One of the longest running curses in StarCraft II was broken in Poland as soO cast off his silver shackles to claim the IEM Katowice championship. soO appeared to be headed to another devastating loss after Stats went up 2-0 in the grand finals, but the ex-Kong rallied back to win four consecutive maps. soO was unable to hold back tears after winning the IEM trophy which gave him the 'major' title that had eluded him for so long.
Stats had looked imperious throughout the tournament, arriving in the finals with a 10-0 match record. soO seemed like he would be an easy eleventh victim, with his Zerg forces breaking helplessly against the 'Shield of Aiur' in the first two games. However, the swarming Zerg style that had seen soO reach ten previous finals began to work in in game three, and the normally steadfast Stats was suddenly overwhelmed by waves of Hydras, Roaches, and Banelings. Down 2-3, Stats pulled out a tricky 2-base all-in to try and even the score, but soO was able to snuff out the attack to end the series 4-2 and win the $150,000 1st place prize.
soO's runner-up curse and 'kong' reputation had been one of the longest running narratives in StarCraft II, with his first finals loss coming in 2013 at the hands of Dear. Four more 2nd place finishes would follow before he finally won KeSPA Cup II in 2015, and then four more losses after that. Fan mythology proved to be a stronger force than historical fact, as the StarCraft community collectively denied the KeSPA Cup victory 'major' status. It was a position that even soO himself bought into as he continued his search for a championship that no one could dispute. That search would take him all the way to BlizzCon 2017 where he suffered his worst heartbreak yet, losing to Rogue on StarCraft II's grandest stage.
A poor 2018 campaign suggested that the BlizzCon loss may have finally broken the unbreakable player, but early signs were positive for soO in 2019. He looked strong in the early rounds of GSL and online competition—but he was still overshadowed by names such as Serral and Maru, heading into IEM Katowice. Any hopes of a title run seemed to die in the group stage where he finished 2-3, but an unlikely four-way tie saw soO squeeze into the playoff bracket.
Though soO entered the playoffs with the worst record among the participants, he took his play to another level after receiving the unexpected second chance. soO's 3-0 sweep against the mercurial Zest was not surprising, but his bloody 3-2 victory over reigning Global Champion Serral instantly restored soO's championship contender status. herO—an underdog punching above his weight—was summarily dispatched in the semis, setting up soO's meeting with Stats in the finals.
With the victory, soO has not only secured $150,000, but a spot at the 2019 WCS Global Finals. A BlizzCon championship won't be necessary to secure soO's place as one of SC2's all-time legends. Yet, it will be intriguing to see if soO can change his reputation from that as StarCraft II's biggest loser to one of its greatest winners.
As the ultimate Maru fanboy and terran supporter I have to say I wouldn't have wanted this tournament to end any other way then it did (some more TvZ would have been great though). So happy for soO, he played well!
what a fucking inspirational man. ive been watching this man play sc2 for over half a decade, and watched his soul crushing 2017 loss to evil rogue at blizzcon. i thought he was really done after that defeat, as he basically dropped off the face of the earth in 2018 and had basically no results to speak of, and didn't even qualify for blizzcon. i thought it was over for him and he would seek retirement. even then though, i still considered him a champion in my eyes, because he always pushed forward despite all the second place finishes and strove to do his best, which takes a strong will, grit and determination.
to me, this win is more amazing than maru triple GSL first place finishes, and serrals 2018 dominance and becoming first foreigner to win blizzcon and best player in the world

