I have quite recently stumbled upon this amazing looking game. It isn't even out yet, but it is insanely popular, and you can probably tell why from the trailer.
From what i can tell by watching the videos currently out there are elements from many different games and genres implemented such as Minecraft(building and destroying blocks), Metroid/Mario style platforming and fighting, rare treasure to find akin to a roguelike, and much more. People have been calling it a "2-D ripoff of minecraft", but that is to compare apples and oranges: even Notch the creator of minecraft has stated this.
Just wanted to share this up and coming gem with the community and hopefully in the near future everyone can enjoy it!
If you want more info on the game, the main developer website(as well as FAQs) are here:
Been following this for a couple weeks. It looks like awesome fun with a friend or two. Can't wait for it to be released.
As for a general analysis of the game - the Minecraft comparison is pretty central, as the game shares the resource collection, easy item crafting and sandbox building factors. That being said though, this game is far more action-focused than Minecraft, which I feel will bring a lot to the game. With combat taking a cental part of gameplay, the gaming pace increases a lot, which will probably make this a far more intense game experience than that of Minecraft.
Blood Moon siege nights and boss fights also seems fun, although it seems this game doesn't really have many ways of dealing with enemies aside from the obvious hack and slash-method. It could learn from titles such as Dwarf Fortress in its trap system and siege attack / boss spawns to add some variety to combat.
Still though, I'm looking forward to this game a lot.
This game is brilliant. I'm getting a copy as soon as I can.
The only thing I'd like to see would be Dwarf Fortress-esque mechanics, but considering that the game isn't as in depth as DF, and the worlds don't seem to be aimed at lasting as long as a DF fort can (before you encounter more !!Fun!!) I don't know if that would fit into the game style anyway. Still, I can't wait for this game.

Hah...not really, I just thought it was such a cool game that i'd spread it around. The developers did put their heart into it after all.
I think the game looks cool from the let's plays that are out there but honestly I don't see how anyone could say the game is like Minecraft. To me that would be like saying Portal is like Call of Duty because they both have guns of some kind and are first person. Terreria is more of an RPG game then a sandbox game.
Also the game got featured on BlueXephos which is why your seeing posts about it all over the place. BlueXephos is the minecraft equivalency of Husky and HD.

Really? I have heard that there are viruses claiming to be the game, but I still haven't seen proof of it being leaked. If it was leaked I would expect to see youtube videos of people having it.
The game looks great and i'm probably going to buy it as soon as i can.
EDIT: I take that back. I'm pretty sure it's been leaked now.
Excited its coming out a lot sooner than expected. It should also be noted that Blue, the "community manager" is a huge starcraft fan. Bonus points for that!
Wow, a lot sooner than expected, annoying for me since I have exams for another week still after its release so i'm just going to have to resist the urge to jump on. Good price point too.
Where are you guys seeing it on Steam? It isn't showing up for me. But I am extremely excited about this game as well. Should be pretty fun. Been following a LP on it and it looks pretty interesting.
On May 13 2011 07:07 Gifted wrote: Announced 1.5 hours ago. Release date was changed from "end of June" to "this monday"
I think Steam is what pushed this decision. They did the whole beta release on Impulse, which Impulse (stardock games platform) doesn't mind, but I don't think steam allows for games to be sold "incomplete". However since they did the move, tons of people asked if it was gonna be a Steam release.
They must have felt they had a sufficient good product to sell even if they will keep working on it. So they just changed the label to full release so steam would allow it.
I gave in and got the alpha. I'm pretty impressed so far. Already better than minecraft to me. I'm still gonna get it tomorrow, but I couldn't help myself :>
Did some "alpha testing" as well, and wow. The game's amazing single player, and absolutely ridiculously hillarious in multiplayer.
Really looking forward to the legit release later today. Hopefully it won't be too late in the day!
Edit: Not sure I like the character sprites in the new trailer compared to the old one, though. Will have to see how endearing they are once I get my hands on the proper game.

I love how in this trailer they showed more about the building and hopefully will spark more people to try. I'm a little skeptical of this game because I love what minecraft those, I love the style and content this game pulls off, but I would love to live in a world, where you could have both.
What I think is impressive with this game is that they can make sooooooooooo much more good and cool content in a fraction of the time. (They made the game in about 6months) so I won't have to wait a year+ for cool stuff to come on like how I sometimes do with minecraft with the often amnemic patches. However it's 2d. So you rarely get a sense of scale to any construction.
It looks a lot prettier than minecraft so it has that going for it. Don't get me wrong, I love minecraft but if this game can get a stable, working, GOOD multiplayer than it has every advantage.

Yup, pretty much my thoughts as well. Has a lot of potential for a fun multiplayer game.

It's supposed to come sometime today. The estimations from the fanbase I've seen says 3pm EST due to some steam updating scheduling thing. Of course, being a fanbased estimation, you can instead just imagine a random number in your head and that'd probably be close to as accurate.
Best bet would be to keep an eye on terraria's twitter and facebook. I'm sure they'll announce there when it's ready for sale.
Also, to clarify as some seem to be under the impression the game will be released on the dot, tomorrow, there is no set time in the day we plan to have the game available, except that it will be BEFORE Tuesday (Eastern Standard Time). So the countdowns you see made by fans are not accurate.

- posted by some admin on their forums.
The guy who posted that was Blue, one of the devs. I'm super excited myself. There's a post on the fan forums where he details some issues but they look like they have a plan to go about things so Hail Terraria! :D
Just bought it myself. Quite fun so far, just as expected, it's minecraft in 2D. It seems to be a lot more "gamey" though with a much stronger feeling of progression.
any ratings out of ten? reviews of any kind from fellow TL'ers who played minecraft does it compare with minecraft including the awesome minecraft mods (eg. more creatures and the like)?
So far game is very enjoyable. Metroid was one of my favorite games ever and this combines my love of classic 2d platform with some action and the openworld exploring i love with minecraft.
Has anyone been able to get a merchant to move in with them? I have way over 50 or 100 silver or whatever it was supposed to be. Also should have requirements met for a Nurse to move in, but I just don't know how ><
Do you find them in the wilderness or do they just arrive in your house?
btw, if you expand the living space and add tables chairs light source etc more npcs will move in
me and my bud were digging down hours and then when we got bored and started expanding our newb log cabin to a giant stone fort all these npcs showed up one after another
I looked at the wiki there is SO much shit that we need to do.. everyon needs to deck out with some decent ore and armor first lol then we need to start killing shit in the dangerous regions
So what you guys think so far? i saw interview of devs long time ago and they look and sound very young. i think a cople of guys fresh out of highschool made this game and now making the big money, hopefully they dont just drop the project too early.
I'm debating wether I should get this or not, I've heard some negative things about the steam version. Some people even say the pirated version is less buggy.

They arrive in your house, assuming you build one properly. That means, door + table + chair + torch. As well as walls. Actual wooden walls on all sides, that's the top bottom, 2 sides as well as the "background"

Eventually you'll want to look around for floating islands because of ROCKET BOOTS. Floating islands are about 480ft above ground on a depth meter on medium sized worlds. On the ground level below an island there will be some sort of disturbance in the earth, like water in odd places covering trees o rvisible dirt walls where there was no mining.
I've never been that interested in minecraft, but the trailer for this game is selling me (giant bosses, rpg elements, craft shurikens and laser guns...)
Ahh, I'm sorry I've been on and off on that server. I'll hopefully be able to get more dedicated to it soon enough. Need more time in the day to do things. :S
bought it, bit confused as to what to do in comparison to minecraft. how do you use that workbench? rofl, the lack of tutorial and the uselessness of that guide are abit frustrating, il figure it out eventually, but its abit daunting and kind of odd for new players.
I played this game in multiplayer for 20 hours now. I can say with confidence that it is everything that minecraft should be. If you like hard games with a lot of content you should buy this. While i'm at it i'll suggest you another slightly similiar game: Clonk Rage. Look it up, it's a bit older than minecraft but it is pretty complicated and hard to master.
The little lake house. The dryad seems to like this place.
As for the arena.. well, back when I "alpha tested" this game, I really felt various boss fights could take too much advantage of solid ground, so with the arena, I set out to change those odds into my own favor. Here's the result - suspended on two gray rock pillars, some 200 feet above town.
Each part of the arena has a bed which allows teams in PVP to have a respawn point, or players in general to spawn closer to the boss. There's two entrypoints into the arena - central to low, and a high entry point.
So what fun stuff have you other people done today?
I love seeing pictures, its cool to look at things other people make and that I myself would never think to do. I never would have thought to make platforms in the sky to fight bosses lol, but it does make sense.
wow I was speechless after playing this. To hell with minecraft this has a ton more to it than Lego on your computer. Its more like DF than minecraft just soo much to do.
The star hit it right after it transformed. If you look near the torch on the left side of the screen you'll see the part of the eye that gets knocked off when he transforms is just starting to fade away

I dont think they are out of high school. Redigit the main dev behind the game was one of the guys behind Super Mario Brothers X before nintendo asked them to stop. Though I think he did say that he taught himself how to code.
So lucky, just digging around in a big cave system under my house and found two chests filled with awesome stuff such as magic mirror (imba) and enough gold to get a gold pickaxe.
So when does bigger monsters begin to show up? So far I only see different type of slims and the first humnoid monsters, and ocassionally blood moon night.

Start digging deep and collecting lens. Or you can gather a bunch of sunflowers and start looking for corruption. You'll probably need a team of people unless you are overequipped.
I collected 10 fallen stars, how do you use mana? Am I suppose to learn spells from someone or do certain items need mana?

Wow... Tell me you transfered something from alpha client or something and that you didn't just build all that over 24hrs. (Or that you somehow cheated to have faster access to mats)
I've been working on tunneling and mapping my place. I'm just a weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit OCD so I end up lighting up everywhere and making sure I can go both ways without the need of a grappling hook. Def worth the $10. Would love if they somehow grew enough to have a multiplayer lobby system.
They are trying to input a better multiplayer system through steam through the next few weeks. Something I read on the steam forums. I'm excited at the direction of this game for sure.
It sacrifices a bit of the creativity in minecraft to give it more direction. :S
This game is pretty sweet. I have a few complaints, but overall its awesome. Mostly: HAMMER Y U SO SLOW.
I'm super impressed at how well the MP runs over Hamachi once you have it all setup. Not even a whisper of lag from my end (granted I was the host, but hey it's good to be the king).

The difference between Small and Large worlds is pretty staggering. Took me like 10 minutes of digging to hit Silver on a single-player Small map, and dug for a good 40-45 minutes on a large world (just going down-down-down-down before long) and never found the damn stuff.

I had the help of another at building it, so it's not a solo effort. It did take a pretty ridiculous ammount of stone though, I can tell you that much.

Sounds like obsidian, you need a better pick(gold? i think) to mine it. The demon pick is probably the first thing you should make with demonite ore. It will let you mine almost everything, and it does quite a bit of damage, so you can almost ignore enemies while mining.

