http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/05/05/elite-dangerous-final-alpha-phase-landing-may-15th-contains-over-400-billion-star-systems/ "Elite Dangerous' final alpha phase landing May 15th, contains "over 400 billion star systems" From the article: "I'm no expert on numbers, like the guy out of Numb-three-ers, but even I know that 400 billion is a really big number. Like, really big. In addition to being the number of The Beast's second cousin, Alan, 400bn is also the number of star systems that will feature in Elite Dangerous' final alpha phase. Alpha 4 "genuinely contains over 400 billion star systems,” Frontier Developments state in the most recent newsletter, star systems that will “[move] correctly; spinning, orbiting each other in an incredible astronomical ballet.” Alpha 4 will go live on May 15th, if Frontier can stop waxing poetic about the wonders of space in the meantime. "We are also modelling interstellar molecular clouds," Frontier continue, "and though some of the detail in these (particularly for nebulae) will come after Alpha 4, wherever you are, the ‘night sky’ is accurate. Beyond our galaxy, perhaps surprisingly we do still have a ‘skydome’ - but it is now a staggering 100,000 light years away, containing all the other galaxies, including the Magellanic Clouds." Alpha 4 "sets you free in a 200 cubic light year volume of space in the Milky Way galaxy, far from Earth". You won't be able to fly to Earth, incidentally, but as you presumably live there, you're probably not too cut up about that. On May 30th, as previously mentioned here, Elite: Dangerous will enter the first phase of its Premium Beta, which will ship to all backers who stumped for the appropriate reward tiers. The rest of us will have to wait until the end of the year, when Elite is set to be loosed upon the universe for real."

It is mindblowing in that it's very easy to just let your eyes drift out of focus a bit and it's "real". I don't have a much better description of what's great about it than that. It helps that it's difficult and poorly documented so you stumble around working things out for a long time, a bit like you might in a real spaceship in the year 3300. And you're doing that in a galaxy with billions of star systems. Yes. Really. Billions. In the end though it comes down to dogfighting, trading, mining and exploring and they are all pretty boring except maybe dog fighting and finding a dog fight that doesn't get you killed (either by the person you're attacking or by the police a short time later) is difficult.. Playing in a group really helps but then you have to wrestle with some problems about not being in the same instance which still seem to crop up fairly regularly. Still though, sometimes I want to be a space adventurer even if being a space adventurer is a bit boring. Plus, when they talk about what they want to add for expansions it all sounds perfect. Planetary landings. Star trek style mult user ships. FPS type deals with ship interiors. Boarding. etc. etc. and given what they have achieved so far, I believe them. So buy the game so they have the cash to do it, pretty pretty please. Release date 16th. Next Tuesday. http://www.elitedangerous.com/

It sure looks amazing but is there a game behind that for people who arent that much into exploring? I mean a whole "realistic" galaxy sounds amazing but if its really realistic this galaxy will be very empty. And as gorgous as it looks after 50 suns it might get old. Is it playable with a 360 Controler? Or is it only really viable for mining and looking?

Is it playable with a 360 Controler? Or is it only really viable for mining and looking? Basically it all looks the same, to me at least. But I don't know how different things can look when its sun, orbiting planets, orbiting space stations, it kind of is what it is. There's a lot of NPCs but where I am there aren't many people. With the galaxy being so big that's going to be an issue. I have literally no idea where the fuck I am, in the middle of nowhere apparently. But I'm just farming up money for a new ship so it doesn't matter much. Go to nav beacon, fly around, look for people with bounties, kill them, rinse, repeat. Get a bunch of bounty money built up and go back to turn them in. I've been having fun, it's sort of a relaxing game when I need to chill. It doesn't have grouping which is a MAJOR drawback. I can't really recommend it to friends since we can't do anything together anyway. I think that would help greatly with never seeing actual people. I just use a mouse and keyboard. I haven't flown in probably over a decade so I was rusty as hell, but I've gotten a lot better. Don't see the need for a joystick, no idea how well a 360 controller would work since I haven't tried it, but I'm sure you could do it. If you want to play with friends wait. If you don't mind flying solo and just tooling around its fine. If nothing else I'm brushing up on dog fighting for Star Citizen.

The overall atmosphere and feel of the game is almost exactly what I expected, in a very good way. Flying and combat hearkens back to the old X-wing/Tie Fighter games I loved when I was young, but the world around it is vast and explorable. As a space nerd, this pleases me greatly. Love the exploration and different kinds of systems to discover. The game looks really great and could look even better in the future (and probably will, the anti-aliasing needs work and they've acknowledged this it seems). I'm personally playing with an Xbox controller, and I had to tweak the configuration quite a bit until I was comfortable, but it seems to be working out now. I have an ancient Sidewinder in my closet somewhere I could dig out eventually assuming it still works, probably if I get more into the combat aspects, but the 360 controller is great for now with relatively comfortable controls and being simple/out-of-the-way for a relaxing, casual exploration experience. It's easy to see how people quickly sink cash into a nice rig with joystick + throttle and a keypad or other peripheral for auxiliary inputs. Having also gotten back into Flight Simulator recently when it was on sale, it's going to take conscious effort not to do this myself lol Will probably try and get some of my buddies into this once they flesh out the multiplayer and grouping systems. I'm kind of bored of the whole "we released a product but keep patching it 100 times in the next few months/years" that's become the trend these days, but that's usually because the shipped game is a really broken product and they need extraa time/testing to fix all the crap. This is the other end of the spectrum, where the released product feels solid as is, but their optimism and teasing at future free content leaves one very hopeful.

Don't get me wrong, I still like the game, I like playing it and I have spent many hours on it, but there just isn't really much more to this game than a lesser-featured prettier Freelancer (this game is pretty much a reference for me as far as space sims go). Tell me if you feel differently, I'd be happy to discuss that more in details.

How well it will turn out depends entirely on how long it is supported and how much content is added.

The problem is that we don't really benefit much from the "infinite universe" concept and that multiplayer is horrendous (I hear they're going to fix that eventually) and these 2 points are probably what make ED more modern than Freelancer. I'm just hoping that any and/or all of these issues will evolve over time. Solid multiplayer would be a top priority if I could get some friends into it, and that's one they've already covered many times, they're aware. The other things -- some sort of story/voice acting/world-building, more ships -- are things I'll assume are on their radar and might show up in content in the future. If not, I'll probably feel the same after 10-20 hours as well haha. But if I get that much out of it for full price I'll honestly be happy, anything more would just be a very welcome bonus. Seems like the perfect type of game to return to (and maybe start a fresh save, or hopefully let us have multiple in the future!) every few months, where they've probably made changes and introduced some new ideas. Never played Freelancer myself. Something I should look into, perhaps...

Thing is pretty fun, its fast as shit and has way more fire power than the old sidewinder. I'd gotten used to the sidewinder and it's not a bad little ship at all. I didn't trade my old one in because I like it for what it is, but also its smart to have enough money saved up to buy your new ship multiple times in case you get blown up. So, I kept the sidewinder for a fall back ship if I get too crazy with my viper and die. The viper also sounds mean as fuck, the engines make it sound like a hyper car or something when you fly it. There's almost this guttural backfiring sound when you punch it. Has a completely different feel which is super cool. Need to make some more cash and finish outfitting it. I got a Viper recently but traded it in almost instantly for an adder. The Viper is really good but I was in the middle of nowhere and the jump range is tiny. I'm going to find my way over to where the action is (or will be) and then trade back to the Viper i think,
