Cannot believe that there is no thread for this show tbh. Season three will soon be on netflix as you can see in the trailer above. There are already two amazing seasons out which you can and should watch right now tbh.
Black Mirror is a British television anthology series created by Charlie Brooker that features speculative fiction with dark and sometimes satirical themes that examine modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies
Every single episode is self-contained which means you can basically start with any episode you want to. A lot of people usually say that you shouldn't necessarily start with the first one because it's kinda different from the others, i tend to agree. But srsly, do yourself a favor and watch the first two seasons before season three comes out, it's only 7 episodes total anyway
I've been meaning to ask someone who likes it what he thinks the message of the show is. To me this looks like a cautionary tale about technology going too far or something to that extent. But it doesn't make any sense, cause all the problems that arise with technology in this show are caused by human flaws, so I don't see why the show expects me to blame technology for it.
I never thought it expected me to blame technology, it's more about how technology is becoming an increasingly powerful tool and how the fundamentally flawed users become bigger and bigger liabilities. The title is itself a metaphor for screens reflecting humanity's darker side. It's true that it is also cautionary, but in the sense that we need to start thinking about where technology trends are headed and the issues they will raise.
Quit after the second ep. worthless show. There are no hints of subtlety when it comes to its message. Once the dude + Show Spoiler +
literally starting fucking the pig
i clicked my home button. It's as if the Wachowski's got a hold of a Twilight Zone franchise.
I can only imagine what Season 3 is like. . . "Sir, you cant seriously be considering this" / cuts to infants forced to watch livesteam torture and rape "I am, and to finish this procedure I am going to ask you to resign." / cuts to children looking doe eyed with a gunfire going off in the background.
How is the entire show "worthless" when you can't even finish the first episode? Every episode is different, and if you're not getting any subtlety you're not paying attention. It's just a shame they started with that particular episode, as it can be off-putting, and people often miss the point the terrorist was trying to make. Anyway, you imagining what Season 3 will be, is about as valuable and on-point as me trying to imagine Baz Lurhmann's next musical.
Anyway, for those interested it's probably better to start with any of episodes 3, 4 and 7 (the xmas special). They're all standalone and there isn't really a bad one, but those are the best imo.
Questioning if they can keep it up for 12 episodes. The greatness is based on great ideas for each episode not a tv production line. Maybe they wont do all 12 as standalones?
Edit: Didnt see the trailer, so 6 new stories. Two episodes each.

Audience: "My god, what stakes."
Lol. You are one of those people that gets offended by everything?
Anyways, each episode is a different unconnected story and they don't have same theme except they are all cautionary tales how humans that don't keep up with rapidly advancing technology can get into serious problems (or how we should not rapidly advance technology beyond what we are capable of using and understanding).
I find it to be hit and miss, but with the genre skipping and the nature of the show I guess hit and miss was always going to be the case. Like someone above, I particularly liked the treadmill/reality show episode. Interestingly, Charlie Brooker is married to Konnie Huq, who was fired from the X-Factor before that episode was written *Bitter much* haha. The weird one about the 'jail alternative' and people watching on their phones was a highlight too. Looking forward to the new season!

And this is what I have a problem with. This logic doesn't make sense. With the wrong people, anything can cause serious problems. So why direct this criticism specifically at new technologies?

Because technophobia is a powerful idea, especially with tech advancing so rapidly nowadays. This allows a writer to easily tap into fears and create a nightmare vision of the future.

Because humans are not ready for some of these. We are not mature enough for them, just like we are not mature enough for nuclear technology.

I doubt the best experts want to be mature. They like to see the limit of that technology they created (the best so far) and if it is far above the expert can not stop the technology.
I saw this thread and watched the first 2 episode and i gotta say: not what i expected but i really like it. The scenarios seem just so possible. Looking forward to more episodes
I really don't think that the show wants to blaim technology. The show blaims society, technology is simply a catalyst for the stories and to make it more interesting. My favorite one is "white christmas" , i really like every single one though because they are all rather smart and have something to say. Pretty hyped for season three!
As I said it blames both. It blames how we invent and use technology we are not capable of understanding its ramification on us. Of course not all episodes are about that, but that is one common theme I felt connected them since their story and characters are not connected between episodes.

Well i disagree that it blames both. All of these "bad things happening" could happen without any technology at all. The techology is simply a catalyst here, it makes it easier. It blames what people do with technology, i guess we can agree on that.
