I'm completely fine with Kirito being OP only because he is who he is. If you want a reason for the MC being op watch quanzhi gaoshou or something. You don't watch or read it for that kind of stuff, you read it because you want the bad guys smashed, and if you enjoy the world/setting. The part about power fantasies being good or bad is also a completely useless notion, and is answered by the notion itself - Power Fantasy. You don't always need reasons for power when you fantasize about being OP while reading about power fantasies, if that's what tickles your fancy. People bashing on SAO so hard and feeling obliged to go in and say that the show is shit whenever someone mentions it, and at the same time not saying anything negative about shows like Overlord, which was mentioned a few pages back, a show where people could enjoy just the main char, who also doesn't really have any particular reason for being OP, other than being who he is(granted, it's a player not an NPC), presenting his opness to the enemy in a grandiose manner, without even doing any attacks or anything, makes no sense to me. Why can that show without even a story at all get a pass, yet something like SAO which is objectively better in every way, considered trash.

Because it's at best lazy writing and at worst shitty writing. Stories should preferably have explanations for why things happen, the author going "because i said so" should not be a satisfactory reason, and it certainly isn't for me. Why can that show without even a story at all get a pass, yet something like SAO which is objectively better in every way, considered trash. Because SAO and Overlord are fundamentally different shows? Again this is like comparing OPM to SAO, the shows try to achieve completely different things. Overlord never tries to create tension around Ainz's strength. In fact the show goes out of its way to establish the sheer difference in powerlevel between him and the world he finds himself in early to inform the viewer that this isn't going to be a source of tension or drama. + Show Spoiler + With a single exception where he fights Shalltear who is technically stronger than he is and wins due to being prepared and mindgaming his opponent, which is a satisfactory way for a character to win. Overlord also establishes why Ainz and the rest of Nazarick are strong, the powerlevel of Yggdrasil is entirely different from the new world he finds himself in+ Show Spoiler [LN spoiler] + Plus the laters parts cover the whole concept of the gods being players and how even concepts like leveling up and the spells of Yggdrasil was brought into the new world by players Not to mention having a lawful evil main character. Also i don't quite see how you can say that Overlord doesn't have a story? It very clearly has a story and infact has multiple self-contained arcs that tell their own stories ontop of the overarching story. And SAO is by no means objectively better in every way than Overlord.

Computer and VR things is literally his entire life so yes he is OP because he has the talent and he puts the work in. There are times later om where they stretched it too far but in the 1st arc his power level is exactly where ypu would expect someone like him to be. He isn't too op at all.

It is hard to imagine that SAO is better than that show, though, since that would take Overlord being a colossal piece of shit. Maybe it has better production values (since SAO at least did look good), but its hard to imagine its story/characters/setting/etc being better. On February 22 2018 07:32 Slaughter wrote: They established why Kirito ia strong. He is one of.those people who no lifed the game while in beta so he is super above everyone else. There are times later om where they stretched it too far but in the 1st arc his power level is exactly where ypu would expect someone like him to be. He isn't too op at all. Knowledge of the beta explains why hes power at SAO. It doesn't have anything to explain how he can be godlike in both ALO and GGO, both games of which don't use Sword Skills (which are basically pre-built combos). Kirito literally goes from being a power-house in SAO due to high level and stats and a good skillset, to that somehow translating to ACTUAL sword skills IRL. And is Kirito unique in his addition to computers and VR? Hell no, there are tons of others like that out there. Its bullshit. And going back to SAO, while the beta does explain why hes powerful, it doesn't explain why he is the MOST powerful. But honestly, his power in SAO is fine, because even though he was powerful, that story still allowed for conflict and tension, as he did actually have a struggle at more than a few parts. edit: I unintentionally capitolized the word 'beta', thank you for ruining me, Muvluv Alternative

His sword skills in game also never translated irl. He was trainrd in that sword martial art which helped him even more in game. Its been forever since I read ALO or GGO but all I remember about it is that his large amount of time in VR gave him something akin to muscle memory. GGO was where it got silly because he was deflecting bullets but ALO was basically the same engine as Aincraid so he was very familar with it lol.

They basically just bursted it down when the rest of the raid went to shit. Once again something that happens in real mmos.

It's just poor. If you gonna do that at least lewd it up a bit. Get the pantyshots in there to make it fun. At least GGO understood this and focused most of the budget on ass.

The 1st book was basically like a concept LN for a series. Not really good itself but good at showing ideas. It was a short story for a contest.

Once again something that happens in real mmos. I'm talking about the first story from the LN. I guess anime it would have been around episode 6 or so...? Asuna and Kirito party up and go fight a floor boss by themselves, Kirito takes out his two-sword skills, and beats the boss down. On February 22 2018 07:44 Slaughter wrote: Did I day ALO or GGO? I mean this whole conversation about Power Fantasy has been in relation to ALO. If you are just switching gears to a different arc for some reason, then I guess I misunderstood you. And yes, his sword skills in game did translate IRL. Suguha was like a regional or national champion in Kendo, and Kirito gets out of SAO and uses his "skills" from SAO to beat her in a duel. And this was when he was still recovering from his muscles having atrophied away. The LN described Sword Skills as "you put yourself in the right pose and start the motions, and then the game auto-moves your body to complete the Tech". So Kirito's skill with a Sword in SAO was almost completely automated, yet somehow he can get out of game and IRL beat his Kendo-champ sister, and then join ALO (which also has no pre-scripted attacks and requires actual sword skill) and takes a big stinking shit on its top player.

This is why Progressive ia better. They show more because there is room to actual develop things insyead od the haphazard 2 books and anime. Spoiler alert but Kirito isn't the best player in the 1st arc and he regularly goes against players who are on or abive his level. He wasn't even the star for a lot of the boss fights in Progressive.
