The wait is finally over for Scarlett. Nearly six years after she intrigued the StarCraft II world with her talent at IPL4, Canada's star Zerg finally won the first major championship of her career by defeating legendary Korean Protoss sOs in the finals of Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang. The result was an upset of the highest order: sOs was known as the ultimate big match player, having won some of the biggest tournaments in the history of StarCraft II with his brazen use of aggressive builds. On the other hand, Scarlett headed into the finals as a faded idol, a wildly popular player who had delivered just two runner-up finishes since 2012.
In a shocking case of role-reversal, Scarlett defeated sOs 4-1 with a combination of tricky strategies and unrelenting aggression. sOs seemed flustered as he struggled to cope with Scarlett's Zergling drops, Ravager timings, or even the common Hydralisk-Lurker combination knocking at his front door. Prevented from bringing any of his unusual strategies to the table, sOs' defense was only good enough to earn him a single consolation win. He was flattered to avoid a sweep.
After a flood of speedlings on Blackpink secured Scarlett the fourth and deciding GG, she walked over to her opponent for a customary handshake. Then, with minimal delay, she rushed to lift the trophy that had eluded her for years.
Heralded since 2012 as a "foreign hope" for a StarCraft scene long-dominated by Korean pros, Scarlett's career results lagged behind enormous expectations. At her best, she seemed just as good as the top competitors. She even went to Korea to train and learn in the ancestral home of competitive StarCraft. She could take games—even series—off championship caliber players. Yet, she could never string those wins together in a combination that could win her a trophy.
As time passed, Scarlett's form became more and more erratic. When Blizzard protected the non-Korean scene by separating it entirely from Korea's GSL, it should have been a golden opportunity for Korean-trained pros like Scarlett. Instead, it gave younger stars the opportunity to eclipse Scarlett's accomplishments. But her (considerably large) fanbase never wavered in their support. How could they? Not only was Scarlett skilled, but she had played some of the most exciting games of all time. She created moments that fans were willing to wait years for.
After it was all said and done, Scarlett saw her championship moment as a starting point, not a destination. In her post-finals interview, she mentioned her upcoming GSL round of 16 matches. She spoke of BlizzCon and her hopes to contend for StarCraft II's ultimate prize. Perhaps, for a progamer in the midst of a busy season, there is no time to sit and bask in the realization of one's dreams. But for StarCraft II fans, who have watched and waited for years—we might have that luxury.

Korean SC2 is getting sad, time to reverse the region lock.

Very happy that she won. I can t wait to see all the games to understand how she won, as the latest results did not suggets such a win.

That was well written! This win has indeed been a long time coming, it's amazing to finally see it happen against one of the very best Korean players at an event partnered with the Olympics and in PyeongChang, Korea no less. What a story.
This event was amazing all around, the games were great and Scarlett showing up with a performance like that after disappointing runs at WESG and WCS was a nice suprise.
The final was extremely entertaining imo, seeing sOs crumble under pressure, just as his opponents often do against him was crazy to see.
Everybody who watched Scarlett's stream recently knew exactly what was coming in game 3, I couldn't stop grinning in anticipation of that evo chamber going down. I was so sure it was gonna be 3-0 when I saw the map. sOs did well by taking another map, but Scarlett really was unstoppable overall in this event.
Congrats Scarlett, incredible performance and thanks to ESL for a great event. The production level was insane.

Great summary, most starcraft fans out there would aknowledge this is well deserved and totally overdue, she brings a lot to this game and I love her for it... congrats Scarlett... GG

Gg nice to see her finally taking a huge win after all this time. What a huge surprise waking up and seeing the headline "Scarlett defeats sOs 4-1, wins IEM PyeongChang!

Holy Jesus fucking Christ!!

