can import Replays to Salt encoding it has to give a way to do it here too.
TLDR:
Looks nice and works somewhat but comes with 3rd party platform. Has "minor" fps and crash/restart issues. Overlay blocks big part of visible screen Most available build orders are not complete, well thought out or consistent. There is a dire need for more information about how to use your stuff to make a bo playable on the first go. No replay import, or saving of a build order implemented.

been out for months. tried it when first released didnt like it much. might be better now, bit buggy back then.
This sounds really promising. I think a lot of problems for new players in RTS is that a lot of the variety in effective strategies of how you approach every game isnt as blatant as like, picking a certain hero or a going a certain item build.

How long does it take until a replay shows up that you uploaded?
Thanks for taking part in this, will check it out.

Haha no problem, btw I noticed that when you click on an link in the description it opens up in your app but there's no way to return to the app. I just got stuck on imgur. I think being able to add pictures is pretty important
I would also recommend the ''hot'' tab to the default one rather than the ''top'' one. There's no real use seeing the top of all time builds again and again.

Aah thanks, I somehow read that it was just selected builds shown there. Then it's going to be awesome. Especially with players like TLO contributing :D
Holy shit, this looks REALLY SWELL! Exactly what I was missing trying to get back into actually playing StarCraft - no up-to-date builds to be found anywhere! And I guess this is slightly better than my trusty post-it-with-build-on-side-of-monitor too...

Good question. We're looking into some ways to smooth over the build picking process for any case where you don't know the matchup before the game starts (e.g. playing random, ladder games where your opponents race is shown on the load screen, etc.). We'll keep that in mind!

Yeah, we have partitioned the content between the replays and build orders. In our testing, we found that taking a build order straight from a replay was actually not a very good experience: there are a ton of workers at various steps, the "build" goes on much longer than the core of the game, etc. As such, we limited it to just the published build orders. However, we tried to make it as easy as possible to make a build order from a replay with the "Export as new Build Order" button, which does all the heavy-lifting of getting the steps in. From there, you can clean up the build into something publishable.

but overall could be a good starting point.
Appreciate the detailed feedback. A few responses:
1. the poor response on the loading screen is out of our control. Your computer is working really hard to load game content into memory and initialize game state so that the game will start as fast as possible, so everything on your computer is slow during that time (at least until you are done loading and are just waiting for your opponent) 2. we're definitely counting on the community to make sure that there are high quality build orders on the site, so if you find it hard to follow any of them, definitely leave comments on the build on the website at http://lotv.spawningtool.com/build/ and hopefully that will be addressed!
Thanks for taking part in this, will check it out.

Thanks for posting the build! Noted the issue with the link. Also agreed on swapping the default sort order. We're excited to see so many people posting current builds, so we should see high quality builds come through there.
Thanks everyone for the enthusiasm and feedback. We definitely have a lot of work ahead to continue to make this work better for you, so please continue to send along any comments here, to me, or Morn_sc, and we will try to make something awesome!
So has anyone perceived any performance dips with this running? If so, how significant? I value my FPS greatly but this is very useful for when practicing a new style/build.

Hey, my name is Asaf, from the Overwolf team. You can open the Overwolf dock and click on the little wrench icon to get into the settings. Then look for the "Hotkeys" tab, you'll be able to change the SpawningTool hotkeys there. I hope it helps!
This is actually something that could have helped bring in new players a while ago...I'm not 100% sure I'll prefer having that much of the screen taken up but this is definitely an awesome tool. Particularly for beginners or people jumping back in.

When you just play ladder nobody really cares, in torunaments it would be a problem, and for learning builds an empty Custom is way better EDIT: ladder games are way to stressful, and like any other Sport, focus on one thing at a time
hello what I haven't liked about the SALT tool really is just the fact I can't add steps like ''swap barracks on reactor'' or ''send scouting SCV'' or ''push out now'' etc. so many things that seem important to me but that I just can't implement. Will this tool fix that?
On January 13 2017 21:25 Trizztein wrote: hello what I haven't liked about the SALT tool really is just the fact I can't add steps like ''swap barracks on reactor'' or ''send scouting SCV'' or ''push out now'' etc. so many things that seem important to me but that I just can't implement. Good point. We will integrate that into the app. On the website, you can add a "unit" into your build order called "Action" and then put notes out to the right (for example, see http://lotv.spawningtool.com/build/42702/ ). We haven't put the notes into the overwolf overlay yet, but we can definitely do that.
Is there anyway to change the hotkey to pause the build order from F6 to something else? The only hotkey options in the settings I get is to change "show spawning tool" and "lock spawning tool miniwindow".
I think the build shouldn't follow the timer as well but the supply instead, right now for example if you have to pull a worker to stop a probe killing your scv you fall behind by like 5 seconds and then it snowballs and you're miles behind the build. Maybe add an option to either follow supply or timer if that is possible?
Also is there anyway to make it so you can adjust the size of the window with the build in? My monitor is 2560 x 1440 and the text is pretty small.
Overall though it has a lot of potential I think, will be using it more!
Wow, I have played sc2 in years and have been reluctant to start up because of the work of learning new build orders. Now I think I'll pick it back up.

I think the build shouldn't follow the timer as well but the supply instead, right now for example if you have to pull a worker to stop a probe killing your scv you fall behind by like 5 seconds and then it snowballs and you're miles behind the build. Maybe add an option to either follow supply or timer if that is possible?

Thanks for the feedback. A few responses on this:
1. Definitely will look into the hotkeys. We have gotten a lot of feedback about this, so we will improve the experience with that 2. Unfortunately, it's tricky to follow supply counts. That would require that we be inspecting the state of the game more continuously (instead of just detecting the start of the game), and that gets into a slippery slope. Also, in your example, if you were to lose a SCV, then all of the supply counts would be off by 1 anyways. 3. Others have mentioned the screen size as well, and we will look into it. There's a bit of a balancing act between making it visible and also not covering up too much of the game itself, but hopefully we will come to a good balance.
Thanks again for trying it out and providing feedback!
This doesn't seem to be working for it as the spawning tool app keeps disappearing into the background when I launch SC2. Also, the game timer on the spawning pool app doesn't start when the game has been started.
what I did from time to time is to load the spawning tool builds into salt, played the build and while i played it I recorded the audio from the game. Salt can announce the build order from spawning tool. So I was able to simultaneusly start the audio file with the game and have the build on ear while not beeing distracted with my eyes... awesome, but a lot of preparation for just one build.
Since a few days ago, the synchronized game timer doesnt work. I can only start it with F6. Any one else experiencing the same problem? Or even better, has a solution?

Oops, definitely missed this. we just shipped a fix for it last week, so make sure you are up-to-date with both your Overwolf and Build Advisor app. hopefully that works for you

Currently no, but we're planning to get that marked soon in the app with our next iteration. Though now that I think about it, we could probably put that on the website now. Good idea!
