I really hope Burkie doesn't try to land Nash either. -_- the asking price is ridiculous because of the contract. Fuck that contract forever. Plus, I have a sligtht man crush on Dubisnky and i'd hate the team if he left.
That's why I would never sign a guy to a long-term contract. I understand the reasoning behind it, but with injuries and how volatile a player can get (yeah, you have 1-2 good years and then your numbers drop in a heartbeat; good show!) I wouldn't take the risk. They become an instant liability to your cap space especially in the first 2-4 years of the contract.

Quincey is a nice addition, but he is basically a younger Brad Stuart. Without another legitimate forward to take the pressure off Datsyuk the Wings are going to be out again in the 2nd round.
Franzen isn't worse and Z is pretty much the same his production has just dipped a bit since he doesn't play with Datsyuk anymore. I agree though we need a bit but just a bit more scoring depth.

5-7, depending on the age, the player, the talent etc etc is about as high as I can stomach and anything above five is really hard to accept for most players that aren't Parise or someone of similar talent. 10 is fucking insane no matter who it is, especially considering that it's a flat $7.5 or so almost every season. They chose not to front load it like the Rangers did with Richards, or drop it in the last few like the Devs did with Kovy. That is stupid. The CBA allows it, you take advantage.
I guess it isn't surprising because that franchise is fucking awful from top to bottom and no one seems to really care. They're gonna horribly waste that first they got yesterday, and Johnson, who is above average but definitely not a really good defender or anything, is gonna wither away in Columbus.

Vancouver back on top of the league.

Z seems worse year because his defensive game has gone somewhere. I honestly dont care if the guy only scores 50 points a year because the Red Wings system can work fine with scoring by committee but when you are -3 in a game against a potential Western Conference finalist then there is just something wrong. Howard cant take 40 shots a game.
Lidstrom and Datsyuk cant do it all, all the time. So either the other big guys step up in the playoffs or Holland gets some insurance and gets another 50 pt forward (good luck though, the GMs of crappy teams have all gone insane and are holding their crap players/offering them hilariously expensive contracts and of course the owners are too stupid to realize that their GMs are trash and fire them). But who knows, maybe Emerton or some other highly touted guy will step it up in the playoffs and fill that extra energy hole they were missing the last couple years vs the Sharks.

Hawk you think too much like me. -_-

I hope montreal keeps losing so we can get a good pick and maybe restructure the team

Ales Hemsky is not trade bait any more. Signed a two year deal worth 10mil.
I hope the money magiclly heals his shoulder but that might be askin for alot

This year's deadline is going to look like a snooze, all those peripheral players who could have been rentals for a playoff contender are getting re-signed for a ridiculous amount of money while other teams that should be shedding assets/aiming for draft picks (cough Calgary) are instead fighting tooth and nail for the 8th spot and the chance to be swept in 4 games by Canucks/Red Wings.
|
5 million a year for Hemsky is just absurd. That's what players like Neal and Kesler are getting.
|
That doesn't bode well come free agency. Ridiculous pay days. -_-
|
Good, we're out of playoff contention!
Next objective: reach the bottom of the damn league.
|
That won't happen. The biggest move they could make is fire Ron and bring in Iron Mike to teach the kids to fight with vigor.
|
I don't think that being three points out with two games in hand is being out of playoff contention...

What??? That couldn't be more wrong. That is by no means a bad deal. It's perfectly reasonable as far pay and length of a guy of his skill level.
Dude averages almost .8ppg for his career, and the last six years prior to this he was over .9ppg.
Kesler had three years worth of solid stats when he got paid. The body of work isn't as large.
Neal really only had one outstanding year (riding shotty to arguably the best skater in the league this year), one good one and one solid one that was derailed a bit by injuries. Again, much smaller body of work. He was also a RFA when he reupped I believe.
If there is anything to criticize Edmonton for, it is that they chose to resign him in a market in which they could have easily gotten at least a first + some more for him. However, unless they were to get a stud dman or goalie, which was not likely, this was probably the better option. With that contract, he's still a valuable trade asset for the next two seasons if they fall out of it because even if his ppg stays around .6, he's still only got a year or two left and he's a guy who can easily plug into any top 6 and instantly give a good goal scorer a guy who can feed him the puck from anywhere

Oilers trade Tom Gilbert. Un-fucking-believable. To quote my favorite Oilers blogger:
The Oilers addressed their troubles at defense by dealing their best defenseman. Someone smarter than me will need to explain this transaction.
I hate cheering for this team. The same assholes who were turning the wheels on the 'crucify-Hemsky' bandwagon last week so that everything could be properly spun in the event he was traded are now attempting to rationalize this retarded trade. It makes me so mad because THESE ASSHOLES ARE THE REASON I HAVE TO CHEER FOR A SHITTY HOCKEY TEAM. FUCK. The mob takes another victim - the Oilers' best defenseman who has been a whipping-boy for the media for years. Assholes.

RIP Gilbert, RIP Flaccid's liver
I do not understand how that move is positive in any way.
Save $500k Lose top dman, and a pretty good offensive dman to boot take in another dman who is horrible offensively and roughtly the same in his own end
