I am quite shocked that there is no thread for this until now, but today I saw someone writing about a new Dragonball Z movie probably being released next year. It is going to be Anime and the original author Akira Toriyama is involved. I've spent soooo much time watching Dragonball Z on TV and reading the Manga (actually I own all 42 comics and I have read them at least 5 times), so this will be a nice trip to the past!
This used up so many afternoons in late elementary-middle school. I still vividly remember all the nonsensical plot, powering up, and damn it all, I loved it.
I used to love this show, but honestly I tried rewatching it, and it's so bad :S. There's no consistency and over time that ended up bothering me. Everything is just "oh we're no match" to "oh we're evenly matched" to "oh I'm so much ridiculously stronger than you, but my ego gets in the way" back to "oh I'm barely weaker than you/equal to you now and this is the final fight."
I've been looking for animes to watch again. I've gone through Cowboy Bebop and the two Ghost in the Shell series a couple of months ago, so I don't want to do it again... I have fond memories of Dragonball Z, but something tells me nostalgia influences my memory.

It's totally real. I've never been more excited about a movie. This is one of my favourite animes of all time.

Funny, that's what I loved the show for. It didn't pretend to be anything other than that and that's what made it awesome.

you watch this show for all the wrong reasons. The 30 minute screams in dump taking position are what make the show

Of course the show sucks looking back at it now, but who the hell didn't want to be a Super Saiyan when they were younger
On a more serious note: i haven't watched DBZ since elementary school and have not seen the new Kai series. It will be nice to see how the original creator adapts his work to the modern time.

Don't destroy my childhood!
Seriously, the whole Namek thing was so epic. Watching it the first time was just priceless. I remember sitting in front of the TV every evening with my brother.
This is definitely going to be the best movie in 2013!!
Also to the guy above "Kai" is just DBZ but done in the original JP format. So the series is shorter. There's no filler and its true to the manga. Also the music isn't the techno that was in the American release and is much closer to the original Japanese music that went with it.

this guy surely did.
can't find the full edited version. anyways, excited for movie.
There isn't that much inconsistency on the anime up until Cell saga. Sure the androids are kind of pure bullshit on their power levels considering Freeza was supposed to be the strongest on the universe before surpassing Goku, but it's still consistent.
The Buu saga is pure bullshit, but it's fun to watch esp. because of grown up Gohan.
Some have theorized Vegeta is going to go SSJ3 since it's coming out 3/30/13, but I don't know. I'm more excited for fucking Mystic Gohan. He became the single strongest fighter at the end of the Buu saga just to be absorbed in 5 minutes and then totally get pussified in GT.

Seriously, people underestimate how much the music he did added to the series, the vegeta power up music to this very day still gives me goose bumps. Everything he did in the cell saga music wise was nothing short of amazing.
Also people saying they wouldn't go back and watch it because it would ruin it for them, i rewatched it again when i was about 20ish and i don't regret it for a second, the only part that was kind of ruined in any aspect was the sayain/vegeta saga because it was just meh compared to the rest, the Cell Saga is where it hit perfection (In MY!!! opinion). Also when you rewatch it, the power up scenes don't go for nearly as long as you remember them going for.
DBZ Abridged is also freaking amazing, if you haven't seen it, do it, you will not regret it, its comedy gold.
I came here expecting another live action. Thank god that wasnt the case.
Well I've outgrown Dragon Ball years ago but might watch this for the nostalgy like I did the OVA that came a couple years ago. At least I think it was OVA, it had Vegeta's little brother.
I really don't know what more is there to be said in terms of the series and the story, but if Toriyama is involved, I'm sure he'll think of something wonderful. Very excited!
I've just lately sat down and rewatched entire DBZ. This is awesome. I'll see it. However, it will take some time since it probably won't hit the danish cinemas. Well, gotta wait for a rip, I guess
Oh man, after clicking the website link ;; Has all the charachters in the way i left them Gohan being older, Krillen with hair xD Picollo, Vegeta and Goku all the same. Argh, hurry up xD WTB more trailers.