It feels like a full release. There aren't any big gameplay bugs, but I have run into a pretty big issue, though - anytime you modify anything in the options and click Back, the game will crash. Fortunately there isn't a whole lot of stuff worth changing in the options.

Regardless of what its called this game has so much more content than minecraft. Notch isn't lazy at all.

They all have a limit, I assume (given that a computer can only store a finite amount in memory...).
I haven't really ventured sideways much, but the biggest difference between them I've noticed so far is it took about 10 minutes of digging to hit silver on a Small map, and close to an hour of digging on a large map and I still haven't seen any of the stuff. Small seems to have a much quicker rate of progression.

My friend made a small map and said he was pretty close to stuff on both the right and left side. Not necessarily the edges of the map, but stuff like corruption and an ocean.
I'm sure once this is all more organized, TL could probably fixate a dedicated server/community/group/thing and get going. The patches are so tiny, so when they do content updates, perhaps it will remain tiny, and be just as satisfying. Iiiii like it.

I can't connect says you are running a different version?
I think you need to restart the server as there may have been updates
also dont forget to open ports 31337
edit: i've found a bunch of rare items now, cloud in bottle, multiple mirrors, hookshot, hermes boots, wand of regrowth (a really amazing sword that makes grass lol) water bolt spellbook (no mana QQ)
Mostly just ran around raiding chests and stuff and jumping into corruption - chests in corruption usually have a lot of good stuff including lots of gold/silver bars
Just got this game earlier today, It's pretty fun so far, gonna give the multiplayer a go tomorrow probably seems like it could be super fun with more people
One question I had so far was what the hell was this
Matt, that is a demon altar, and it is used to summon bosses, and used to be used to create some types of armor. It's kinda like a crafting table.
Would just like to warn anyone making a server here, there's a group of 2 guys going around griefing all the servers posted here. Loading up characters filled with dynamine and just chucking them down till all of the spawn is cleaned out, all the way to hell. Really need a moderated TL server for this game that would ban like minecraft does. Anyways, loading up a backup of the world I made and will no longer be hosting a server for a day or two, I'm going to rebuild the destroyed area, and make a backup schedule. I will give out the server info at that time.
Just had some greifers come into server names were R and L I think.
Server now has a PW on it. PM me if you are interested but you can only play using a char identifiable as your TL name so can report in forum if you grief.
Was just wondering, is it easy to set up a server? And when you get the game, can you play not-connected to the net? And can you play multiplayer through LAN? If I pick up this game it will be purely for multiplayer (prob with my brothers), so just wondering.

Exactly. It's actually an 8.8 right now, which is pretty damn good.
Does anyone have a server up? I was on Irninjas server, but it got griefed pretty bad, someone named OSAMA_BIN_LADEN and lisp something joined and TNT'd their way down to hell at the spawn :/
I bridged it but it got torn down again and also all of my lanterns and gold bricks were stolen from my house.
If someone has a server up and its preferably running 24/7 I'd love to join, PM me password!

Haha, that's rich. Lame, but I didn't think of that one to grief. I've been mucking about creating a Castle of sorts, I love how you can reset your own spawn point with a Bed. Crappy house/shelter at spawn point might get a dynamite stick or two when I'm done.
I'd run one, but I think I'll hold on doing that till there's at least "some" griefing protection, or at least good log server/tools.
Does anyone have a spare pair of rocketboots (or boomarang)? I have a starfury, horseshoes and balloons I could trade for one. I can't seem to find a pair.
This game is amazing. I haven't been able to do much yet because I've been ill lately, but I've been playing it for the majority of the morning and it's definitely one of the funnest games I've played. It's got a few small faults, but what game doesn't? Anybody who is perusing this thread trying to decide whether or not they should purchase Terraria should know it gets two thumbs up from me.

If you've already made a house and know how to not die then the tutorial is...
explore places collect stuff make stuff with the stuff you collected experiment with the stuff you can make to make more stuff
That's kinda the whole fun of the game, discovering new stuff (either areas or stuff you can make). Unlike minecraft there's no puzzle in making new items, you just need the right materials, so just play around and see what you can do and if you can't do anything interesting then keep trying.
I think the only 'advanced' thing that's not intuitive is that to attract people to your home you need to build a room (4 sides of walls with 1-2 doors and the background wall all filled in) out of either wood, bricks, or stone with a table and chair for each person you want to attract. The guide takes the first room you make.
I'm not sure I like having the guide in my house. He opens the doors and doesn't close them, and it constantly letting zombies and slime into my house. Wish I could kick him out.
On May 19 2011 02:55 Brambled wrote: Wish I knew how to kick or ip ban people. Server coming back online so just add me in steam name is Brambled and I will message you ip and pw.
I'm pretty sure Blue's most recent interview said that adding a kick and ban function on multiplayer was one of the highest priorities right now, and would hopefully arrive during the week. Untill that's implemented though, your best bet is to keep servers private. Personally, I'm frequenting a friend's server over hamachi.
FYI, the file size for a Small world is ~23MB, while the size of a Large world is ~94MB. So, you can presume that its around twice as large in each direction.
I want to get this for me and my gf, so would anyone be willing to split a 4 pack with me? Buying it separately is $9.99 while getting a four pack is just $29.99. Everyone involved gets to save money :D (you can just PM me)
Really like the game so far, but I'm sticking to single player for the moment. Still have a fairly basic set of equipment - full copper armor, iron sword/golden bow. Have a few rare items, but nothing outstanding: flippers, balloon (okay that is pretty awesome), and some +1 defense items.
I'm exploring an absolutely massive underground area right now. When it comes to water, I always try to drain it downwards, so I acquire a large body of water over time and just tunneled into another underground portion. It finally filled up after about 3-4 minutes of draining via 4 blocks across.
Just started playing, but it seems really good so far. I don't have shit so far, but I found a cloud in a bottle down underground. Double jumping sure is useful. Made my first iron pickaxe too, now I gotta try to make a real set of equips.
I'm having a lot of fun with it. I played for hours without realizing how long I had played. I haven't found any tough enemies so far, besides a slime with 150hp called pinky (although it wasn't hard, just longer than usual).
I have the item to summon the eye but I'm having trouble finding enough material to make decent armors first. I'm not having much luck in cave systems, so much that I just decided to make my own and dig a ton in random spots. I got most of my iron and silver that way, but in the real caves I barely find anything.
I found some place when I went to the right for like 10 minutes non-stop that had different music and looked pretty cool. Didn't attempt to go in yet though
Just found a magical boomerang, my first rare item in a cave!! woot.
Also, anyone else come across 'Old Man' who then turns into super bad ass skeletor and kills you in like 2 seconds? Because I just did. LOL glad to see there are different bosses, up until now ive only seen Cuthulu and the Devourer of worlds or w/e
If anyone wants to play for a few hours add me on steam and message me. My server will be up until about 11pm central, which is when its scbw time. My steam page is http://steamcommunity.com/id/muse5187/

Go down, down, down, down! Gold is really rare and only found in small pieces of three or four untill you start hitting lava, which on a big map can be quite far down. Once you get down that far though, it'll often show up in clusters of 15-20 chunks, along with ungodly ammount of silver.
I'm making a silver skybridge covering my entire map currently, which I've gathered while getting enough for a basic gold suit for my new guy, Urist McAwesome.

Aha, thanks. I've found lava but it was too dangerous for me to explore so I went back up. I only need 3 more bars for the pickaxe. A meteorite landed on my first night, which was such a tease.

This is what happened when my friend and I decided to search for floating islands and nighttime came:
I've been playing tonnes! Maxed on health and mana, found the underground jungle AND the floating islands, did the dungeon, but that was pretty easy. Working on flooding hell now .
This game improved so much from minecraft. I guess some people prefer building stuff, but actual decent enemy AI/Variety + 'quests' makes it much more fun.
this game simply has so much to do. certain things do get easy but it takes alot to get to that point(unless you take all the shortcuts) and thats what makes it feel like i accomplished something.

We just finished flooding hell... its an ocean down there lol. Also found out that you can't blow up hellstone with tnt, that was a little bit of a let down.
Was continuing my "flood downward" strategy to great success, when I finally hit lava areas. Easily wracked up about a stack of obsidian and started to hit bigger pools of lava. My inventory was full at this point, but I finally found a chest after quite some time without one. Next to the chest is a small pool of lava, open the chest see a magic boomerang and know that I'm going to have to rearrange my inventory a bit. A skeleton drops down on me, knocks me into the lava, and kills me. Saw at least 1 gold piece drop into the lava.
I could probably find my way down there again with some hassle, but it still sucks. D:
I bought this game yesterday as well, went to work on building a castle. I found a large patch of gold in the first cave as well? Maybe 1200 ft underground? I dont even have any silver yet!?!?!
I was teased by this thread, so i bought the game. And what a blast my friend. This game is awesome, but in less than 15 hours of play i already slain the eye and the worm boss. I got a ton of stuff.
And I feel that the game is lots of fun but I wonder if it's not too easy to max out. I hope they'll had a lot of new stuff. So we don't just "own" the game after 30+ hours.
Do you think the game is gonna get dry fast ? or is it just me ?
I agree with you there. I was taking my time with the game and having fun, then I tried the Devourer boss after killing 3 of the demon orbs. He dropped a ton of goodies and now I have a ton of awesome weapons, and 2/3 pieces of the demon armor set.

Meh I'm still enjoying the game :p
30+ hours for $10 should be considered a gift from G-dawg in the clouds. I know I've shelled like 20+ hours, and I just built all the molten weapons/armor. I haven't even touched anything above ground, and I know there is still a lot for me to do. I also do hope they add more, but for what the game is at the moment, I'm glad I bought it.

I don't regret either , but I see a huge potential in this game and I hope they're gonna expoit it to the max.

Agreed.
Guess I was just saying, that even if there wasn't any more content, it'd still be a memorable game that I'm glad I bought.
They are definitely planning on releasing periodic updates adding more content in. I'm not sure how much content, or how quickly, but Blue made it really clear that they are definitely planning on adding more.
It's pretty damn long too, over 20 30+ minute episodes. (side note, how the fuck did this guy happen? He's a call of duty guy that started doing youtube crap when EVERYBODY did for their Call of Duty commentaries and shit.....and then he turns into a total minecraft junkie....and then he's just a total nerd geekin out on Terraria xD. Strange little tale)
In one though, Blue (one of the two main dudes that makes the game) came into his world and spent an hour on skype with this dude talking. Blue reveals that he is a HUGE starcraft BW fan in there, and that as long as the community is there, in 2 or 3 years they will still be adding shit.
Makes me so fucking happy.
So far has anybody found the underground jungle yet? I have yet to see anything from there.
So I've been toying with ideas of hosting a server every once in awhile with a goal in mind.
I think it would be fun to do a pure rush with 4 or more people trying to go from fresh start to beating underground jungle and sky island in as little as time possible.
Having people joining servers where someone is already full decked out can really spoil a lot of fun by making the game too easy for you.
Would anyone be interested in this and willing to spend a couple hours in 1 sitting trying to conquer as much as possible?

