What happens when Plexa tries to make lunch?

I'm not much of a lunch person. I really really don't like sandwiches which makes lunches quite difficult. Typically much lunches consist of bits and pieces of food that I just happen to have available. For instance, I usually just eat a pie for lunch when I'm at uni since its relatively inexpensive and I usually skip lunch all together when I'm at home.

Actually, I'm not much of a breakfast person either (since I'm usually rushing out the door or simply sleeping through it). So occasionally I go days without eating anything for breakfast and lunch. Since I'm trying to get better (see my last blog for details), I figured its about time I reintroduced breakfast and lunch back into my regular diet.

Breakfast was easy to rectify -

This is what God's eat for breakfast

Lunch, however, is a lot more difficult =[

My gf is currently studying to become a food technologist. This mean that she develops products for mass production to fill gaps in the market. This include developing completely new ideas or simply taking something that exists already and cutting costs, making it healthier or adapting it to a new target market. It's actually quite an interesting thing to get involved in

This was her first project - developing healthier waffles

At the moment she is working on developing a sports drink to "fix" cramping. i.e. you cramp, you drink the drink, and the cramp is alleviated. She has a report due at the end of this week and thus has been working like crazy to finish it.

Last year, however, she developed sandwhich fillers - a product missing on the NZ shelves (but available in the UK). They were really quite awesome; she developed a bacon salsa sandwich filler which tasted phenomenal. So I annoyed her about it after my colonoscopy and she agreed to make it for me since I was sick (I usually do all the cooking).

She made it. It was incredible. And I finished it within 3 days ... Since I had ran out - I demanded that I get more! But she instead told me to make it myself since she was busy with her own work. So, with her assistance, Plexa begun the journey on recreating some sandwich fillers so he can stop skipping lunch!! I decided to make two - one tandoori chicken and one bacon salsa.

The journey begins

The Bacon Salsa Sandwich Filler

I can't remember the recipe exactly, but if anyone is interested I can nag my gf about it and get it off her. Here's a rough list of ingredients;
- Tomatoes
- Capsicum
- Red Onion
- Vinegar
- Bacon
- Olive Oil
- Coriander
- Corn Flour

So first things first. I needed to get the skin off of the tomatoes. The trick to doing thing, if you didn't already know, is to cut a cross at the bottom of the tomato then pour boiling water over the tomato. After a while the skin starts to shrivel and then you can remove the skin easily. Once the skin was off, the tomatoes needed to be de-seeded.

Plexa deseeding the tomatoes

Yup, so after a while all the tomatoes were seedless and skinless. Next I prepared some capsicum for dicing and cut the bacon into sizable bits. Bacon is awesome, so I added way more than my gf did last time ^^

Tomatoes, Capsicum and Bacon!!

Next on the list was actually dicing up the tomatoes and capsicum. Dicing the tomatoes was pretty annoying since its had to get a regular shape, and you also have to be careful not to squish them all up. However, the capsicum was easy to dice since they retain their shape hence I can show you a pretty picture of diced capsicum

Dicing the tomato

Diced capsicum

Once both were diced, I chucked them both in a bowl and mixed them up realllll good

Tomatoes and capsicum all nice and diced

Next on the agenda was the BACON. So I gathered up the chopped bacon and threw it in a pan and began cooking it. My gf smelt that bacon was cooking, and being the bacon lover that she is, came over and took over the bacon station T_T

Neala cooking bacon

With her cooking the bacon, I now had to face the greatest enemy of any chef. Well, second greatest enemy - ONIONS (chilli is worse to prepare )

The enemy

I charged in, head first - dicing as systematically and as quickly as I could. It wasn't long before my eyes started getting destroyed by the onion. But I pressed on, and in the end that motherfucker got what was coming to him.

gg

The supermarket we went to earlier didn't have coriander so instead I turned to butchering my Italian Parsley plant to replace it. What makes it different form normal parsley? I have no idea. But now my plant has a brand new hairstyle haha. Anyway, I diced that shit up as well then added both the onion and parsley to the bowl with the tomato and capsicum in it. The bacon was set aside on a plate with a paper towel to soak the oil up.

This is me just starting to cut up the parsley

Everything gets mixed up!

Next I needed to add the oil and the vinegar. I have no idea what the correct amount I needed to add was, but I'm pretty sure I got it wrong. Regardless, I added it to the bowl and gave it another good mix.

Oil and Vinegar were next

Next I mixed about 3 tsp of corn flour with 3 tsp of water to dissolve it and set it aside. I then added everything in the bowl to a saucepan and brought it to the boil. I kinda left it too long and it melted the tomatoes T_T, but nevertheless it boiled! Once it was boiling I added not the corn flour solution and bacon to the mixture

The bacon goes in!

After returning the mixture to the boil I transferred it out of the saucepan and into a bowl to cool down. The bacon salsa sandwhich filler was complete!!

The sandwich filler is completed!! Loving the clean stove top btw

Tandoori Chicken Sandwhich Filler

This was an alternate sandwich filler created for Neala's project last year. It wasn't as good since she couldn't figure out how to get the taste right - but the original version using "Chicken Tonight" was pretty decent, so I decided to go with that.

Firstly, 500g of Chicken breast needed to be poached. So once the water was brought to the boil, I threw the chicken into the pot and 30mins later it was cooked! I replaced the boiling water with cold water so the Chicken could cool down so I could proceed to the next step.

This is what poached chicken looks like

The next step was incredibly painful. I had to shred the chicken. I don't know any tricks to shredding, so I did it all by hand... and that was a complete disaster. It took about 40-50 minutes to shred the chicken =[ what a waste of time.

Shredded chicken - almost an hours work right here

And now for the easy part haha. Next I got my jar of Chicken Tonight and opened it up. Added some yogurt and mint to it for flavor and spice control and then threw it into the pan to heat it through.

I feel like Chicken Tonight

Heating the mixture through

And viola! Tandoori Chicken Sandwich Filler complete!!

And thus, I now have enough good food for lunch for the next week!! (hopefully).

Aftermath

The stuff I made is no where near as good as the stuff Neala made for me. Mostly because I had the wrong herb and completely destroyed my tomatoes =[ Nevertheless, the result is edible and is still really tasty.

I learned my lesson though. Elves have no place trying to cook lunch - I'll leave that to the mrs.

The finished product - yum yum!!
The left is the bacon salsa, the right is the tandoori chicken

Hi TeamLiquid.

You probably know me as a writer for this site, or that guy who organizes liquibition when he's not lazy, or perhaps that guy who keeps trying to push liquipedia along. Maybe you just know me because I banned you, warned you, or sent you a random pm saying that your posts are awesome. Regardless, this post is going to reveal a lot more about me than you probably want to know, in compensation, at the end of this post in a spoiler is an article I had typed out on the eve of the Fantasy-Jaedong semifinal and has since been mostly discredited. However, it's still an interesting read so hopefully that makes up for it

I joined the TL staff in January 2008 after writing an article a day in my blog about various things in SC (Kingdom's best games, amazing moments in SC and what not). Thats basically what brought me to notoriety. Before that, I attained a mapdori account using the KSSN of one of my friends back at boarding school - and shared that with the community. Some cool people used that and created the infamous mapdori map pack - which was a very nifty little pack indeed!

But here's a lot of stuff you probably don't know about me (unless your skyglow1 haha). From 2003-2007 I attended Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand. From 2004 onwards I lived on site at boarding school which was a very unusual and amazing time (from which I have numerous stories haha). SKC (as it is abbreviated) is a Private Presbyterian school which in all honesty, isn't very Presbyterian. Outside of mandatory Chapel once a week, a school prayer at every assembly, and grace before Formal Dinner at Bruce House (the name of the Boarding School), there wasn't much Christianity at all. Oh there was Christian Ed, but that was more like discussing deep life problems like coping with death, and what things are important in your life.

I'm on the left - this after we won Debating Regionals in 2007
There's an article about my Scholarship achievements if you care, just click the pic to read it

Apologies for the small image, but this is the dining hall of Bruce House and where I ate for 4 years

SKC was an incredibly expensive school by NZ standards. Fees ranged from 10k/year through to 15k/year by the time I left and another 10k on top for boarding. Thats in NZD by the way, so if you want to convert to US a good guess it to reduce by 1/3.

Okay, enough about my schooling. The jist of my story starts in 2006 - my 2nd to last year of High School. There weren't too many like minded people in my year at Bruce House so a number of my friends were in the year above me. Since 2006 was their final year a bunch of them decided to take a trip to Hong Kong and Japan for a month. Since my school is incredibly rich (by NZ standards) we had people who lived in both countries who were very rich. We start in an apartment in Hong Kong which was incredible, and we spent time with the Yamashita family in Japan. Yasuhiro Yamashita, my friends father, is an incredibly accomplished Judo competitor (and even has his own wiki page, its the last link I posted).

All throughout this trip I had diarrhea. Indeed, since early December I had had diarrhea. Concerned, I had seen a doctor had had some samples taken; the results came back negative on everything. Since there was nothing my GP could do, I figured I would just ride it out. And I rode it all through my trip. The low point of my trip is when I was in Japan eating a special meal prepared at the Yamashita's place which involved a bunch of thin mushrooms. For some strange reason, they went right through my digestive system undigested and came out the other end intact - it was not a pleasant experience.

