Hey folks,
After feeling peer pressure from a tweet by eXtine, I took the plunge and reinstalled Starcraft 2. The last time I played was prior to the great redesign, i.e. the removal of the mothership core. The game at the time was just too frustrating for me and too random to justify playing, and the disappointing ending to Nova Covert Ops was the straw that broke the camel's back. The fact that none of my friends played discouraged me even more.
What resources are there now for getting back into the game? I know about Spawning Tool but I've never been able to get the Overwolf overlay to work properly.
Back in the day, I could go into the Strategy Forums or to Liquipedia to get a crash course on current meta builds, but these avenues are very dead compared to when I first started posting here.
Portal:Terran Strategy
Any videos, sites (other than TL.net), and other stuff to read/watch/listen to in order to get back up to speed on Starcraft 2?
FWIW I was Diamond 3 when I quit in 2016. I used to be Diamond Random before they added league tiers. I want to play Random again for the bragging rights.

Welcome back, I believe every return player is valueable. I think you just need some practice. Sorry I don't have much resources as I learn from community.

you'll wanna check out the subreddits /r/allthingsTerran /r/allthingsProtoss and /r/allthingsZerg
that's where a lot of the strategy posting happens these days

So... Pig is the successor of Day9, since the latter now plays DotA?
Will take a look.
Edit: I just won all five of my placement matches and am back in Diamond 3.

However, his general strategy advice is very good.

do yourself a favor and leave again, the game is still retarded.

I've played over a dozen games by now, and one thing I've noticed is that the game is a lot less swingy compared to before I quit in 2016. Maybe it's just because I'm in a better state of mind now, but it looks like there are fewer units that can end the game instantly in 2019 Starcraft 2. My biggest problems so far is the lack of reference points as to when to build new production structures or when to expand. Most of the time I spent playing Starcraft was in wings of Liberty and in Heart of the Swarm where we started with only six workers and the game felt a lot more natural to me.
If someone like me who has been playing Starcraft since 1999 has a problem figuring out what the fuck do you even do, then imagine what a complete newbie be would feel.
Post Legacy of the Void Starcraft still feels unnatural to me, even though it's been almost four years.

If you want a better understanding of timings and builds and all that stuff, go watch the latest top level korean games on Gosu Gamers and bask in how awesome the state of the game is at the moment.

I don't play StarCraft actively anymore, but why do you think so? I think that widow mine drops could be used less now because they're not cloaked permanently, but oracles, dt and things like that should still be used.

Welcome back, you should check out PiG's channel/stream. He does a ton of educational content for all races and skill levels. I'm sure people have linked his stuff in this thread already
|
Although Winter is far from being my personal flavor, I found some nice content on his YouTube channel when I started to play some Legacy of the Void after quitting the game when it was still called Wings of Liberty.

Widow mines can be permantly cloaked if researched now...

Roll with PiG instead, much better educational content.

ViBE, who streams on Twitch as ViBElol, has streamed a Bronze to GM progression for each race, and has posted those streams on YouTube organized by race (and with separate videos for each rank, i.e. Terran Diamond 3 to Diamond 2 has its own video). He hasn't made GM with his Terran yet but is up in high Masters.
You can look at the videos for each race at about the level you are to get an idea of things that work. I think ViBE does about as good a job explaining what he's doing and his decision making during play in real time as anyone, and then he often spends considerable time breaking down the replay in more detail afterwards.

Well, I uninstalled SC2 yesterday, and this time is forever.

I'm in a similar position, I stopped playing just after Heart of the Swarm came out. I was (low) Master league with Terran and Zerg. After marathoning the VODs of last years GSLs, I was really impressed with how good the game is, got the itch again and installed LotV, picking Terran.
I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. Here are some of those questions.
In TvP I always hated the the feeling of protoss moving up to higher tech units and being stuck on bio, only adding ghosts or vikings if they made HTs or colossi respectively. Is that still the case? Should I be making liberators mid to late game? How many? Are Battlecruisers good yet?
I see hydras are good. What's good against hydras? I feel totally lost in TvZ, I have absolutely no idea what they'll be going for. I kind of miss when everyone just went ling/bane/muta.
What the fuck do ravens do now? I saw them in tournaments just melting zerg air armies with some kind of new seeker missile thing, but my understanding is that it got nerfed. What does it do now? What units can I use it against?
What happened to ghost snipe. It's weird now.
What's a cyclone. What's it for?
Where's Day[9]? Where's IdrA? Actually where's a whole bunch of people. Is the scene dead or dying?
Why are foreigners good now?
What's the feeling on how the game is being balanced post David Kim? Running my eye over the patch notes it seems a little all over the place, several things have been changed and then changed back, and major balance rejigs seems oddly frequent.

1º Why are foreigners good now?
2º What's the feeling on how the game is being balanced post David Kim? Running my eye over the patch notes it seems a little all over the place, several things have been changed and then changed back, and major balance rejigs seems oddly frequent.
1º sc2 has low skill ceiling and zerg is imba.
2º In my opinion the game now is not better, the only positive thing about the previous versions of the game is that the games are not so long. With Lotv a lot of strategies have been lost, especially in the early game, there are no viable strategies without using vespene gas (except the shameful cannon rush), and the games are summarized in a race to expand and reach the T3 units (while you try to do economic damage to the rival). Deathballs remain, zerg bane-ling (and hydras) amove is still an embarrassment that does not require skill and with zerg you can reach master league using only one or two control groups and frequently using f2 amove.
In Lotv there is hardly any real strategy, now everyone expands more, but the only reason for that is that there are now ridiculously few minerals per base, and that's why everyone expands, that's not a strategy, it's an obligation, the game does not reward you enough if you mine from more than three bases. Lotv for me is as disappointing or more so than Wol and Hots. Speaking as a former terran player, I feel that for terrans the game is more boring than ever, TvT stinks, there is no variety, it is not allowed to expand quickly since it is more likely that one or two reapers of the rival serve to defeat you before the minute 5. PvT is still a garbage but in another way (and imbalanced), ZVT, I already said it, zerg against T does not need skill (I speak of terran using bio), mech vs zerg is stupid and boring, unviable in high level and bored in master league and lower leagues. For me SC2 is over, I will continue watching competitions, from Brood War obviously, the SC2 competitions always bored me even when I played it.

