Went to likely the only draft I'll get to do for some number of months now. Only managed to scrounge up 6 people but hey, better than nothing.
P1P1 was Exquisite Archangel. I debated back and forth on this a little because if you're really far behind this thing isn't all that likely to save you anyway, but I took it, 'cause hey, mythic. I was a little wary to be in W going forward since I horribly lost two MTGO drafts so far going W with either R or B so I was looking to try to be in G. Things were looking good as I was passed Prey Upon and Greenwheel Liberator, but then, 2x Spire Patrols, Hinterland Drakes out the wazoo, Dawnfeather Eagle....UW fliers it was. Since it was only 6 people I wheeled basically anything I could ever want the entire draft, INCLUDING ANOTHER ANGEL, passed by the guy right next to me in WG. No idea what he was thinking but whateva.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/angelsdec-1/The only relevant sideboard cards were Negate and Metallic Rebuke.
Match 1 v UB artifactsThis guy picked up every U bomb in the world. Completely cleared my board one turn with Baral's expertise on 3/4 of my creatures, free-casting the -2/-2 scry 1 to kill a Spire Patrol. Replayed my hand with relative ease though and beat him down with fliers both games.
Highlights -
Topdeck wars---He pulls the 2/3 copy-an-artifact creature to use on my Treasure Keeper then realizes token gets exiled and not killed, so instead he Control Magics it (I forget the name of that rare. from Kaladesh. Oh yeah Confiscation Coup). Things are looking grim for me after his topdeck but then I grab Consulate Crackdown to wipe his board of anything useful (including my own creature) and wreck him.
Learning is Important - Drop a Copter early one game and right after I crew it for the first time he Fatal Pushes it. Next game I drew Copter and Consulate Skygate so I dropped them both, then Countless gears Renegade with a sideboarded Metallic Rebuke in hand. Crewed up the Copter, as predicted he had Fatal Push again which I countered for a single U mana (and improvise). Felt good.
Match 2 v RG aggroDude was splashing B for Scrapheap Scrounger. G1 was intense as hell, I was lower than him, sitting on a bunch of fliers while he sat on a bunch of huge creatures. I needed one more turn to swing in and kill him but I had to survive one attack. I swung in to prepare his life for the next turn but I kept back one creature too few because I forgot he had the 3/3 that can give other creatures haste with energy. I would have had to chump to survive but then when he attacked, he also had the 2/3 uncommon that lets you rummage and he picked up Welding Sparks, clearing away a blocker for the win. Should have just help back and tried to play a longer game.
G2 was mostly uneventful I forget how I won it.
G3 was down to me on super low life again but it was my turn to top-deck: the Exquisite Archangel! I was free to swing out and ignore my own low life for the win.
Match 3 v WG aggroSo this is that one guy who takes 100 years to play. He wasn't too bad tonight but he plays...suboptimally I guess you could put it? He doesn't play decks like you'd expect so sometimes you find yourself losing to silly things, like giving a servo Larger than Life on turn 3 just to smash in for 5 damage. He is also the guy who didn't snatch up the Wispweaver Angel so...I dunno. He's new-ish (though he's been playing over a year by now so does he still have the excuse? I dunno really.) In any case his deck was full of pump spells and low end creatures. Oh and Ridgeback Tusker, which may as well be a mythic. Oh and an actual Mythic, Ajani.
So his deck was actually seemingly really well constructed despite some subpar choices. Load up the board with low-midrange creatures then drop a Tusker, or stall and win with Ajani. Oh and to add to the annoyance, he also played Authority of the Consuls to stall even further.
G1 I was able to smash in a bunch real early with fliers but then he started playing his own so I couldn't profitably swing in anymore. Then he surprised me with Ajani. I tried o kill him in one go with my larger boardstate but it wasn't enough and then I flooded out drawing 5 Islands(!!!) in a row while he just sat back plussing and minussing Ajani.
G2 He kept a 1-lander with Authority so....free win I guess? G3 he aggro'd me way down to 6 as I gained him life just by playing creatures. Totals were 28-6 at one point. I dropped a Revoke Privileges on his Tusker only for him to drop Felidar Guardian and completely blow me out, removing my removal and re-buffing his whole board. Thankfully he opted to trade a bunch while I kept drawing creatures. I slowly slowly clawed my way back through card advantage, drawing cards with Merchant's Dockhand, and then ultimately playing enough lands to do silly things like return Wispweaver to my hand each time he tried to tap it down with that artifact tapper and blinking Cloudblazer with it. At one point he made me nearly shit my pants by saying 'Man, where's my Fumigate?!' but he was kidding.
Eventually I overwhelmed him to my first (and only) 3-0 of the format!
All-stars: Nearly every card in this deck. Honestly I don't think any card was underwhelming at any point in time. Aside from Skywhlaer's shot which I simply never drew in any of my games, ever.