The diarrhea didn't go away after I returned - but for some odd reason when school started up against after the summer (NZ summer is from Dec to Feb in case you were wondering) everything returned to normal. 2007 was an amazing year for me - my debating team won reagionals, my chess team won nationals, I won my schools history prize, and I placed in the top 50 students in my year in Scholarship examinations included getting first in Music (as you may already know from that article). That pretty much set me up for university as well (debt free atm!).

As November (the examination period) drew to a close though, my diarrhea returned. Once again, I spent the entire summer with liquid shit which was not a particularly pleasant experience. I should probably mention here that since 2005 I have had reflux (i.e. heartburn) which also made things a pain. Since I had graduated from High School it was on to University for me! I decided to study for a Bsc in Mathematics (since I had done some University math papers at high school and found them incredibly interesting) but for some reason my diarrhea didn't go away this time.

Seeing as the doctor hadn't been able to determine what was wrong with me, and my diarrhea wasn't so bad, I decided to ignore it and begin the next phase of my life; coping with it.

When I say "not that bad" I mean that there wasn't any great pain and maybe I was going about once or twice a day but instead of my shit being solid, it was liquid. So it was really quite manageable.

So I went through 2008 working at TL and working at Uni. There would occasionally be pain trying to hold it in, like in an exam for instance, but overall things went smoothly. The first half of the year there wasn't anything noticeably wrong with me. My grades were fine, everything was on track. Second semester, the pain became more frequent, but it was just mild pain. Nevertheless, I persisted and despite a slight drop in grades (A+'s to A's) there wasn't any calls for concern. Oh yea, I should mention I also went to Blizzcon this year as well - my illness didn't go away there either. It was kind of awkward having it there, since there were so many people around all the time, but I coped with it and it was an amazing trip. (I have tons of photos lying around haha).

By the end of Summer 2009 there was really no improvement. My Summer School grades were decent and I was quite happy the way I was. I had learned to live with it and it was just a peculiar facet of my everyday life. I will share one inconvenience though - splash back. You would be surprised to see how far liquid shit can splash up in a toilet. Cleaning that shit up is not pleasant either, and it was a real drag to have to do every time. That really was the other thing that bothered me about my illness.

Things started to get worse in 2009, ie this year. The pain started becoming stronger and more frequent - but it was still manageable. I took 5 papers at Uni (usually you take 4) and they were quite challenging papers. Given my history, there should have been no major problems though. My assignment marks were excellent - all above 80%, commonly above 90%. Everything looked like it was going fine...

For my Maths 340 mid term test I was pretty confident. But during the 1 hour test my intestines hurt so much. The room was hot, and my brain just switched off. I ended up with a 23/40 for that test which basically fucked me for that course. But it was the first sign that things were getting worse. Over the 2nd half of the semester my intestines grew in pain, and really started to become an every day hindrance (especially with such a high work load). My coverage of Batoo OSL was terrible, partly due to my workload, partly due to my illness. There was no way I could do another OSL so JWD kindly took over for the most recent one.

My exam marks for Semester 1 this year were nothing short of bad - my illness had finally caught up with me. I ended up with B-,B,A-,A,A+. These were well below everyone's expectations for me (lecturers, friends, myself etc) and I knew that it was my illness's fault.

I was at one of those points in life where you know you have a problem, but you don't want to accept it. Within the past 6 weeks things stepped up to a new level. The pain became intolerable - I was incapable of doing anything for about 5 minutes when it flared up. I was going to the toilet way more frequently (in excess of 10 times a day, some days about 20 times). And I started waking up in the middle of the night needing to go. I was pretty much fucked in every way.

I cannot stress too much how painful it was to even survive at this point. I was coping through semester 2 fairly well (assignments are all above 89% so far), but the illness was making me excessively tired and I couldn't focus in lectures as I was either asleep, or in agonizing pain. My gf, being the loving creature that she is, basically forced me to go back to the doctors; so that's what I did.

I saw my GP again, finally, got some samples taken again and got referred to a specialist whom I saw yesterday. The specialist sussed me out and guessed that I either had Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Coeliac's Disease (some kind of gluten intolerance). To figure out which I needed a Colonoscopy and a Gastroscopy- which was scheduled for 9am today.

Mercy Ascot - where the specialist resides

So I spent last night drinking 3 liters of laxative drink. And holy shit, it was so terrible. It was incredibly salty and made me want to throw up. I eventually managed to get it drinkable by mixing it with ginger ale and managed to choke it down over the course of 8 hours (it's only suppose to take 4 T_T). Oh, in addition to that I wasn't allowed to eat anything except for clear fluids. Which sucked, seeing as I had last eaten the night before (I skipped breakfast to go to my appointment ). So yea, yesterday sucked, and I was shitting about 3-4 times an hour for 10 hours.

Nevertheless, I went off to have my Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy this morning at about 8am. We arrived early, paid a $2500 deposit for the procedure and I got changed into a medical gown waiting to be seen. After about 30 minutes some nurses came a whisked me away to the theater where I was given sedative and throat numbing spray.

The sedative knocked me out (it does that with some people) and I don't remember a thing.

I woke up, feeling like shit, and spent a couple hours just farting and shitting blood. It wasn't pretty. The sedation wore off and I was able to think straight again. I spoke with the nurse and she told me everything that had happened.

It's highly like that I have IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). My Gastroscopy came back completely clear, while my Colonoscopy revealed severe inflammation and other nastiness. They took a huge number of biopsies during the Colonoscopy - so my colon is bleeding (hence why I've been shitting blood all day) but it should be fine since the amount of blood is decreasing. The biopsy results will be in next week.

People have expressed an interest in seeing the photos, soooo...
+ Show Spoiler [Not for the faint of heart] +

Having the procedure done, I feel a lot better. Yea sure, I'm sore and bleeding and farting like crazy (they pump air into you during the procedure woop woop) but I feel like things are going to start getting better. My illness was taking over my life, and I feel like today I have taken a significant step to restore my life back to normal, get my studies back on track, and get on with my life. Even though IBD isn't curable (afaik), it's good to know what I'm fighting against - and that it's treatable (and may go away one day if I'm lucky). I guess knowing your enemy is half the battle, and I think my battle is nearing its conclusion.

I guess the moral of this story is get things sorted sooner =/ since me waiting around has fucked my life up quite a bit (i'll probably miss some research scholarships over the summer because of the effect my illness had on my studies). So yea, sorry for all the gory detail - but this was a story I felt like sharing today (since I've been ordered to bed rest all day haha).

Below is my discredited fantasy article, its still got some valid sections though so it's not a complete waste. Nevertheless I hope you got something out of my story above, and enjoy my article below.

Where is Jaedong going to go?

It's no secret, there isn't a team out there that doesn't want Jaedong on their team. Jaedong has the best practice mentality out of any gamer and apparently is a pleasure to coach. He is bound for greatness in many ways. Indeed, the team who snaps him up will have a huge shot at winning the proleague - as shown by Hwaseung. KeSPA's bullshit rules mean that Jaedong ultimately isn't going to get to make a decision on where he ends up, just that he will go to the highest bidder - so where exactly will he end up? Well here's my take on the matter.

SKT T1
[image loading]

SKT would be foolish if they did not put a bid in on Jaedong - after all SKT has searched for a long time trying to get a competent Zerg for their lineup. Their player "snatching" started a long time ago, and many Zergs have been snapped up in hopes of making SKT truly invincible. Zergs such as GoRush and July have passed through the SKT halls only to wind up slumping like crazy (and so the SKT Zerg curse continues).

Jaedong, however, has a legitimate chance of breaking this curse and simply dominating everything. SKT already has the best Protoss and best Terran in their lineup - adding Jaedong would make them truly invincible (at least for the time being). They would be almost like the KTF Superstar team consisting of Reach, Yellow, Nada, Nal_ra etcetc. BUT, even though KTF was a super team - they never won a Proleague title, so maybe (just maybe) it wouldn't translate into a title for SKT either... unlikely, but hey

SKT has a shitload of cash compared to other teams especially since they just won the Proleague. But really, they are already shelling out the big money for Bisu, Fantasy, Boxer and Oov to stay in the team. I'm sure their other players are on fairly good contracts as well. The question is does SKT have enough cash left over to purchase Jaedong? Or rather, will they have enough money to out bid the other teams. I can see SKT posting around 140 000 000 won for Jaedong, what Hwaeseung is currently offering - anymore and I think they will be paying more money to their players than they would make by winning the Proleague.

So while it is in SKT's best interest to purchase him, somehow I don't see it happening...

KTFail

Will KT put in a bid for Jaedong? Interesting question. It's no secret that KT have an enormous checkbook while they have not hesitated to flaunt round in the past. Of the "major" teams I think KT is most likely to snap up Jaedong. And here's why. They know that Flash is a kid wonder and will do great things. However, the rest of their team is so bad that they just missed out on the playoffs this season. With another awesome player on the lineup they can pretty much do what Oz did when they had Anytime and Jaedong - simply play Jaedong/Flash and then either Jaedong/Flash for ace. Scary combination really

So KT have the money, have the need, and they have a good environment. fOrGG already moved from Oz, so Jaedong wouldn't be completely isolated once he moved. While KT has a number of budding zergs like 815, Firefist and Hoejja, ultimately if they want results now (like they've always done) they will want to purchase a DEPENDABLE good zerg (not luxury lolol) and they can find that in Jaedong.