Very emotional and well-deserved win for soO, even Smix was barely able to hold out her tears during the interview.
Also won GSL Super Tournament in the time frame mentioned. The agenda to push for Stats as this new Kong seems a bit artificial. The guys won four premier tournaments.
In its darkest hour, Korea called upon a champion to step forth and regenerate the glory. All eyes looked to Maru but the Terran did not face up to the task and Korea was left without hope. But from the shadows came the perennial Kong, victim of so many taunts, written off as he who could never take the greatest price. He brought Serral to the brink and pushed him over it using only Honorable Korean Non-Hive ZvZ and showed its superiority in the face of modern European styles. But his biggest task was yet awaiting him in the grand finals, where he conquered the biggest foe of all: the shadow of his own inferiority. As he stood speechless on the podium, overwhelmed with the realization of his most profound desire, a thousand nerds shed tears of joy as soO finally lifted the trophy.
Surely the streets of Korea will be filled with celebration as its champion returns in glory. Many people are already expecting the reunification of the country in a swelling of pride over soO's achievement. And the return of proleague.
An extraordinary feat, the first ever time I watch Korean Starcraft was his second GSL defeat vs Zest, I have watch every single one of his premier final ever since and frankly lost hope before him.
Today was the first of his final that I didn't get to watch live, still only reading TL thread got me crying. Can't wait to watch it when I come home.
This is best news to wake up to! Never really thought soO would do it but he did and I am so happy for him! I remember watching all his GSL finals losses in HotS all those years ago and feeling his pain as nothing seemed to go in his favour. Now, here we are, with soO winning a premier event!!
The final games were not the most amazing games, but beating the world champion in a few insane ZvZs really showcased how good he is at this game. Well done soO, great fighting spirit, great mechanics, great discipline, great heart and dedication!

Not to mention he was repeatedly knocked out in the early regional qualifiers, so he had to attend the local qualifier. I shed in tears during his interview. Someone got to tell me that is not any shame.

I just got my eyes a bit wet but no tears.so im the one who should be ashamed. soO is inspirational. His story and how he reacts to it, what he said in post match interview after losing to gumihO and other interviews. Just a great person
Such an emotional post match interview with Smix, really touched me! Congrats soO, well-deserved. As he mentioned he said it will probably be one of his last events outside of Korea due to being need to go to Army soon. So thankful he was able to do that in front of a huge crowd <3

Lol k somebody forgot to take their pills this morning.
It is pretty sick tho that the 2 series serral dropped in iem (soo/inno) were vs 2 players from Korea who didnt even qualify for blizzcon..2 out of ro4 also(add herO). If that doesnt highlight the stupidity of region lock then im actually convinced literally nothing will.
one type of heroes is those who looks indestructible, unbeatable. they are like gods, and you find yourself want them to continue pushing forward, a living "one punch man". maru and serral incredible runs last year felt like that, at least to me.
the opposite type are the human heroes- those who stumble and fall, and get up again and again. they are fragile, even flawed at times, and in them you can see yourself and your everyday struggles. unlike the former type, you keep hoping for them to get up and fight because if they succeed, maybe you can too.
i love both types of heroes: the first type leaves me awe inspired. but the second stirs up my insides, inviting me to join their emotional journey, and shed some tears in the process. so soO, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!

That's a beautiful story. IEM always delivers. Very, very happy for soO. He was always one of the greatest Zergs and now at last he gets his award and confirmation. And when i saw his tears I almost cry myself as a baby. Something beautiful. GG soO!!! Great Tournament!

