Although it is a bit surprising that it will be coming out for the PS3 and not PS4, I am actually happy. One worry of many console owners is that their once a new console is released, their now dated console will be forgotten. This further reinforces the claim that the PS3 will continue to receive love even with the release of the PS4.

Update: 2/5/2015 New Trailer (PV#01) for game has been released. The website has also changed somewhat.

I'm not sure it will be released in Europe. Plenty of the larger brands of JRPGs never release outside of Japan. Though one can hope.
edit, considering the homepage has English content it is likely though.
It's not like it would be the first Persona game to come out outside of Japan. Of course that doesn't mean anything, and Atlus is now part of Sega and I'm not sure I like Sega
Also I don't have a Ps3, so my hopes are on a Ps4 release later on or Gaikai working and the game being on there.

I'm a huge fan of 1 and 2: Tsumi and certainly don't await the fifth installment after what they have done with 3 and 4 -_-
I'm curious about why you think 1 and 2 is better. I've only played 3 and 4, and I liked them a lot. What is it that makes the first 2 better? The main flaws of 3 and 4 imo is the repetitiveness, a lot of the time there's not a lot going on, and I'm not a fan of the battle mechanics. But I doubt that 1 and 2 is better in this respect, as modern games tends to put more focus on storyline. This is why I never tried the earlier games, I figured they would be even more lacking in storyline pacing.
I haven't played the first one, but I played both Persona 2 (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment).
I find the battle mechanics to be better than those of P3 and P4. As of the storyline, they were both really good, especially P2:EP, and I would replay P2:EP over P3 any day. That being said, they aren't without default. You are guided for the entire plot way too much, most of the time, you just can't enter 75% of the buildings just because it's not yet/anymore the time to do it. Difficulty can be harsh too, but this part will mostly depend of your experience in the old Shin Megami Tensei games. If you know the universe and most of the personas, you'll know what to expect and prepare to have awesome combinations.
P1, P2:IS and P2:EP are as close as P3 and P4 are. I would prefer to play P2:EP over P3 not because it's a better game, but because it's a different game, wherease P3 and P4 are "clones" with P4 as a better game (for me at least).
Storywise, both P2s have nothing to be ashamed of compared to the most recent ones. Btw I still love P4 the most, but as a SMT lover, you can't go wrong with trying both P2s.

Opinions opinions... I was a big jrpg fan during PSX time too and I didn't liked P1 and P2 at all. Loved P3 and P4 though, especially P4.
Too bad release is not soon, most likely 1st half of 2015 for NA/EU. But I guess now I do know what will be the last game I'll buy for PS3, before I wasn't sure what would it be, Xillia 2 or KH 2.5 HD.
Was anyone awake when they first announced it? Felt like they were purposely trolling everyone on stream They showed the three games and had Teddy talking forever. At one point, countdown popped up starting from like 5:55:55 and it was at that point we knew what was coming.
But yeah, I think atlus knew of all the hype and just toyed with everyone. Twitch had the stream at +9k views so was pretty interesting. Especially when people began rioting and cussing out atlus. It turned ugly real quick
I played P3 first and found the main characters more memorable than that of P4. P4's game play is more refined and it had a better supporting cast, in terms of social links, villains and minor characters.

Havent touch P4 yet since I gave away my PS2 and they didnt not release it on PS3 classic.

Exactly, like you said. They took P3 and P4 in a direction which I really don't like. The style is more aimed towards kids and it really puts me off.
The openings alone are enough to show the differences:
p3 / p4 can be run perfectly fine on an emulator in 1080p btw. played p4 like halfway through, but then it just got too repetitive and japanese for me.
Surprised to see this thread die out. This game comes out I think in a week or two in Japan, and in the West in February 2017. Really excited for this game as I love megaten games and this game is just incredibly stylish and it has so much personality.
Some more gameplay videos since the last time this thread was updated:
Edit: I just realized that the title of this thead is Winter 2014....that's going to be reopen some old wounds for people who have been waiting for this game for a long time.
personally, I know this will throw people off but while I don't want spoilers, I kinda do want a true ending guide ready for when the western release happens, don't want to do multiple runs of the game to figure out true ending, don't have that kind of time.
Can't blame you for that. In JRPGs true endings are always like, make 1 little choice at this part of the game towards the end to get another ending, or like "oh btw, make this choice 30 hours ago or you have to restart the whole game".
I just don't want to get completely fucked out of an ending because of something that was not really forseeable.

Yeah. I don't want to play, then travel, then play, then travel, then bla bla bla, then back to playing again. For a game like this, it feels like it will break the immersion. A few days without playing is ok, a week is too long.

I know! I can't imagine waiting that long, avoiding spoilers like crazy for this game that I had been waiting for, forever.

Newcomer to the series, haven't played many JRPGs either before except Ni No Kuni, Super Mario RPG for the SNES, the Golden Sun series, and Pokemon. Would I be able to learn and enjoy this game?

