Anyone play or have played this series? Its sort of like Demon's Souls without lock-on
I was first introduced to monster hunter just last summer by my friend, he let me borrow his PSP for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I had a lot of fun playing it and raging when I would get hit when I clearly dodged that Rathalos' fireball. Unfortunately the analog started to mess up and crap out completely so I never got to continue playing.
There's a new game coming out for the Wii on April 20th. You can play with up to 3 friends(just like all the previous ones) for free using the Capcom servers and I was wondering if anyone was going to pick it up so we could play or something. The game also comes with a "free" nintendo classic pro controller.
Hell yeahhhhh lol. I cannot wait! 4 more days till epic monster hunting shall commence. I didn't know it came with a free controller? But who uses the classic controller, you gotta use a gamecube controller :D.
I'll tag team some monsters with you tho, I got a friend who might be picking it up as well, though he's um eh... currently... incapacitated... to say the very least.
If your TV is near your PC we could even get some Vent/TS going . Since we all know Co-Op games are always better when you actually chat. Pretty sure Wii never got any mic support of sorts... I don't follow all that.
finally... I was soooo pissed when I bought Freedom Unite
"In the world of monster hunter... You are never alone..."
OMG OMG I GET TO PLAY ONLINE!!
I was so excited!! Only to find that the catch phrase SHOULD have included the line
"Unless your roommate doesn't own the game"
FailFailFail
Now with online play, I'm completely pumped to get back into it Completely recommend it for anyone who wants a hella difficult game that you won't be beating in a day or two.
Someone please tell me that rolling under Tigrex when it's charging at u is impossible. And the youtubers who can do this are using hacks. I've tried using extra invulnerability and i'm still not able to perform this "feat". Managed to do a lucky roll in between the fore and hind legs once and that's it.
I haven't played this game for a long while, but this game would be better if it was slightly more fast-paced.
I'm ~HR150 on Monster Hunter Frontier (KR). Used to play MHFU, but MHF has a lot more content even if it is grindier. Some of the new monsters are cool, too. Although I miss Naruga.
Also to roll under Tigrex you aim right, because its left leg lifts really high.
Tri is supposed to have keyboard support also so we'll see how it goes. 4 more days! I wanna try out slash axe, one of the new weapons showing up in MHTri
Heres a guy who's decent with it, though it seems like a low HR quest.
I play MH, HR9 in MHFU, attempting to borrow a friend's Wii or something so I can play Tri.
LaiShin, you can't roll through his body, you have to roll under his left leg (your right) or superman dive if you don't have evade +1/2. Better yet, just don't be in his path when he starts charging if you can avoid it.

Do you have a guide or anything to get onto MHF?
is it like the same stuff, offline and online modes?
Monster hunter!!!! lotsa ppl i know are getting it, even my sister. getting it day one and gunna play all friggin week yeah! looking into the bowgun stuff seems cool cause u can change the parts now.
I've spent hundred of hours playing Monster Hunter (PS2), Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I love these games, though theres few people around here that even know about the game (lot more popular in Asia then Americas it would seem).

This is the wiki I used when I played. It has pretty much everything you need. The gameplay is based around online play (as it's an MMO) so it's all online. All of the monsters have 4.75x their HP from the PS2 games and deal tons more damage to compensate for the fact there will usually be 3-4 hunters on a hunt. There are some quests that are specifically solo (like Lunastra) and those are tuned for one person, but 99% of the hunts will be done with more than one person.
I don't have MHF installed on my new PC or I'd show you some screenshots. The game is really good if you like the core gameplay of MH, but it gets hella grindy above HR100.