Yeah, I would love to have some darkest hours like Korean Starcraft.
Got to admit that my eyes filled with tears today. What an amazing career! What an incredible personality! In the very beginning of the migration of the Kespa teams, soO used to be Ro16 player in Code S, but then in 2013 he reforged his talant. Back then I didn't like him. I was a Soulkey fan (still I am) but soO was just another arrogant zerg who used to give very decisive interviews how he would desroy anyone and I gladly observed how my favorite protosses dealt with him. But simultaneously soO proved what he was made of. His second final against Zest is one of the best finals in GSL history! I realized that he is different and really hyper talented and balanced macro zerg genius in HotS era. I remember a match in Ro16 against Parting who tried any kind of quick timing attacks and proxy cheeses. soO made him look pathetic! And everything was changed. No matter who is facing - favorites or no favorites, soO always impressed me. And he grew up and started learn from his mistakes. He started smiling more often, no trace of arrogance, then I realized that he was always a cool guy, and those interviews in the past was just a part of Korean funny attitude and dialogues, only showing some fake rivalries, nothing personal, nothing serious, just for the fun and the sport aggression. And all this long way from unliking him in the deep past from getting so emotional with every his match up until today when I cried after his victory. soO got some incredible ZvZ almost two years ago against Dark (another of my favorites) in Ro16 in GSL Code S, one of the best ZvZ's ever!!! To be honest, soO is probably not the best player right now, but he showed the maximum of his form by beating the best player Serral (being best player doesn't mean that you got to win every time). And have to say that Stats played very poorly after 2:0. Like after 2:0 and the first break he went outside the hall, may be visiting the bathroom and he suddenly changed. soO became the well balanced and defending Stats - they practically exchanged their roles.

Well, that single victory was drowning in a sea of heartbreaking defeats. After IEM he is no more a Kong, just as Stats definitely does not belong to the line.
As much as I loved the whole tournament, in the end i missed Artosis and Tasteless cast in the final, especially with the outcome. They casted soO much loosing final. Does anyone know, why they stayed away?

Thankfully they stayed away...if you want to talk about travesties, the timing of Blizconn made them miss a BW finals of Flash vs. Effort. I almost would rather have not even had them at Blizzcon if it meant they got to cast that.

moonglade and valdez casted the Kespa Cup with SoO winning, you might be onto something.
soO broke the curse in the most unlikely situation. Squeezed by Group Stage with 2-3 record and 0-2 down vs Stats. I really thought the curse was too strong and soO would lose 2-4 again.
Feel bad for Stats but I'm sure he is fine. Still the most consistent Protoss in the past several years and a force to be reckon with.
Also, Stats will never be Kong. He is GSL, SSL and Super Tournament champion. You gotta lose some when you make to many finals.

Kind of dissapointing games in the finals. 6 out of 6 games Stats went for the same allin with little variations. He's micro wasn't good either in some key moments. He got soO in the first two games but thats it, after that the build was pretty much figured out.
SoO played pretty well, but the games he played against Serral were miles better. Yeah, but that has to do something with the current state of the PvZ match up.
Overall after the games he played against Serral he deserved this win more than anyone else.

You know most of the time life isn't fair. Most of the time you'll just get beaten up over and over again, expected to take it because well... that's what you do. Most of the time you must live like Sisyphus, everyday rolling that boulder up the hill only for it to come crashing back down again.
But sometimes, in rare instances, by some random happenstance, life transcends that. Sometimes it all just clicks together and works. Sometimes, the boulder stays up at the top of the hill, if only for a day. That's when it was all worth it.
soO's achievement here transcends Esports. It strikes a chord with every person that has had to suffer and persevere to succeed in the hopes that they can finally push the boulder up for good. soO kept pushing that boulder despite everything that was stacked against him and for today at least he stands atop that hill, able to rest.
Truly the most engaging player story in Starcraft 2's history.

OMG i think i know exactly which match against parting you were talking about. i had always thought parting and his soul train were super overrated and i was cheering against him, and then in comes soo and he smashes him so hard. i hadn't even heard of him before then, so to me that was his debut. and i remember thinking, HA i knew parting was overrated he lost to some random faceless korean zerg! who knew this random faceless korean zerg would make me cry today
I think stats may feel a little bad for coming on second place again, but being the way that he is and being one of the nicest players I've seen. He really didn't look devastated or frustrated.
He didn't look deep in thought either. It's like he's genuinely happier that one of his friends finally broke the curse than sad that he lost.
Won't lie, I got teary. I haven't felt this way since Byun won the GSL. What a story. Those emotions at the end...he got emotional, Smix got emotional, the Twitch chat became emotional. His emotional speech about rallying up the last bits of his being when down 0-2... just WOW. The man slayed a monster in Serral and then made an epic comeback at a moment he usually falters without hope.
I'm so glad that soO finally got that premier tier championship that he has been wanting for so long. And not just him. His fans waited FOREVER for this moment. So many tears were shed today. And for all the right reasons too.

