With only a week left in the the Round of 32, Trap, Trust, as well as BlizzCon 2016 finalists Dark and ByuN, met to see who would snatch up the next two coveted spots in the the Round of 16.
Initial match 1: Dark took a 1-0 lead with a quick roach/ling all in, but took a bit longer to wrap up the series. Roach aggression put him at a supply deficit on Abyssal Reef, but Dark transitioned to lurkers which dismantled Trust's stalkers and colossi.
Initial match 2: Having gone down 1-0 to proxied void rays and tempest on Catalyst, ByuN canceled Trap's third in game two. Trap responded with phoenix/zealot, adding in archons and immortals as he built a lead. Up more than 30 supply, he crashed into ByuN one last time to take the match.
Winners' match: Trap’s tempest play took game one, but Dark evened the series with a flood of hydra/bane in game two. Trap planted a bunch of shield batteries outside Dark's natural in game three, but his adepts were eventually overrun Dark’s zerglings, queens and spines, sending him to the Round of 16.
Losers' match: ByuN moved on to the final match with a quick 2-0 over Trust. Early harasssment set up a marine/tank push which ended game one. Game two went a bit longer, with Trust getting to three bases, but ByuN set up a familiar siege on Abyssal Reef, setting up a rematch with Trap.
Decider match: ByuN pressed the issue on Blackpink, but Trap defended expertly while harassing with zealots to take a 1-0 lead. ByuN’s aggressiveness continued in game two, but Trap held before counterattacking with blink and charge to earn a spot in the Round of 16.
Dark and Trap advance to the Ro16.
Next match: Saturday, Jan 27 4:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Group G: Stats, Impact, jjakji, Classic

Awesome strategies by trap.

To Team Liquid Staff:
Would it be possible to announce results the NEXT day ?
Give some us some time to watch the VOD without it being spoiled as soon as you visit Team Liquid.
Thanks for considering.

You have to be logged in ? Which means when I first come here I will see it anyway (as I dont do Auto-login, I do it manually if Im gunna post) ?

At least Parcelleus is willing to figure out how the spoiler box works/why it isn't working for him. Looks like some functionality updating might be in need, default for non-logged-in is spoiler free perhaps?
Way better than the other comments I've seen that stare at the spoiler box and complain about spoilers anyways

Traps play, especially his army splitting, was amazing.

The link to Liquidpedia in the top of the article doesn't seem to be working. Otherwise, thanks for the recap!

Trap played very well. Glad he made it out.

Yeah you can't say Trap didn't deserve it. Game 1 of decider's match was a sight to behold. Sad for ByuN though.

Great, great games today. So much tension and action. Trap played really well

Byun is out in the Ro32 again, lol. Blizzcon curse confirmed, no Blizzcon champion can make it past the Ro32 of the first season

Really happy that Trap made it after Bunny fell short. Impact's chances are looking good for next group too.

Yea the spoiler timing, even for somone who has been going to teamliquid for years, is super annoying.
I kind of just pop on teamliquid as part of a morning routine, but of course am not logged in 100% of the time, so if I ever forget that a GSL group happened the night before, its spoiled.
This happens every thread because its poor design. If you have to tell your users that they are doing it wrong every thread, than it's probably not the User's fault.
Just have the spoiler tag be opt out for the first week after an event has happened and youll reduce a lot of grief. Unlike most sports, knowing the result of a match seriously ruins the watching experience, as you know how a specific build is going to work out in the end before it happens, which takes away a lot of the entertainment

you can turn off spoilers on the front page it's below the news article carousel! I just tried that for fun (as I don't need it), and it doesn't work where I'm watching for news. The left side bar doesn't get spoilers, only the Community News at front page (where I never look).
edit: NVM now it somehow works, lol.

Has there been a GSL recap without someone posting about spoilers?
I am with nick00bot on this. The spoiler system has a poor design. My suggestion is to have titles without spoilers. A spoiler free title could be "GSL group F recap" instead of "Dark and Trap survive Group F, ByuN out in Ro32". Spoiler free titles in tandem with the current spoiler system would help a lot.

Sadly i must say ....Byun is a patch terran......

As soon as 3rax-reaper got patched out of being an auto-win, he was done for. 3rax-reaper can win you Blizzcon on a very specific patch, just as BL-infestor could back in WOL.

Fewer people read the recaps if they have spoiler free titles.

I doubt that the difference of fewer people reading the recaps is that large if the title would be just "GSL Group F Recap."
When I get the result spoiled accidentally, I don't watch the VOD anymore and just click to read the recap. So chunk of the people who read the recap and wouldn't read it otherwise, are the ones who are upset by it being spoiled, so that is not kosher.
Also, there must be chunk of people who do not watch the games and are more likely to open the recap if it said just "GSL Group F Recap." to find out the results. If someone is just trying to find what happened, now they can go to TL, see the result, and not open the recap.

