Hi, my name is Tedster and I've been following the BW scene pretty religiously for about 15 years now. I'm also a part-time streamer, mostly for M:TG, but what I'd really like to get into is streaming BW English commentary on the regs. There might not be a huge demand for it right now, but I'm extremely passionate and see this as a great opportunity to expand my BW knowledge and collection of useless factoids around the same time the scene is experiencing a revitalization.
Obviously it's going to take me some time to get in the groove, though I've already got a decent amount of practice commentating other games. I plan to start by recording a few videos before transitioning to livestreams.
Right now the limited number of BW tournaments are pretty heavily covered, so I figure I'll start with some older content, hopefully tournaments/sets that haven't been previously recorded with English commentary. I wanted to see if there was any interest at all in this, and if there were particular tournaments or games that people were interested to hear English commentary for.
Ideally I'll transition into this to commentating on some of the livestreamed games being put out on Afreeca by ex-pros. One step at a time, for now.
Thanks for any feedback, and I'll post any games I record in the coming weeks here for reference.

Could post some samples of your commentary? I suggest you focus on ongoing events, e.g korean leagues + some foreigner events. There are some tournaments happening very often, e.g. we're looking to run a 100$+ tour in just few weeks.

Can you cast in rhyme? Although it takes lots of time, it could be sublime.

actually, the ICCup staff is currently looking for Casters joining us covering our existing content, which is ICCup Nation league and Casts for our A/B Tournament series and we intend to expand once our staff sizel allows us to do so. Give it a thought, contact me if your interested, i'd fill you in specifics (;

Few things to avoid, which are a let down:
1) If you're from a different game but want to cater to the existing English BW-world: Skip any metaphors or comparisons. 2) Do not refer to BW as "StarCraft One". It really pisses me off to no extent, no idea why. 3) Don't read negativity into posts, except those come from Artanis[Xp], who is the most evil person on earth, he never means any good.
Other than that, personally, I would avoid to re-cast "old Korean" events, because
a) they were casted before, potentially by "better" (subject to opinion) casters before or b) they were not casted, because nobody thought they were good. Back then. Imagine how that would be now with higher standards of play.
If you cast today's Afreeca scene, you might have to live with odd time zones and/or other casters already doing that. However, you might get co-casters or co-cast yourself. So that'd be an idea. Not my personal favourite though. Same thing nearly every day and there's already tons of good content.
So, last option possible would be to focus on foreigners. There's still room - either to review ICCup tournaments, or go help out with other events (see Koget). Then there'd be defiler.ru's tournament platform for replays, or bwreplays.com. Pick something.
edit: reps.ru released some "pimpest plays" from post-2010. Those would be good choice as well - cringe worthy games, as well as really great ones.
What would be very, very cool, but also very, very time intensive, would be to set up a new BW install with old executables and cover foreign shit that has not been covered before. In the foreign world, we lacked the equipment, not the games. Things that come to mind would be stuff like Sandlot. I can imagine to even add your casts to those articles.
Just a few ideas, what you do is up to you. Anyway, good luck and most importantly: have fun. Good to see people try.

You've been around for 15 years and seem to have more of an interest in Korean events, I think your insight would be better spent on Korean games. This is especially so if you have things to say about how the game has developed/is developing. I don't know if someone typically covers the KCM matches, but there's one happening in ~12 hours where VODs can be expected for you to cast over. I also don't know if someone is going to cover the OGN games coming up in March. If either of those are too soon, I don't suppose you have a short list of matches over the years you wish you had the opportunity to speak over (even if they've already been covered)? It could be a good demonstration of your knowledge and passion while you get your groove.
Also, don't feel you have to limit yourself to commentary; the scene is short on dedicated analysis.

Hey! I too would like to hear a few of your sample casts from elsewhere, but preferably one of your first BW casts! You can check bwreplays.com and download a "hot" replay there just to start. Or, I can give you a replay that I use to put casters through the gauntlet of fire so to speak Your choice.
I'm casting an amateur league that is focused on improvement - Coach Pupil League. I'm looking to bring a wide variety of casters into this series to give some diversity and varying inputs on games. Casts are weekly, and if your knowledge is what you say it is, I think I wouldn't mind having you as a guest caster.

Can you link me that page? I remember seeing a lot of cool games in there.

Or cast in song-voice.

I request any leagues that has no english cast already.

Just start casting any enjoy it. If you read too much into it you will lose what makes each streamer unique, and in doing so you might end up forcing yourself to cast instead of doing it for fun.

This. I cannot believe Tastosis still do this every BW game they cast. They will go "this is like in SC2 when..." and I literally have no idea what they're talking about because I don't follow SC2.
You're casting fucking BW guys. Don't degrade BW fans' viewing experience by going off on weird tangents involving another game.

Cast only my games and be as biased to me as you possibly can.

I'm also of the same opinion but in Tastosis case, with the recent ASL, they were casting and streaming on GSL channel, which is primarily a SC2 channel. It is expected to have SC2 audience watching the stream as well so when casting BW, they have to fill the role of intermediators, explaining BW situation in similar SC2 situation to help the SC2-only viewers to appreciate the play more precisely.
But yeah, when you are casting BW to BW-only viewers, don't bring LoL or sth metaphor, it is quite a turn-off. Gl hf casting

LOL, well said.
I'd add, specifically/nitpick-ily:
1) Avoid the phrase 'a TON of damage' at all costs. Seems to be the #1 cliche phrase (over)used by many casters.
2) Don't constantly compare BW and SC2 during the cast. We already have some casters who do that, and it's annoying when done to excess. If I want to hear about SC2 constantly, I'll watch an SC2 cast.
3) For godsakes, Lair is pronounced such that it rhymes with 'air'. It's not 'layer'. And scourge is pronounced 'skerj'. Not 'skorge'. Amazing how many casters blow those. We seem to be living in a Hooked on Phonics civilization these days.
4) Some casters seem bored during early game, they make tons of jokes and comment a lot about the crowd and absolutely ignore everything that's going on in the game itself for the first five minutes or so. Don't do that. Early scouting is important, opening build orders are important, player mentality is important, what you think is going to happen next and what the options are is interesting to hear. Bored casters are boring to listen to. You can clown around some, but it's mostly about the match, yes?
Best of luck to you.

I would like to add: Do your research. Know the builds. Know the players and their recent history. Don't be that guy who simply announces what's happening on the screen.
Be a commentator, not simply an interpreter for the visually impaired.

My advice is that ignore all the advice on this thread, and just cast however you wish No need to take it too seriously, any english cast is appreciated!

"Give me advice" "No, ignore all advice"
Thanks for your valuable input, Piste.