Easily the best storyline that could happen this year for me. soO finally getting his championship, especially after his 2018 performance where he looked ready to end his career and move on, is just so incredible. The only thing that could have made it better is if his series vs Serral had been the finals imo. Congrats to soOjwa, he most certainly earned it.
I want a short film about this story I want Sylvester Stone to be the instructor I want the "ADRIAAAN" song at the end, replaced with SMIX "SMIX I DID IT!"
Still sad about the lack of terran beyond the first round of the playoffs, but at a complete loss for words for soO. So happy to finally see him on the podium of a major major tournament.

They have the same number of wins, Stephano has 4 premiers (IGN PL, ESWC, NASL and WCS EU) and 2 "real" major (Lone Star Clash 1 and 2) and Neeb also has 4 premier (3 WCS and a Kespa cup) a 2 major (Cheesadelphia and Hangzhou festival). The second-3rd-4th place are pretty similar, I would give the edge to Neeb personally since he was at the top of the foreign scene for longer (aka lost less vs foreigner) but Stephano won more tournament with korean in it, even if it was sometime B tier korean. Pretty sure Neeb has more money tho.
Awesome, so many great things happening. I've loved sc2 for so many years and if anyone would have told me after proleague was shut down that the Starcraft scene would get even better I would never have believed it. I cried when TY proxied Classic to take the proleague gold for KT, when Byun som and when Maru took his third consecutive gsl but this tournaments tops them all.
Not only did soO win, he did it in the most amazing way ever, almost getting knocked out of groups, taking Serral down AND clawing himself back Up from being 0-2 down. Seriously, I'll never forget this.
That's reassuring. After the late start to the GSL and how shitty it's been over at Blizzard with Activisions encroaching influence this was starting to look like a worse year than 2016
i was out of town yesterday and tried my best to avoid spoilers, and thankfully i did.
and now i am sitting here, 36 years old, having seen my children been born and some loved ones go forever and still having a little bit of water in the edges of my eyes after a final of a videogame.
i often ask myself, why i keep watching this game, with all the people who seem to care more about memes than good play, or with finding even the most pathetic arguments why their favorite player is better than someone else favorite player. i keep on thinking, maybe its just not for me anymore.
but then a player like soO reminds me what makes all this great for me. uniting pretty much everybody in happines for a single person, no matter who they prefere on any other day.
even if he obviously will never ever read this here, but my sincere thanks to soO for never giving up and keep on trying and by that giving me the single best moment i have ever witnessed in all of starcraft.
you've always been a champion of hearts, now you are champion in every way
I re-activated my account just to comment on this. This guy..... This guy is a absolute fucking inspirational legend. 12 years of starcraft, 11 grand finals lost, and he finally manage to win one of the biggest championship ever against some of the best players the game has ever produced. When he was down 0-2 against Stats, I was thinking "OMG the curse is happening again, he's going to get smoked again in another finals". If it was me, my mental would be so broken at that point, but somehow soO managed to overcome this, and proceeded to play absolutely out of his mind. I've never seen something like that, it's like he just said fuck it all, and went into super saiyan mode and smashed the next 4 games out of the park.
soO, I've watched sc2 for almost 9 years and I've never really liked you as a player for some reason. Preferring people like Parting, MC, sOs, Maru, and Rogue. But last weekend changed everything. You are the fucking man. And my new favourite player. Whenever I feel down and feel like giving up in the future, I will think of that grand final match of IEM Katowice 2019 soO vs Stats, and I will try my best to channel my inner soO.