I support this idea fully.
The best thing about this game is that you can play it however you want to. So much stuff to just DO.
I heard Blue mention something about a CTF version of multiplayer, with setting that already put you on opposite sides and on teams. Plus something along the lines of a mod being able to jump into your server as a sort of "miniboss", or a really really fucking hard boss, PvP style. And he'll drop something crazy good or unique.
The shit that this game makes possible.....my god.
Anyone else have an issue with multiplayer and crashing? At first it seemed that my game crashed every time i failed to connect to a server, but now it seems that i crash even when i manage to connect.

Ya i saw this guy on youtube too. He has a ton of videos on this already. Theres also a series from Blue and Red some of the creators.
Thats the like 16 episode of there alpha testing. Its a pretty good series if you wanna see some designers talk about the game and haven't bought it yet.
Basically if you make a small map just look for big holes in the non corrupted ground and youll find one eventually, you dont really need to dig to get to em

He closed it due to lack of players. He said tomorrow he would bring it up again.
If anyone has a server thats up 24/7 and stuff pm me please. I use the same name as TL so you can harass me on here if i grief (I don't .
Also on topic of the game.. Its so awesome. Only thing that bugs me is not having enough minerals. I am playing on medium right now and i think i might change to small until i kinda know what i'm doing.
Got the merchant to show up though :D makes me happy. Wish i could find a hook to make a hookshot.
heh i think the easiest way to progress for most is to first just go into random dungeons and holes looking for chests (digging is good too but slower) - also getting hearts
Then when you got some decent stuff (usually a good pickaxe, and a hook, and a demolitionist) you get some dynamite and start blowing up holes in corruption to kill the shadow orbs for more stuff and to get meteors to fall
Then you kill the eater of worlds somehow (respawn a lot and have a good melee weapon maybe) and then load up on shadow stuff and demonite
after that even if you didnt kill, you get some useful stuff from orbs, so hopefully you get a weapon from there if not you can mine the meteor that falls (i suggest using bombs to make it fast) and upgrade that way ( a good weapon might help like a phaseblade is a good target)
After that you either raid hell or jungles for more stuff ^.^
Yeah, the Eater of Worlds is surprisingly easy because he doesn't despawn when you die. D:
My spawn point had a fairly tall building right near it, so I was able to kill him fairly uninterrupted by other mobs, and then if I died I could just jump right back on top of it. I got a bit lucky on my first kill, which made subsequent kills all the easier. I had a ton of dynamite and was blowing up the orbs for items. I don't remember if I got the Vilethorn from one of those orbs or the boss, but I remember tossing a stick of dynamite, blowing up a good portion of him (and an orb), picking up the Vilethorn, and then dying. It made killing the rest of him so easy.
On that note, I've killed maybe 8-10 orbs so far and haven't seen a single meteor area.
Man the fire imps in the underworld are annoying as hell (hehehehe), I just dug straight downwards in my full gold gear got down there to try and get some hellstone because I have 1300 obsidian, but its the imps just wreck me.
Other than making hellstone bars and the skull does obsidian have any uses, cause I think I have to much if it doesnt haha.
Also brambled, or anyone else if you guys start up a fresh server message me on steam (same name as TL MattTBK). I think it would be a blast to start over on a fresh server like that.
Yea I really need to get a few of you this weekend or tomorrow when everyone has some free time. I started up a fresh server and had 5 people who were interested in seeing what we could rush to accomplish and like 10min we were down to only like 2 other people and stuff slowed down too much and server kinda lost its purpose.
Hopefully will get a few of you this time who are reliable and can put 2-3 hours into sometime.
is the progression rate really as bad as people make it seem?
I'm on the fence, but if end game isn't so good and the progression really goes from suck<suck<suck<destroy, I think it would ruin it for me. Is it like that?

There's definitely a point where you go from moving very slowly, getting one upgrade at a time, to suddenly getting a lot of cool stuff, but if you go from stone layer -> corruption -> jungle/hell -> dungeon you should be facing reasonably matched enemies, at least in in my experience.
Though, that's just the RPG side of things, you have to remember there's a whole sandbox aspect to play around in.
the problem is its pretty possible to rush to stuff. and if u don't know what your doing it makes it a lot of fun at first. I really didn't look at the wiki till i got tired of exploring after about 20+hours.
i really suggest playing on a small world. large woulds are incredibly huge.
I've been playing the absolute crap out of this game since I bought it on release (steam has me at 18 hours though I've been playing the past while off-steam so I can have my resolution increased).
I found that the progression definitely scaled with gear/armor. When I had weaker gear, fire imps/hornets/etc were an absolute pain in the ass, but with end-game gear and such I absolutely wreck them. There wasn't a moment until the very end where I felt I had the ability to wreck everything and anything.
The only gripe I have with the game is that the end game is obtainable in a sense. Once you've got the accessories, and killed through the dungeon, and have the best gear, there's not much to do. You can't really just spend time building a city or what not since building isn't really a huge emphasis in this game. That being said, I expect future content updates to help solve this and provide more content.
SO there is a way to make airlocks to never die from drowning if forced to mine underwater, or you want to channel water from the surface to Hell. Simply (while digging straight down) dig into the wall to the left or right and then dig up into the solid ground. make sure you only dig three high to go into the wall, and then dig up after youve made it into the wall a ways.
yeah proper dedicated server support will help with the longebity of the game. Plus future updates. I think they are planning on implementing a capture the flag sort of pvp in the near future, so that would rock.
I found a Breathing Reed. Its kinda useless maybe its because i can't use it. You can breath in shallow pools of water but you have to have the Reed selected. So its dark >.> don't really like it.
Still having trouble finding any good ore. I found some gold but not much. When i get down to that level i find tons of skeletons and mother slimes that rape me lol. Need more ironz
Yeah I quickly learned that when I kept hitting underground lakes while digging straight under my spawn. It was quite useful though, cause I ended up getting this huge body of water all in one place so when i finally got down to the lava obsidian was super easy to get which is how I now have around 1300 pieces ;D
The easiest way i found was to channel water underneath a large body of lava than dig out 1 tile from under the lava so the obsidian keeps forming at the same spot and you literally just hold your left mouse button in and you gets tons of it, except sometimes the water doesn't fill out fast enough and the obsidian moves down a tile.

yeah skeletons and slimes are bad at first but you should search for the treasure chests and hope for some good weapon. I found some magical boomerang and own with it.
Also I got a question. Is there anything worth to explore on the surface going to the right/left or it is just forests/deserts/other terrain and nothing really useful?

Dungeon is either far to the left or right. And Underground jungle is also far left/right, always opposite of the maps dungeon (underground as well, obviously)
Hey guys! I run a server off a spare PC I have around the house. It is currently running a world I started with a few RL friends. Currently dungeon has been cleared out and we are looking to start a new world soon. We always play on large worlds. It is up 23/7 and if you are interested PM me.

Yeah, I pretty much flooded hell doing the same kind of stuff. I was bored and I was like "hey ! let's find a huge underground lake and channel it to hell !" Now I'm fighting fire imps underwater. It actually made the mining of hellstone and everything in there way easier. Just need to go breathe from time to time and it's all good. Don't need to worry about dying in lava anymore.
I don't know if anyone else does this, but I use the Blocks of Dirt that I accumulate while digging to make steps and ledges for me to easily climb up and down an area. No wood necessary.
I don't think I'd call it a ripoff of minecraft, being old enough to remember games like diggers, worms, turrican, etc. The character models seem like they were copied from Final Fantasy but I guess you can't judge an indie game too harshly.
Destructible environments, multiplayer, 2D platform style? It's like the games of my childhood all grown up and slammed into a blender. Could be worth checking out.

It's not really fair to call it a 2D minecraft or anything. It's a lot more RPG-like than Minecraft. There's a ton more games before Minecraft that did the "dig up the earth and make stuff."
Kind of similar to how everyone calls new MMO's "WoW clones" when there was a lot of MMOs before WoW that you could say WoW pulled elements from.
either way, it's too different than MC to call it a ripoff.

My underground jungle is pretty close to the middle of the map, ~2200 ft down. It took ages to find it with bad advice such as this and "dig 700 ft down and go laterally".
To answer the original question: There are corrupted areas with chasms that hold shadow orbs with some good loot. They will also trigger meteors to crash onto the surface, and those are also useful. And then there are floating islands, which are not technically on the surface, but they're not underground either.
They are different games. Minecraft is a game in the sense that a pilotsim is. Both are fucken awesome, but not much of a "game" behind it. The fun of Minecraft is the exploration, the thrill of discovery, and freedom of imagination. However the actual "gameplay" of minecraft is pretty boring, ie the crafting the actual act of mining and the combat.
Terraria has less freedom of expression as far as changing the environment goes, which is a given as it's a 2d game compared to 3d. But it makes up for this by actually having a "game" component. And it's freaken awesome. You can make some amazing buildings in terraria yes, but honestly they will almost always pale in comparison to the stuff you can make in minecraft. At the same time i can play Terraria for hours upon hours upon hours because it has fun gameplay, in addition to the addiction of collecting shit. You still have the same sense of exploration and the thrill of discovery, it's just the freedom of creation thats limited in exchange for the gameplay.

What other things make it different from Minecraft? Is there some actual progression that you go through? In Minecraft the progression is pretty much about getting diamond equipment, and from what I've seen, in this game the progression is pretty much about getting better weapons and beating bigger monsters. What else is there?
I have started a teamliquid terraria server, I received a lot of PM's asking for my server info. We moved the server over to a new hamachi network so we can have more room for TL players. The new network is:
Name:TLTerraria PW:teamliquid
IP is 5.161.233.4 We started a new world an hour ago, we have not cleared anything yet, still setting up base. All TLers are welcome to join! Only 10 people max in a hamachi network, so join quick.
Bought a few days ago - and it turned out to be awesome. Cant find that much gold tho - still feels like I already digged me into the core of earth :> I just love the things with water - my house has a pool...took some time to fill like 50 buckets to get this pool up

That's essentially what it is...which is completely different than Minecraft.
Minecraft : Gather materials, Build stuff. You've got a lot more room for creativity in this game, as that is its focus. It is a sandbox game 100% through and through.
Terraria : Gather Materials, Build stuff. Very few materials compared to minecraft, however the whole world is one giant dungeon, basically. Deeper you go = better stuff to dig up, harder mobs, boss mobs. Terraria is an ADVENTURE game, not so much a sandbox game.
Anyone wanna sell me hellstone ores? I'm finding it extremely boring to go down there to farm this shit and come up with like 50-70 ore due to SNAKES ALL OVER THE PLACE. At least on multi, havent played single at all...
Anyone got any neat ideas for PvP? I was thinking that you could run a capture the flag variant, where everyone gets no coins, and you make a treasure chest on each side of the arena. Both chests and every player gets one gold coin. When all the coins are brought to one chest, or there is a time limit, the team with most or all the coins wins. It's interesting because the chest acts like a "goal" but you can have one player block the chest... unless you kill them And coins are the only thing you drop upon death.
Also, start a new server, have both teams join and wait in an alcove at the very center. Teams have 1 hour to farm items, weapons and armor they would find useful. First team to get up a bed gets 1 point. A player dying gives the other team a point. You get 2 points for making the enemy bed your spawnpoint, and the game ends at that point.
Obviously there are some problems with both formats, but if anyone has any ideas post them. The pvp in this game seems like it is going to be really solid with some tweaking, I haven't really gotten any items I'd call ridiculous.

