And then move on to http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Zerg_Strategy (I presume you intend to play Zerg).

[edit] by that I mean, allow yourself to fail while you learn a lot of things that seem like sc2 corollaries but are really their own beast that require focused practice to get anything like mastery. and there are a LOT of little things. as you get comfortable with one you'll notice five others that need work. and then integrating them into your play requires more than just slamming ladder games. that'd be like learning piano by stumbling through mary had a little lamb over and over.

Unit combositions? I'll give you a vague guide for each MU: ZvT: lings -> speedlings -> (mutalisks) + lings -> lurker + lings (+ leftover mutalisks) -> hive -> defiler + lings + lurker + scourge -> defiler + ultralisk + lings + scourge (give or take guardians). ZvP: lings -> speedlings and then either hydralisks with added lurkers and / or mutalisk for midgame compositions or lurker turtle with hive -> whatever the fuck you want of a hydra / ling / ultra / defiler / lurker combo you want. ZvZ lings -> speedlings -> muta + scourge TvP: -> marines -> tanks + vultures (give or take goliaths and science vessels). TvP -> marines -> marine + medics (give or take firebats) -> marine + medics + tanks + science vessel. From here you either go full mech for a more defensive aggressive approach (denying new expansions and outlasting) or medics + marines + dropships + science vessels (give or take vultures with mines) TvT: marines -> tank + goliaths (give or take vultures and dropships) -> battlecruisers PvZ: assuming you go forge FE: cannons + expo -> corsair (give or take zealot pressure) -> speedlot (give or take corsairs) -> speedlot + ht (give or take archons and corsairs) -> speedlot + ht + dragoon with range + observer (give or take archons or corsairs). from here you thin out dragoons and become more and more archon-zealot-ht heavy (give or take corsairs) PvT: Dragoons with range (give or take zealot pressure) -> dragoons + observer (give or take DT, reaver, shuttle with zealot) -> dragoons + arbiter + zealot (give or take shuttle with HT or zealot) or dragoons + zealot + carrier (give or take HTs). PvP: Dragoons with range (give or take zealot pressure) -> dragoons + shuttle + reaver -+ observer (give or take DT) -> dragoons + HT + zealot + archon (give or take DT). Soo I hope this helps, while writing this out I realized it might not be entirely accurate in all situations, fx I didnt cover mech tvz or 1 base pvz or cheeses (because I don't hate you yet)

BW has a lot of idiosyncrasies that are both annoying when you first start trying to overcome them, and also reveal a lot of the depth of the game that gives each unit its personality (a thing which over time all BW players internalize and eventually think of as natural). BW is also a highly developed and well-studied game. Even relatively simple strategies have complex variations that require you to know ahead of time how you want to respond to what an opponent does (or else you can lose your army / your base very quickly). In that light, I recommend you learn about a few cheeses people can do vs you, decide how you're going to react to them before the game starts, and then with that in mind play a strategy that will give you a strong midgame presence. Just something where you know how many bases you'll have, you know how many gateways / factories / hatcheries you'll have, and what units you'll get. Composition is important, but it's much more understated in BW than it is in high level SC2. It is only really critical for Terran in TvP to have exactly the right number of tanks at the right time and the right number of vultures / goliaths. That right number depends completely on what you scout. I guess the quickest way to get game knowledge is to watch a lot of replays of one player who favours a particular style on one map in one matchup. That will help you see what is common in all of their games, and what changes. Then rinse / repeat for the next matchup / map. It's much harder to get game knowledge just from reading guides or build orders, which tend to reveal very particular ideas rather than giving you a general sense of the action.

. Obviously the mechanics shouldn't be much of a problem Yea pony boy, good luck with that attitude. You'll be lucky to hit D+ (Look at Yume, GM terran, only a D+ player)
