...really pisses me off.
I don't know why. Surely I should be rejoicing that video games are becoming so popular. If someone becomes competitive, that's another person I'm better than.
But I just get really mad when someone says how awesome their headshot was in Halo 3 yesterday. Or how much better than another person in Guitar hero. Or what level their Warrior is, or what quest they completed on runescape.
I'm not a dick about it or anything. In fact, these people don't know that I'm a gamer. Most of them don't even know I exist, so its not like I confront them or anything.
Anyone else?
|
I only get annoyed when people think winner = fun EVERYTHING ELSE DOESN'T MATTER that kind of mentality pisses me off it's a fun sucker imo. I'm about the adventure not the end.
|
ye but they dont piss me off, they doing nothing to me are they?
let them be, dont torture yourself (or invite them to a SC 1v1)
|
I get annoyed when competitive/tournament level gamers want to ruin everyone else's fun by turning a fun hobby like games into an X-treme sport.
People play games to have fun, why should you be pissed off about that? No one gives a shit if you're good at video games if you can't even have fun with it. Like when I play SSBM with some friends who play in tournaments and suddenly I'm a faggot because I like to use items.
Games aren't always about winning and have the biggest digital penis.

it just sounds like you need to lighten up. my advice is to ease up on the proper typing, maybe start smoking weed?

What's wrong with someone enjoying video games; I thought that's what games are for? Do you get mad when people talk about their favorite scenes in a movie, or their favorite song from a band? It's all entertainment, you shouldn't get upset.
|
what's wrong with people talking about games they play...?
|
Yeah, I have a lot of friends like this actually. With other stuff though, like music.
Just chill out and don't get pissed that other people are enjoying stuff.
|
Who the fuck cares? People are enjoying their games, not everybody has to like Starcraft

A lot of people have way more fun playing SSBM without items than with them. You are taking the opposite extreme - not everyone wants to play the most easy/luck based version of a game because games are about "chilling out" - they want some mental stimulation/challenge and that IS fun to them.

No yeah, that's cool. I like playing with no items often times.
But it's like I shouldn't be ridiculed because I enjoy playing with items. It doesn't always have to be the most x-treme skill based thing, or the easiest/lucky thing. Just whatever is more fun at the time.

Fun to me is winning. Mainly because I like things to be this: 2 people using their brains to their fullest ability to acheive a victory. If this isn't happening then it isn't fun. Because otherwise their is no point to the sport of it. Might as well be playing against a computer

Meh. It's a little the opposite for me. I don't exactly care if gamers talk about games a little but when you are near one or with one or something, and the first thing they always bring up is a video game, I'm like "dude wtf, that's all you talk about.". When there is a silence they will start talking about video games, and when I leave to say bye or something they are like "dude when you get home you should go buy WoW and play it with me!!!1!11!!!" THEN it pisses me off. Seriously, it seems like they have no life.
No offense to any of TL(im a member too after all), because it is a site that is based around a game, so I don't consider TL a part of that group I hate. Unlike people who bring up video games when it is completely off-topic like when me and some friends are at the theater or w/e and one of them stops paying attention to the movie and brings up video games I won't hesitate to be like "DUDE, YOU ARE A FUCKING FAGGOT, STFU AND WATCH THE GOD DAMN FUCKING MOVIE!!!!!!"
EDIT: LOL just read yubee's comment :D
|
I don't think it's about being competitive or not. I think it's the way of talking about games which matters. If some random casual dude wants to go into debate with me over SC2 being good or not based on SC:BW facts I get pissed off.
But I don't care if the casuals are talking about Halo3 or some shit like that. This just goes for internettalk, I don't talk seriously about videogames with people I hang out in real life. The only exception was SC when I used to play with some guys out of my town, but they all quit and I don't play other games (competitively).
|
i live in a country where dota is really being played everywhere, and it bugs me out everytime in public when i overhear people talking bout dota
|
I'm on the same page as you. I constantly get into arguments about games taking "skill". Obviously they are oblivious to what real skill is as far as playing a hard game. But yeah, like I said it pisses me off, I shall not elaborate any further.
|
i get into arguments on game skill often. i even got into an argument about which takes more skill: playing SC or WoW....
|
Why would somebody brag about beating a quest in runescape? I had quit playing that game 7 years ago and picked it up around a month ago for nostalgia and I already have only 4 quests left undone pvp is the only fun thing about this game.
|
lol this reminds me of when i heard two kids in my programming class talking about starcraft. I heard starcraft and im like oh sweet people here play sc! im thinking about joining in the conversation then i listen in and they are like "yeah i love sc i play on fastest map and get a million carriers and type in power overwhelming and just kill 2 comps at once!" and the other kids like "yeahhhhhh man!!!" and im like okay nvm.
But yea i think starcraft players or other e-sport gamers tend to think about games based on skill where the majority of your everyday gamers just play with their friends for fun. Think about it, we are actually the minority and they are probabally the ones thinking "hey isn't it annoying when competitive people talk about games and all they care about is how much "skill" their game takes?"
|
It's funny. Recently met someone who knows SC, and has played it for as long as I do (1998). So then I asked him how good he is, and he said "not very but not terrible either". I asked if he knows this website - he said no. I asked if he knows about Korean SC progaming - he said "yeah, those guys are so crazy, they even memorize the hotkeys and use mostly the keyboard" ... and I was just like "lol" - because yes, he really uses the mouse to click on "attack", "stop" etc. And then he thinks he's not terrible. But he hasn't played on BattleNet for years (and isn't interested in it anymore), so I guess it's just in comparison to friends. We didn't follow that topic anymore then. But yeah, it's funny... bad players often have no idea what skills are required to be at least an average player, and how skilled the best players are... they don't have this overview, so anything they say about skill is probably false. And I guess this type of player is also the most likely to accuse you of hacking in pub games.

