The ARMA 3 alpha will be released today and I'm quite hyped for it. The full release will be later this year but you can buy the alpha now for a reduced price. It is of note that the alpha will have mod support (not all tools will be available right from the get go).
ARMA 3 is an upcoming open world tactical shooter video game being developed by Bohemia Interactive. It is expected to be released in Q3 2013. ARMA 3's storyline takes place in the mid-2030s during the fictional Operation Magnitude, a military operation launched by NATO forces fighting in Europe against "Eastern armies" led by a resurgent Iran.
Is the alpha worth buying? Have u tried it? going at their shop and selecting the alpha version doesnt give me any other links to purchase... whats up with that? is it not available yet or am i doing something wrong?
it just went up on steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/107410. I think it is worth it. You can wait until the 15th of march and get a demo version as well if you want to try it out before you buy it, or just wait for the full release (it will be more expensive then though) I'm gonna try it out now

Worth noting is that if you buy it through BI store site, the developers get a bigger cut of the money... however the site is down so bad luck for them I guess.
How's the performance? I'd buy it right now but i'm afraid of it stuttering on my pc. If anyone has an extra lite key I'd really appreciate it
If the code on the supporter edition confirmation email is any indication, I was the first to get an order through, after half an hour of anxiety. It still complains I don't have the game for whatever reason, but it'll sort itself out eventually.
I should have been more clear. Why is DayZ Standalone being made on the engine (modified) of Arma 2 instead of on the same engine as this game.
Edit: Also if anyone has any lite invites available I'd love one. Already buying DayZ standalone so I'm not sure I'd want to buy this game unless I enjoy the multiplayer.
The things that I didn't like about Arma 2 basically only had to do with the AI randomly running off course or not doing what you told them to, so if they've sorted that out then I'll probably love this game.
I pray to god they add all of these features to the Dayz standalone. Have played allot of dayz and so I know the Arma 2 engine. I have been in a lot of situations where these features could have saved my butt or enhance my player experience, it would be a damn shame not seeing them incorporated into the standalone. Think of it, not only would you get a zombie survival game but also a military tactical shooter in one package. One can only hope can't he ?
I think I have to buy this. The arma games are always good for some coop missions mixed with some weird bugs. Buying now takes ~50% off the release price?

Yeah.
If you're a fan of Arma there's no reason not to buy it now because of the discount.
Bought the alpha today, says I get 3 "lite" passes to hand out soon? Is that for "friends" to play beta or alpha? Either way glad I bought it. I'll give my three lite passes away for that arma 2 czech dlc if anyone wants to do that.
The "lite-access" is just the singleplayer-showcases. You can't use multiplayer nor the editor with that.
Also, the three codes don't work yet - inviting people is possible at march 15th (or 14th?). Just to clarify.
Bought it, it's fun, runs surprisingly smooth. Of course, some bugs and needs to be polished (inventory, what the heck) - but overall, if they do it right, that will be a must have for me.
Edit: Dean Hall should've waited to use this engine instead of Take on helicopters engine.

lol what were arma II purchase stats before and after dayz? I hope they don't get their hopes up that they will get a huge amount of customers if there isn't going to be any zombie surviving in this!
The sole reason I couldn't really get into Arma 2 was the very clunky movement and gun play. I was a big tactical shooter fan, so even making a old school rainbow six style mission and playing it just wasn't that fun.
I think I might actually play this one. Still not quite as smooth as I'd like, but not anywhere near as terrible as Arma 2 was.

In fairness, ArmA has always and still is just a "for gamers" version of their internationally-used military sim backend software. They probably make enough money from international military organizations that whatever revenue they get from ArmA is chump change :p
That....looks amazing. I hope the engine used in dayz looks this good, and has those sorts of features. If it doesn't, they'd just be shooting themselves in the foot, and almost robbing us of what could be a spectacular game, rather than just a good one. I'd rather wait another 6 months for THIS than some outdated modded arma 2 engine.

Large enough to warrant a sequel to begin production on an engine to be made from the ground up before DayZ was even released.

