They can cost between $1-$5 USD per piece so it is quite a treat and kinda hipstery. The few macron stores that I see that are still around are pretty much very established ones since the fad has died down quite a bit, at least in USA/Canada. In the world? I would even venture to say that they are "main-stream" because I swear I've seen them in dessert menus in random restaurants now. (Even grocery stores sell them in the bakery department) If you are in a major city, just search "city-name macaron" and there will probably be at least 3 places that specialize in it. Case in point: I took the 50th most populated city in Canada (St. John's Newfoundland) and found 3 - they actually look pretty nice! http://www.butterbakery.ca/classic-cakes/macaron-cake/ http://www.rocketfood.ca/baked-goods/ https://bistro-sofia.foodpages.ca/

Haven't seen Macarons in either of them which doesn't mean much because I usually give something that looks so toxic a wide berth. The problem with food that looks like that is that it mostly just tastes of sugar in a very strong manner, regardless of form or colour of the product. If you've never tried them before, I would highly recommend trying them from a respectable bakery first. I mean even at its best I don't think macarons are "out-of-this-world" amazing (Maybe Last's are!) but I do know that bad macarons will be pretty bad.

Try some hand-made ones from specialized bakeries, if you're going to like macarons, you should try the proper ones. I don't find them especially amazing, but they are cool and the good thing is you can get a bunch of them with all different flavors to suit your taste. Man, I want to try Last's. Too bad Korea is on the other side of the globe.

I googled some big grocery stores from back home and found one that sells them frozen... I guess it's not a big thing in Germany then. To be fair, most of that sugary stuff doesn't really boom here. For example, Donuts are nowhere near as big as in NA. You can get them in a lot of places, yes, but there isn't a Donuts store around every corner. From what I have seen, cakes and general dough based sweet pastry still makes the majority of sells in bakeries. Actually, most _real_ bakeries don't sell donuts, just big chains that mass-produce for shops all over the country.

A lot of the stores are oriented towards East Asian tourists though, but there are some lesser known artisanal shops with good ones too. Since I moved to Canada I also saw some in Ottawa and Montreal and they were also alright, but pricey.

Dude I'm not trying to pick a fight here, all I am saying is that macarons aren't all that uncommon anymore How do you determine common in a niche and pluralistic world? Just because there in a few grocery stores near you, or even sold in a bakery, hardly means they've permeated the public consciousness. No one knows what macarons are in the greater scheme of things.

I would overall classify them as uncommon rarity in the city.
