Again, I have a problem that TeamLiquid has to solve. This isn't as trivial as the last problem though. So, I've mustered up the motivation to actually play Starcraft instead of simply watching Starcraft and stalking IdrA. I'm doing pretty good. I'm working my way up to Diamond league, and I'm learning how to fend off cheese at a decent pace.
But while my APM is fine and dandy and my strategies and timings are up-to-date, I always forget one thing...I forget to breathe. I don't know why, but when it gets to 3 base play and I have to start multitasking like a madman, I stop breathing. I hardly notice it during the game, but after my opponent GGs, I gasp for air and take a minute to recoup. And my friends (on skype) always laugh at me because during the game, I apparently breathe heavily at weird intervals.
So TeamLiquid, I ask for your help again. Please give me tips on how to breathe while playing Starcraft 2. I think it may be detrimental to my health and play in the long run.

This is dangerous. I highly recommend you get a playlist that goes, "Breathe in, breathe out," similar to the ones you always hear about in blond jokes.
|
Try a game or two focusing on inhaling thru the nose and exhaling thru the mouth.
|
play some music and hum to it or something? I dunno man D:

Hmm sometimes when I try to get to sleep I concentrate really hard on doing nothing and then I have to gasp for air, what I do is just relax, so don't be consciously thinking about breathing as it will just annoy you.

I think someone needs to code something like an APM alert - a breathing rate alert.

i thogutht this was going to be a blog a bout how some times u forget to breathe, and i was going to read that people are as dumb as me sometimes

I'm pretty sure I'm as dumb as you.
Either that or this office is really stuffy.
|
Sing while playing, that will force you to either breathe or pass out, your choice.
|
its not necesarily a bad thing as long as you don't faint and even if you do its not like you are gonna die :/
so if those two aren't a problem anyways then don't worry about it too much also you need to check how frequently this happens :/
|
also play your music louder to the point where you cant ignore it, haha

I don't see how you can relax during the late game as Zerg ahaha.

Kanye West ft Ludacris - Breathe in Breathe Out Thats ur song buddy, and its good =)

Goddamnit...I am now breathing manually. Maybe keep a small glass of water near you and take sips every so often? That should get you to breathe a little bit more often.

If only they had good rappers in that song it would be better.

Breast feed? What? Hahaha

You need to play music or talk to people while you play.

Hey hey hey, Luda is a great man, and Kanye is, well i think he made a few good songs one time.
Oh and OP, i think you should just not breathe, if you end up winning your games, why would you want to change? I am pretty sure that too much O2 can cause you to make mistakes. I reccomend holding your breathe the entire game. Come back and let me know how it goes.

How people got trolled by his post is beyond me.
Seriously? I don't even feel the need to explain myself; his fairy tale is utterly ridiculous. Most likely he made up the story, or exaggerated it way out of proportions (holding your breath in anticipation/fear/excitement happens, but not nearly to an extent (3-5 mins)where your brain cells would starting dying roflcopters).
Just putting this in perspective:
Yah, I breathe pretty heavily or "gasp" for air as well after an intense macro game. And oh shit, TL I need your help too; whenever it gets to 3rd base play with girls I have to start multitasking like a madman, I stop breathing. I hardly notice it during the game, but after my opponent GGs, I gasp for air and take a miinute to recoup. And my friends (irl) always laugh at me because during the group orgies, I apparently breathe heavily at weird intervals. HALP?

i'll offer two parallel suggestions: 1) consider meditating. the goal is to spend your energy concentrating on your breath. the rhythm, flow, and maybe most importantly, the depth. it's important to keep your spine straight with a slight arch in your lower back. your chin should be pointed down and gently tucked, but don't get carried away. so imagine a taut string on the back of your head, that's attached to the ceiling. now for the tricky part. focus the mind on your naval area, just below the belly. take a number of slow deep breaths. imagine this area expanding like a balloon on the inhale, and deflating with your exhale. after your controlled deep breathing, just sit and try to mind only your breath. it may be useful in the early stages of practice to count along with your breaths, as it is inevitable thoughts will try and steer your attention elsewhere.
2) remind yourself to breath in your pregame checklist or mantra. something along the lines of, "workers, supply, minerals, units, scout, breath, etc".
Hope this helps

Thanks for proving my point, falling back onto "oh it was just for fun..."
Was it a silly blog when you asked for help? It was silly because you were worried about your health and play in the long term right? So silly indeed, attracting such non-serious replies from the likes of stahlvogel suggestion meditation and whatnot lmao.
Anyway, I killed your fairy tale blog as intended. Have a nice day.

You don't want to split your focus between breathing and playing sc2, you'll end up playing worse. Instead, get one of those respirator machines they have in hospitals.

I also think you should get machines to replace your other bodily functions to maximize your SC2 as well. Get a Heart machine to pump your blood for you, get an IV for fluids, and get some fancy pills so you do not need to eat. This is the best way to fix your problems.

Lol, something similar tends to happen to me. While I don't get short of breath or breath heavily, my right leg seems to go numb for a bit in a fight when I have to micro intensively (mainly during those pesky all-ins). When I macro, even if its a long game, I'm extremely relaxed lol. Maybe you could def. listen to some chill music in a decent volume (higher than game sound). I recommend HasHe and Spanishwa's playlist, they do have some great songs in there.

You guys are pretty much encouraging the materialization of the ultimate gamer:
|
What if you tried to talk while you played? Can you commentate on your own game while you play it? It's impossible to talk (at least for the length of a game) without breathing. I use this trick with running. If I can still talk while I'm jogging, then I know I am not running too quickly.
|
as said before, Prodigy - Breathe. lol or just learn every 2 base timing you can and you'll never have to worry about reaching 3 bases!
