Afreeca post That entire post recaps BW and Sonic's history, all new info is really just this:

Sonic is looking to make SSL11 happen be it through his or other sponsorship and with OGN, but for that, he of course needs the fans' help!

Hi all, this is BJ Sonic, currently CEO of Sbenu and Sinbal Farm and SonicTV representative.
I still remember clearly, when exactly 15 years ago, I learnt BW from my cousin, and got deeply hooked onto BW via OGN. That was really crazy haha
I started the amateur BW league in 2006 and aside from my time spent in army, I've been consistently hosting the leagues for 8 years.
I first started this league for the sole reason of the love for the game, and I've tried many things to transit my league from an amateur to a professional one.
I've been cursed at by many for trying to run the Starleagues like a business, and I've also heard many comments about why I've been running a dead game since the end of TVing OSL.
I think there were many doubts about the revival of Brood War after the end of TVing OSL.
When everyone said it was tough, I continued to host the online tournaments and also hosted the first offline league since the end of TV broadcast of Brood War. Many continued to doubt everything about it, but I persevered.
I spent one year trying to get OGN caster Kim Carrier on board, and also remember making money out of nothing trying to host the 7th Sinbal Farm Starleague.
When the 9th Starleague ended, there was a long break afterwards and many wondered if I was going to stop hosting the tournaments anymore, which made me very upset and disappointed.
I worked harder than anyone else to make Brood War more than just a memory to us.
If anyone had to shoulder the burden to get Brood War back on Cable TV, I felt that it had to be me.
"Should I work hard, make lots of money and try sponsoring a league?" That very crazy thought actually came to fruition.
This 10th Sonic Starleague, the Sbenu Starleague will be broadcast via OnGameNet.
After TVing OSL, we can finally watch Brood War again on TV via OnGameNet. Of course, SonicTV will be broadcasting it together.
Round of 32 will be on SonicTV and OGN via Online Streaming, and from the Round of 16 till the Grand Finals, it will be broadcast on TV via OnGameNet.
Not just the 10th Starleague, but for 11th and beyond, I will either continue to get sponsors or work hard and put in my own money to carry it on this hard-earned opportunity, so I hope people will just return the favor with love. We hope everyone who has come with us so far can once again and continue to support the Starleague, now that it is back on OnGameNet.
I started off this first step, but I think the real potential of this will come from the viewers' love and passion. If we work together, I believe Brood War can continue to flourish.
I am thinking of focusing more on getting new faces in the scene, as well as in the amateur scene.
I am very happy and content for doing what others have said I could not, and I will continue to live and work hard. As the pioneer game of ESPORTS, we need your help to keep Brood War growing and flourishing as well as something comparable to Baduk.
I will soon announce the prize pool and the players in the league. I am very happy to start off Brood War once again with OnGameNet. I am sincerely grateful to Kim Carrier and people at OnGameNet who have seen my sincerity and helped me.
I have been busy with work lately and was not able to watch much games, but I intend to return home and play some games. Thank you very much.

I just had an operation around my right testicle (thankfully it was nothing serious and I will be 100%) and this was my first operation in 20+ years so naturally I'm in pain... Actually probably the biggest pain in my life thus far. I think this is an amazing coincidence. These news gives me an ease off the morphine. I literally jumped out of my bed when I read it on my phone so I could type this message on my PC. I've wondered for 3 days now what good would come out of this. NO NEED TO WONDER NO MORE

Bring back a dead channel just so Bisu would have a chance to win it, because he sure as hell ain't winning a league broadcast by OGN.

if LoveTV Starleague brought us into the Broodwar 3.0 Era, this, if it works out like i think, will put us back into the 1.0 Era (; And that's a positive!

i didnt watch broodwar...can someone explain why they stopped broadcasting it? I dont understand why would kespa or tv network switch from one game to another if the viewership was good...what was the reason? It cant be just because new game came out. You can still keep the old one...or what?

That looks like it might confirm that, for the first time in 2 years, OGN will again broadcast BW, with sonic and players (for this translation, river = stream, rivers = streamers?) streaming alongside them. I can't believe I might very well have been wrong 2 years ago when I thought that was it, never again.. feels good, man.