So bull D:, can't use the gamecube controller with the game. I hate using this terrible wii classic controller. lol this entire town is in assless chaps.
I bit the bullet and bought the standalone game and payed the extra $10 for a classic controller pro. My local Gamestop were out of non-reserved bundle packs.
Can't wait to get online, still need to make a character. I might play online later under sixduck if anyone wants to play.
If there is more interest in this game I'll edit the OP to include people's character names.
I tested the waters out online, it was pretty fun even though I didn't have wiispeak or a keyboard. Had to use the digital keyboard, heres how it went.
You select a world server, they had like 5 servers.
Free, Expert, Rookie etc.
Then after you choose your world server you choose like a channel/lobby that holds up to 100 people. These are known as cities or city walls I believe. From there you can join arena rooms(i think) or regular rooms. I haven't tried to start a room yet, but I'm pretty sure you can password it and make private ones.
The online is pretty easy to get used to and the lag isn't that bad. People have progressed pretty far already though, but there still a ton of noobs.
What controller setup does everyone use. They're all SO BAD I'm having a really hard time deciding which is better...
Wiimote - Freely use the "opener" attack any time you want. I have not found the stun attack though. Recording enemies on the fly, ez pz. Easily move around map while navigating menu. Swimming sort of a hassle. Wiimote positioning effects commands... can effect commands in ways you don't want.
Classic - Requires you to sheath the weapon before you're able to use items or use you're opener attack. Recording enemies a bit of a hassle. Very easy to stun enemies... Pain in the ass to move and navigate menu. Swimming is easier. I find controller easier to simply attack with. Sort of odd selecting items, though you get use to it.
I don't even bother with Setup 2 for the classic controller that's just an abomination. Anywho, yeah I just pretty frustrated with the controller setups for this game.
The wii remote does just fine, you can play just fine without the gamecube controller. Although it took me forever to figure out how to go a sheathed GS-charge, once you figure out the commands, its pretty convenient. The only real problem I have is my character swinging whenever I try to scratch my face. Free onlinemode for americannnn version<3
I freakin hate gobul, so annoying in the water but on land he is cake. I really dislike the underwater combat lol. It's a refreshing/new concept but its so difficult with the camera to dodge monsters.
Though I just fought a rathian the other day, it was a walk in the park since I hunted so many in MHFU. They changed up her moveset a bit to make her more devastating. I really like hunting her, too bad her armor sucks
My favorite boss so far is Jhen, though he hits like the full force of a truck and moreso with just rock attacks. It's really interesting fighting with ballistas and cannon balls, also neat you can mine off his back or skin his tongue during the fight.
Least favorite fight is really Uragaan, I really hate how hard he can hit and the margin for error can be pretty small. Also bombs suck, the chin thing is pretty okay.
HR urgent quests are so lame for the final 4 star. A Rathalos AND a Rathian at the same time and they can pretty much two shot you.
I HATED Gobul so much! Just thinking about that fkin fight makes me want to rage at all the frustration that built up during that fight lol.
I think the most intense fight was the capturing Qurupeco, in that fight he was able to call Diablos. That was terrifying, the first time I saw Diablos drop from the sky and charge at me... .
But yeah... "HR urgent quests are so lame for the final 4 star. A Rathalos AND a Rathian at the same time and they can pretty much two shot you." This, agree.
What's everyone using for weapons?
I'm enjoying the SnS a lot. Switch Axe was pretty interesting though...
I'm considering buying a PSP just for MH Freedom 2. How many people would recommend this game? I've heard a lot about it, and also played it on a friends PSP. It seems like a fun game.
MHFU has a ton of content for one to play, be prepared to spend hundreds of hours on the game if you want to finish it.
It may sound like a huge investment of time, but it is totally worth it. Nothing like cutting up a large monster AND then carving it up for its skins/hides/soft parts for you to make weapons and armor out of.
Are online quests harder than offline? I am trying to do the Jump four Jaggi's. I eat them for breakfast offline, but I cant even kill one online. (currently, 3* offline, HR 2, using Hunter or Jaggi set)

Yep quests online are going to be harder since they are meant for 4 people
I solo'd the quest last night took a bit of time(20-30 mins), but it's doable. I used a hammer with full lvl 3 jaggi armor.Might be faster with a lance or slash axe if youre good with them.
Try clearing out the area of the small monsters since they all eventually run onto 4. After one is dead another one will spawn after that. Theres a Qurupeco on the map somewhere, so becareful of that aswell.
Definitely good for money though, 8k for just that quest.

I was lucky to do this with 3 other pubblies, but the reward was 1000z (didnt know there was a split) then we try to capture Luroth, after killing the mane and tail i got friggin d/c god i hate this online crap, wont even let me rejoin or tell me who i was playing with so i can tag back in.
sixduck please add me, hope we can do some 1* or 2*s together. hopefully we can get a TL arena team

Nargacuga armor set give you evade +2 AND evade inc (longer invincibility time when roll) so technically it is possible to roll under a charging Tigrex.
This game is incredibly fast-paced when you get to upper-level (HR6 and above) when the monsters become faster and stronger. You have no time for laziness.
anyone still play tri here? I've been playing it and It's not as deep as 3rd portable since no gunlance horn dualswords or bow. But the online is easy to get into so I'll give them that. I'ts also noob friendly with great tutorials.