Yes agreed. I actually re-watch the dragonball - dragonball z series like once a year (I am not a big fan of GT ).
But yeah I remember my first time re-watching the series after many years of not seeing it and the powerup scenes didn't seem as long as when I was a kid watching it. I also loved the cell saga to ^_^.
Agreed again with you on abridged, I follow that religiously as it's so fucking funny :D
I click on the thread and realize its an actual dbz anime movie and I'm like
"Oh well that's good, but I couldn't possible still enjoy something like this now that I'm so much older..."
I watch the trailer and I"m like
"Ok epic music, dumb space shit, nothing is happening... 5 seconds of Goku standing still with the wind blowing through his hair OMG GOOSEBUMPS I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!"
Slightly off topic, I know music is a matter of taste, but I'm not sure why so many people praise Faulconer's work on the series. To all of you american in this thread, I suggest you to watch either the japanese version of DBZ or some European dub with subtitles if you can't bear Son Goku's girly voice and you can get your hands on it (I believe most european dubs kept the original soundtrack, at least the French and German one did).
The American dub is really... cheesy. The voice acting is strange (especially the kids who sound like they have been smoking tons of cigarettes since they were born, well this one is not specific to DBZ but characteristic of most US dubs I've seen so far, but still...) and the soundtrack not very good. I was introduced to it few years ago and I just found it hilarious, but that just my opinion !
My first viewing of the entire Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z was with german dubs without any subs, I believe I was less than 12 when I started watching it. I didn't speak a word of german when I started and obviously had no idea what they were talking about, not that the dialog is that important when it comes to DB/Z.
I generally always prefer the original japanese voice track over dubs but hearing Gokus original voice for the first time was quite a shock, it couldn't have felt more out of character when I at least recall the german one being at least somewhat manly.
Never watched the american one more than couple episodes.
with that being said........ i really hope the storyline doesn't boil down to:
bad guy comes bad guy beats the crap out of everybody vegeta gets pwned like a jobber gohan gets pwned like a jobber gotenks gets pwned like a jobber goku POWERS UP AND WINS!!!!
cause i'd like someone else to be the hero. perhaps vegeta? but i'm 99% certain goku will emerge victorious

I'd like Vegeta to play a role like he did in the Buu saga, where he was pretty much the main charachter for most parts of that saga. Goku vs Vegeta was sickest fight in the whole series imo xD Then the utter sadness where he tried kill himself and buu was good TV!
Im all for anything to happen aslong as its a good storyline, like the Buu saga was an excellent "omg, maybe this is the end" actually came into it during that saga.
DBZ is my favorite manga, I started "reading" (I couldn't read yet lol) it when I was in kindergarten like 19-20 years ago and I still like it. I really didn't like the anime though after having watched it recently, it's really slow and boring.. The movies were quite good though (my favorite ones were Bardock, Trunk story and Cooler) so I hope this one is gonna kick ass. I'm sure it won't happen but I really want to see a Goku vs Vegeta fight !

I never understood why people liked DBZ.
Well, the original Dragonball was really good. Especially the first seasons when it went against the red ribbon army etc. There was a lot of humour and an actual story. Towards the final seasons it become this boring, repetetive "powering up" theme that only seemed to be about stretching the very thin story content. And with DBZ this was continued, only that it became even worse. Was kinda sad what had become of a series I really liked. Goku should have never grown up.
I'm just sad they completely butchered the series with GT.
"Hey, there's this awesome villain with enormous power, what do I do? I KNOW! LET'S CHARGE HIM WITHOUT EVEN TURNING FUCKING SUPER SAIYAN AND THEN COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW HE'S TO STRONG AND WE CAN'T BEAT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yeah Because of the movie's announcement I watched some DBZ movies on youtube. It was the first time I watched DBZ with American dub and it sounds sooo strange. I was like WTF? They sound like manly porn actors and what about that music?
Comparison:
American sounds so strange to me, but I guess for Americans the German dub will sound kind of girlish.
German sounds gay :D American is ok, but i wouldn't watch the whole series in English. Original Japanese is the way to go for.
Imagine watching American cartoons (cartoon network for example) in Japanese, they would sound really bad i guess. That's because American and Japanese cartoon styles are very different
I personally like the English voices, don't sound like any problem for me :S If you have watched any other sort of Anime with english on you will notice most of the charachters voices get re used alot, Shaman King has most of them in, even some Pokemon voices too.