So imo, Jaedong will be headed to KT since they have the most spare cash and a great need for him.

CJ Entus

There's been a lot of talk about Jaedong moving to CJ, and why not. CJ is a great team. But I don't think they are very interested in purchasing Jaedong - well, let me rephrase, of all teams I don't think they the most interested in Jaedong and hence will only put in a mediocre bid.

Here is why. EffOrt is proving to be an amazing Zerg and is juts oozing potential. Kwanro is performing well in leagues, and could potentially come away with a title soon. Savior is still the Zerg god (and has a hefty contract to boot) and the vast majority of their lineup consists of Zergs. There is no need for another Zerg - since if they bought Jaedong it would make half their goddam roster redundant. CJ need a solid Protoss to make up for Much's departure or another Terran to give them some more depth. Jaedong doesn't play Protoss or Terran, thus, CJ probably isn't going to acquire him.

Samsung Khan
[image loading]

Rule of thumb; Khan never trades players away. Khan is like a family, and they stick together through thick and thin. Honestly, Khan has a very depressing Zerg lineup. Yes, great performed well last season, but really, do you trust him enough for him to carry the team? I thought not. Stork/Jangbi/Firebathero are a good trio and I really don't see January going out to purchase Jaedong for the team. I don't think Jaedong's ridiculous practice routine meshes well with Khan's relatively relaxed approach to practice.

Will Khan offer up a bid? Probably. Jaedong is too big of an asset to let slip by. But in reality - when they already have a couple stars on their team - they aren't going to be offering up much to purchase him and will lose the bidding war.

eSTRO

eSTRO is the best team Jaedong could possibly go to. A little known fact is that Jaedong and UpMagic are really close friends couple this with eSTRO's continual fail despite lots of budding potential and you have a team perfect for Jaedong. Jaedong would be an excellent choice for eSTRO since their best players are Terrans and Protoss - while Hyvaa is the only decent zerg. Jaedong/Hyvaa as a combo would be amazing since Hyvaa could learn so much from him and develop into an amazing player himself.

Jaedong's friendship with UpMagic, and the generally friendly atmosphere at eSTRO, seems like the perfect environment for him to be in. Sure he'd still be carrying the team, but it's not like Oz where he was literally a one man army.

The sad thing is eSTRO isn't the richest team of the lot - despite their sponsor owning the rights to Proleague (1 000 000 000+ won deal with KeSPA) so it's not like the money doesn't exist. It's just that they're not willing to spend it on their players. Maybe it's because they suck too much, or maybe its simply because they are stingy. I hope its the former, since shelling out for Jaedong would be so beneficial for their team.

If eSTRO are prepared to bid 200M+ for Jaedong I think they will be able to take him - and with that acquisition they will rise to the top.

I think KT has the best chance of getting Jaedong, but I really hope this is where he ends up.

MBC Game Hero

MBC are semi-renown for paying the bare minimum for their players. In fact, I'm reasonable sure that if you're on the B team you don't get paid at all. All of their FAs took pay cuts when they resigned; Pusan took a cut of over 30M won. They also let Bisu go to SKT since SKT offered them some nice cash in return. While MBC desperately needs a Zerg to pull them out of this shitheap that they've dug themselves - they aren't going to be putting out any figure which is going to win the auction.

WeMade FoX

WeMade is another team which could benefit from having Jaedong - indeed it would be the perfect complement to Mind/Nada. But hey, with WeMade not doing so well lately and Nada/Mind boasting amazing salaries for doing almost nothing and them signing Moon recently - how much money is left for them to spend on Jaedong? I doubt they will be able to do any better than 140M won (Hwaseung's offer) hence, WeMade doesn't have a chance at acquiring him. (Unless they pull out lots of $$ from nowhere)

Woongjin Stars

Woongjin have just lost GGPlay, one of their senior Zergs. Their current lineup consists of Free, Zero and "insert Terran here". While I think Woongjin will be interested in buying Jaedong, I think they will be more interested in buying Midas. Midas was once the best Terran in the world and has a huge amount of experience - an invaluable addition to the team (and for a good price).

Jaedong, ultimately, is too pricy for Woongjin. Indeed, I think that acquiring Midas would be better for the team, even though Jaedong would bring immediate results. Jaedong juts doesn't seem like a Woongjin player to me - Woongjin have always been that team that was once great, and ever since have been continually struggling to reach the top again. Jaedong isn't the answer to their struggle - he's the easy solution. Midas helps the team grow and become more dangerous further down the line; Jaedong simply glosses over the problem and leaves the rest of the team looking like shit (hi rest of Oz).

Hite Sparkyz

I don't really know much about Hite. They used to be a really cool team, but then they treated Casy like shit and Zeus retired. I think that Sparkyz will be posting a reasonable bid for Jaedong - but nothing game breaking. Perhaps 150M won at the most. Nevertheless, I think one of the richer teams will be more eager to purchase him than Sparkyz.

STX Soul

Realistically, STX's roster is packed. They just signed Calm for 130M won and Hwasin and Kal for something like 100M won. They're protecting their players and I don't think they're looking to expand it anytime soon. For STX their goal is to build on what they already accomplished this past season and I dont think they need Jaedong to do that. He's just not worth that much money - especially since STX is already shelling out a lot to retain it's stars.

So there you have it, my analysis on where Jaedong is going to go. I'm eager to here your thoughts on the matter!!

This was intentionally going to be a FE, but I couldn't be bothered adding the extra words required to get it up to that level. After all, this is a post featuring video content not my literary genius [or lack, thereof].

The intro video for any SC league is one of utmost importance. It sets the tone for the entire league. If your league has a shitty opening, chances are fans are going to be turned off until the Ro8/Ro4. This has certainly happened many times. And of course, us rabid fanboys are always eager to shed our worthless opinions about how awesome/shit an intro video is. At the end of the day, there are approximately 6 original intro videos per year for the OSL/MSL (less in the MSLs case actually) and about 1-2 for Proleague and 3 for GOM. Sometimes they produce special ones for finals - those have been excluded from this ranking.

The intro video has come a long way in 10 years. In the beginning, they all pretty much looked the same. Here is one such example.

Anyway, it took a while to break the mold - but it did eventually happen. To the best of my knowledge, the first intro video to break that mold made the top ten. It's fucking amazing with all due respect. We've come a long way since 2003 and well, the intro videos are looking better than ever. There are still a number of continual trends though, one in particular is the fact that year in year out the MSL simply has worse intro videos than the OSL.

I cannot stand the Avalon MSL intro video, which is basically a carbon copy of Lost Saga MSLs opening (which I also despised). On the topic of current intro videos, the OSL intro hype was certainly not justified. Sure its a new direction to take the OSL, but it was poorly executed and honestly, the progamers look stupid. There is that bizarre cut to Hwasin mostly naked for about 0.5 of a second as well - what the hell is up with that? Although I must say, it is certainly not the worst intro to come out of OGN (who do take home the prize of worst intro video ever - bottom three will be listed!!) so I suppose this intro is passable.

But enough of me rambling, let's see some of the best intro videos that the SC scene has had the honor of viewing.

Number 10

SKY Proleague 2007 Round 1 (OnGameNet)

There was a string of good Proleague intros around this time. Some really interesting themes were used, and this one comes off as one of the better polished and better executed ones. The lightening theme is nice, and the soothing blue color works extremely well with the music choice. This is an example of how much better they are at making intros today (at least on the whole). Nada looks so sick in this as well. Excellent execution of a simple, but effective theme

Number 9

Shinhan Bank OSL Season 3

This is a very very good intro - fully worthy of being the intro to the OSL that Savior won. This has excellent music choice and everything happens right on cue without any cutting of the original song. Thematically though, this is a rip of Shinhan Bank OSL Season 2 which comes as no surprise really. It didn't really push the boundary at all - it leeched off the previous seasons success. Standalone though, it is an excellent intro hence why it finds itself at #9.

Number 8

GOMTV MSL Season 1

This intro perfectly captures the essence of the MSL. The gritty feel of this intro correlates perfectly with the overarching MSL theme which runs through the Offlines, Survivor and the MSL itself. The song is kind of annoying though, songs that abrasive in their opening don't tend to make good songs for intros. A more gritty/grainy song would have been a better choice. Nevertheless, the theme has been executed to perfection and the finished product looks amazing. An excellent effort by the MSL, but not quite their best!

Number 7

Shinhan Bank OSL Season 2

Does this look familiar? It should, because this looks just like the intro for Season 3. This intro ranks higher for a number of reasons. Firstly, it broke the OSL mold - this was the intro that spawned a new dawn for OSL intro videos. Gone were the full on serious introductions that had dominated the OSL intro video space for the past 6 years and the new breed of fun loving, fangirl oriented, intros was born. The choice of music for this groundbreaking opening is excellent - it sets the mood for this OSL perfectly. Indeed, this OSL was groundbreaking on another level - Nada won the golden mouse during this OSL. An excellent intro video to match up with an excellent OSL.