I only play the freedom series, unless they release a real one for PS3. My friends and I all play ad-hoc, some of the best gaming experiences i've ever had doing that 4 player ad-hoc is so much funner to me than online play, so I prefer PSP versions over the wii.

I finally bought a classic controller and I've been playing a bit. I played a shit ton of the mhf games on psp so I'm not completely terrible. We should play one time.
Bumping as MH3U is coming out soon. Is anyone here getting it?
I'm pretty psyched to get it for my 3DS. It's going to be my first actual foray into the series. My friends did an incredible job convincing me to get it. I've tried out the demo and it seems to be the right mix of fun and challenging that I haven't felt from games in quite a while.

But still, PC version is better then Wii/3DS for me;) (hopefully it will be translated...)

I think it's likely a monthly subscription fee, just like the MHF on PC. Console market still is a bit behind in this aspect compared to PC platform.
My friend got a demo code off Reddit and we played it for a little while, I tried SnS and the Insect Glaive. X+A on the SnS was changed from a jump attack to a dash attack, which seems slightly more better for mobility, but I still hope there's a way to do the jump attack because it was helped a lot with breaking out of reach parts. There's also a new back + A charge attack which you can do mid-combo which both looks cool and seems pretty useful.
Insect Glaive is interesting. It kind of attacks like a twinblade from DS2, and the pole vault is seems like it will be super useful. The buffs you get from the insect don't last long at all, which is fine because the weapon would be ridiculous if it did. Very in-tune with the emphasis on vertical surfaces/combat in this game.
Also played with the Great Sword for a bit. The attacks seem slightly faster and a lot more combo-able; it also gained a new horizonal slash attack after the lvl 3 curved charge, which I think is equivalent to a lvl 2 charge attack but I'm not sure. It also can hit at the peak of its swing again.
Combat in general is more fluid and fast-paced, and (at least, in our experience) issues with the frame rate were only noticeable a couple of times, both of which were still perfectly playable. Plus, there's no underwater combat of course, so it's already better than 3U.
Nah, I just played solo, couldn't tell you about how the frame rate is online.
I might get the new 3DS for it, but it really hinges on how good that new analog nub is. I'd rather they still have the nub, but also make a Circle Pad Pro compatible with the new 3DS as well.
Just received my MH4U pre-order :D I would recommend either the Circle Pad Pro or the New 3DS to play though, it's more convenient. Still believe that playing on PSP was more comfortable :/
I played over 300 hours of mh3u on 3ds and I'm about 15 hours in Mh4u. I never used the CPP so it's definetly doable with no problems. In fact, I would say that the mh4u camera is 10 times better than mh3u.

the 3ds one is "newer" in that is has a lot of the newer content and a streamlined progression through the low-ranking stuff that's quite a bit better. The wiiU game has better graphics and... underwater battles that most people hate
To clarify, the "Wii U" one is not that new at all really. It's MH3U, the previous generation. The brand new 3DS game is MH4U. MH4U will likely not see a console release. Totally separate games.
That being said if it's you're first time playing the series you could pick up either! It's still a great game, only almost 2 years old so not that dated. I'm still playing through MH3U on the Wii U, not sure if and when I'll pick up 4U yet on the 3DS.
On February 26 2015 14:49 spritzz wrote: Actually runs pretty smooth on the New 3DS with decent graphics. Probably gonna be tough without the C stick on the old 3DS.
Having no issues on old 3ds XL. I've also had no issues with having no C-stick, but this is not my first MH game.
At least you know to where a full set. Until you learn or want to try and min maxing it's best just to wear full sets of an armor to activate the skills and either enhance the skills it has or deactivate the bad skills. I prefer full sets anyways since they look better than min maxed mixed sets.
Gaijinhunter's videos are great tutorials. It helped me too even though I've played 3U to learn all the new things weapons can do in 4U.
Any of you guys with the new 3DS have problems with the C-nub? Most of the time it works fine, but sometimes when I'm fighting monsters, my hands get a little sweaty and it becomes fairly unresponsive.
If there was a way to get a little more traction on it, it would probably alleviate the problem.