Well done. Hopefully this will stop her balance whine.
|
It's quite interesting to see that both Scarlett and Special, who almost didn't get in thanks to scheduling conflict, both did so well, taking 1st and 3-4th. It's great that they've handled the NA qualifiers problems so well, those two really deserved to be there.
|
No one is talking about how she brutalized both Elazer and Serral on top or sOs? thats a hard gauntlet and she excelled.
|
And yet nobody mentioned 42 vs 58 PvZ balance? Even best korean protosses can't do anything vs zerg. But yet lets whine about PvT and stalkers.
In PvZ zerg have so strong mid game pushes, even Zest or sOs have hard time to stay alive against. Roaches, ravagers. hydras, lurkers, lings, banelings in any possible combination are hard to hold on 3 bases. 4th base or being on the map are impossible for protoss at all. Look at all these games, even Serral - Showtime series. Protoss need super precise defense to hold mid game zerg. If he failed even slightly he is dead. If he managed to do perfect and hard to execute defense, he is slightly behind.
Transition into late game isn't easy thing too. If too late - you are straight dead against brood lords. And in any given moment zerg can do another maxed hydra/lurker push, and kill you again. Not a surprise that on top of skill ladder zergs will beat protoss like 9 times out of 10, because skill difference needed to overcome such an advantage is impossible to reach.

Yeah PvZ balance seems to be very bad atm. Feel sorry for Zest and sOs for getting eliminated because of this matchup.

Vahvahvahvah. You forgot to say even girl cood win vs protos. So sad. Gg Scarlett. Good game.

Congratulations to Scarlett, well deserved and a long time coming.

Finally, so happy for Scarlett!

Crediting Scarlett’s victory only to balance is short sighted and way oversimplifies it. While it might have been a factor in her victory, it shouldn’t disqualify the fact that she played one hell of a series not to mention the 3 ZvZs she played through the tournament, which historically has been her weakness.
Note, a 58-42 balance should have resulted in roughly a 4-3 if players are perfectly equal and we determining winners purely from balance. So that doesn’t explain the 4-1.
|
Congrats, can't wait to see her whining about Protoss being broken again.
|
I watched it live. It was actually quite a stomp. The game sOs won was out of sheer will, micro, and unit efficiency (see: immortals blasting roaches, warp prisms). Otherwise, this series was a complete rollover. The Zergling breach on BlackPink reminded me quite a bit of the old school Leenock.

eeeh no, thats not how it works mate :D i said it before and i'll say it again, starcraft people really need to stop this pseudo math. idk where the 58 42 number comes from in the first place (latest aligulac number i could find is 54 46, still not that good, but people usually quote whichever statistic best fits their narrative anyway), but you cant simply apply that ratio to determine what outcome a BO7 is supposed to have from a balance point of view.

I said to myself "YES" when Scarlett won

confirmed Neeb vZ > sOs vZ and Zest vZ (and in Zest's case Neeb > Zest in anything) GOOD JOB SCARLETT Revenge against Korea for ASUS ROG 2013 Also NA > EU (Neeb and Scarlett all took golds on Korean Soil)

Numbers are come from Aligulac current (and previous) lists. Since 4.1.4 PvZ are 42v58.
How numbers turn into real results are far beyond my understanding. I can only speculate, that big numbers represents "standard game scenario" but in real life players may choose different strats, forced to play more aggressively/ defensively than "optimal" strategy required. I remember when terran had 55 advantage in HOTS protoss all 2 protosses in some premier's Ro8 brought earlier unseen colossus drop, therefor winning both series. It didn't deny terran advantage.

Congrats sooooooo much to Scarlett!!! I wish her first premier win could have been in front of a live audience though

I loved the production and commentary on this event, it felt really high-quality. I love sOs, but it was great to see Scarlett running circles around him. It feels like it's long overdue for her to be in the spotlight. (Also, for those balance whining: considering her run in this tournament, if you want to try to discredit her, it would probably make more sense to complain that ZvZ is imbalanced.)
|
good to see protoss also struggling against those zerg

I mean Neeb's wins last year aren't really relevant when we wanna talk about the best foreign player now though. The problem with scarlett is that she was basically afk for wcs, but this tournament win and the gsl result (possibly even making playoffs) is certainly impressive.