Your negative attitude is frankly embarassing and it feels so so out of place if compared to the authentic enthusiasm White_hart exhudes.
Foreigners are better now because the region lock allowed EU and NA scenes to develop without being strangled by the overwhelming opposition of top koreans; LoTV's skill ceiling is arguably higher than HoTS's and Zerg is not imba: it was probably the strongest race during Serral's reign last patch mid to late 2018 but by a slight and healthy margin(only Maru and Protoss won GSL tournaments last year).
The game is not dying, it's actually on the rise in terms of audience outside Korea. There is some uncertainty regarding longterm plans for the progaming scene as the new Activision-Blizzard is experiencing internal changes and this might reflect in downgrading the funds for sc2 tournaments ;Heroes of the Storm pro scene got cancelled entirely and someone fears Sc2 could experience the same soon, but we will enjoy WCS in 2019 and hopefully for another couple of years.

okay then. what has high skill potential to you?
to OP, what has always been most relevant to me in re-acclimating has been to watch a vod and reference timers to production.
at this point i've stopped and picked the game up again several times and i've also played starcraft since little--i don't think that's ultimately relevant to having less difficulty with knowing what to do. it's really just you understanding how games play out.
as of 3+ months ago, terran vs zerg to my best knowledge: - reaper expand - mine from both refineries after expand, factory - one marine (or skip) into reactor. - produce 6-12 hellions behind which you wall and plant 3rd CC (also part of the wall), add 2 rax (total 3) shortly after. - after hellions produced go immediately into stim and double engi., tank. - combat shields and 1/1 will be closely lined after stim finishes. - you will have attacked with 2 tanks and a group of marines with combat shields upgrading. - 5 rax (basic amount) on 3CC and double engi. upgrading 2/2 and further. - take 4th and freestyle from here.
all gathered from watching a single vod and trying to provide reference points for when and what. make sense of what people are doing and produce to the best of your ability. many of these builds are far weaker when workers idle or production is stifled.
tvz - 1st pylon at natural, make sure pylon grid covers everything barely, else you must use another pylon to finish. (most if not all maps allow for the former) - goal is to take a nexus after gateway +assim and cut probes to afford a cyber core asap after nexus. - finish wall with another gateway (+pylon if necessary), and a unit (adept in most cases). - with both assimilators you should be able to afford a fast stargate. phx or oracle first is preference, but oracle first is solid in most cases. - with two gateways and tech (oracles) you may take a third base while gaining upgrades. add shield batteries @3rd if cutting corners. the oracles defend against zerglings vs odd ravager attacks b/c of high DPS. - tech to robo + twilight + 2 gate for fast templar archives. to goal is to be able to make 4 templar -> 2 archons in one warp prism. the archons are untouchable and buy you time to upgrade with a forge + charge. - gateway flood up to 8 gates on 3 base. chargelot storm with constant immortal production. double robo production if aiming for a faster timing without storm.
for Z in most cases - goal is to take a third base quickly and to saturate on 2 bases while staying safe. timing for 3rd varies between 2:30 to 4:30. - queen production prioritized vs T, droning quickly vs P, and scouting vs Z. - timing to watch out for vs P is about 3:30 (more or less depending on position of stargate). you need to build 2 or 3 spores in bases vs oracles to minimize damage. - if lost, sac starting overlord to see exact tech and production. - hellions? or an armory? add 12 lings, or 6 sets. - lair + up to 4 gases shortly after full saturation and maybe half saturation at 3rd. you will easily max saturate and consider a 4th by 6:30 if diligent. - creep spread reaches half-map around 7-8 minutes, and you will want to take a 4th as you begin to max out.
- vs P roach hydra lurker. lategame broodlords and vipers // vs Z roach ravager -> roach hydra lurker // vs T ling bane or roach hydra into lategate tech, all you need to do is prevent expansions and take good fights.
you get the idea. all it takes is watching one vod where you know the players are doing something rather standard and the outcome is good. very many tweaks can be made to the builds for flavor or because you lack a certain skill. i.e, adding fast cloak banshees to a TVZ build to fend off roach+ravager attacks and to punish a greedy player.

Is there a better one-base all-in build than going 1-1-1 with reactor barracks and tech labs on the factory and starport?
Because I've been doing this almost every single game and I can't find a better, non-cheese build online other than this.
|
The game is straight up trash now. So no point to start playing again.

2base all ins are better because you can do things like
5rax allin 3Factory allin MarineTankAllin 2baseScvPull
that being said if you do really like 1base you can do things such as
2rax reaper 3rax reaper 4rax reaper (Very dumb)
2Rax Marine SCV Pull 3Rax Marine Bunker 4Rax Marine
1-1-1 all in like you've already been doing lifted rax for vision and going Cyclones w/ Magfield Battlecruiser rush (Probably gone now :/ )
There is a lot of crap but off of the top of my head those are the ones that I know.