From my experience, it pretty much is 2D Minecraft with (slightly) better combat. Overall, the similarities with Minecraft are a lot more obvious than the differences. It really is very, VERY similar, I feel like the differences people noted are mostly overstated too (like the whole adventuring thing).
I don't think there's anything here that you can't get with Minecraft + some of the better mods, so right now I'd say it's not worth the price.

I run a personal server on hamachi and we had 8 people with it running pretty fairly. And since terraria makes you manually type IPs to connect, it makes hamachi that much easier to use with it.

I'm considering buying this game, and from what I've seen and heard so far, it really just looks like 2D minecraft with better combat.

It took me 3-4 hours exploring a single cave system.
AS for PvP ideas, the guys making the game are already ahead of you. they have a CTF idea in the works for a server option, which would automatically set people to teams and opposite sides of the map.
They are also going to be updating the game on a biweekly to monthly rate until people simply stop playing.
One of the two creators is a major lover of starcraft BW, and notes that stores STILL CARRY starcraft BW simply because its still in demand, after soooooooooo many years, due to the depth of the game. They want to create something similar with their game.

Though I disagree with him saying the game isn't worth it at the moment, MineCraft does in fact have a grappling hook if you factor in mods. Which was his point, that you can get just about anything in Terraria with MineCraft mods.
I love the game myself, but I still think "2D MineCraft" explains the game rather well. The core of the game is essentially the same, and they both have their strengths. Terraria has far better combat with a nice variety of weapons/spells/enemies/boss, and MineCraft is more craft/building oriented. I've screwed around with mods that have added bosses, guns, jetpacks (pretty sure on this one, but not positive), grappling hooks, and so on. I'd still probably play Terraria over it for combat, though.
Anyhow, I don't think there's any point discussing it either way. There are similarities, and some will think that it's just a 2D clone while others wouldn't place them in the same genre. Let those who think that the game isn't worth it think that, while everyone else is enjoying the game for what it is.
On a more related note, I found a Mapviewer, and while it defeats the purpose of exploration on new maps, it's still really cool to look at for a map you've explored pretty thoroughly. I've uploaded a map of my small world for those interested. Not really anything interesting, but still kinda cool to look at.

Why do you build a house in minecraft? Can you answer that question? Why not simply start digging and then put a few stones in the opening? Just as safe, no waste of minerals. There's no reason, you only build stuff in minecraft because you can, there's no incentive to do so.
In Terraria, by building a town, you get NPCs to join you, which gives you benefits. You get vendors, a nurse etc.
I don't think it's fair at all to include minecraft mods, that would be like saying "why buy any FPS, it can be done in halflife with some obscure mod". As a standalone game, Terraria just blows minecraft out of the water, gameplay wise. The only "progression" in minecraft is to get diamonds, but they don't give you anything except slighty better weapons (which doesn't matter since there's no incentive to fight monsters in minecraft) and slightly better tools you can be creative a bit faster. In terraria, you can find crystals to extend your life, fight in the night to find stars to extend your mana, learn spells, get various weapons, fight bosses to get even better items, which you can then show off online.
In the end, both has progression where you want to get "some better stuff", but the progression in Terraria is miles deeper and far more interesting.

Ya.. I have no clue why it does. One reason i don't play sc2 much anymore.. lags like crazy on low on this comp. I have a desktop and i'm gonna transfer the worlds/characters to that and try playing there. It can run games on "Ultra." So it will be ok there just don't get to use it as much.
Only thing about that is i have to copy the new worlds/character files back to this if i want to play here with updated stuff lol. Wish the files were saved via steam or something : /
And on a Terraria note. I want to find some mushrooms underground :O

The way I see it Terraria trades depth of the building portion for combat, exploration, and loot depth. In Minecraft the building is way more engaging for some reason (mostly because it's 3d).

Funny thing about the map is that i have just BARELY reached the middle portion on a medium map. I thought i was close to hell and i'm not even 1/4 of the way there probably. Haha.
This is the map viewer. I have put in many hours into this game, and I still have not found all of the items I need to make higher end stuff. I say $10 is a steal for this title.
On May 21 2011 21:43 Senx wrote: So its minecraft in 2D ? ..
Think more like, Diablo'esque finding of rare items, Minecraft'ish mining and building and Zelda side-scrolling combat.
There's a large variety of weapons and different armor sets you can make or find. There are huge bosses that drop cool shit, random chests you find with cool shit in it, you can be invaded by Goblins where you just have to fight them off for a while and "red moon" phases where you're invaded by zombies and such.
To call it Minecraft in 2D is a huge insult to the depth of the game. Don't get me wrong, I like Minecraft and I played more than my share of it but it doesn't have anywhere near the replay value of Terraria.
All in all, for ten dollars this game will pay for itself over and over and over, very much worth it in my opinion.
Would be kind of cool if the game did have a Diablo type loot system, with random suffix and prefix items that come from chests. I'm just at the point now where I've gotten pretty much the best items I can get, and there's really no point in exploring more unless I wanted to get materials to build stuff, which isn't my forte as much as exploring is.

Wow, yeah this would be a really good idea!
I don't think this has been said but Terraria was the 4th most played game today peaking at ~30,000 players, only beaten by CS 1.6, CSS and CoD6.
I just need to find some people to multi-player with...
Got bored after 11 hours, it was worth the money but it gets pretty ... boring after you finish the "mission". I guess it's fun to keep making new characters to play with friends and building stuff but it's just not the same for me :/
I got owned so hard yesterday. I'm filled with gold stuff (except silver armor and pick...which sucks because I didn't realize you need a gold pick to mine meteors) and I decided it was time to summon the eye. I click him then I get 2 messages, one being "You feel an evil presence watching you..."
I figured, hey this is normal, I summoned him. I do like 300-400 damage to him and suddenly a second eye of cthulhu spawns. I got them both to around 1200 HP before I died T_T. Well, it was almost dawn so I wouldn't have had the chance to kill them but that was such a dick move by the game.
Then, I decide I should blow up a shadow orb and mine a meteor but I don't have a gold pick yet so now I need to make another.
Finally, my cave reached hellstone... I went down several times to mine some but I always end up in the lava sooner or later and only have like 10 ore so far... Didn't manage to find a hellstone furnace yet either. At least I know how to make a ton of obsidian because of the wiki so that shouldn't be too hard to farm.
So, should I skip like 3 tiers and tough it out until hellstone armors and weapons or should I just go for the meteors first then work my way up?
Pretty worth going to a floating island i thought. Found some good silver and gold deposits on them plus a starfury. Kinda useless weapon though w/o mana xD
KK I am thinking about trying to do a fresh start server today. Who is interested? Looking for at least 4 people who can drop at least an hour into this world.
Must be a new character with no gear and we will be rushing to accomplish certain tasks and I wil mark our time for each accomplishment such as killing eye of cthulu/eater of worlds/skele.
Will be really fun and will need good teamwork to pull off good times I think.
Just post a msg here and soon as I see enough people interested I will make a world and post the info.

Yeah there's some sort of problem. I try to connect to the IP but it stays on the "Connecting" screen for about a minute then gives me an error. :/
Alright give me 1min to work out kinks. Sorry about this hamachi has made hosting a living hell.
**Ok this is becoming frustrating lol. Refreshed my network and removed hamachi but still not letting my host world on regular IP. I was able to do it jsut fine before I installed Hamachi. Really sorry but I will update when I can get server working.
Ahah, I just went from gold armor + phase blade to complete molten set.
I made a giant 3-block wide well from my house all the way to the underworld, going through tons of lakes and lava to get there (had to funnel water to get rid of lava). Once I had a complete well, I funneled a ton of water in the underworld and flooded the entire floor below me, making it easy to walk around and get a hellforge.
That gave me a ton of obsidian as well. To get hellstone, it was pretty easy. Kill enemies until you get 2 fire imps (they won't spawn more) and you can destroy their projectiles with a gold pick while mining (you can mine behind you so you can always face them). Don't kill them and no giant worms will spawn, making it much easier.
I feel like I just skipped half the game .
P.S : Tried to go in the dungeon, like 20 skeletron heads started attacking me lol... I did some damage to them but I figured that means get out so I left. I read up and apparently you need to kill him before going in... ah well, I'll start with the eye (yes, molten set but I haven't killed a boss yet).
I could try hosting a server via Hamachi if Brambled doesn't figure out which hoops he has to jump through to get the game to realize he has a regular internet connection. I've not tried yet though so I can't promise it'd work :p (also might have some lag spikes because I'm on wireless).
Definitely won't try to host a non-Hamachi server though because I already have it installed and I don't want to mess around with my network connections settings just for this game though.

If you don't have the depth meter you can start planting them as soon as the back wall has rocks in the dirt. The seeds need to be planted on mud and there can't be any light near them aside from their own glow. Heres my mushroom farm for reference:

My internet died again, may somehow be related to hosting? I dunno; I'll probably get unlazy and actually go buy an ethernet cable for my computer tomorrow anyway which will at least eliminate any possibility of it being wireless-related.

using a ranged weapon, like molten fury, flamarang, etc makes it much easier. bring a full stack or two of healing potions to be sure.
If anyone has a cobalt helm or a flamelash, I pretty much have anything to trade for them, including up to about 50 gold. Also I have another cobalt breastplate if that piques interest.
It seems to periodically kill my internet, so after a few hours expect to be kicked off (it's a pretty big period of time though). I plan to go buy an ethernet cable today but I don't know if the problem is related to my wireless, to the game, or to something else. Regardless it's still pretty playable because you get a while.