hehe me too and only half of DBGT couldnt bring myself to finish it. I watched the funimation DBZ thou, I LOVE the music, especially vegetas theme.
DBGT eng dub has terrible music. I couldn't stand it.. Story aside it was an ear sore so I just watched the japanese version. Love that theme song.. 'DAN DAN kokoro hikareteku lalalalalla'
So let me get this straight , March 2013 , Company of heroes 2 , Starcraft 2 : Heart of the Swarm , and a fucking new dbz movie ? CAN 2013 BE ANY MORE EPIC ???????
^Thirded!* I normally really like Japanese voices (except for say female voice actors for Ikari Shinji, for example), but I love the dub voice actors for DBZ and am not very keen on DBZ's Japanese voice actors, with the exception of Ryūsei Nakao - (Frieza, also Kurotsuchi Mayuri in Bleach). + Show Spoiler +

Bullshit. Japanese soundtrack is variations of trumpets, while the American music fits a variety of situations. It has sad music, it has intense music, it has scary music.

How many anime have you taken a look at?
Anime can be cranked out at super fast rates like 1 episode a week (AKA horrible animation)
and 2D animation in itself is quite hard and time consuming
It sounds like maybe you haven't seen enough examples of good anime animation, or maybe you just prefer a certain style(s) from somewhere else? (please share with me!)
For example, here's a film animated fight sequence that I find to be REALLY awesome + Show Spoiler +
And here is a panel showing the history of japanese animation and shows many clips from different styles/animators + Show Spoiler +
Even if you don't like any styles, the amount of effort that must have been put into this sequence must have been enormous.
Surely there must be at least one style used in anime that you like (not the character designs but the actual movement), or were you just referring to overall anime?

Thanks for posting the Sword of the Stranger video. I'd never seen it before and it was amazing.
How was that awesome in any way of that word? It was so fake. In a real fight, one swipe of a sword and you'd be lucky to get one parry off. The likelihood in that sort of situation is that one guy would be greviously cut and die of the injuries, if not in the first instance.

why on earth does something have to be hyper realistic in order to be "awesome?" if we go by what you said, every superhero ever + video games involving magic + countless other things can't possibly be awesome because they aren't "real"

I can't believe this actually has to be explained to you.
You don't focus on the 'realism', you focus on the fluidity, clarity, and smoothness of the animation. I'd say that this scene could be transcribed into live-action and the shots would look exactly the same; which is to say, excellent.
Words cannot express my disappointment that this is not the case. Yamcha in DBE was a truly inspiring character
Haha, what the shit is this? 3.1 IMDB-Rating? Is that guy supposed to be Goku?
I gotta get my hands on that movie at once...
You haven't seen it...and your in this thread :O dude wtf? xD I watched this the day of release anticipating the amazing DBZ, being bought to real life, and the saga's all start. Going into this film in the back of my mind...no wait at the front i was thinking...man i can't wait until the Freiza Saga film comes out...watching Goku transform for the first time into a Super Sayian in real life..would be sick!
Alas my dreams were crushed as it was a shocking film that was just MEH, and spoiled everything DBZ is about.

Um, ever seen extreme martial arts or shao lin kung fu? Now please don't tell me that's impossible. A "real fight"... come on seriously? The animation brought the story to life, that's the point here. Doesn't matter if it's not like the average sword fight. These are people who fought in many wars and battles (remember, a lot of people die in this era...) so supposedly the ones who survive are already very "lucky" or rather very "skilled". You don't think this is possible at all...?
If you watch the rest of the film, there are many more "realistic" battles in which the fight is much shorter.