Number 6

Pringles MSL Season 2

In my opinion, this is the best intro video that the MSL has ever made. Honestly though, I find the use of greyscale in this to be quite peculiar, and I despised this opening when I first saw it. With that said, it has grown on me since then. It's a very peculiar theme, but its one that I have never forgotten - a must have factor for any great intro. The song choice, as with most MSLs, isn't the best - but it's probably the best matchup they have ever done. The one scene from this that stick with me the most is Savior's amber colored eyes just glaring at you - truly a sight to behold. Nevertheless, this was a groundbreaking MSL opening and sore to height that the MSL has not reached since. I really like this opening, and I hope it grows on you as much as it grew on me.

Number 5

IOPS OSL

I tossed places 5 and 6 around so much it is no longer funny. In the end IOPS clinched it because its badass factor is through the roof. There are so many epic moments during this intro - like Reachs manly stare and the Lim-Jin death stare. The choice of song was perfect (despite the fact they cut it terribly) and although the theme was exactly the same as the seasons before it - this one had so much epic win in it that the boring theme is simply forgotten. This was easily the best intro from 2005 or before... Well that's what I thought before TL hosted the old vod night last year when I saw...

Number 4

SKY Proleague 2004 Round 3

Since I first watched this on Old Vod night - I can't stop thinking about it. Indeed, this is (to the best of my knowledge) the first intro video to break the standard formula for an intro and wow, it does an amazing job. Not only does it breathe a huge fucking breath of fresh air into the progaming seen but its the first intro where XellOs footstomps the camera - this is now his trademark move. This is such an epic intro and it breaks my heart that I couldn't rank it higher (it certainly deserves it), but the top three are just too amazing.

The Worst of the Worst

Now that you are all eager anticipating what the top 3 are going to be, you can sit back and watch some of the worst openings known to man kind.

3. Sky Proleague 2005 Round 1 (OnGameNet)

In between two of the best intros there has ever been there lies this disgusting abomination. The song choice in this song is so so so wrong. Back in the day, I used to love this song, but it is just so terribly used in this song. Having viewed this intro many many times I am now completely sick of this intro and I hope that I never see it again. Oh, to top it all off, the vast majority of clips used in this are stolen from other intro videos. How amazingly bad is that? Bleh.

2. SKY Proleague 2005 Round 1 (MBCGame)

I didn't know how you could make an opening worse than the previous one, but wow, MBCGame managed to do it - DURING THE SAME SEASON. This is an excellent example of a failed concept. The theme itself is actually pretty good - the whole sketching thing. But honestly, the music to accompany this is absolutely terrible and completely out of place. In addition to that the intro gets boring, really fast. I cannot stand to watch this intro any more. Impressively though, MBCGame did not make the worst intro (and this is by far the lowest they've sunk on the intro scale). That prize goes to none other than...

1. EVER 2005 OSL

Need something new? Yes we fucking do. It's like some moron found the mirror tool on his video editor and went - WOW THIS WOULD MAKE AN AMAZING OSL INTRO. Unfortunately, this amazing plan did not work out and the final product is the Progaming intro equivalent of an aborted fetus. This intro makes me sick just watching it =[.

Number 3

Bacchus OSL 2008

Believe it or not, but this intro was universally hated by the entire community. Over time it grew on us, but this intro is more than deserving of third place. This truly is a fan girl opening, and they went all out to appease them. Bisu looks sexy as hell. Jaedong looks like he's going to rip your fucking heart out. Savior looks like a fucking god - the intro has it all, even the legendary XellOs foot stomp (timed perfectly with the music mind you). This intro was another revolutionary opening and broke any remaining rules for creating intros. At the end of the day there is a very good reason why this intro was hated so much; but I can't talk about that just yet.

Number 2

Shinhan Bank OSL Season 1

This was not an easy decision, I tossed number 1 and 2 around countless times try to get it right. This is easily one of the most brilliant OSL intros I've ever seen. Every little facet about this opening is perfect. Exilia make the intro about five times more epic with Lifegame and it's an incredible experience. I've seen this intro so many times and it still gives me the chills when I watch it. There is so much epic win about this intro, the badass factor is probably the largest of all intros. The only weakpoint is theme and originality, but with an intro this good, those two hardly matter. As a small aside, all three Shinhan Bank OSLs from 2006 made the top 10 - they must have done something right!

+ Show Spoiler [Bonus] +

Number 1

EVER 2007 OSL

Amazing on every level. This intro matches the last on every point (except perhaps music) aside from theme. The theme chosen for this intro is the best that has ever been chosen. So good, that the TSL used a theme inspired by this very opening. Part of the reason why Bacchus was hated so much was because it came after this brilliant and inspired opening. Words cannot describe how great this opening is, and I'm sure you'll agree that it deserves the #1 spot.

So there you have it - Plexa's top ten intros from all of progaming. I hope this was enjoyable and I hope it brought back some warm fuzzy feelings of nostalgia for you .

  Plexa, May 15 2009

It's hard to beleive we're almost at the end of this round o.O - just goes to show what two proleague games a week per team does. Nevertheless, it seems that I am only writing these bi-weekly; that's mostly because I've never been so busy in my life T_T! In the face of this workload, it gives me great pleasure to be able to write about something which does mean a lot to me and write for a site that is awesome in exactly 37 ways (without degeneracy).

Moving on to slightly more relevant information, this past week in Proleague has been unmemorable to me. Why exactly I'm not sure. I can't recall, for the life of me, any series accurately or with any detail what so ever. Is this due to the quality of the games? I don't think so.. The quality is as high as ever... It's just that the things I'm watching don't scream out amazing. The few things I do recall are things like Jaehoon vs Lomo on Heartbreak (either Hiya or Leta.. can't remember) and Luxury sucking really bad.

This weeks Team of the Week wasn't easy to decide for that reason. Do I choose one of the more successful teams and highlight there awesomeness, or do I pick one of the worser teams and try win a fan boy or two over to the light side. Anyone who has been reading my shit for awhile will know that I invariably tend to writing about the latter.

This is an exception.

Plexa's Team of the Week

Hwaseung OZ

Hwaseung OZ hasn't always been Hwaesung, indeed, they have not always been Oz either. Hwaesung's origins lie in the ancient Ideal Space team. This team once harbored the greatest players in Starcraft history. How can I say that definitively? The team had (at one point or another) Boxer, Yellow, Nada and IntoTheRainbow (among others... I think IntoTheRain was on IS as well). However, when Reach defeated Boxer in SKY 2002, Boxer's Dad blamed IS's weak Protoss lineup and Boxer quit IS.

In addition to this turmoil, IntoTheRainbow was having a hard time with the coaching staff and he was not allowed to practice at the IS house and forbidden to join any other team until his contract expired. He left the team too, and ironically joined up with Boxer's new break-away Dong Yang team. Nada and Yellow were poached by KTF in 2003 and the team was well and truly dead.

IS abandoned their name and adopted the name "Plus" and acquired sponsorship from K-tec. This new plus team was vastly different to IS or OZ. They were the worst team in proleague/team leauge for many many seasons. Indeed, they weren't even allowed to compete in many Proleauges because they were so bad (lowest team played off against the team that didn't play in the last season, loser didn't play in the upcoming season) (actually this is a bit unfair, they did alright up until 2004).

The Ktec-Plus team. Who are they? No idea! Except that PuSan is the 2nd in from the left

Who was on this disastrous Ktec team? Players like Mumyung, Eliza and Pusan. The team expanded, just a little bit, when Anytime, Shinhwa and ToSky joined up in 2004. Basically, the team was nothing and lead by a player infamous for failing - who was later poached by SKT1 leaving the team stranded and helpless.

Doesn't that Coach look familiar?

I don't think the coach of Hwaseung has changed over the years - but I know the man has an eye for talent. He was at least one of the coaches for IS where he must have had some impact on recruiting Nada (who was later poached). He then recruited the likes of PuSan (who was also later poached), Anytime and most recently Jaedong (more about that later). It was arguably his ability to know which players had talent which kept Plus alive (Ktec dropped their sponsorship in 04).

In 2005, his hard work and persistence paid off - two of his budding talents bloomed and sparked an entire generation of Protoss (macro) revolution. Well, Pusan wasn't exactly on Plus at that point (he transferred to POS in early 2005) but the point of the story is that things were finally looking up. Players from Plus were finally transforming into the monsters they rightfully should have been.

Two friends meet up in So1 OSL

Anytime made his way to the OSL finals by defeating iloveoov. This was a remarkable achievement and he became the first player to reach the final of a Starleague for Plus since Boxer in 2002. Before the finals his coach had this to say:

On October 28 2005 05:54 instantbunz wrote:
Interview translated from Fighterforum.com:
===============================

They all thought it was impossible for Anytime to beat Oov.

The reason was simple. The dilemma of not having a sponsor(for the team), that there weren't any S-class players, and that the players' relationship between each other weren't close. 'Plus' team's coach always stated that he was confident, but it was a harsh reality. He was frustrated in every game.