Congratz to Scarlett, good to see her win.
Not trying to take anything away from it, but why were only Zest and sOs in this as Koreans? Does it have to do with the qualifiers being before the recent patch? Great tourney, just wish a Korean Terran or Zerg was also in it.

So the spots were given due to a mix of playerbase and population of each region.

Zest and sOs aren't really the best examples of the korean elite (currently) though. Zest is not good (against zerg at least) right now, and sOs is capable of losing to anyone (e.g. when he won zero maps at nation wars)

Anybody able to shed some light on how to defend these ling allins? It felt like the ball was always in Scarlett's court, and I'm not sure what sOs should have done to defend. Would a non-stargate opener like gladepts have stompted it? Plus it seems like you really have to snipe the overlord else the zerg has too many attack avenue?
Asking since I'm sure I'm going to hit a bunch of ling allins and ling elevators on ladder and not sure how to stop it.

For starters, don’t use your entire chronoboost on a gateway not producing units

Haha, you're not wrong but I don't think that would have made the difference between a hold and non-hold. Maybe it's just a hard counter to sgate openers, don't think you have the production/dps to kill constant ling production
Would adding gateways and saccing main work? Are you too behind if you lose your main, even if all your production/tech are in nat? One could imagine Zest-style simcity w/ all buildings at nat if losing main is playable. It does seem unplayable to me, just throwing out a wild guess
|
Why "user warned for this post" on #18 ? He is totally right. All protoss strategies about playing against zerg are about defend till zerg does a throw. If it does not come youre lost to late game armys at minute 10. To play this way i would have choosen terran and play mech for almost 8 years.

Congratulations to Scarlett, definitely an unexpected result that many people have been waiting for.
That being said, as somebody who didn't have very strong opinions about either player coming in–disliked sOs's playstyle but memed about his mother, ambivalent towards Scarlett–I have to say that I am reflexively repulsed by the community reaction. This is the most disproportionate reaction to anyone winning anything I've ever seen in SC2. While I do understand that a popular player with a lot of fans who were waiting a long time will naturally cause a disproportionate reaction, I still step back out of sheer confusion/instinct.
Very well done by Scarlett of course, but (through no fault of her own) she seems to have surpassed Neeb and Byun in worst fanbases as well as winning a tournament. Or maybe I just never noticed before. My opinion of Scarlett's skill as a player has risen considerably, but my opinion of her fanbase has fallen just as much.

Funny how tears became nerfs to Protoss and see players like Byun, Rogue and Scarlett who never won a fuck in their entire life (but team titles like Proleague and GSTL) suddenly playing like gods.
The only fact here is a World Class Champion being defeated by the great book of zerg bullshit.

Even if the balance of PvZ played a role, the other races also get their moments in tournaments. People always have to whine about something. It's a great victory and you deserve it.

I get what you mean. Scarlett winning here isn't as impressive as people are making it out to be. But for one of the most beloved players of all time to win such a historic event is great for the community.
And I've been saying for the past year that Scarlett is good enough to win an event so I guess I should be happy. But people are going a bit too crazy over it.

Reading through this thread, I can't help but feel, a lot of terrans switched to Toss last patch. So I went and watched the finals to make up my own mind.
Scarlett was the better player that day.
I put the rest in spoilers, just wanna say: Early ling drops don't feel 1/10th as broken as reaper and tankivacs were vs Zerg. Fuck byun, robbed Dark, the true WCS 2016 champion. That being said, they might be slightly too cheap for how good they are.
The games: + Show Spoiler + Game 1: sOs controll his Adepts badly early game. He as ~12 Adepts split on 3 bases, loses all of them and only gets 5 drones. Tastosis call this completly wrong, not worth the investment, infact the point where he loses the game.
Game 2: Simply Outplayed. Lurkers are hard to deal with. sOs played very uninspired and almost rolls over.
Game 3: ~ehhh. Sure, lingdrops are cheap, but sOs kinda missreads the situation and seemed unfamiliar with map. However hindsight is always 20/20. This is probably where zerg drops are too good for their cost.
Game 4: Scarlett is up 3-0 and tries a fancy all in, which gets defended. Most entertaining game of the series.
Game 5: well shit happens. shade behind mineral lines to scout drones instead of skirmishing with the queen and 4 lings on the ramp. Again hindsight 20/20, that is just the fragile nature of early game PvZ