Really? You don't say? You mean those drawn characters were fake and not real??? My mind is completely and totally blown! -.-
Seriously is you're looking for realism in an animated fight there is probably something wrong with you! Half the point of animated fights are to do things real humans can't do...
Edit: More on topic I cannot fucking wait for this :D Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were my childhood! The movies have some serious shakiness to them but I really enjoyed them, you just have to view them as completely seperate to the show storyline kind of like a Trunks alternate future. so 2 masters at the tip top of their abilities would still kill each other in 1 slice? You are correct, in most Japanese Swordsmanship Styles the philosophy is 1 life 1 cut, but even the most skilled opponents wouldn't kill each other that quickly.

i guess that really depends, say simulate 1000 fights, how many ends in 1 moves, 2 moves, 3 moves and so on. i think it'll really jump around a lot because it'll be mostly based on mind games, poking here and there to draw mistakes and moves, not like a jedi fight. i'd assume 1 move will take up a lot of spots in 1000 fight simulation. a wild "educated" guess.

Yep. Pretty much because he was the BoxeR of that time, creating many different styles, that were so new that his adversaries couldn`t predict his moves.
I think they're only making this to troll people on the internet who have Superman vs Goku debates. Goku is going to be completely invincible by the end of this one.

it wasn't necessarily "styles" but rather his philosophy on how to engage a battle. I remember one time he was dueling a gentleman(I am blanking on his adversaries name but he was decently known in the area for winning duels with his muramasa) but it was one of the most famous, he slept on the beach and was very dirty and smelly when he showed up, late, with a hand carved boken out of a oar. The opponent was so furious at this he couldn't think straight and started fighting Miyamoto very widly, to which Miyamoto took advantage of and killed the man.
A fight between people of that level starts as soon as they recognize each other as hostile. Every action should be composed to unnerve your opponent and make him adapt to your fighting style as opposed to you adapting to his.

One of my thoughts lol... Im still betting goku has to use the dragon balls to become a God or immortal to stand against the supposed enemy...
But a march 30th release date for japan isnt to bad... Though if nothing is confirmed for english language or anything else its going to be a long wait, beyond this.
This movie is officially out in Japan now. Its also the first Japanese-made movie to ever have an IMAX release... give it up to Dragonball to make history!

pretty sure thats not true, the plot synopsis that I read says he only is in that form for very limited time, after he runs out of God mode, however, his base and super saiyan forms are apparently alot stronger and able to compete with Birusu which is why in the trailer you see Super Saiyan 1/2 Goku fighting evenly with him. I actually think the God form actually won't have that big of a part in the movie.
US & Canada will air Dragonball Z Battle of the Gods in English Dub across 250 cinema's in August 2014. Ticket information is not out yet, but there is a sign up form to be notified when ticketing information is released.

As mentioned a page or so back when i last bumped this thread
From Japanese television network FujiTV comes the first Dragon Ball Z 2015 Movie teaser video! With artist Hironobu Kageyama singing the famous Cha-La Head-Cha-La, the eternal Dragon, Shenron, along with our hero Goku powering up as a Super Saiyan are shown. No other details were released, but it certainly gets our juices flowing!
Finally got around to watching bits and pieces of the battle of gods movie as well as the previous one with vegeta's little brother, forgot how clowny this show can be lol
Oh thank god it's that... I saw this thread and my heart nearly stopped thinking it was going to be another Dragonball Evolution D: Was very, very scared!
I didn't like this movie that much. It was void of any plot or reason and had way too many stops. Was good nostalgic ride but that was the best it could be said about it.
The lack of fight or conclusive final fight was also pretty annoying. They were like "OK that was a nice gentlemanly training, see yaaa!"

Seconed. And I was more hoping to see all Saiyans fusing together instead of the "everybody gives their energy to Goku and he fights the final boss"-bullcrap.