Great news everyone! My hosting ability seems to be stable right now so I will be opening the server up for everyone and will try to keep it up 24/7.
Please follow these guidelines for the server!
All characters must be new on the server and you will be limited to only using those characters on the server. This would mean you can rejoin game later on but you must always be using character you started with to give game world a better lifespan.
All your characters will need a TL tag in their name so I know you are apart of community.
I will be resetting world after awhile once everything has been completed and at end maybe try having a small pvp tourney and will be naming the winner champ of our first world and will maybe do other fun things on server with suggestions from everyone.
I have no idea how to perma ban anyone from server so I will need everyone's names to be in this format. "TL Brambled" having the TL tag and your forum name where it can be recognized. If anyone spots greifing from a player please take pic of it to post as possible evidence on thread so we will know who and what they were doing.
Please join and have fun but follow these guidelines and we will have some fun. Wil be trying to think of ideas for little small recognition for the people who accomplish things first like the first group who kills eye/worm/skele or first player who finds a sky island. All these things will but up to everyone and just give suggestions/feedback and we can all come to decisions on what we want our world to be like.

Seems like one of the more fun one.
On a different note, I've been thinking about things that they could add in form of different zones. I've heard Blue (one of the two main devs) say something about some kind of snow area is coming soon, but just think in a year or so, when you generate a large world and there are mountains and deserts and oceans and islands and even more crazy shit underground like some kind of bug hive.
For everyone who's been playing on my server: The world seems to be having some problems (I keep crashing it as I try to drain some lakes) so I think we should abandon it and move on. I'm starting up a new medium-sized world that I'll be hosting instead.
I was thinking about buying this game, but im having mixed feelings... Does it feel like minecraft, where there are basically no limits as to what you can do, or is it more like a bad RPG where you max out your gear and get bored? Im looking for a game where I could spend anything from an hour to weeks of playtime and not run out of stuff to do.
EDIT: To clarify, on TL all i hear is basically good things, but one of my friends who tried the beta and plays minecraft says that you run outta stuff to do fast.

It's true that you run out of stuff to do pretty fast. I had good fun for 3-4 days but now it's starting to feel pretty boring.
I have the max weapons and armor, visited the floating isles, the underground jungle, the dungeon and the underworld, beat the 3 bosses...
Nothing else to do except build a ton of stuff or get more items really; or try to get every item in the game.
Playing multiplayer should help though, it's one of those games that's more fun with other people.
I've been playing the game for a total of 40 hours with a group of 8 friends on and off since it's release, and I'm just now starting to read more into PvP. I believe I have all the gear I want, aside from a few accessories I might want to try. The developers seem to be extremely competent and I expect content and balancing when things become more apparent. I think when it reaches the top6 games played on steam, you can't really call that a bad RPG. I wouldn't really say I have nothing to do, but I don't feel the like I have any goals at the moment.
Also, I was doing a 1v1 against my buddy, he has a hell set with a muramasa/firemace as well as the cobalt shield and I had cobalt set with flamelash/waterbolt and he absolutely detroyed me in an open field. I was getting all my shots off an doing an ok job dodging, but I couldnt do much. Should I be running balloon/rocketboots as well? Perhaps we should have a more varied arena with ledges and such?

The good part in Terraria is that you can create the areas. Make 3 different arena and play best of 3. I'm pretty sure dynamite will become handy.
BLAH! this game is unbelieveable... I just spent like.. 6-7 hours straight playing alone and with my friend >_< and I just found out there is stuff even ABOVE the ground (basically when we found out that we can't really take out those fire imps and skeletal worms with golden sword/bow and some basic (not even complete) set of armor)..
it's really fun, exploring caves/looking for ores/dwelling deeper/making water go where you want it, making shroom farm (that's what I just did, looks awesome and should provide enough shrooms for even a sizeable party ^_^).

it's quite fun and addictive so far.
thirty thousand some others agree with you. it's pretty ridiculous for a $10 8 bit game to be destroying the stats so hard. it's sucked up literally every spare hour ive had this weekend
also, thanks brambled for hosting the server today, it was lots of fun having 8 of us run around trying to fight off a cthulhu and eater of worlds in copper suits :D
I bet the guys who came up with this one are gonna be on an unbelievable high for awhile. Deservedly so though. Can't wait to see what updates they have in store. So many directions they can go its really limitless.
So far today everyone has been great and server has been a lot of fun. We found some sky islands and beat worm. We have even went into dungeon.
Only problem so far is there is no admin commands to ip ban or kick people form server. Not a huge deal but only 1 problem person so far who will not listen to simple rules. Scaramanga finally went to read post and hopefully will follow rules.
Ok gonna get some sleep but server will stay up overnight for me. If anyone gets on and see someone griefing or anything just throw up a post or pic. Backed up world when i logged off jsut in case.
Brambled's server was a blast, got everything but the underground jungle and the underworld done. Can't wait to try out some PvP stuff on the server before you reset it when we finish that stuff up. Thanks for hosting <3!

Geez, I want the multiplayer soo badly. Imo this game has enormous potential. Right now it has design issues (you work so hard to get that molten armor set only to find out you have nothing to do with it), it is somewhat too short in SP and doesn't reward base-building enough.
But what is there is an excellent framework to make an extremely fun game. All of the above problems are soluble, and I can't wait for the first content release.

I tell you, multiplayer is the shit.
I had kinda fun dwelling around alone, making my underground cave and then above ground house, but when I made a server (via tunngle, good stuff, recommended) and my friend came in, we went on teamspeak, it was much more fun.
finally finding skeletons and being scared so while one is sending them away other quickly builds a wall to barricade us from them, then simultaneously 'quick-digging' a vertical shaft (2 people digging at once ftw! you go down so quickly), or fighting squads, helping the other guy with arrows while he's slashing at those enemies.. Fun stuff Or lolling when you die once in a 3 hour session while your friend tries to get back again and again and keeps dying so while you wait you dig further find a fire imp who hits you and you fall to lava and die losing gold coins ( that fall into lava ). Still you get back faster than your friend and go on. Then you find out that water + lava = good stuff, and you end up directing a LOT of water to a bit of lava so then you do underwater mining and almost drown 5x while worms are trying to get you. Totally worth it :D
Really, multiplayer is the best But it's always like that. Adding a social aspect to the game makes it much better and more fun.
At work right now will reset server asap. Seems to happen on a few servers that stay on 24/7. Might be some kinda issue with game. Hopefully be back up in a couple hours.
My server is up (I'm on both TL Terraria Hamachi networks) if anyone wants to play. Still a reasonably new world, but I found the jungle to the left if anyone is interested--drop through a 1500-foot hole in the desert to the left (you should land in water, so you don't die).
Hey guys. I know Hamachi is known as the norm for lan emulation over an online connection, but there's a better alternative.
Some of you guys may have heard of it, it's calledTunngle. I highly recommend those that are hosting the servers to check this out. It has support directly for games like these and there are tutorials available for noobs that haven't used applications like tunngle or hamachi before. You guys can stick to Hamachi if you want, but in my experience, Tunngle has given me a much stabler connection.

Also maybe in a few days I will host a 2nd server for pvp only and will build a big ass arena and set up some stuff so people can join in and fight.

Controls Right clicking and holding on a crafting recipe will craft multiple of the same item to a max of the stack and/or until you run out of materials.
Items NEW ITEM : Sticky Bombs, Requires 5 Gel and a Bomb. Sand Duping bug fixed. Placing a bed far from the spawn no longer causes a player who has set their spawn there to crash on join. Mining stone and other hard ores make a 'tink' noise now. Hellstone and Obsidian now require at least a Demonite pick to gather. Sand no longer spawns within a certain distance of the spawn location, This should remove the chance of spawning in a desert with no wood to use. Hellstone now correctly takes as long to dig as meteor does. The clay pot item now has the correct size.
Performance Frame-skip is now correctly ON by default for new players. Increased Client Side Multiplayer stability. Should resolve many crash causes. Corrected a bug where players would intermittently not take falling damage. The world file is now saved to a temporary file that is copied over to the actual save file. This prevents world corruption when saving is interrupted. Fixed a bug that disabled some error handling. Overall game stability should be improved.
GUI The version number of the game now shows on the title screen. Typing numbers in chat no longer changes your selected item in your hotbar.
Server Servers now listen to all IP addresses on the hosting PC, regardless of how many network connections are active. Typing "localhost" instead of your own local IP address will connect to your own same-PC server. The games default port is no longer ELEET (31337) it is now 7777. Client will now resolve a hostname into its IP address, for example, if randomsite.org ran a server, you could type randomsite.org as the IP address and be able to connect.
That crafting change is awesome and those bugfixes as well.

I'm in gold/silver atm. I plan on doing eye of cthulu and start smashing orbs so i can get some better stuff.
First i have to get a hook from skeletons though. Seems like the grappling hook is really required.
If you have a good stock of potions and more than 200 health, go for the dungeon, a lot of good items(murasama, cobalt shield...), and you can farm bones on mobs for a full necro set. Then, go go hellstone.
Holy crapola. I kill cthulu, kill the goblin army and a blood mooon comes up as i defeat the army. Really?? Well after holding all that off i ended up with some nice stuff
Got rocket boots and a harpoon (sweet ass weapon). :D Now to find a hook
BTW what happens if one of your npcs die? Do they come back after awhile? My demo guy died cause it was so crazy.
HOLY CRAP!! I love this game sooooooooooooo much. So worth 10 bucks. Just found eater of worlds and got killed 1 time i was in a cave when i spawned him and it was a terrible spot to fight.
Got some nice gear though woooooooooohooooooooooooo
That change to crafting makes me incredibly happy. Maybe I'll actually get back to work on my sky wood bridge.
Also finally managed to kill Skeletron last night, though I admit I did it in a fairly cheap way. Had my Star Cannon and about 70 stars, and then finished him up with my Phoenix Blaster (I had stolen the hand gun from a chest in the dungeon while avoiding flying skulls previously.) Think I got all the chests in the dungeon, but I can't be sure as it's really hectic with the crazy amount of enemies spawning. I can't complain with the loot though, as it was almost entirely new. Muramasa, Blue Moon, Magic Missle, the knockback accessory, Cloud in a Bottle, and the only repeat being another Boomerang.

I got mine from eater of worlds i think. Maybe the goblin army honestly don't know. So many things happened in like an hour i didn't check loot forever.
hmm, I'm gonna go try to get them. And are there any non hamachi servers that I can play on with all my gear n stuff, I don't like not having my items. lol
Wellll, after 43 hours clocked 'officially' (more like 30 non-idle/actual playtime hours) i consider the game beaten.
I've killed every shadow orb on my world (i think) and flooded a good quarter of hell, killed every boss, been entirely through the dungeon, survived 3 goblin attacks and gotten everything except Sunfury, Necro armor and Cobalt Armor.
I have an immense supply of extra items and random ore and such and I'm all kinds of willing to run around different servers helping folks kill bosses or just hang out and socialize
If anyone wants any help killing/mining/building or has a specific item request please feel free to send me a PM and I'll do what I can!
Still, game is awesome, definitely payed for itself considering the single player in any given 60$ FPS is like 4-6hrs of playtime i'd say at around 30hrs of single player time it was extremely worth it!
Lawl, it's amazing what some good gear and a few extra hearts can do for boss killing. I couldn't kill Skeletron with 200 HP and the Minishark (that's when I created the Star Cannon and took him down.) I have 280 HP now, and created a new small world to take him down.
Find the dungeon, clear out the area a bit, and set up my bar with Sunfury/Phoenix Blaster and potions. Night hits and as soon as I talk to the Old Man, I get a "You feel an evil presence watching you." The Eye appears at around 3k health, and I just burn Skeletron down before taking care of the Eye.
Can't wait to try this out, I bought the 4 pack off of steam to lan with my buddies this weekend. Trying to resist the temptation not to play before then, so hard!