User was warned for this post Considering a lot of Protoss have also won too with a lot of cheese, it's justice.
Also, i'm pretty sure the preparation of Zest and sOs on this tournaments was like "Noobs foreigners everywhere, i will just train PvP for the final vs the other Protoss", while Scarlett played the tournament of her life.
Also sOs hasn't won a single tournament on LOTV (while Patience, Neeb, Zest, herO, Stats, Harstem, showtime, petitdrogo did).
And kor are not good at SC2 because they are kor, but because they have a special environnement where esport is more developped. And as Scarlett lives in korea, there is no reason she doesn't become as good as kor players.

Nerchio and Snute are prly behind those, or are they? :D so scarlett wins an IEM means better than neeb who won 3 WCS? Yes beating one top korean in a bo7 is more impressive than stomping a bunch of foreigners Beating an inconsistent good Korean in one series while consistently failing against other foreigners is quite impressive indeed. Consistently failing = 3-1ing Elazer and Serral. Woah, you really should go to the doctor to see how bad your dementia has gotten. Genuinely getting quite worried on your declined memory and other thinking skills.

You realize that everybody starts his journey by not having won a fuck in his life? So your argument is realllyy bad. And to add to that, as I said in the lr thread, Scarlett has shown impeccable mechanics and reads before, it all just came together recently

It's funny a friend of mine said that Scarlett would lose to Serral easily, because Scarlett wasn't the same anymore after the defeats at WESG, how wrong he was.

Oh, I understand that many people are looking at this through rose-colored glasses. I don't begrudge them their happiness. I'm no fan of sOs, as I said multiple times in the LR. That being said, I don't buy into the overhype of Scarlett either.
Once the enthusiasm of the moment dies down, people will be more rational. What Scarlett did was impressive, but no more impressive than winning a WCS Circuit trophy. Even down to the oversaturation of ZvZ series. Beating sOs in the finals is great at first glance, until you realize that sOs used exactly zero of his famously unconventional builds, and lost three of the games to cheese.
Winning a tournament "on Korean soil" means a lot less once you realize that there were a grand total of two Koreans present, and Scarlett only played one of them, a guy so renowned for his inconsistency that the community was forced to create the narrative that he only plays his best in tournaments with a $100,000 first place prize. Scarlett winning Pyeongchang is nowhere near as impressive as Neeb winning the Kespa Cup–at least Neeb's mirrors were Korean. And just like overzealous fans mistakenly extrapolated Neeb's win, so too are they mistakenly extrapolating Scarlett's. Just like they will do if Scarlett makes it to the Ro8 over Zest and Leenock, of all people, in the easiest GSL group by far. Consistency is what allows for extrapolation, and consistent results are conspicuously absent.
Congratulations to Scarlett, she played well and deserved this win. That's not an excuse to forget what this win means–and what it doesn't mean.
Yes, you can call me a killjoy

What an accomplishment by Scarlett. To take it to sOs like that shows just how high level her play is currently at. Enjoy the victory, and good luck in GSL! Go Canada!!
|
I think a Semi-Finals GSL runs would cement Scarlet as a top-tier foreigner if she manages to keep her form up well. If RO16 goes the way everyone think it does, beating zest and leenock wouldn't be too 'impressive'. Winning against Dark or Soo in the quarterfinals should at least mean her ZvZ is top notch. For amusement's sake, I do hope she will meet sos in the semi-finals again.