Never give up, never surrender.
Yep, I was tearing up alongside Smix and soO during that interview. I hate that Serral had to go down but at least he put up a valiant fight, and soO got his rightful place as a champion after all these years.

Disappointed by foreigners performance, I feel like they can perform better :/

Gonna guess mod just got sick of people railroading a happy inspirational op with salt whining. Not saying there is no issue to be discussed but theres already MULTIPLE threads to bitch in.
yeah i think the reason soo resonates with so many people is he is relatable, (setting aside the fact that he is a world class player lol). everyones got their own struggles in life and setbacks. sometimes your greatest demon you have to defeat - is yourself. and soo did that on sunday when he down 0-2. he was already a champion in my eyes for his grit and determination, it was inspirational to see his hard work and dedication pay off.

Especially hearing his interview...he came back from the abyss and finally won the championship. I don't know of any story in any sport I find as inspiring.
After all this time, where I was prepared Soo would fade, only to be now and there mentioned as the ultimate kong, when it was clear a player with the greatness of Soo would only be remembered as having the fate of a jobber, he did quality, removed the reigning champion from the competition and finally reached for the crown. This time he got it.
Him showing Serral the door means his victory cannot be questioned.
When Stats conceded, Soo looked a bit surprised. But he then lifted the trophy like a champion. Like all the time he knew, may the moment be brief, but he will have it.

It's very simple.
1) The comment says he is happy Serral lost
2) The comment suggests that Terran is too weak as a race
The mods only permit balance complains from zergs and protoss, and they get really salty whenever anyone shows elation at Serral losing.

He's balance whining in every thread. He's an experienced user so he knows not to do it too blatantly as to be obviously a bannable offence, but he does it consistently like a faucet that is slowly dripping a drop of water at a time

There's no curse. It's a psychological barrier which he had to overcome just like any champion. Admittedly, his path to the victory was longer, hence more emotional. Congratulations to soO as this still quite an achievement to keep trying and to win finally.

As previously pointed out, soO wasn't expected to win every single final he lost; every defeat slowly eroded his confidence to the point it became a "curse" for him and perceived as such by the viewers.
Evidently, the fact he will be forced to retire at the end of the year allowed him to overcome his block and eventually win a well deserved prestigious title.

Psychological barrier is the wrong term, it was not that he could not win due to psychological factors, it was just that those factors effected him. The mental state effects all players, everyone have times when they perform worse due to strain, fear, pressure, exhilaration or similar that doesn't mean they have a barrier
soO didn't have to overcome a mental block "just like any other champion", any other champion hasn't lost three consecutive finals. Most champions don't even know a fraction of the pressure soO has been through, maybe thats why he was able to play well, maybe the pressure gave him strength rather than create a block.

Not sure it was due to him retiring, he has been considering retiring many times, that didn't make him win a finals before. I don't think his victory should be cheapened to the point that its chored up to be just because he is about to retire.

He had considered retiring in the past, now he knows for sure he will have to; that's a big difference, to me.
I don't think this cheapens his victory, to me it makes it more epic. soO had looked stronger in the past coming into the finals and there were situations when his victory looked a much likelier conclusion, yet he won now; not sure it's just a coincidence.

I think you're interpretation is still off.
The idea that "soO wasn't expected to win every single final he lost" is just plainly wrong. He was considered a favorite or equal in multiple of his finals. I think there is a bigger factor than him being forced to retire soon: he had very little pressure at this event. He wasn't considered by anybody to make an impact. He probably was counted out by many to even get out of his group - and rightfully so, considering the very close results of his group. There weren't expectations laying on him and with every step he already was "overperformig" while being considered the underdog even in the finals. SoO was more able to just play his style without thinking about the outcome too much.

That's...a stretch, to put it lightly. But maybe now that he has won a championship he'll be able to get better results in other tournaments.