Haha I've been spoiled....
And the c-stick does require some force to use, so probably will have a sore thumb for the first couple of plays.
I feel like after playing the psp MHs a fair amount don get used to the nonsensical camera - most of the time you should know where you are in relation to the enemy just by the last action so you can start some attack animations by feel before rotating the camera
MH is not a MMO. I feel that there are many people playing it with a MMO mentality. Just ranking up, without getting propr mechanics and even enjoying the game. Just thinking about Rank and late game, while MH has just so much content trough every rank.
And then you occasionally go online and see people that are G rank and don't know what active skills are, and where obviously carried to G rank. Not only they cart a lot, but you notice that they didn't bother playing solo to have wystone.
MH is a solo game with co-op that you an use to do interesting stuff or to kill things easier/faster.

Yeah while I think people should play a game however they want I agree with your statement. I'm about 100 hours in and really taking my time to learn each monsters patterns, try out different weapons, and use different gear. It's been so fun the whole way through and when I started HR I didn't feel like a leech not knowing what they are doing. I've been playing solo up to 9* quests but online I'm at my HR4 Urgent. The higher I go the more the randoms start to suck. If any TL'ers around my rank wanna group up I'd love to.
On the topic of how do you play this on a 3ds?
Very easily, like any game press the buttons and move the stick.
Just got up to Kushala Daora in the caravan last night. Haven't played him online yet as I wanted to take him down solo first (even though I already got to HR7 a few nights ago)
Can't wait to get home and lay the beatdown on him.
Frenzied Brachydios, Frenzied Deviljho and Apex Seregios also didn't seem as hard as I thought they'd be or maybe I played more cautiously cause I was scared of them.
Oh god brachydios is back? I was considering getting this game but I hate that fucker way to much. Nah I'm kidding but really this game looks amazing and will buy as soon as I can find a job to fix everything of mine.
Bought MH3U for the Wii U about half a year ago. Havent gotten to play it much due to moving and stuff, but I'm looking forward to getting back into it. It's very enjoyable, although grindy.
That said, I can't imagine playing it on a screen smaller than a proper 40+ inch tv, so unless MH4 will be launched for the Wii U at some point, I'll have to pass.
Edit: I mean, I can understand using a handheld console for classic jRPGs and stuff like zelda, but for a game that's based on fighting huuuuuge monsters? It makes no sense having this on the 3ds.
It worked well enough on PSP, I had hundred of hours on MH Freedom, MH2 and MHFU. But somehow I don't like it as much on 3DS: I think it has to do with how uncomfortable the console feels after a long period holding it, and with the small aliased screen. I have MH3U on Wii U too, and now that's an amazing Monster Hunter experience :D I sincerely hope they rethink their decision of giving up on MH on Wii U :/
While I would love a port to a home console I still love playing on a handheld. I don't get to sit at home much and so playing while I'm at the studio ect is so clutch. I'm about 150 hours in and only halfway though HR hah. I also played a lot on PSP so I'm kind of used to it i guess.
The new moves are used with four different weapon styles. So all four can be using a long sword, but all have some unique moves. I can see the complaints about it being flashy, but the powerful moves are slow so you still need to be thoughtful when using them. In the trailer the staggers are from part breaks and flinches from damage, if you attack into a charging monster you might trade blows or just get knocked out of your move. If the new moves make the less played weapons more exciting that's great. The lances in MH4U are almost never played because of their mobility issues. Spicing up gunning is great a LBG can now do more than just dodge and unload their rapid fire shots they can occasionally do a charged shot.
Gaijinhunter did a good breakdown of the trailer here
Finally MHX confirmed for the west. It's being called Monster Hunter Generations and is coming sometime in the summer. Bonus content will be given if you have MH4U save data.
I'm that guy who's going to say "I wish these would come to a console and not 3DS, despite owning one". I played a shit ton of MH3U on the Wii U, even though it was a shoddy port (textures and stuff that is). Didn't care. But it's just the kind of game I love playing better on the comfy couch with a big screen. Have tried the demos for the 3DS ones and just can't manage, both controls and the overall feel playing on the tiny screen.
I've looked in to getting my 3DS capture carded or something so I could play on a TV/monitor but they're ridiculously expensive, like the same cost as the 3DS itself lol