I plan to construct a lot of interesting features on this world, and once they are done I'll be holding CTF and PvP games! Come help construct epic!
Edit: Due to the number of people joining, I'm going to start IP banning people that come and screw around. So if you're afk or just running around hitting things you'll be banned!
So just had some massive griefers come into server.
This is screen of those connected. Krisaga and Mrs.Finley were tossing dynamite all over base.
Shut down server but base is in bad shape right now. Not sure if Overdose or Fenko were part of it yet.
So starting tomorrow I am going to make a separate thread and you will need to make request there to get server password and I will pm them out to people who have been part of TL for more than a couple days.
Just played 9 hours straight of this. Dug to Hell and now making an ivory tower ;D I don't intend to really make a substantial dent in this game, but its a good time-waster!
I found out there's a backup world file in C:\Users\Cecil\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds
However my backup file still had my entire castle gone. So my suggestion is for people to start backing up their worlds periodically and use a password.
Okay server is up for anyone that wants to join! IP: 98.247.33.243
It's a small world rendered, and it's password protected. PM with your character name and IP if you'd like to join! Don't know what your IP is? CHeck here: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ I'll be reconstructing my castle and everything else. Feel free to join me or explore the world!

Cecil something happened to your server after you logged off. The time starting going crazy. It went night and day like 27 times in a few minutes and monsters were bugged out O.o not sure what was going on.

I've seen so many people say they never get hooks but I don't understand how.
I have found no less than 10, I have 6 or 7 in a box right now + a grappling hook and a vine hook thing and I've given away 3 or 4 to friends lol
I dunno, maybe it's just luck of the draw but if you'd like you're more than welcome to one of mine
EDIT: Also, i mean, I'm positive you know this, but make sure you have an empty slot in bags lol
Btw., I wouldn't go for IP-based protection. You can't be sure that your IP will stay the same, you should just go for password protection. Same for IP-banning, the technique is not safe and doesn't really add security.

I never remember picking up one up, but I randomly had one in my inventory at one point and was like "yay, grappling hook time!" That was the only one I've ever picked up.
Gas balloons... You kidding me bro? Thats fucking AWESOME! They should add oil into the game O.o 3rd liquid to have :D
I saw some people talking about adding clockwork type items to build clockwork cities.
Lots of good ideas flowing around right now for where to go next so it'll be interesting.
Hook: I got mine last night finally on Cecil's server. Took forever but finally have it. Must say its very nice. I just slayed a billion skele's to find mine so keep at it.

How have I never seen Clonk before? That game looks absolutely AWESOME. I would have played the shit out of that when I was younger. I hope Terraria steals an idea or two from that.
I got a message saying a Meteor has landed, and i was wondering is that always near my house atleast decently? or can it be in any direction as far as the edge? :O

Can be anywhere on the map, as far as I know - even floating islands, though I haven't experienced that myself. I have seen meteors land on complete opposite sides of the map, though.
I got a meteor about 300 feet from the end of my map *medium world*
Also had one the opposite direction about 1500 feet from my spawn where my house is. So they are very random. Had a 3rd hit earlier and still have to look for it. Very worth while finding them though. Meteorite is awesome.
yeah i found it, after i checked all the left side, it was almost all the way to the right. and once i finished mining the Meteorite, which is difficult btw lol a second one fell, and i decided smartly to finish looking right, and it was like 2 feet away lol ^.^ the mana regen is pretty nice, but idk if i'd take it over my Demon Armor stuff i just got
Yeah, I was really unlucky with my meteorite drops on my main world; by the time my first one dropped, I was already decked out in full Molten armor, which give a crazy amount of defense and is great for exploring dark places with the torch like movement effect.
Yeah, Molten is made from Hellstone Bars. I hardly ever wear it though, I switch between Cobalt set and Shadow set. The 10 defense set bonus is worthless compared to the other set bonuses and not to mention it's probably broken.
yeah i went to that Pinkish looking thing on my Map to see what it was, and the guy wouldnt let me in before i cured his curse, which i had already did somehow. and when i was going down everything looked normal and calm, when suddenly a giant skull came upwards and did 9964 damage or something stupidly high, what do you guys do against that?>

Talk to the Old Man at night. Should be pretty obvious what to do once you do that.

Lol, so I played for about an hour yesterday and the second skeleton that I killed dropped a hook :p
FINALLY!!!! I was pretty close to the lava though, I dont know if depth played a part in it or not.

I'd say it doesn't really matter how deep it is. True thing is me and my friend got lucky and got 2+1 hooks pretty early. Since then I haven't seen a single other hook.

He hits for 9999 damage during daytime. Noticed because my friends world bugged, and the old man disappeared, so our only way of fighting him was going into the dungeon during nighttime, and fight ~16 of thos skulls at once, and when the first of them died, regular skeletons started spawning in the dungeon while we still had 15 or so skulls remaining...
We did manage to loot 5 chests before killing skeletron tho!
Guess i'll have to use a different strategy on him this time. Found the jungle though. Its pretty sweet. Sucks because right as i started finding some nice stuff i have another goblin army show up so i had to go back to my house to defend >.>
I wish there were better offensive spells. Like if they made Water Bolt and Flower of Fire go through walls like their respective enemy spells do, there might be some incentive to use them instead of just running around with the Phoenix Blaster and Sunfury.
On May 26 2011 13:47 pachi wrote: Just fight things with a bucket of lava. Keeps it interesting.
That's how I've been farming the Eater of Worlds and Bone Serpents.
Multiple platforms with shallow lava so they kill themselves as they pop out of the ground at me.
That actually works? I guess I could see since it's user placed lava but both enemies you mentioned are supposed to be immune. :o
Hmm, you're right. All worm creatures are immune to lava.
I checked, and I've been using Vile Powder and not Lava to kill them. I use Lava to farm hornets (which still refuse to drop the Cobalt Chestplate I need...)

Don't have to worry about that. If I recall, all updates/add-ons are supposed to be free. =]
Ya i fear i'm getting close to finishing. Still haven't gotten all the armor/weapons which i plan on doing prior to waiting for an update.
Still haven't killed skeletron >.>
I got "Ball O' Hurt" yesterday seems kinda mehhh. Unless its an AoE situation even then most swords/other weapons do good aoe damage.
It would be cool if they put some item in the game that allowed each weapon to have a specific "Finisher" move with a special graphic. Drained your mana etc.
Also have to finish getting all my mana. Only have 60 atm. Stars seemed rare to me.
Man I was really on the edge about buying this game or not, so glad I did. My roommate and I easily just spent the greater half of the last day just messing around on this game. If anybody reading this thread is still undecided on whether they should get the game or not just do yourself a favor and get it! So worth the 9.99
after 36 hours of play I got to the 'end', totally worth the $10 and then some. looking forward to all the content updates the devs are talking about, and if they want to charge for an expansion I'll buy that too.
only real complaint I have about the game is how sky bridges screw up meteor landings.
my life has been this game for the past week. When I walk outside, I feel the urge to cut down every tree I see, and I get excited to see silver colored tiles near grey ones. FFFUUCK I NEED TO STOP PLAYING THIS GAME
playing this with friends especially is the best keke

Yeah it's insanely addicting. Playing with friends is hilarious, we were mining out hell telling stories for hours and seeing someone dig through into lava never gets old. I recommend large worlds too, takes fucking forever to find shit.
Had a blast this last week playing on a large server with my 3 brothers. It's too bad that there's no longer any real reason to play once you have everything, as building crap doesn't feel fulfilling. PvP is ok for a little while though. Full Meteor + Rocket Boots + Balloon + 3x Starpower Band + Starfury/Pheonix Blaster/Magic Missile is my pvp build of choice. ^^
If anyone was on the fence, worth the $10 ten times over, and hopefully if a lot of new content is released we can do the same thing next summer. But until then, it's back to Minecraft for me. Terraria just doesn't have the same long-term hold as it does.

I pretty much agree, but I'm about the cobalt/hellstone armor. Pheonix blaster and muramasa makes the game almost unfair with those armors and the lucky horseshoe
I really hope they expand the game, I've beaten it after about two days of gameplay. I hope they can find a way to add some more reasons to stay in a world too. For instance I built a massive castle in a friend's world, and by the time it was finished, we had killed all the bosses and all the shadow orbs, found the jungle and the floating island. Other than aimlessly mine hellstone, what else is there to do?
Some more explosive weapons would be awesome too, bombs and dynamite are awesome and all, especially with rocket boots (carpet bombing anyone?) but long range rockets and things like that would make sieging enemy houses amazing.
I love this game! I'm just at an awkward point because every time I go down to Hell, I only get to mine 10 ore or so before 2 fire imps and a bone serpent spawn :/. The worst I've had was 3 bone serpents and 2 fire imps, it's ridiculous. And I don't know if I can do Skeletron with just shadow scale armor.
Hellstone mining w/ everyone holding a watercandle is the most fun thing to do ahahaha
Also Dirt Rod is fuckin epic lol
and I've been thinking of PvP ideas during classes and such.. one of them being "Capture the Angel Statue" haha clearing out land and such for it would take some work though..

If you join up FagelBagel or crate's server, I may be able to give you some extra hellstone bars that I have lying around.
Speaking of which, are all the Hamachi servers down? I haven't been able to log in anywhere and it would be a shame if the worlds died, since there's a bunch of invested time in them... Well anyway, let me know.
Also, creating worlds for boss/dungeons are especially awesome when each using your best character and there's one dude who's starting from scratch. The goal is to keep the "freshie" alive, while taking him/her on your adventures. This person gets dibs on all treasure (including hearts and stars) and weapons, but each person may choose to keep 1 item that they have found, even though the "freshie" calls dibs. This creates a whole new dynamic to the game and makes teamwork all the more important.
By the time you complete the world, the "freshie" should be powerful enough to be a strong warrior in the next world.
edit: I also forgot to mention that when doing this type of game, each strong warrior must have a water candle in their inventory, to make the game much more exciting. :þ
In the long term, we will not just be adding content, but new mechanics as well. Some of the ideas the we have been playing around with are:
Pure PvP servers with team based objectives. Worlds will be generated before every match. Imagine a CTF server where towers are automatically created on either side of the map. Players can fight it out on the surface, or try to tunnel into the other tower.
Adding sloped/inclined tiles to make the world smoother.
New harder world types to continue game progression (Ex: Alien plants, alternate dimensions, evil worlds, etc.)
Enemy factions that will move into your world, and build their own city. You can slaughter them while they are weak, or let them build up their strength to get better rewards.
More events: Volcanoes, earthquakes, more/improved invasions, etc..
Weather: Seasons, snow, floods, etc..
Farming, and stamina system that gives a bonus to player stats.
Mechanics for making traps and devices.
Terraria has endless possibilities, and there is still a lot more that we want to do with it. In the meantime, please be patient while we get the last few kinks worked out.
This game is definitely worth 10 bucks. I can't wait till they add more and more cool features to the game. If anyone wants help with killing bosses or farming any kind of material, im down to help!
Some of the things I made on my own world.
My bedroom inside my unfinished house.
Remade the first pipe in Mario for my 2nd PvP Arena. For some reason I couldn't upload my screenshot of the rest of the Mario level above the pipe.
And I made something special I made for TeamLiquid seeing how this is my first post lol.
I'm also starting to remake some of the maps from Super Smash Brothers for more PvP arenas.