It kinda is true that sOs only plays his best in big money events. Well nowadays it's more he only cares about GSL. He said in an interview last year he's happy about the money he's won so far and just wants to win GSL, and other events he just tries to entertain fans. You can't really deny it when his games in crossfinals and SSL were memes, all the events he gets voted into he barely wins any maps, meanwhile he makes it to two GSL finals and a ro4.
When people say sOs's skill increases when a lot is on the line there is some backing to it. He was the only guy to every pull of a reverse all-kill in proleague history right?

Viewer numbers on Afreeca/Korean during the finals? It was around max 1200 during quarters.

She played so intelligently the whole, series - some really great moves to keep the tempo and economy of sOs in check. That roach attack in game 1 (i think) which didn't kill the third but just traded really well was so well thought out.
Congratualtions Scarlett!

What a tremendous run through that bracket. I won't say I was without doubt about Scarlett's chances of getting to the finals, let alone winning, but I'm so happy for the result. It's been a long time coming, I'm very much looking forward to what she can accomplish next.

Salt makes everything sweeter.
More seriously, since I'm not really invested in any particular players in general, and more interested in seeing good games than anything else, might as well have "entertaining" results to accompany them.

Really happy to see Scarlett get a premier win. I'm always hopeful for her doing well in tournaments, but the consistency hasn't been there. I don't necessarily think she can win all of GSL, but these results are encouraging. Hopefully she can get out of her group and to Ro8!

This is the most disproportionate reaction to anyone winning anything I've ever seen in SC2. While I do understand that a popular player with a lot of fans who were waiting a long time will naturally cause a disproportionate reaction, I still step back out of sheer confusion/instinct. Anyone with eyes can see that sOs didn't play, well, like sOs. He didn't bust out some crazy new cheese, he didn't go for anything super unexpected, he played pretty damn standard and not particularly well at that. For amusement's sake, I do hope she will meet sos in the semi-finals again. To validate the (insane) level of hype, Scarlett would have to defeat a top Korean Terran in GSL. Which is to say, INnoVation or TY. And that's probably not going to happen. Well she has done it before (not in GSL ofc), but Innovation or TY wouldn't lose to any foreign zerg. Outside of Dark or Solar they wouldn't lose to zerg in general Anything is possible, but I'm not holding my breath. Some people though, are buying into the overhype, hook, line, and sinker. Upsets happen. Consistency is what separates the best from the rest and Scarlett hasn't shown it. He's cheering for mountains of salt like I am. My ideal scenario: Ro16 Scarlett 4-0 Zest, INno Ro8 Scarlett 3-0 Dark Ro4 Scarlett 4-0 Classic Finals Scarlett 0-4 aLive I'm ambivalent towards Scarlett, though mildly annoyed at her rabid fans. I don't particularly care how she does in GSL. Not sure why people like salt so much. Salt makes everything sweeter. More seriously, since I'm not really invested in any particular players in general, and more interested in seeing good games than anything else, might as well have "entertaining" results to accompany them. I just cheer for Inno, don't much care about anyone else.
It annoys me when people are irrational though, as is often the case. Enthusiasm is not a substitute for sanity.

I've been a fan of sOs for years, even before I started playing Starcraft II. Until now. I believed in his psionic powers. I watched him win 2 world championships with it. Even though he failed to win a GSL, I believed in him. Until now.
Why? Because even if he failed miserably, he kept his cool and played smart. Not this last series.
I was screaming at my computer this whole series for him to just play safe openers since he's the better player in mid-game and late-game. Never happened.
The last game, I became an unbeliever (disbeliever?). He couldn't make a @&^@&*%^ CLOSED WALL WITH 2 ADEPTS to defend a zergling all-in.
I'm sorry, sOs. I don't care if you win the next tournament. I don't care if you play fancy vs. helpless Terrans like Special. I don't believe in you anymore, and I'm not going to start believing in you until you play with your head on again.