It's no soO, but I think ZG did some replay analysis of IEM Katowice but IDK if it was only terran, I assume Pig will do some in the near future too, I'm sure other streamer/ pro player did/will also do it. to me, this win is more amazing than maru triple GSL first place finishes, and serrals 2018 dominance and becoming first foreigner to win blizzcon and best player in the world
Literally can't comprehend how one could actually think this.
Maru finally rising up was more inspirational than soO's. They both been playing sc2 for nearly same amount of time, both won some tournaments here and there but nothing major until finally Maru won 3 back to back GSLs compared to soO's one Katowice win.

With soO's win there was much drama and emotions. Some people like that (I don't understand either, Maru's and Serral's accomplishments are far more amazing imo).

Uhem, Maru played sc2 since inception, soO only joined in 2 years later. Also, Maru became relevant (as the top tier player, before anyone nitpicks) right as he won a starleague title.

Maru was a double Royal Roader and the best Proleague player in SC2 history years before his triple GSL run.

Dude no one is claiming soO winning IEM is somehow harder or more of an achievement than Maru and Serral's victories last year. The guy is just saying he finds it more inspiring for him. I agree too, getting 11 second places then finally winning one of the hardest tournaments in the world makes for a much better story than someone just winning everything.

Would really like to see that.
If anybody knows soO (ahem mizenhauer) and could reach out to him about it see if hes cool w someone playing the vod on stream while a translater voice overs! Will throw down on the translaters fee.
I can talk to him about it, but what you're asking for is a weird way of doing it. I also have a translator that I work with on articles. If you're serious about paying for a translation send me a PM and we'll see what I can do.
Awesome! Yah i just wrote the first idea that came to my head lol. No preference whatsoever on format. Will pm u.
I'll contribute too if need be. Thanks for being a bro and putting it out there.

Good deal bros. Miz is gonna try to work it out w a translator and make a vid send me pm will let u kno watsup.
to me, this win is more amazing than maru triple GSL first place finishes, and serrals 2018 dominance and becoming first foreigner to win blizzcon and best player in the world
Literally can't comprehend how one could actually think this.
Maru finally rising up was more inspirational than soO's. They both been playing sc2 for nearly same amount of time, both won some tournaments here and there but nothing major until finally Maru won 3 back to back GSLs compared to soO's one Katowice win.
Dude no one is claiming soO winning IEM is somehow harder or more of an achievement than Maru and Serral's victories last year. The guy is just saying he finds it more inspiring for him. I agree too, getting 11 second places then finally winning one of the hardest tournaments in the world makes for a much better story than someone just winning everything.

soO winning KeSPA cup forever forgotten
KeSPA cup definitely takes 2nd place to this IEM, technically making it his 12th 2nd place.
As it was said many times, it isn't considered as a premier tournament by many. Which i never understood, since the very same players entered that tournament, like any other SSL or GSL. But the winner prize money was like only comparable to a GSL 3-4th prize money, while the GSL winner got lik 8x the money of the Kespa cup winners prize money.
soO you've finally done it. All of the heartbreak of the past can now be laid to rest. We've always believed in you and now you are a champion. soO fighting!

I don't care what's it considered, he had to beat KeSPA players during undisputable KeSPA reign. He won a hard tournament almost exactly in the middle of all the 2nd places. He won before, it wasn't 11 second places and no championship title there. This just lowers his acomplishments. Winning that tourney was big.

I love the interview on soO done by hajisun & ToD. He jokingly said that Serral was the Deepmind, so if he beat Serral then he technically beat Deepmind.
Then, the story about Bunny as the next player should bear the curse of Kong. Bunny was dreaming of having final matchup with Soo, so that he could win easily. This was made before Soo hold the IEM trophy. He also trash talked Stats some kind like underperformed soccer player, and Rogue as someone couldn't be able to hold the IEM trophy like he did.
Other thing was his relationship with Innovation seemed like special thing since he praised him a lot during the interview. I guess it was a platonic bromance-kind relationship, maybe.