Agree. Which is also why a lot of the comparisons to Minecraft have been somewhat misplaced.
Sure there are a few mechanics that are similar.
But the core gameplay is wildly different. Minecraft is about creativity, Terraria is about character progression and hack'n'slash. When you have done it all in Terraria and have everything, theres not much incentive to keep playing - as the contruction part is limited in dimensions, options and presentation. And in Minecraft there no goals, except the ones you set for yourself.
Both games are well worth their price, but talking which of the two is better is definately a case of apples and oranges.
But theres definately some potential for expansion of Terraria - and looking forward to seeing additional content.

Not sure if this was posted but here is a nice interview with one of the dev's, reassures me that the new content will be amazing
Hi everyone, i've been playing Terraria currently for the last week or so and i cannot find the vines that i need for a ivy whip.....its driving me mad, how do would i find one faster? man eating plant.....yeah i was told they drop them but i have killed atleast 25+ and nothing....not ever one... also is there any news of new bosses or more content??

I'm really looking forward the future content as the game got dried pretty quick for me. But that was already a good experience.
I also got to the end game rather quickly and feel pretty bored and unmotivated to keep playing.
as a result, I am trying to set up a terraria event tomorrow where we all start new characters, have 30 minutes to find items, then have a massive PvP fest to decide the winner. blow it all up then do it again.

Honestly you should have found some by now. I found a couple in the first man-eater i killed so just make sure you inventory isn't full i guess. :/
I found mine in a grand total of 2 random accidental run ins with the underground jungle....guess it's just luck.
I also made the flying jungle disc of death which is pretty sweet so far. Also, the pistol you buy from the dude at the shop is actually pretty sweet xD
I don't think it will be too much longer till the first content patch, probably the next week or two.
I know they've taken the zapinator out of the game but i was wondering if anyone has any idea of how i could obtain one, need that and then i've got everything
Player Players can no longer repeatedly double jump after touching the top of the world.

Corrected a bug that was causing the Server to send out liquid as water when it should have been lava. Clients are now able to connect to ports other than 7777. Slimes are synced better on multiplayer games. Accessories now correctly sync between players. New monsters (shark, jellyfish, crabs [the tasty kind], desert mobs). Haven't been down to hell yet, soul eaters move differently, have yet to try buffs.
Edit: Shallow lava pits no longer work Slightly less shallow lava do however! :D
Mud bricks no longer build in a straight line without supports D:
i started a new character, and i'm not liking the reduced slime encounter rate that made it "easier for new players." it's so hard to find gels in the beginning for torches...
How'd you do that? I'm trying to start a mushroom farm, but that looks equally enticing!
It isn't any more complicated than it looks. Just put 3 rows of mud 1 space apart so that the mushrooms can grow and leave 3 empty rows to walk through after each set of 3 mud rows. You can hit all 3 rows of mushrooms with a big sword like muramasa, so they're easy to gather. It's really a lot more mushrooms than you will ever need, though.

I bought the game on yesterday's Steam sale and it's been pretty fun so far; however, I feel like I'm missing something.
My "town" has several homes now; I have the guide, the merchant and the nurse, managed to forge some iron/silver/gold equipment already and found/built some interesting stuff (boomerang, grappling hook, magic mirror).
However, I seem to be desperately short on health and mana. So far, I've crafted a single +20 mana star, and found only one health heart somewhere underground. I've explored my little world in all directions and can't progress further east (corruption), west (hellstone) or south (lava/fire-shooting wtfimba enemies). All enemies beyond the standard slimes or zombies are either too tough or deal too much damage for me to survive; and I'm in full iron armor and wielding a gold broadsword, so I think I'm not completely unprepared.
You will need to seach different caves and underground systems for hearts in order to get more health.
If you are having trouble surviving i would reccomend that you make alot of health potions. If you dont know how to make potions look up the terraria wiki .

The problem is that I've dug quite a number of pits and shafts, several of them leading down to the Underworld, and I've only found a single heart. I realize that I have to dig to find stuff, but I find my quota to be pretty bad.

The jungle is good for this. The jungle is is usually a few thousand feet to the east underground. The enemies are pretty strong but quite immobile so you shouldnt have that much problems even with low health. And you might also want to build a house there so that you dont have to walk again everytime you die. Theres also loads of other cool stuff to be found in the jungle

Whoa underground jungle is a bit rough for a dude with only like silver and 120 hp. I suggest just don't dig as many tunnels and try find caves. Go laterally and look for some caves. Can normally find a few hearts like that. Although the new worlds seem a bit different with hearts.
Can someone please tell me what the hell those mouth thingies are that are found in Corruption (and sometimes outside it) ? They're static, if you beat them with a gold hammer you take half yer hp in dammage (never kills tho) and I can't find anything about them on wikia etc.
And you need them to forge Night's Edge as well. I found that out yesterday after wondering why I couldn't do so at a normal anvil.
My initial difficulties with enemy damage and my own health quickly vanished after I found out about Spelunker potions. After seeing the recipe on the Terraria wiki, I quickly crafted some from the materials I had in stock and proceded to find several chest, hearts and tons of ore.
I found that the game progressed very rapidly once you reach a certain level of equipment. From the point that I crafted my first phase blade, it took me substantially less time in total to:
- craft meteor armor, hellstone weapons and tools, shadow armor - defeat all bosses - pillage multiple dungeons
than I had spent in the game before. Especially the weapons make a tremendous difference; where trying to defeat Skeletron with a phase blade and a Ball'O'Hurt took me the complete night and 20 health pots, doing so with a Fiery Greatsword and Molten Fury took two minutes and three potions.
Also, some of the equipment found later on is ridiculously strong, like the Muramasa, while the supposed "best sword in the game", the Night's Edge, plain sucks considering the alternatives and the difficulty of acquiring the parts (I crafted one after finding my second Muramasa).
What I'd like to see in future updates is a difficulty choice for more challenging games, more bosses, and maybe some sort of aoe mining with advanced pickaxes (like mining 2 or 4 blocks of "soft" materials like dirt instead of just one).

Demon altars can be destroyed if they spawn on sand and you cause the sand to fall by mining the blocks underneath it, but that probably doesn't help you.

I just picked up this game a few days ago. Just playing solo on a medium map to learn. Gotten down to lava areas, I have a gold tool & weapon set as well as a silver armour set. Any tips on what to do next? I've tried to make my way down a corruption hole, but I always fall to the bottom and die.

Farm skeletons and hope to get a hook so you can craft a grappling hook with it by combining with 3 iron chains, also explore natural caves to find crystal hearts and improve your max health, build multiple houses (back wall, door that opens both ways, table and chair, and a light source qualify as a home) so that you can get a merchant to move it etc, the guide automatically moves into the first house so you will need more than one, or one with several rooms. Hope this helps some.
Think I'm gonna buy this game in a few days, I have one other "sandbox" style game but its where you make and look at galaxy's and solar systems so this should be a big change. Hopefully some of you guys can show me some tips when I get it, should be in a few days though. Game reminds me of Mario for some reason which is why I'm getting it, I love chilled out games, there few and far between these days for me I usually just play games that have a competitive "scene" behind them.

The other game you're talking about is Universe Sandbox, which is nothing like Terraria, but totally awesome as well.
Also, if you're just starting, don't read up on Terraria, try to avoid the Wiki etc for the first few hours or days. It'll be much more fun exploring that way .
So when growing mushroom grass is there any special requirement? I put it on a mudspot that has access to many other mud tiles, I tried with a torch as lightning and no lightening at all, but the grass wont spread to adjacent tiles

you need to be below sea level (when there are stones in the backdrop)
I managed to finish my house in single player today. Before, I had little more than a cave with a door for myself and holes in the ground with doors for the NPCs; this one here is a bit more comfortable for all involved.
So I was hoping somebody could help me out with my total noob question. I havent really done much in the multiplayer aspect, even more so in hosting my own server.
My buddy just got the game and really wants to be able to play with me online, and I was trying to figure out how I can find the IP address he needs to type in for us to play on the same world.

Considering purchasing this game, but watching people play it seems more appealing than actually playing it. Looking at the gigantic thread of player-made houses is quite a time killer, but in a good way.
I wish Cortex Command would go in the direction Terraria is.

If you have the spare money I definitely recommend it. I just picked it up a few days ago and let me tell you has it been cutting in to my SC time (in a good way)!
Alright, I'm concidering buying this but I have some questions. I googled a bit but I couldn't find the answers so I figured I might as well ask here.
Do I need to set up my own server? If yes, how complicated is this. I have no experience with pc gaming except with big titles (aka SC2 insert disc and go).
If I buy this I want to play this with a friend. Is it possible to play with just 2 people on a server? (not through lan).
Last but not least, how complicated is this? I plan to play this with a friend who has zero experience in gaming, is this a good place to start? It seems very casual in the way that you can just mess around forever.

Tyvm in advance.
Server is very easy to setup, you basically just click a button. In order for your friend to connect to your server, you're going to want to google your own IP address "what is my ip" and tell him what it is. You don't need a lan.
Controls are simple... the game is mostly digging, some fighting, and building at your leisure.
I don't understand games like Terraria and Minecraft. They're really fun at first but once you've got all items and stuff I don't really know what to do next. It's like the game is over.