But when you wish for it, it will happen. That is a game, and this is how a games turned into e-sports. The following is an interview of Anytime[gm]'s coach, of how he brought him to the finals.

-A player that you raised is going to the finals.
▶Yes. Though I was in the same teams, players like Boxer and Yellow were not players that I raised by myself. I really thank Anytime. His attitude in practicing and mindset was really great. It's really sentimental.

-What was the hardest part?
▶In the Proleague team games, Anytime had to give up many entries to practice for Starleague. Even though I knew that the team would suffer without him, I took him out of the games as much as possible. A lot of the team's burdens rested on Anytime. It was really difficult to plan out the Proleague player entries. The team games were important, but Anytime's semi-finals preparations were also important. That problem was the hardest to deal with.

-You're a coach that's really friendly with the players.
▶During the amateur times, I spent time with them as an older brother to a younger brother, not as a coach to a player. I treated them with high respect. It's because I think the relationships between each other are important.

-When did you first meet Anytime?
▶It was probably around July of 2003. In the Yuhsoo Amateur Game Festival I was accompanying one of our players, Mumyung. One of the amateurs that entered was Anytime. At the time, he got 4th place, but because he was a Protoss user, he had a huge impression on me. And so I suggested that he become one of the players, and also made him play several games online. The results from the practices online with him were so great that I told him to come up to Seoul, and he came and won a lot. This is how he was brought in.

-What is one thing you would like to say to Anytime?
▶Just like you asked, "Help me to succeed as a progamer," when you came up to Seoul, I hope that you don't lose the basics (novice attitude). And when you do succeed, I hope that you will be a person that remembers the people around you. I know that you will have a central role as the team's ace.

-What about the finals with Boxer?
▶Now that Anytime is entering the finals, I will invest whatever the team can to help him win. As a coach I have an ambition to raise stars. Anytime and I think that oov and Boxer are difficult opponents, but not impossible.

And some comments which further emphasize the context in which Anytime was playing in;

On October 28 2005 05:56 instantbunz wrote:
So touching ='(

In the past, people always used to use the team 'Plus' as an example of how poor the team is financially, and how poor the team is doing in the games. Now they have an extremely valuable player. Reminds me of July in the team POS (now they have Pusan, so all they need is a crazy Terran player).

On October 28 2005 06:57 priceless wrote:
Anytime should stay in Plus. It's the whole spirit that makes him so good. It's like July should be in POS and Nal_rA should have been in GO. The whole thing is ruined if you change team for most players. The only ones who remained as gods even when they changed teams are Reach and Nada.

Anytime eventually won the finals, and became a Royal Roader in doing so. But that was about it for him in the foreseeable future. Anytime could not remain at the top and suffered a huge slump - dropping back to the offline preliminaries. And so Plus's performance dipped, as one would expect.

Actually, right at the start of 2006 Plus died, and a new team was born. Yes, this was indeed Lecaf Oz - a name which everyone would come to fear. However, 2006 was not there yet. It was, however, the year they would expose the Tyrant onto the Brood War scene.

The two titans of the new Lecaf Oz team

Sometime in 2005, I beleive, Plus recruited the formidable Jaedong to their ranks. Well he wasn't so formidable back then - he was just like any other gamer. However, in 2006 he made his debut for Lecaf in April of 2006. (Actually before this he played in a rookie league, where he trounced everyone including the likes of free). His performance across 2006 was impressive and the following summary of statistics across 2006 clearly shows this;

Considering that this was effectively his first year as an A class gamer - this is phenomenal. Indeed Anytime picked up the slack later on in the year (in the fall) and reached the finals of Shinhan 2 OSL - as well as assisting in leading Lecaf to victory in proleague.

Oz also showcased the talents of fOrGG in 2006 and in 2007 they became one of the "teams to watch". This is all nicely explained by haji in his FE "Why Lecaf Oz will win the Proleague. Lecaf was looking up and were indeed the eventual winners of the Proleague in 2007 (along with Jaedong winning the Seoul eSports Festival, EVER07 OSL and GOMTV S4 MSL).

In 2008 Lecaf exploded, as most of you already know. With a beastly lineup of HiyA, fOrGG, Lomo, Backho, Anytime and lead by Jaedong - they dominated the 08-09 Proleauge while fOrGG won Arena MSL (over Jaedong), Jaedong won the GOM Intel-Classic S1, Backho became a semifinalist and Anytime joined Ace.

Where do they stand in 2009? Jaedong added another title to his already impressive resume. In fact, strictly speaking he added two - he also won the GOMTV Winners Match between himself and Bisu. And recently they've been on a tear once again in Proleague - and that is why they are my team of the week this week.

Jaedong

I've already ranted on about Jaedong quite a bit, but indeed he needs even more discussion. Jaedong is at the top of his game. There isn't a match against a single person at the moment that you would bet against Jaedong in. In this age where Bonjwa's a just myth - this is the closest you'll get to it. Any match he loses people immediately jump on him as if he is slumping - that just shows you the magnitude of his skill. When he's not winning at 100% there's something wrong; that's the sign of a Tyrant.

Indeed, Jaedong's Korean nickname is now "The Tyrant" (formerly Legend Killer) for his dominance over the Korean scene in the past 2 years. His skill lies between a mixture of raw talent, determination and practice, and avoiding the path of the night (because slumps don't exist). The result of this is arguably the best gamer at the moment.

Jaedong from when Lecaf was still Plus

Unlike Bisu he does not get cocky or arrogant, he stays cool and true to himself, his team and his roots. Unlike Flash he has the staying power to remain at the top and the consistency to perform on demand.

Jaedong joined Plus when they were the worst team in proleague, and they literally had nothing. He has been with them as they've grown into a force to be reckoned with. He hasn't had anything given to him on a silver platter - he has worked for it every step of the way; making a name for himself through dominance, not who he beat. This is why he is different from Bisu. Bisu defeated Savior which blew up his career and made him a celebrity over night. He's adored by fan girls and was poached by SKT with a huge contract. He was the superstar of Protoss - and he acted it. Jaedong, on the other hand never gave in to those pressures and knew what life was like on the other side. He maintained his commitment to being the best and as a result has many more golds than Bisu has (at least, with respect to golds that matter ie OSL).

The difference between Jaedong and Flash lies somewhere in the coaching staff and training environment. I get the feeling from KTF that they feel like they can buy their way to the top of anything. That and that their practice environment isn't the best. I don't know... there isn't any real reason why Flash is performing worse than Jaedong. There is more time for Flash though, he is only young, and has had to deal with a lot of pressure early on in his career (especially after cheesing Bisu out of the OSL - lol) and maybe all that pressure has finally caught up to him. As Jaedong's rise wasn't nearly as meteoric as Flash's I suppose he is more used to dominating - that's really the only explanation I can give for this.

Never the less, Jaedong is raping in Proleague and leading Lecaf strongly. He is raping Zergs left right and center on Battle Royal and as a result his ZvZ win percentage rose over 80% - a ridiculously impressive feat. Alas, Jaedong cannot make Lecaf perform well by himself - he has a fairly impressive support crew which have made the past few Lecaf games complete rapes.

HiyA

Of course HiyA isn't performing at the same level as Jaedong, but his performance is sufficient to force wins. HiyA, to me, isn't anything special. He has decent macro, decent micro, decent management etc. I guess the only thing worth mentioning about HiyA is his ability to perform the same week in week out. Because he is so consistent he was able to clean up in the Winner's League (almost stealing the spotlight from Jaedong) and is always able to take out a worse player.

Lomo

I'm not quite done about talking about HiyA, but I need to talk about Lomo first. Random aside; back when I first started Brood War my friend, MarineOnAStick, and his friend, DC. (dark coal), and myself used to hang out in channel Lomo of west. True story. Anyway, Lomo, unlike HiyA, is glamorous and memorable. I would say that his strength lies within his control. Indeed, he was first noted for his bionic usage (a sign of a players good control) while HiyA was noted for his Mechanical player (a sign of a players stability and macro).

Between Lomo and HiyA you have the spectrum of Terran players. The consistent arguably boring HiyA, against the inconsistent and glamorous Lomo. Lecaf has indeed, relied on HiyA for the reliable wins throughout both the Winners League and the Proleauge - but Lomo has stayed within grasp stealing wins off gamers with his absolutely amazing control. Together they have given Lecaf the depth required to go far in Proleauge - and indeed they complement Jaedong well. Obviously, a team needs their Protoss too so thats when they call on...

BackHo

When Backho broke out last year in EVER08 it was painfully obvious that he was not a top tier gamer. He played stupid, but he had good macro and that was sufficient. Backho himself in recent interviews has acknowledged that he was deficient back then. Then something amazing happened; both for the pleasure of my eyes, and for Backho's career. He fucked up his back. This meant two things;
a) I would not have to put up with his horrendous game play anymore (and not have to argue with people about his bad game play)
b) He got time to THINK about Starcraft, rather than play.

Thank god for the second one of those. He finally applied his brain to Starcraft and wow! His gameplay has become so much better. He can now outclass gamers with ease - and not look stupid while doing so. His PvP is sharper than ever. Indeed, he already had an innate skill in the matchup (see Backho vs Stork), but now he is able to back his play up with thought out plans and whatnot, and win games that he previously would have lost (ie he would now win the aforementioned game between him and Stork). His other matchups show signs of improvement (watch July vs Backho from EVER08, and July vs Backho from GOM; massive difference).