As I said a couple posts ago, ArmA is just a gamer version of VBS, and given their customer base for VBS2 there was never any doubt that they'd be working on VBS3... and by relation ArmA3 (because that's where ArmA comes from).
I don't think ArmA sales matter as much to Bohemia, because the big prize for them is getting and maintaining military organization support. It's why prior to DayZ they hardly even marketed their games... and almost all of the development goes into VBS, with trickle-down going to their ArmA patches. ... that would be why gameplay itself in ArmA2 (major concern at least for many people in this thread) wasn't as big of an issue for them -- their "primary" customer base was actually demanding support for other military organizations and improved simulations.
According to rockpapershotgun the game has vastly improved on polish. Which is something I'm really looking forward too. Making sure the gameplay quality is there can ensure the game can get a large community.
I have serious buyers remorse. Game runs like absolute garbage and feels exactly like Arma 2. Doesn't even look that good either. Yeah yeah it's an Alpha. I don't expect it to improve that much although I hope I'm wrong.
I got into this last night, and man is it... complicated? thus far.
So many key bindings, and kind of hard to find things in the bindings menus, objectives etc. Still I think it's a matter of time for me to get used to it.
Anyone has an idea why do I get piss poor performance with a 3570k and GF 670? I'm getting around 25-30 FPS regardless of ingame settings with CPU and GPU load hovering around 40-50% while playing. There was one other person on a MP server having the same issues, so at least it seems i got some company. :/
I have a 2500 and a gtx560ti and it runs fine I guess, must be some issue to be fixed. Try reporting it to them, that's what Alpha is for anyways after all.
Could be the server. What's your performance in single player? Having a blast thus far.
Anyone have tips on beating the vehicle mission. Maybe I'm an idiot but my grenades from the vehicle I jacked aren't killing the vehicles before I run out of ammo.
I want to buy but I can't find the system specs and I'm not sure my computer can handle it :c Do you guys think I'll be able to run it with an ATI Radeon HD 5570?

Ignore troops up to that point. Drive through the roadblock, until you see the three cars - check range, set range accordingly, 4 grenades each are sufficient. You only run out of grenades if you fight the footsoldiers which can't really harm you, or if you don't zero in properly.
You also can use normal handgrenades, just be sure that you have at least one grenade left in the vehicle (otherwise the mission "fails").
Edit: normal handgrenades take a long while though.
Edit2: two tries for the vehicle mission, one try each for scuba and helicopter mission, and around a billion now for the infantery mission. Sigh.

Already spent 31 hours playing this game. The scary thing is that there's so much left that BIS has to add to the game; so much I have yet to experience.
Infantry controls feel excellent. CQB feels like Rainbow Six 3.

Getting a modern-day version of RavenShield would be so Godlike.

Downloading the FUCK out of the alpha immediately.
I'm relatively new to ARMA and I have enjoyed it so far (the III series that is). Are you guys planning to set up a group or something? Would be quite fun.
On another note, I do have 3 ARMA III Lite-passes that i can give away

If you still have any, I would love to try the game out.

Game is heavily CPU-dependent. Arma 3 doesn't support hyperthreading (at least not yet) so your i7-920 is as good as an i5-750 in this situation. It's already bad enough that the clock speed isn't quite enough. It's not that i7-920 is bad, it's just that this game probably needs optimization.
Just a heads up, if you're thinking of upgrading your CPU, Intel doesn't make anything for LGA 1366 sockets anymore. Need a new mobo.
Edit I'm having way too much fun with seeing land mines blow people up. I'm a little worried for myself. <_<

Ah ok. I've had this CPU for quite a while now. Pretty sure I'm going to upgrade to Haswell this summer.

Also here is a very recent interview with Marek Spanel, the CEO of BIS, discussing the release. Some very interesting stuff in there:
All I can do is promise that, as long as I am in charge of Bohemia Interactive, if for any reason Steam ceases to operate and no longer serves you our games, I’m prepared to rectify the situation and find an alternative method for keeping your Arma library battle-ready.
I think the next big thing could be opening up Arma 3 to paid user-made content. It’s great to see talented mod-makers pulling off amazing missions, add-ons and mods as free content, but if we manage to find some incentive for the best mod-makers to develop more content, I think we can raise the bar even higher.
Unfortunately, upgrading the Arma 2 massive content library to Arma 3 standards is beyond what we can do in reasonable time. So instead, what we are going to do will be similar to Arma 1: we are going to release the entire Arma 2 library to the community and allow them create any derivative work within Arma 3.
Bought the alpha on release day, and i'm badly disappointed.
They took a really easy route to release the game with basically no content what so ever, saying "well mod-community will make it playable, we will release the campaign and other stuff sometimes after the release for free - date? No date.".
Hooray. Wankers.
Edit: sorry. Forgot the amazing 5 showcases they added.
I'm only a little bit disappointed with the amount of sandbox content. I'm sure they will add more in the coming months. On the other hand, the feel on infantry combat is much much better than in arma2 and Altis is a masterpiece. It is absolutely playable in my opinion and will only improve from here.
first game, I crashed into a tree during parachute and died. Second game, i lost the foot race to a house which had a pistol in there and died to that man. 3rd game, i got lost and didnt make it to the first blue circle -- i had to spend like 15 minutes looking for a gun in which i only found a shitty 9mm sbr ~_~