The only thing that annoys me about casual gamers is that their entire gaming experience revolves around the graphics. They'll be like, yeah that game was fricken awsome, did you see the graphics on it? And of course they are talking about a game with the gameplay depth of a paddling pool. And if wasnt made within the last 2 years, it must be a bad game...

games are for fun most people probably play for a different reason, which is fine. but keep in mind that you're the exception, and really if anything people should be putting up with your focus on winning.

I agree Doc.
I used to play competitive CS which became really repetitive after a while and I became really bored with the whole idea of CS, but then I played in public servers with friends from school who sucked hardcore and played non-competitive maps aka "fun maps" and I guess that really brought life back into the game for me.
: ))
So.. yeah don't hate on the people who are just playing for fun.
edit: yes i'm talking about you, linkin_pork and saxy.

I can play at a fairly competitive level in a lot of FPS games (except SC rofl) and still have a lot of fun. Usually, playing a scrim/match with a team makes a game 10 times more fun. There is definitely a borderline between casual and competitive, but everyone still plays for different reasons.
I laugh at some of the funny comments that some casual gamers make, but it's not too much to get riled up about. Starting an argument about it would look retarded (and I'm sure no one here does, I'm just saying). It's just a fun hobby, and like you said, you should be happy that more people are becoming involved with it.

Crysis immediately comes to mind... man, that game failed.
It's funny seeing people complain about low framerates in FPS games when they're just setting every possible graphical setting to high, and saying the game looks like crap if they lower anything. I've come by a lot of people who talk complain about this.
|
I don't generally have problems with casual gamers talking about "HEHEHE I MASS 30000 CARRIERS AND KILL EVERYTHING HEHE" They are annoying at times, but only when they speak too highly of themselves. That's when you just win them and laugh at their claims of beating you with 600000 bc's.
And like Fen said, the people who play a game entirely for the graphics are the ones that really piss me off. You ask them: "why do you play that game?" and you get some lame response like "cause it's pretty!!" Pacman didn't have crysis-esque graphics and it was still heck of a fun game.
|
Too bad "casual" gamers are the majority nowadays
Anybody with half a brain can make something that is fun. Originality, balance, and depth are harder to come by, but are sadly not required and hardly ever seen by most people.
|
Lol alot of people already summed up my thoughts about games being for fun but this one thing people ALWAYS do pisses me off.
My friends know I play starcraft so at every single goddamn opportunity (a few of them), they're always asking me "When is Starcraft II coming out?" Even when I say, "I don't know," or "Starcraft I is a perfect game" or "I'm not that interested in SCII" etc. etc. they keep asking me in a tone where Starcraft has become obsolete somehow and somehow its insta-buy once it comes out, with no care to how the game looks/plays/feels.
Damn. Okay I don't get that angry but it does get annoying.
|
they'd die out in the wild.

They are just excited about their hobby. Why would you care

I don't really hate casual gamers, because it allows me to own them. But I really hate how they have been tainting the gaming market, where companies try to accommodate for the casual gamers instead of competitive ones. *AHEM* SCII + Brawl. Don't get me wrong, they're still fun, but... They could be better without casual gamers stealing some of the market.

Shouldnt games be fun first and foremost?
I dont get it. Lets just look at traditional sports, for every person that is member of a team and plays competitively there are many others that just play for fun. And if we think about it, there would be no profesional players if there were no casual fans to pay the tickets and get to the stadium or to watch the games on tv.
I beleive it is the same un videogames, without millions of casual gamers to buy the games, there would be no competitive games or casuals for that matter.
I think its elitist to consider yourself the superior gamer just because you play a game in a competitive manner while others dont.
Games are created to entertain people as their first objective, so i dont see much logic in bashing people for taking games not so seriously.

I could careless about the casual gamers, it's those who say they are hardcore gamers that piss me off. I had an argument with a friend a while back where he said that he just bought a new ultimate gaming keyboard. He plays WoW and is obsessing about how he's a huge hardcore gamer. Then he found out I played Starcraft and he watched me play a game, and said that I need to move on because its a old game, and not fun anymore.
God that pissed me off.

God that pissed me off. Haha I think new keyboards are kind of stupid. I went out of my way to buy the most generic standard keyboard possible, basically the closest replica to my 10 year old one...
When my friends watch me play SC they are like "wow he is so fast." Apparently 150 apm is scary to normal people.

Yeah, I have some friends who can't watch me play because watching my screen gives them headaches. 250 apm is like insane to them
I have a friend who wanted to watch me play starcraft (he used to play it) and after a game was over, he told me "You're moving too fast you need to concentrate on one thing at a time"
|
I find it funny when people on youtube say "wow that terran (Boxer) was awesome" on a progame then say something like "starcraft is like a sport"
It's like there's so much they don't know but everyone started somewhere. Just be nice, either don't talk to them or help them get better.

God that pissed me off. fuck I almost spat water all over my computer.
When I went to my elementary school reunion I met a girl I was close with when we were young. She was apparently into games and we started a conversation with it. I asked her which is the most memorable game of her life and she said Final Fantasy X. I told her FF9 is so much better and she replied
"I don't like Final Fantasy 9 because the characters look too childish. RPG characters should look realistic like Final Fantasy 7, 8 and X"
I wanted to choke the bitch so hard.

Your friends must be REALLY competitive to insult you.

I had an amusing interaction with some random Chinese kid in the library last week. He asked me if I was Korean, and when I said I was he asked me if I played SC. I said I played Zerg and he immediately said "oh so you rush".
As the conversation went on I found out he's a WC3 player and he doesn't know anything about SC. I was kinda disappointed.