Omg Trap is so good! Rock solid performance
|
Yes, that was one of the most beautiful and effective splitts done by Trap indeed. I haven't seen such a pleasant and surprising performance for a damn long time. Initially I was prepared to watch just the group of Dark and everything went to normal. But Trap really astonished me with his play, bit of risky at some moments, but really full with ideas just like sOs can do it too. This was definately one of the most interesting groups in this round of 32. Of course I am happy for Dark most of all. Byun played well, but he was I think predictable. All you had to do is to perform some solid defence and no panic. Most of the successful players change their styles at some important moments in order to be more flexible. Even Innovation did it last year with some different builds. Byun really need some change. I wish him luck. I will miss his charisma in this Code S but Trap really deserve it so well.

Or bad player confirmed? His last years form and now this performance also doesnt help the argument hes not a patch terran. Everyon considered Trap the underdog, but the underdog simply outplayed him and deserved the win. Why is it so hard to acknowledge that ?

The arguable "necessity" for clickbait makes sense in the general context of the internet but you'd be hard pressed to argue the same on a niche, specialist site for dedicated fans.

Why is it so hard to acknowledge that ? Well, calling Byun a bad player is really stretching it, since he was about as successful as Maru/aLive were last year. To call Byun bad in 2017 would basically be saying that the only good Terrans were Inno and TY. If Byun is a bad player, then Trap is a terrible one, because Byun had far better results than Trap did last year.
Calling Byun a patchterran is equivalent to calling Rogue a patchzerg–there is a somewhat-legitimate argument to be made, but it's far from bulletproof.
And as far as "Trap simply outplayed Byun" goes, since PvT is so heavily Protoss-favored at the moment, a lot of people think that balance played a part in their match. Personally I think Trap played quite well and Byun was too predictable, but the current strength of Protoss against Terran can't be ignored either.

By that judgement Trap looks even better against Dark, as ZvP is MUCH more zerg favored than PvT is protoss at the moment. But even then, Trap simply and completely outplayed Byun. Byun had literally one game well played map (by the standards we expect out of him) in those 4 games, and even then, Trap was just simply too crisp from start to finish.
- Random peanut gallery comments on player standings:
Also Trap had basically identical WCS points from GSL as aLive did last year. Trap was the highest ranked player to get literally nothing from other WCS Korea tournaments. But certainly Byun isn't bad, and Trap is rather recently ascendant.
I don't think it is wrong to say that TY and Innovation were lapping other Korean Terrans last year, and I'd put Byun, Gumiho, and Special (maybe aLive) in that second tier.
Frankly speaking if you want to talk about a Terran that fell off the face of the earth in the 2nd half of 2017 and has yet to recover, I'd point that finger at Maru. Good showings at the first two GSL's mask a fairly bad ending to 2017 offline and online for someone that was considered one of the horsemen.

ByuN certainly isn't a bad player. He's still probably a top 6 or 7 terran right now. Trap was simply the better player. The balance patch wouldn't turn this 0-4 result into a win for ByuN here.
As far as being a patchterran, I think the argument is there. His results took a big drop when tankivacs/reapers were nerfed and banelings were given a hp buff. He clearly relied on those to win the tournaments he did. He went from being the best player in the world to not even top 10 because of a patch. While other terrans were consistantly succesful over the years (Inno, TY, Maru).
On another note, I wish there was a name for players that suceed because of a specific meta or bracket luck. Neeb and Gumiho aren't patchplayers but their big wins certainly seem unrepeatable.

If you look at results from korean events only, Maru had more WCS points than ByuN or even TY I think. He fell of towards the end of the year, but if you've seen any of the games from the IEM or WeSG qualifiers he's doing better than all the other terrans (outside Inno maybe?)

I've always felt that Trap is an underrate player. He's always been solid, but just haven't been able to convert that to multiple trophies. I still remember his clutch games back in the days of STX. Hoping he'll make it further this season of GSL to ro4
|
Obviously i don't think Byun is a bad player. But the bias and the overhype towards him is real.

I'm gonna say this again easiest solution to spoilers by TL is staff just posts NON SPOILER TITLES like: "RO32 results". no code changes required at all, low tech and easy. don't understand why they don't employ this simple and effective solution.
edit: and if for some reason they want a clickbait title to drive traffic to a specific thread (again don't see the point of this at all), they can post stuff like "YOU WONT BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED IN THE RO32 YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN". again though, pointless

The traffic argument is meaningless because this is a SC site to begin with. People will click when they are ready to see the results.

I agree 100%. Especially when there are no weekly previews and the time on the calendar is European time (a nuissance to calculate further than 2 days ahead).