With Backho back, and firing at all cylinders Lecaf have a sufficient lineup to hold on to their #1 ranking. Jaedong-Hiya-Lomo-Backho is a four headed monster reminiscent of the epic July-Light-Sea-Pusan combination (which was later augmented by Bisu) which won the 2006 Proleague. Lecaf, as much as I hate them, are a great team and will do well for a long time to come. And as mentioned earlier on in the article, their coach is largely responsible for this. The man has an eye for talent, and as long as he is around the team will continue to thrive.

Oh and one last thing; I really really wish people would understand their team beyond the teams Star player. Each team has a rich history which I would implore people to investigate; it will give you a whole knew perspective on them.

Plexa's Team of the Week

Airforce ACE

I promised myself that these would be more "fun" writing than official TL news, but I don't know if that's actually being achieved Nevertheless after a week's hiatus I'm back with another installment of team of the week. And technically, they shouldn't win this week, but they should have won last week. And seeing as Ace probably won't win again this season - I reasoned that it's better to do them now than force it later on in the season.

So who are ACE? While the Airforce will probably deny it, ACE's origin is closely connected to the Boxer-Military Service problem that faced Boxer in late 2006. In 2006 Boxer received his letter from the Government drafting him into the military. He would join up into one of the military divisions in June/July 2007. This would effectively end his career as a progamer.

So the Airforce devised a clever publicity stunt. What better way to get people to enlist than appear trendy to the intelligent folk who follow pro-Starcraft? With Boxer soon to enlist the Airforce had a unique opportunity to exploit Boxer's popularity to birth a Progaming team. If the Airforce had a Progaming team, that would mean they would get lots of TV time and hence be a more attractive option to the Korean Males who are forced to do military service (and hence get more funding from the government!).

So in early 2007 it was announced that the Airforce would soon start up a Progaming team. The founding member consisted of recently retired progamers and those just about to enlist in the Airforce. This first group consisted of: ChRh, Clon and H.O.T-Forever. They were quickly joined by Boxer and Mumyung, and together those 5 gamers formed Airforce Ace.

Over time the Airforce roster was expanded to 10 and created some amazing moments in Progaming. Like the time they defeated MBCGame Hero in Shinhan Proleague 2007 S1 when ChRh won a marathon game over Bisu on Monty Hall, then Boxer defeated Bisu as well to claim the Ace win. This in addition to a variety of Boxer cheeses defined Ace for the first stage of it's life. Some of the new recruits had a minimal impact on the team; specifically players like Rage who did very little while on ace. Others, like Oversky, gave the team a breath of fresh air and revived the team when it was in a bit of slump.

Oversky went on to become one of the key players in the Ace lineup and went on to produce a number of cool games while on Ace. Including a host of awesome cheeses like the Sunken rush on Colossseum. Foru/Clon became the most successful 2v2 team Shinhan Proleague 2008 beating the infamous Khan team and the Reach/Zergboy team from KTF. They lead Ace through their best season ever and gave Ace that little bit of extra flair in the competition (Ace finished 11th in the 08 season).

There was some talk amongst the progaming scene that Ace should be disbanded due to its poor results. But a petition from the gamers themselves convinced the Airforce to maintain the team (they were obviously worried about Boxer leaving) and hence Airforce is around today. But it did make them produce some surprising results in the 2008 season.

By the end of 2008 the original 5 gamers had departed the team, and either returned to real life or rejoined the progaming world. H.O.T became a coach, Boxer joined up with SKT1, Mumyung became the Zerg coach for SKT while Clon and ChRh returned to the real world. To replace these gamers a few high profile gamers were recruited to the team - notably Anytime, Xellos, YellOw and Reach. Thus defining the 3rd generation of Ace gamers.

Anytime immediately started producing results for Ace and is single handedly responsible for Ace not being all-killed in the Winners League. The remaining gamers are all putting in an inhuman effort to turn Ace into a team which is no longer a push over in Proleague. They are taking steps to rectify their problems (like a lack of practice partners) and are giving the team 110% of their efforts. This determination is reflected in their games.

So what is the future of Ace? So long as their is competitive Starcraft there will be an ACE team. I envision that once YellOw/Reach leave, Nada will be called up in their place. There will always be high profile gamers who qualify for Ace that will keep the Ace brand alive - hence maintaining the team's popularity hence retaining its purpose. Ace is a special team, and not one that should ever be discounted - else you may fail to convert the easy points that Ace typically are. KTF fell into this trap last week; and those games inspired me to write about ACE for team of the week.

So who are the driving forces behind ACE this season?

Anytime

Despite the fact I firmly beleive that Anytime is the least deserving OSL winner of recent memory and that both his So1 and Shinhan 2 OSL runs were flukes, abusing players weak matchups and stealing builds from better gamers and hence appearing like he's actually good, Anytime is still the power player within ACE at the moment. It is painfully clear that this is Anytime's ACE team; when opinions about ACE are needed Anytime is asked, when Ace get 1-3'd it's Anytime that won the game and when the team needs support they turn to Anytime.

Anytime is leading by example and is posting the results of a leader (well a leader from within ACE at least). However, Round 4 isn't going as well as the Winners League did... and is yet to win a game from memory. With that said the games he has played have been very close and entertaining - such as his game against fantasy on Outsider. He's obviously giving it his all so he can help the team out once again which is good to see.

If Anytime picks up his game and becomes the ace he used to be, then Ace have a legitimate chance of defeating weak teams and causing more than a few upsets this year!

Oversky

Oversky is a member of the second generation of ACE gamers and thus is due to leave soon. With that said, his time on Ace has been more successful than most - and he has produced his fair share of upsets. While you could never count on him to win on any given day, he would always surprise you with a win when you least expected it.

Indeed that has happened in Round 4 already. Oversky seems to be charged with Battle Royal and is currently 2-0. While defeating Modesty isn't that big of an achievement, defeating the likes of Flash is. And indeed, his victory over Flash was instrumental in Ace's victory over KTF. And while the game was played on Battle Royal; it was by no means a walk over game. The game was very even, and it's my bet that Flash underestimated Oversky's economy after he saw Overskys 11 position empty of drones and just 1 morphing sunk (ie he thought the expo was new, or neglected) and thus proceeded to get crushed.

Oversky is a wildcard player, and with his crazy builds and his ability to force wins off good players is an amazing ability. Oversky is responsible for Ace staying afloat for the past year and a bit, and thus he is an invaluable player.

Reach

Fun fact about Reach: he was the first progamer to reach 100 wins in Proleague! There is a reason for this, and it's not because he's the Mantoss - it's because he used to be a 2v2 specialist with H.O.T and later YellOw, and Zergboy. In addition to his 2v2 skills, he is a very accomplished 1v1 player and has a Starleague title under his belt (amongst a few 2nd places).

Reach's transfer to Ace has reinvigorated him in my opinion, much like it has done to YellOw (more on that later). In this round of proleague we are seeing a Reach who is giving each match 150% and as a result has been able to become a better player than when he first joined Ace (unlike pretty much every other gamers on Ace). His win against fOrGG was voted as the best game of Week 2, and for good reason - it was amazing.

If Reach continues to put in this much effort into his games he could well go on to do great things while in Ace. Here's hoping he does just that, because Reach winning always makes for good games

+ Show Spoiler +

YellOw

As has been shouted from the hill tops, YellOw is reportedly practicing harder than ever. With this said, there is very little TV evidence of this actually benefiting YellOw - he's still losing, a lot. But there are signs of hope from the Offline Qualifiers - where he performed amazingly well making the finals of both MSL and OSL prelims.

The thing for YellOw is to translate this into points in proleague, as after all, that's all that matters in the end. Why YellOw is doing so much better in the offlines than TV may be due to his nerves, and lack of exposure to the TV recently, or maybe he's just been getting lucky. Whatever it is, that practice needs to start paying off else he will burn himself out again and become less motivated than ever.

YellOw has enormous potential on Ace, but if he doesn't start performing soon it's likely he won't ever perform at all....

Casy

Casy is quite a strange character in Progaming... He was originally dubbed the neo-Emperor but after a huge falling out with the OGN coach and hence receiving zero play time, he kinda faded into oblivion. Then he launched the drama bomb (with his coach, not the nuke) and joined up with WeMade where he almost made it into Ever2008 OSL only being stopped by some Protoss. He also managed to nuke rush jY - which lead to his retirement shortly after (he swears its unrelated, but we all know better).

Casy is back in awesome mode once again, and he has managed to qualify for the OSL - a massive achievement for an Ace player. Don't let his terrible run in the Winners League fool you - Casy is back to kick ass! And he is already 2-0 in Round 4, and as we have come to expect he is pulling out some pretty slick builds!

If Casy keep performing well Ace could have a very decent chance of taking even more games off teams. Casy certainly has the potential to do this; here's hoping the limited practice partners at Ace doesn't affect this too much.