Minor point but pretty sure ogn had like that reunion thing w/ yellow, nalra, and other old schoolers, and some other minor stuff
Great news! On it's own, I guess it doesn't really affect us much, but I hope it brings in more sponsorship interest and makes non ex-progamer amateurs want to practice more.
Now I just hope they found a competent observer who doesn't tap on the arrow keys constantly like some retarded ape. I couldn't watch the previous SSL's due to the headache I was getting from it.
Also that widescreen "high-resolution" hack they use actually detracts from the production quality, although it's barely tolerable compared to the ADD-ridden observer.

The observer during the SSL's was Sonic himself, I believe. Take it for it's worth, it's hard to commentate and observe in a clean fashion both at the same time.

As much as I would like to watch Flash play, why would he divide his time between BW and SC2 Proleague, when he could focus solely on SC2 and yield better results in Proleague instead of performing poorly in both BW and SC2 if he were to divide his time?

many oldschoolers came back to play tournaments. But nothing kept them here because in the foreign scene we don't have much lately. Just small tournaments with small prize money.

Hot damn. This Thanksgiving just turned officially badass!
Lots of things about this are really cool, but for now all I have to say is a massive thank you to Sonic. Had he not been there it's very unlikely we would have anything other than occasional afreeca broadcasts at the current time. Hats off to this awesome hero of BW!

Yep this so much! Is there any reasonable way to support this man? I think he should know that there are people outside of korea who are very happy about the things he does
Not surprised, I saw this coming a while back. BW's inherent viability as an eSport has never been in question, for those who correctly understand the situation.
Thanks to Sonic, OGN, and all involved parties, for facilitating the operation of the Korean BW scene.
I hope this means that OGN will allow Sonic to advertise his shoes.
The man deserves to have both his business and his passion for SC to be rewarded with success. He has quite literally put in all the time and energy he has, to the point of exhaustion and fainting...
Sonic if you read this we're all cheering for you please keep fighting and stay healthy

That was a touching post. I did not know Sonic has been doing this for 8 years, and that he has persevered through so much.
Seeing Konadora do a translation gives this a 'if you build it they will come' quality. In fact, this whole thing feels like "Field of Dreams" or something.

thanks @ konadora! It's sad to see that so many people seem to have doubt Sonic. Must haveIt's been really hard for him.
It's been mentioned a couple times before that the Korean fans have a tendency to focus on negative aspects. If so, they should be more supportive instead.

Not the least bit embarrassed to say this brought tears to my eyes

Like SC2/LoL most recently I think. LoL is big in Korea, while SC2 is like.. still not as big as broodwar
OGN hasn't done actual sc2 content for over a year now since they finished broadcasting Proleague last year. The most they've done with it since then are a handful of talk shows.
LoL is obviously their big centerpiece, with some minor promotional stuff on the side for stuff like Hearthstone last I checked.
Anyone know if you can see the RO32 live in the studio, and whether it's likely to happen before the 30th December? How far in advance are things usually announced?

it's probably gonna be without studio audience for Ro32. Not sure about the dates as he has yet to confirm it. He just said soon™

Don't be that guy. BW did make TL but even in the darkest times Nazgul and co, didn't turn their backs on the game unlike pretty much all other sites did. It's so easy, too. If a section gets less views, replace it with another one to generate more profit. Instead, BW is still getting a lot of front page exposure on one of the top visited Starcraft sites around. Also, Nazgul has often been there to encourage the community or staff members in their efforts and whether he or anyone else posts in here or not is hardly a relevant measure of.. anything, really.

Damn. At least I might get to watch some SPOTV SC2 I guess even if no BW. Unless someone has Jangbi's home address so I can go stalk him and force him to play BW for me.

sure thats true however dont forget TL even removed broodwar section from frontpage entirely people come and go its just typical how that is i just felt like pointing that one out im sure TL admins cant handle that stuff to bad

some people have left Broodwar for good and turned to other games. I don't fault then, what are you getting at? Unlike Gousgamers and many other sites, TL still has a big BW section, stuff is beeing done here and people try to get something up. That wouldn't happen if Nazgul said no. Despite that i saw him post a couple of times in BW threads recently, so it's not really a valid point you're making i feel.
I think the time for bitterness (if there ever was such a time) is over. We can be proud to be one of the oldest, loving and persisting communities of such an old game, but fabulous game, that still get's events like this one going.
An update from Sonic: They're currently figuring out the day/hour streaming schedule for SSL with OnGameNet. The players will not only be current afreeca BJs, but they are also approaching some retired programers. In other news, RorO recently started streaming BW on afreeca.