Considering a lot of Protoss have also won too with a lot of cheese, it's justice.
So balance must be based on justice. Good argument.

You realize that everybody starts his journey by not having won a fuck in his life? So your argument is realllyy bad.
They´re not starting his journey now that´s the point. PvZ is 42% and now scarlett is that good ? What do you expect will happen to her when protoss gets buffed ?
Yeah, nothing. Protoss never gets buffs i almost forget it.

To think she was originally disqualified from the qualifiers. Wow.

Great play!!! GG !!!! MASSIVE congratz!!!

Did you whine when Neeb won tournaments vs kor too ? I don't think so.
If sOs has lost it's his fault, not the balance. And it's not like they don't nerf a lot zerg with hydra nerf next patch.

Well the thing is with sOs and his builds was that Scarlett was hyper aggressive early on, and cheeses generally work better against people who aren't going for aggression. And sometimes, Scarlett was aggressive before sOs could even pull off any cheeses.
I think part of the reason sOs looked so bad was because Scarlett pressured him into playing that way. sOs, before hitting Scarlett, was massacring Special, Kela, and DNS. Like the games weren't particularly close, and sOs was pulling off a lot of crazy stuff there.

That was an impressive series. I wanted her to win very badly and she played each game very well, even the one that she lost. I hope this can boost her confidence so that we can have similarly good showings in future tourneys including GSL!!

Very solid win. Haven't watched SCII in awhile. Good set from her. Work in Korea showing.

Yeah, that was how I felt when watching those games too. Part of what happened was Scarlett threw sOs's builds off--I wouldn't be surprised if his mentality was a little thrown by it psychologically, because he's usually the one who's thought a few steps ahead of the other person. I'm not sure how big of a factor this was exactly, but that was how it looked to me anyway. I thought she probably got into his head a little.

sOs was playing so safe and unlike himself But very happy for scarlett, can't believe it took so long for her to get a big title.

year of scarlett instead of serral

7 years of balance and 58-42 was achieved. Keep up the progress!

It's okay guys, Neeb will still 3-0/3-1 Scarlett the next time they meet, just sOs and Zest have shit PvZ

No doubt Scarlett was the better player during that final match. Of course sOs tried all he could to stop her and in general sOs still shines with great skill. Playing like this I have hope for sOs in the GSL. But may be pure aggression is the ultimate weapon to stop the unorthodox style of sOs. May be the maps are in favor of Scarlett right now and for aggressive early and middle game zergs. But this doesn't change the fact that she really played well and to be honest, I wanted for her to grab this trophy, despite that sOs is one of my very favorite players all times. After so many years I wanted to see Scarlett with a major tournament trophy especially if you defeat one of the very top players right now and for the last 4-5 years. Actually both of them demonstrated good defence and micro. I think in this case it was a matter of will and Scarlett really wanted this. She took more risky strategies and it worked for her.

Hey guys,
Wow congratulation for Scarlett. The last time she was this close was when she was 2nd place against JD. I haven't kept up with the scene for a while since the region lock for wcs. Can someone explain to me why there were so little Korean representative for a tournament that was held in Korea? It seems the scene is artistically trying to balance out the competition.

This event in particular was held with the support of the IOC (Olympic committee). So just like the Olympics, they wanted representatives from every region even if they weren't quite as good.

No doubt it’s easier to play when you have balance on your side.

Hell yeah! Well done Scarlett! GG!

#123 I agree. But team liquid is about making sure people's feeling aren't hurt instead of protecting free speech. And #20 because every cell in Scarlett's body is made up of male chromosomes, so to say girl would be literally insane.

I highly doubt pvsnp will admit to this mistake, likely he/she will simply make some excuse for Innovation and that this proves nothing. I hope to be wrong, prove me wrong please pvsnp. Own it.