You'll probably have to allow port forwarding on your router to port 31337 (seriously) and as a pair of exceptions on Windows Firewall (incoming and outgoing) if you want a host a game. Might be obvious to some, but the last time I tried to host a direct TCP/IP connection was the better part of 12 years ago
I also found/added port 7777 for Terreria as well, but I'm not sure if that one's valid.
I found myself in love with a pirate version of Terraria, then bought it in steam, "finished" it 3 or 4 times it, I consider finishing when you have the best armor set (molden) and weapons, since by then there is no more challenge. I would certainly call it one of the best games for the price
I got it for 2.50 and I got around 20 hours out of the game so I definitely got my moneys worth. I was mostly playing with friends so it made it a ton more fun. While when i played alone I just was bored and went to play something else.
It's basically just a pure injection of content and endgame that have been needed for months, and I'm really excited. I'm planning on playing it through with my main, my secondary, and a new char to get everything I can out of it. Also, I can't wait to play multiplayer and find out if they fixed the lag issues.
1.1 supposedly tomorrow. Can't wait to play through this game again. At the start of summer I played through it with my 3 brothers, was a huge blast, and now there's so much more to look forwards to too. ^^

Yeah haha, when pushing towards the post-1.1 items rebuilding them was just too expensive and they had negative prefixes on the initial craft, so I was using pre-1.1 items when farming my first few souls of sight.
I didn't realize how much stuff they added. I've got to round up my friends and play this some more. The biggest thing I noticed gameplay wise (besides content) is the lighting changes. My orb of light is now garbage and I have to use my weapons to provide most of my light as I go.

yeah they're not taking each other out, just like jungle and corruption, remember that when corruptor's projectiles will hit the ground they will change 5 or more tiles to corrupted ones.
rocket boots/spectre boots - stack with wings giving great anmount of fly time
Hey guys, got a question for the Terraria veterans.
Is there anyway to save my characters location when I exit the game? Im in the underground jungle atm and I find it really tiresome having to make a 10 min walk to where I left off everytime I enter the game because it starts me off at same spawn point above ground.

What was weirder for me was that when I entered hard mode, two clasms of corruption became the hallow.
And I agree. They do not contaminate each other. However, purification powder can turn corruption into normal blocks, which then have a chance to become the hallow. Since hallow is easier to deal with than corruption, I have been doing this a lot.
I have to complain about this though. The corruption mechanics is way too overpowered.
EDIT: I have another question.
I am trying to fight Skeletron Prime and the Twins right now. Which is better? Magic or Ranged? First of all I tried melee and it failed miserably. I think I have to go Magic or Ranged. Currently I have a very good Megashark and tons of Crystal Bullet (thanks to my intentional spread of underground hallow and crystal farms), a lot of souls for crafting Crystal Storms, and I can also make a Harp if I really want to.
I've still having trouble with making my spawn point underground. I have a bed and I'm using gray bricks and gray brick wall. The problem is that I'm in the underground jungle atm and it won't let me put up the gray brick wall. So I figure maybe its that natural mud wall so I use my copper hammer to remove the background and nothing. I'm completely baffled.

Hard mode gives Corruption the ability to cross Stone and Desert, but I believe it's still stopped by Clay and Mud and possibly a few others. Might wanna use some purification powder to drive it back and bit and then set up a wall. With Corruptors able to spread it with their spit, don't want them spawning too close and flying over to say hi.
Orb of light is indeed pretty terrible, though slightly better than digging in the dark. The upgrade in Hard Mode is ok, but gives up colored light so still not as good as the old one (moves faster, though). You can cycle through four different coloring modes with F9, though I only found two of them helpful (current and what I assume was the old one).
For the bosses that aren't Destroyer, I tried melee and realized it was pointless. Then I just lamed out with gravitation potions and a Megashark. Meteor/Cursed shot. Still barely got the Twins down before sunrise on the first kill or two. Melee likely can't put out the dps required since they run out of normal melee range. Might be able to make Magic work with numerous pots (especially if you rig up some mana star statues), but Ranged is by far the simplest. Megashark or Repeater.

You have to remove background walls from the edge. Can't just smash them down from the center. So you'd have to find an edge of the underground jungle... at which point you could just make a bed there instead of smashing a line in the background mud to where your initial spot was going to be. Other than the jungle (and dungeon, of course), there's no actual background below the dirt level.
Also, holiday update scheduled for tomorrow. Snowmen and shit.

If you have Night's Edge, even it's base stats are actually better than the Cobalt and Mythril swords and only marginally weaker than the Adamantite Sword. A Night's Edge with a good prefix is worth keeping until you have Excalibur.

IIRC you can't make a house below Cavern level, and even in normal underground, removing the natural dirt walls is a pain.
Honestly, it's much easier to make an above-ground house and then dig/blast a drop shaft down to the depth you want.

Mud actually gets converted to corruption at a slower rate, so it doesn't actually stop the spread. Not sure about Clay, but the only materials I've felt 100% safe with are artificial (wood, bricks, etc.). Even then, you have to completely isolate the area you want to keep clean, since the corruption can spread underground or through small gaps, and building a surface-level wall won't stop it from eventually tunnelling under unless you essentially make yourself a floating island. That said, making completely isolated islands/chambers is probably worthwhile for preserving your ability to access certain resources (e.g. I made the necessary improvements to my glowing mushroom farm to protect it, since getting all the mushroom grass in the world eventually converted to corruption kinda sucks).
On December 14 2011 13:58 Sufficiency wrote: I have to complain about this though. The corruption mechanics is way too overpowered.
I think the whole concept behind it is that defeating the Wall of Flesh effectively dooms your world. There's no feasible way to stop the complete takeover of Corruption/Hallow, save a few pockets of well-designed anti-Corruption defenses that you hopefully got to put in place, and I think this is 100% intentional. Sort of an interesting Doomsday scenario where if you want the power of the new stuff, you damn your world in the process.

You can make a house underground in the normal cavern areas; they have no background walls. The Underground Jungle has a built-in actual mud wall background, so you cannot build a house in the jungle unless you remove the wall (a huge pain). You can easily build one just outside of the jungle though.

No teleport thingy. The best way is to make an Hellevator. Straight down to Hell. :d ( with water, or cobweb, or having a lucky horse shoe.

What I did was dig two paths going straight down and relatively close by eachother. One path is completely open, and I basically fall all the way to the bottom of my mineshaft, only stopping at the end from cobwebs I put up c=. The other one has platforms, allowing me to jump my way back to the top. It took an hour+ to build, but it was so worth it at the end as I had to zig-zag my way through various tunnels just to get to where I needed to be.

You could build a mini 'house' underground. Like 6x8 with background wall, a door and a bed. Right click on the bed and it ll set you a new spawn point.

That's not a bad idea as where I am right now I have little reason to go above surface level. I like the mineshaft idea too... could just put wooden platforms every few feet and hold down to drop as far as I need to, could climb back up that way too.
i build a free fall shaft and make sure there i land in water. Now there is some purple mineral i cannot remove so tehre is my swimming pool and im going around there. Guess i could start a 2nd shaft under my 1st one we will see ^^
You can blow up a lot of stuff that you can't mine through yet with dynamite. I think the purple you can't remove might be obsidian, which is what happens when lava meets water. Dynamite helps, or better pickaxes.
If you make a free fall shaft, i would strongly advise against using wooden platforms in it, since it will take you forever to get down lateron. The most efficient one with a way up that is not a mirror/logging out was a 4-6 tiles wide free fall shaft with solid walls (or doors) on its whole length. You can get up pretty fast with your grappling hook, faster then jumping on wooden platforms. And if you want to go for the platform thing, build a second shaft for that, and place the platforms in ideal jumping distance, and especially important equidistant from each other, because that way you can simply have a rhythm and don't really have to worry a lot when you go up.
LOVED playing this game with a few of my friends. Probably one of the funnest sandbox games i've played in a long time. Only part that saddened me was when the creator "finished" the game and moved on to make something else.
So I hadn't played Terraria in quite some time, and when I had stopped playing I actually wasn't too far in progression (hadn't even smashed a single shadow orb) but I recently started playing it again and made a ton of progress, so much so that I've got a full Molten set of armor, a Sunfury, a Night's Edge, and pretty much all the Molten tools. I've also made an obsidian shield, and spectre boots and most of the stuff I figured would be useful (I even made the Link vanity clothes because, well, they're awesome)
So my next step then is to throw the doll into the lava to fight the Wall of Flesh, at which point I understand that Hardmode triggers and the world gets a little crazy.
My question then is what exactly do I need to do before triggering this? I've read up on it a bit and apparently corruption starts to spread like mad and monsters spawn that can destroy your base and I've spent a lot of time building a nice base with all of my crafting stations and storage chests and NPCs that I'd really like to NOT lose that when I go into hardmode.
Any of you with hardmode experience in this game have any advice for me?
So when you say defensive systems, are you talking like lava moats and walls and stuff?
When I get home I'll post a pic of my base layout. Part of it is underground and then it kind of builds up out of the cave. Do I have to worry about corruption getting in?
You don't need anything special for hardmode. Unless your spawn area actually gets converted into corruption (rare) you can just make it into hallow and have no problems. Hallow near your spawn is not a problem, npcs will happily live there.
Having a good weapon (high damage per hit, not just high dps) is a plus though since hardmode enemies have huge defense and lots of hp. They also hit really hard but you can deal with that by just not getting hit.
Setting up isolated mushroom farms beforehand is also somewhat nice, as finding uncorrupted ground to plant mushrooms becomes rarer and rarer in hard mode.
I'll start up a hardcore character tomorrow kiwi and see if I can't catch up to you. Shouldn't take too long to tech up to demonite. Terrified of hardmode though from what I've seen so far, lol

It should give you a pretty decent idea on how to get it set up.
After that, the person hosting should follow the following post, taken from another forum
Go to Control panel. Under "Network and internet" click the "view network status and tasks" now on the left side panel under "Control Panel Home" click "Change adapter settings". You should see Hamachi in this folder. press alt to bring up file menu and under "advanced" click "advanced settings". there u go ... now select hamachi and use the arrow on the right to bring it to the top of the list. Tell me if you get hamachi working ingame. Ive been trying this for a while now and have had no luck. what games are you going to be playing via Hamachi?
Once that's done, when you set up a server in Hamachi, the other person should be able to join on your Hamachi IP.
If you don't have control over the ports I think it's only possible locally. I have heard it should work with Hamachi but I can't tell you if that solved the port problem.
I have had no life the past week playing this game, just such a fun go at your own pace game. I just beat Skeletron for the first time and have been trying to unlock all these gold chests in the dungeon.

Yeah occasionally. Anyway most hardmode bosses are not that hard if you play the ultra-safe time-consuming styles. Just build some sort of arena to deal with them, but depending one what specific boss you need help with
yeah skeletron is easiest with range weapon and even better with wings. Try to farm Wyvern first for access to wings. And since you beat Destroyer, try to farm it more for souls of might for megashark. Take some time to farm and some practice to get used to the boss movement, but wings+megashark is kinda the safe easy way to go
Thought you all should know, Terraria received a massive update a couple months ago. The 1.3 patch hit on June 30th and added tons of new content, including a series of big events that culminate in what is unmistakably a final boss fight. I'm still amazed that Re-Logic has been adding new free content constantly over the years, but I am definitely back to playing the game because of it.
