The infantry critical is somewhat misleading. The instant death occurs like I said earlier if one entity gets hit at exactly the same time with enough shots to take it's hp down to 0
With the flamethrower there is a chance for it to explode or the guy to carry it to drop it but most of the time if he dies another member in the squad will get it.
This is also applicable to panzershrecks and LMG42s or any other heavy weapon upgrade such as the DP-28 for the soviets or the PTRS.
This graph may also help with weapon damage output as well.

the base game is on sale for $20 until June 30th. http://store.steampowered.com/app/231430/
and the expansion released a few hours ago. the expansion adds 2 new armies for a total of 4 armies/factions/races http://store.steampowered.com/sub/40569/
the original base game that came out a year ago had 2 armies and only 1 "online matchup" because mirror matches were not permitted
now we'll have 4 match ups... so SC2 fans accustomed to 6 matchups might be more comfortable laying out $40 for it. ($20 for base game and $20 for the expansion)
the expansion is heavily focused on improving CoH2 multiplayer. this is an important time for the series.
it'll be interesting to see how well this expansion does as its coming out right in the middle of the famous "Steam Summer Sale".

I'm gonna pick this game up and as I understand it there is only 1 expansion, so the base game and then western fronts?

Western fronts is a standalone expansion so choose which races you want to play.

Western fronts is a standalone expansion so choose which races you want to play. If you buy the western front standalone, you will get the oberkommando west, and US force factions to play as. You will still be playing against the werhmacht and soviet factions, but you need the vanilla version to play as these factions. Same goes for if you just buy the oberkommando or the US forces individually. Basically its Oberkommando west + werhmacht against Soviets + US forces when playing matchmaking.
PS - This game is great, buy it!

I think it's a decent compromise not to split the player base.

I found CoH 2 to be very mediocre compared to CoH1 and lost interest quickly after release. Anyone got experience with the Xpack and new factions (I assume there was a beta for this?). Did the community die out (Friday fight nights, small tourneys and youtube VoDs /w commentaries?

Nope community is stronger than ever actually. Alienware combined with Cevo ran a tournament series that just ended earlier this week in which the prize money was 1000+ euros. You can find the vods that were casted here for the euro cup, and here for the american cup. Rumor has it the winner of the euro cup will face the winner of the american cup in a western front showmatch sometime soon, granted the players are up for it. IMO the euro vods are a bit better from a commentators standpoint, but the guys who the american games Rogers and Pounders are quite entertaining imo. Sunday night fights has been running strong.
At this point i think it is safe to say that the game is just as good as coh1 and it just comes down to preference. Many people on coh2.org bitch about balance, but dont let that deter you becuase most of those posts are irretional and not well thought out. Thats not to say the game couldnt use a few adjustments to make it better, but it is far from "x faction is op lolol".

Good to hear^^! Me and a buddy are going to play some 1v1's and learn the game at the same time, then i guess we can try to kill that ladder! heh probably not. We have no DLC, addons or the expo's so i am kind of worried that people will just win by having bought the extra addons and such, but we will find out.

I'm kinda curious for competitive play, how do the factions work? From my understanding, it is always axis vs allies, so there are no mirror matches and what not. Is this correct, and if so, what determines who gets which faction? Does this also mean that all players have to learn all factions equally as well?

You can get additional commanders as drops in game now. Not sure if it is all of them or not at this point though.Confirm although the permanent ones are exceedingly rare apparently.

They play both races yes. Third game the person who lost the fewest victory points gets to race pick.

You can take a look at the rules that are generally used in most CoH2 tounraments. http://www.esl.eu/eu/coh2/1on1/wfalaunch/rules/

Im getting back into CoH2 now that the exp is out, and im loving it. The US is so much fun to play. I used to play Soviet 100% of the time, but the US is sooo sweeeeet. Game is good.

Has the expansion made the game more balanced? My teammate and I had an unbeatable Wehrmacht strat going on before it dropped, it was just plain exploitative.

Most of the exploits are being patched. Having good team strategy/synergy is part of the game.

I see the cost of Panzer IVs has been raised slightly, that's good to see balance wise.