There are many more Ace players I have neglected - like Gorush, Xellos, Daezang, Ruby and Darkelf and many more. Ace is a unique team with a unique purpose in PL - and despite them still being #12 on the table; they are probably the most important team in the league - the team that keeps old flames alive through military service. If YellOw, Reach, Anytime, Casy and Oversky step up their game like they are capable of, you have yourself quite an impressive lineup which is certainly able to win games, and probably matches as well. Only time will tell if this actually materializes.

For defeating KTF two weeks ago, and for being everyones favorite team in Proleague - Airforce ACE are Plexa's Team of the Week.

Plexa's Team of the Week

WeMade FoX

Oh shit its a new Plexa blog! So what crazy thing am I doing this time around. Well, given the huge interest in Proleague thanks to fantasy I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of these teams and get to know them better. The scene has changed so much since I was fluent with all the teams, so now is a good time for me personally to get fluent with all the new gamers that have come through.

Hopefully, each week I'll be taking a look at one team which I think has been interesting over the last week. The first week of Proleague had many surprises, the most shocking in my opinion was that of Fox beating both KTF and STX. Hence, Fox have become the first Plexa Team of the Week.

This is NaDa warming up against XellOs from Blizzcon

Firstly, who are WeMade Fox? Their origins come from the ancient Toona S.G Family (this was a progaming team!). which was around the time of the Ideal Space collapse. Toona quickly flexed its financial muscle in 2003 and bought out two of KTF's biggest names - the up and comer NaDa and the almost-champion YellOw. However YellOw didn't last long, and hurried back to KTF within a few months.

Yes, that is YellOw in the center ^_^

Toona did not just purchase big names obviously, the had to scout some talents out and recruit them. So within the first few years they had the not-quite-so-impressive-then-but-kinda-now lineup of Nada, Goodfriend, Silver, TheRock and Ogogo. In 2005 Toona became sponsored by Pantech and Curtiel.

The P&C Curriors had some pretty good success. They were a middle of the table team, kinda like Lecaf when they just had Anytime and Jaedong (and no one else). Nada became stupidly successful and kept winning leagues left right and center, while Goodfriend came the closests I've ever seen to winning a final, only to lose to July in one of the craziest Game 5's ever (in EVER2005 OSL ironically).

The team peaked in 2004 when they won the 2nd Round of the Sky 2004 Proleague against Soul. The won with a score of 4-1 if my memory serves me right. This would prove to be the high point of P&C's life though. Ohh yea! And they had a girl on the team, SunHee_gm. Not that she ever accomplished anything...

The team was pretty good, and they recruited more and more talent to the team like nal_keke and Mind. However, P&C always remained one of the smaller teams, a facet which is still true today in Fox. In 2006 KTF bought Goodfriend off P&C, and so ended Goodfriends career. Also in 2006 Curtiel dropped their sponsorship as the company ran into money troubles - so Pantech became the sole sponsor, and Pantech EX was formed.

EX was less successful than P&C because of a talent shortage. Nada, Silver and TheRock formed the core of the team - and the very fact that Rock was the core of the team speaks volumes about it's depth. Nada was still winning OSLs though - winning Shinhan 2, runner-up in Shinhan 3, and winner of Shinhan Masters. Despite this, the team struggled even more in 2007 when Pantech also withdrew sponsorship and possibility of EX being disbanded was very real. Eventually, WeMade picked up sponsorship of the team - and WeMade FoX was born.

FoX was a new beginning for the Toona Family, and a lot of the old names faded. The new team featured a lineup of Pure, Hero, Nada, Mind and Keke and they found immediate success in Mind. Mind became one of the top Terran players in 2007/08 after defeating Bisu in GOMTVS3 (in addition to Savior and iloveoov). Mind and Nada lead the team from here. The team hasn't done anything spectacular since then, aside from boasting some cool players.

NaDa

Yup, thats me with Nada =]

Nada has been the heart and soul of WeMade since forever. His outstanding career as a gamer did not start here, but it matured and developed here more than anywhere else. He has been the sole reason this team didn't become as bad as Plus or eSTRO.

Nada on Fox is very similar to Jaedong on Lecaf. If you ignore Nada/Jaedong, their respective teams royally suck. Well that was true for Nada up until 2008 anyway. There are always a bunch of mediocre gamers lying about on the team; TheRock, Backho, Goodfriend, Anytime - but none like Nada or Jaedoong. They are the single greatest strength of the team.

Nada has always been one of the greats, but as his form decline over 2007 he had to give up some of his position to Mind, who took over the teams effective leadership. Despite this, he is a strong mentor for the team and is raising Baby to be a monster.

While he has not entered the 4th Round of Proleague yet, he did do very well in Lost Saga MSL. I beleive he got a seed, which is pretty damn good! Nada is in this post because he draws the crowd, and the crowd love him. And we all hope that one day he will return to dominate the scene once again.

Mind

Mind is the true power house on the team. The teams performance has heavily relied on Mind's ability to perform under pressure and on demand. He rose to prominence when he defeated Bisu in GOMTV S3 MSL and was considered the second best Terran under Flash for half of 2008. His strength lies in his insane timing. His sense for this is unparalleled in the scene and has allowed him to push at the exact right moment to win the game without trouble; a truly impressive skill.

He has played one game so far in Round 4. This was against STX_Kal. This was arguably the most important set for WeMade to win as Kal is probably STX's strongest player. Now Mind played a really good game against him on Destination where he was able to defend of Kal's reaver harass with zero losses. With that advantage, he was able to push out with great timing and expand.

Kal was no pushover though, and was able to split the map and delay his defeat for the long time. Eventually Mind pushed out with a strong push and took the win for WeMade. This win ultimately allowed Fox to go on and play in the Ace set - where they won. Mind's victory here was critical to the team's success and shows just why the team depends on Mind to perform in Proleauge.

Pure
[image loading]

Pure has been the surprise performer from WeMade so far this season. He has played two games and won them both - upset victories which lead his team to two upset wins. He made quite an entrance in 2007 and people got really excited about his performance in Proleague. Then, for some reason, he disappeared from the WeMade lineup. Pure has only made a resurgence now - and it's propelled WeMade to the top on Round 4.

Against KTF he played against Luxury, and indeed, defeated him. In this game Pure showcased absolutely nothing special at all. He didn't have the flair that Bisu shows, he didn't have the brute force of Best, he didn't have anything. He was bland. His victory was nothing more than Luxury's self-destruction, rather than Pure's brilliance.

Against STX he played against Notice, a lesser opponent, and indeed defeated him as well. Once again he showcased nothing special. Just standard play executed surprisingly well. But then I noticed something. His observers, they were everywhere. He was making more use out of his Observers than most Protoss I see. The only other gamer that I've seen use Observers this well is Stork.

And then it dawned on me, Pure is a neo-Stork. He encapsulates everything about Stork's style, regurgitated in a new vessel. It's quite an interesting thing to observe really. Pure probably won't be the next superstar, but he will be a consistent performer this season; so keep an eye out for him.

nal_keke

Nal_keke has been on Fox since oh god.. 2005? He's been on it for ages. He released a lot of replays before that, and was friendly with the foreign scene iirc. Everyone loved Keke, but he never really amounted to anything spectacular. He has, however, been useful to Fox this season and is showing signs of improvement.

He has played a single game this season, against STX_Hwasin. This game was actually really intense and really close. Keke's micro was up to the task and his muta control was great. He pushed Hwasin to the limit, then Hwasin came back at Keke with everything he had. He used drops to distract Keke while pounding his front. Keke eventually broke and was forced to concede. But with that said, his form has improved quite a bit since last I remember him.

He has been consistently average though, and shows little signs of actual improvement. His ZvT skill hasn't really changed since he beat fantasy on Neo Requiem (I beleive). That was the game where he built 9 sunkens and muta micro'd like a mofo. If he can't improve, then he won't be too useful to the team - he needs to get better if he wants to be an asset to his team and propel his team up the ranks.

Shine[kal]

Shine has been another star performer for WeMade so far. It is very clear from his games that he is putting a huge effort in to win, no matter the cost. Each of his games have been strategical designed to take out better players; and thus score points he shouldn't.

Take his game against fOrGG. He abused Heartbreak Ridge to its fullest - literally killing him with Mutalisks. He was only able to do this by mining out fOrGG's mineral block at 7. When fOrGG scouted this, he was unable to prevent mining because he stalled for time by attacking with his lings - a game winning move. With that block removed, fOrGG couldn't get any Turrets up behind his minerals and the rest of the game was just Shine running amok with Mutas. A really cool game.

And then against Kal - the powerhouse of STX - he used a 2/3 base Hydralisk build. The build was scouted, but killed off a number of Kal's temples which made it look like he was going to go in another way. Couple this with Kal scouting the Hydra rush, and hence suspecting that Shine wouldn't go through with it - and you have one unprepared Kal. Shine easily killed off Kal, kinda depressing, but still a wins a win.

Shine has become the WeMade sniper, a position of enormous danger. If he keeps on putting in the effort like he is now, he will become a really dangerous weapon. Snipers are always exciting things in Proleague, so it's cool to be able to observe one in action on this team .