There we go, Bisu going out in the earliest round confirmed.
Also FUCK YEAH BW. Going to have to find a way to watch this!

so he'd be competition for sonic then?
I think I said this before but OSL is nice and all but Sonic really needs to buy Leta's family business and hire Leta as a stargirl. I just don't think Larva will do when it comes to televised Brood War.
edit: hmm maybe I'll take that back, he has his charms too.

Travesty imo
Bw is already dead to the foreign scene. What's keeping it alive are the 30+ year old koreans which is still a huge demographic in Korea.
Figured we could use some data, so here's from the current main TL BW channel with vods (afreeca only) titled in english and the channel not being advertised in Korea much, if at all, apart from a few games.
I have a dream that Sonic's league would go mainstream and BW would returned to its throne.
I have a dream that all the white and pigment kids across the globe would play in TLS and then the winner could get a seed into SSL.
I have a dream that sponsors from the corners of the world could see the potential of advertising their product to Korea by sponsoring that TLS winner w/ their logo.
I have a dream that because of everybody's re-ignited interest in BW, Blizzard would rehire their original SC artist to redraw the sprite image in high definition, fix the port-forwarding, and introduce the matchmaking system in BW.
Had to post here this is great news. I don't have a great analogy but this is like a girlfriend you broke up with on mutually friendly terms and keep looking back at and seeing how great she's doing and can't do anything but smile.

Surprised to see so many Koreans watching the streams. I wonder if they just locate the videos organically or through Korean forums
With so many Euros at TL, a bit surprised to see the relatively even split between the US and EU
I posted a Korean version of the recommended threads recently and I'm not aware of such a thing posted otherwise. Occasionally a cool game (like one of Bisu's first games or the game where goons get trapped on the ramp) gets linked and then you suddenly get 20k views which then mess up the stats.
This is for Korea / traffic sources / all time (but a bit incomplete):
Read recently the Korean entertainment companies are moving inland with their video postings (Naver/Daum) for improved monetization, hope the viewers don't abandon YT
VODs will probably depend on the contract with OGN, otherwise they'd be on Sonic's yt channel. Since Sayle will be doing rebroadcasts on work days, we should have VODs up asap on yt. They'll be in the Small Vod Thread, but the league didn't even start yet so give it some time ^^
I genuinely believed a BW revival was possible and now OGN believes it too. All that's missing is having certain "past" giants believe as well (Flash, Jaedong, Stork and Fantasy).
This is really all we're missing, guys. I'm confident this SSL will perform very well viewership-wise as BW always has and that'll be enough to catch sponsor's attention. If Flash and Jaedong could just return . . . I would lose my mind.

No what we are missing is new blood. For whatever reason no amateur guys seem to be able to step up to the level of SOSPA ex-pros. Without that the scene begins to crumble over the next 2-4 years as the current generation leaves of move onto other things.
it has been a topic of discussion for about as long as we've been watching sospa stuff, no really obvious solution. there are fewer amateur players playing in sospa tournaments now than ever before.

Yes, this is the pressing issue. BW survived until 2007 with no TBLS and it will need to be able to survive 2015 with no TBLS if it's going to continue in the long run. Besides, even if they all came back to play, that era is not going to return any more than we'll get 90s football again if Dan Marino, John Elway, and Brett Favre all unretire. They're all older and slower and several years out of practice.
I would be far more excited to see whoever the promising young blood is in SC2 right now announce that they were planning on competing in BW than I would to see the corpses of Jaedong and Flash play out a poor imitation of one of their legendary games from 5 years ago.
do you actually think an amateur whos training consists of practicing at home a few hours a day 5-6 times a week,
can compete with ex-pros who in the past have been training for years in a professional teamhouse 12 hours a day almost everyday with many other like-minded talented peers around them and also receive the guidance of coaches whenever necessary. the only reason why amateur can sometimes take games off them nowadays is that the expros' skills have somewhat deteriorated from lack of regimented practice.
until you can bring that professional training environment back for amateurs to join they can never reach the level of standard the expros have already attained from years of regimented training.

they can and do most of the afreeca ex pros were pretty hardcore A teamers and ofc amateurs will pale in comparison but most of the lower tier of A pros compete with top fish amateurs skillwise

Anyhow, some quick imaginings of what the SSL 10 logo could look like:

If the scene and tournaments keep growing like they have been, this starts to take care of itself. People will have a reason to train, and train harder, perhaps even make new clans for this purpose. All they need is viewers and fans.