RoRo

who is Roro? He's some kid Zerg who managed to win some games last season and has become one of those promising Zergs. However, I beleive he was all hype. He got lucky a few games and hasn't really been able to show off any kind of flair, intelligence, grace, style, elegance or brutishness. He's like a plate of agar, boring and uninteresting with zero intelligence.

Take his game against Calm. Both used identical builds, just Calm played 100% smarter. Both killed off their Geysers to prevent ling run-bys and whatnot. Calm's lings ended up in the middle, Roro's were trapped inside. Calm's lings ended up doing some harass by killing off some of the Neutral buildings and hence actually came to some use int he game. In addition to that, Calm completely outplayed Roro in every respect.

I'm sorry Roro, you're just not ready for Proleague yet. You need to keep practicing and maybe one day you will be able to compete and not be out-everythinged by any non-crap progamer you meet.

And that is how I see WeMade FoX. How I view their history, their current run in Proleague and a few comments on their players. I hope you enjoyed it!!

  Plexa, Dec 20 2008

!!Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with Starcraft, and is fairly picture heavy

So in New Zealand at the moment, we are going through Summer. The days are long and warm, the Sun is harsh and burns us, but overall we cherish the beautiful weather. As an active member of the TeamLiquid staff, a Starcraft player, a Uni student and having a girlfriend - you can probably tell my free time is very very limited. As a result I don't get enough exercise. On top of that, I was thinking of things to do over the summer with my gf to keep her/me entertained and so I came up with the incredibly stupid idea of going for walks around Auckland (my home town).

The first of such walks would be to Fairy Falls in Waitakere. (why - tack - er - ee)

The Waitakere ranges are a good 40minutes drive from my house, mostly due to traffic, and are one of the more notable scenic places in Auckland. So yesterday me and my gf decided to head off to Fairy Falls for the day and eat lunch at the waterfall. So at 9:40am we went and bought some supplies (i.e. junk food and lunch), went back home, backed our bags and headed off to the Waitakere Ranges to go for what is essentially a hike.

We arrived at the parking lot off Mountain Road, which was basically empty, and prepared ourselves for the walk around the circuit. What we were going to do is walk clockwise around the track, but instead of doing the big loop, we'd cut across using the Goodfellow track so save us some time. With a clear plan in our minds, we strolled off down the path. Thankfully, the path started off as a gentle downwards slope which is so much better than an uphill climb. However, the downwards slope was putting pressure on my little toe and I knew by the end of the day it was going to be one hell of a blister!

My gf, Neala, climbing over some fallen trees

It wasn't long down the track before we faced our first obstacles, fallen trees. There were about 3-4 of these blocking the track all around the same time. However, some nice person had cut a nice little step in the tree which made getting to the other side quite easy (and prevented a number of gf dramas!). The next set of obstacles wasn't far off - lots and lots of mud. The track degenerated from a reasonable firm dirt road into a slippery as hell mud track. Somehow Neala managed to ninja her way around the muddy holes and didn't get her shoes muddy at all, I, on the other hand, just walked right through and got my boots covered in mud.

Neala emerging from one of her ninja paths

We continued on down the track, but were being harassed by 1-3 flies. Damn things. Somehow the smell of the chicken rolls we had packed was leaking out of the clingfilm wrap, powerade cooling bag, and my backpack and attracting all the flies. Annoying, but one must persevere against such obstacles! Nevertheless, the further we got down the track the louder the sound of rushing water became. It wasn't long before we reached the first of many stream crossings.

The scenery near the first stream crossing

We crossed over the same stream again and got another chance for some photos by some water.

Me next to a pool of water

We continued on our path, admiring the scenery and crossed a few more streams. Neala had become quite adept at navigating her way around the streams without getting her shoes damp. However, then she met this;

And she finally had to get her shoes wet. We continued to press on into the bush, and took a couple nice shots of the scenery.

Neala found a Silver Fern; New Zealand's national symbol!

Me standing on the other side of a stream

As we walked on further, the sound of running water became ever louder. And then, at long last, after turning one last left turn stood Fairy Falls.

First shot of the falls

Me in front of the falls

I climbed up a bit :3

A shot of the falls from my new elevated position

Me and Neala from when we were dipping our feet in the pool of water

A shot of the falls from the top

While the waterfall above is the major waterfall of Fairy Falls, there are a number of small waterfalls above that one which "feed" the main one with water. Let me just say, after walking up 12312312 stairs to get to the top of the falls you get really hot and sweaty - and those pools of water just look so inviting -.-;

The first mini-waterfall

A shot up from the first mini-waterfall up to the waterfalls above

Between each mini-waterfall there were approximately 20 almost vertical steps. Oh, and down at the main waterfall I had completely soaked by boots in the water and they were now weighing about x2 more because of all the water inside them. Thus these steps/vertical bits were incredibly difficult to go up for a unfit person like myself. Nevertheless, both of us managed to drag ourselves up more flights of stairs and grab some more photos.

The next waterfall up, damn that pool looked inviting :[

As we slowly navigated our way skywards, and away from the waterfalls, the canopy started to open up in places and you could get some really nice shots overlooking Auckland.

Then finally, after dragging ourselves up more steep track and Neala getting incredibly paranoid about having gone the wrong way (because we hadn't seen any signs giving us the path direction). We finally stumbled upon this;

You have no idea the relief seeing this sign gave

The Goodfellow track was not nearly as exciting as the main track, probably due to the absence of a major waterflow. The start of the track was a nice downhill run, which was very welcome after the climb we had just endured. Upon reaching the bottom we crossed a narrow valley with a mini-stream, and then ascended another mountain. The Goodfellow track climb was far harder than the stairs encountered previously. There were about twice the number of stairs, half the scenery, and extremely long. It literally seemed like we were climbing upwards forever. However, once again signs showed that we were getting near the top and we were able to get another good shot of Auckland.

[center][image loading]
Auckland in all it's glory

A fern unveiling in the form of a Koru (co - ru), another beloved NZ symbol

And then, the hills stopped and we let out a huge sigh of relief as we glanced upon

The end of the Goodfellow track

As we continued on our way back to Mountain Road we passed the Rangers house - which was a nice change from the Native Forest. And then it was back onto Old Coach Track to head back to Mountain Road. With about 20~mins left to walk, the damn blister on my toe popped and I was flooded with pain. Oh my god, I cannot tell you how much a popped blister mixed with sweat and stream water hurts. Somehow I managed to persevere and hobbled along the path as best I could.

A wooden track a few minutes from the end of the track

And then, it was all over and we had arrived back where we started. I ripped off my shoe and to my surprise it was not bleeding - but it was sore. But all in all it was a great walk, and I got some nice shots of stuff. It was also nice bonding time with my gf as it was literally just us two the entire time (never ran into anyone else on the track) so it was a really great day Hopefully I'll do some more walks around Auckland soonish and they'll get blogged too haha anyway!

The fusion of two distinct elements has always amused me. The new and unique things that present themselves to you when you have the merging of two distinct identities is always a wondrous thing. This week my life has been completely entranced by my recent discovery of a band that draws together two completely different music genres into something brilliant. Those who know me will know that I love metal, particularly melodic death, and that i love trance and yet it has never crossed my mind about what would happen when these two things met.

This is the product

As far as I am concerned, its a brilliant masterpiece and indeed Blood Stain Child's most recent album has been spinning on repeat for the majority of this week.

Fusion in starcraft comes in slightly different forms. Very often we are presented with maps which are the fusion of two ideas or multiple ideas into a single entity. I love new maps, and the new set of maps has certainly lifted the bar in terms of fusion of concepts. The next most common is the fusion of styles; Jaedong is often referred to Savior with JulyZerg control (or at least was), Best can be thought of as PuSan with +10 Intelligence, Flash can be thought of the macro of iloveoov coupled with the mechanics of Nada and so on. But now we are faced with a new kind of fusion, the fusion of a map designed in spirit of the pre-2004 macro invasion with the macro intensive play of progaming today.

That's right, as we all know raid-assault is coming back with it's freakishly outdated design which is just so outdated it mayaswell be a concept map. Nevertheless, the map provoked some interesting play, particularly during UZOO MSL, perhaps the best MSL in history. One rather cool aspect about the map, is that it favored air units because of the short distance between mains, but long travel time. So that meant that in TvZ Terrans were always going to open with tech -> wraith or some variant. Zergs had their fair share of cool counters, but none quite the magnitude of JJu's epic counter

+ Show Spoiler +

But Raid-Assault has also been home to the making of legends. It was instrumental in YellOw's victory over Nada in the snicker's league. The opening game of the Savior vs Reach final was also held on this map, and with it ushered in the era of Savior dominance.

Even Boxer left a favorable impression on the map

GoRush also cited his favorite game that he played on MBCgame as being one on Raid-Assault;

But at the end of the day I have to wonder how exactly progamers are going to tackle this map. Will we see the same old same old, or will we see even more evolution? My gut tells me we are going to see player still try and use their macro hungry builds with expansions far too early than they should be and to that effect I dont think we'll see many non-Terrans around. Sure PvT/ZvT are playable, but given how the new Terrans are playing this map should be a haven for them. But at the same time, maybe the advances in muta micro may make this map more playable ZvT?

With proleauge imminent, this is one map to look out for and I will be following each game with interest