Oh certainly. The only reason why I might suggest you to check the other Personas (starting from 3) out, is that sometimes its hard going to prequels when the sequels add so much quality of life features.
But yeah, story wise, its completely distinct, there are a few cameos to previous games, its still pretty much the same "world" , but its not relevant at all.
edit: apparently they did the same for the JP release as well wtf?
Almost zero surprise. Japan is weird about the internet and video. I saw many a game developer rolling their eyes and tweeting at Atlus US asking "Who do I talk to about the Endurance Run?"(Giant Bomb's "lets play" of P4 before Lets Plays were a thing).
edit: apparently they did the same for the JP release as well wtf?
It was a really bad decision on their part, and unfortunately it's stopped a lot of content creators from getting the game. Personally I don't care too much since I'm not streaming the game, and I'm not going to let a bad decision from some execs stop me from enjoying an awesome game
Well this is just a huge tease for me so far on PS3. Don't even mind not having PS4 in the first place since we never did get a Persona on PS3 yet and PS3 version sounds pretty solid.
Anyway first it turns out that the retailer can't deliver my pre-purchase copy for at least couple weeks since apparently PS3 copies weren't being shipped to Finland or some bs, so I cancel that and buy the digital.
Then I get error 80010038 when installing it. Time to try to download it again... If it still doesn't work might have to restore the system.
Glad I don't have that much time to play for the next couple days anyway.
edit: apparently they did the same for the JP release as well wtf?
Yeah, I got the feeling it's the Japanese side who decided to do it and Atlus USA had no choice but to play along.
That's what the press release made it sound like.I know the former Atlus USA PR guy had to pull strings because Atlus JP issued a takedown of a Megaten/Persona content creator named JC a while back, that story was covered on Kotaku and it's unfortunate.
They're a Japanese company so they're just just completely out of touch...

Giant Bomb was talking about this today and reminded me that Nintendo asked them not to talk about "unannounced Smash Brothers characters" when the game was already released in Japan. And they responded that it was already announced and Nintendo was like "not in the US, so you can't talk about it or show video".
So they just didn't cover Smash brothers that much. Japan is weird.
edit: apparently they did the same for the JP release as well wtf?
Yes they did. When the japanese version released I was looking at anything I could. The music was the first thing to get upload and just as fast as they appeared, they were gone. Then playthroughs began to service and I watched some of those and they got taken down. They were relentless. They were consistent and very aggressive with their takedowns. Then they slowed down after a couple weeks and then a couple months later they stopped almost entirely. While they do still strike down a video here or there, they are nowhere near as aggressive/consistent/relentless as they were when the game first came out.
We just have to weather the storm for however long it takes until it passes. In fact we should be grateful that people can even stream to 7/7. Still, while its entirely stupid, its still legal. Which, some of the twitch community fail to understand that. Twitch can't do anything, they have no choice. If Atlus wants a channel taken down they have no choice but to do it.
I also highly doubt this is affecting their sales as much as people think it is. I guarentee you that people have and will continue to buy Persona 5 based on what they watch despite it only being able to be streamed up to 7/7.
Besides all that, I've been having a fucking blast with P5. Its everything I thought it would be although I do feel like P4G is still going to be my number 1 game for a couple reasons.
94 meta score for the game (highest since 2014 for the console). 5 higher than Horizon: Zero Dawn and 6 higher than NieR: Automata and Nioh. Great quarter for the PS4 and gaming in general. Not normal to get that many games above 85 in rating.
Still interesting that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a higher rating when it got a lot of frame rate complaints which should drop it to roughly the same tier.
Anybody have a good compression between the PS3 and PS4 versions? I might be able to get to a PS3 to play it.
Got no complaints about the PS3 version after I got it installed properly. I don't know about PS4 but on PS3 loading times have been surprisingly short.
It's a fairly traditional JRPG anyway so things like lower resolution and FPS shouldn't be actual deal breakers. Does one really need more than 30FPS in a turn based RPG anyway.
Finally started playing it, just completed the third boss, I'm absolutely loving it so far. Its shaping up to be one of the best game I've ever played.
I'm really torn between playing this or Nier in the near future. This was totally off my radar but I can't stop hearing about it lately. Nier was on my radar and I haven't stopped hearing about that either lol. I'm sure I'll get to both but damn, good time for games I guess. Gonna be a good summer.

I'd get Persona 5 because you get so many hours per dollar. Nier is def a must have too.

Oh I'm 100% playing both lol. Nier was just at the top of my priority list but I've heard so much about P5 lately that I can't decide which to do first now...
Yes this game is amazing. My first entry into Persona, and absolutely love it. I toned difficulty down to Easy though, as I was getting wrecked trying to find the 2 keys in the first dungeon to get past the swinging scythes...got so frustrated lol.
I'm pretty hooked now, but it took about 30 hours for it to feel like it was getting good. The flow was too broken in the beginning with many consecutive days where you were forced to sleep or not do anything, but there's plenty to do now.

Funny you mention that because I'm starting to feel sort of the opposite. + Show Spoiler +
The first Palace and the build-up was very long and drawn out and gave you a lot of time to naturally build the characters and backstory and introduce new squadmates. The second and third palaces not only felt much shorter (maybe I'm just overleveled?) but the introduction of Yusuke and Makoto felt a bit rushed. I don't mean intro to the characters themselves but how quickly they suddenly get wrapped up in the actual Metaverse stuff. I still like all the characters so it doesn't really bother me. I'm still having a blast with the game. I just finished the third palace last night, I'm on like 7/9 or so. And like you said, having more choice and freedom each day after the 1st palace ends is a lot more fun and interesting. I just hope as they wrap up the rest of the squad (I've been paying enough attention outside the game to know I only have 2-3 teammates left) that the story and evil characters get more interesting.
Like P4, the characters they introduce later on feel more and more extraneous. As they layer on characters to care about, the villains play less of a central role and get less time. The whole game has one to many dungeons and party members.
I enjoy the time management aspect in these games the most, so it's very tedious when you don't even get a nighttime action on the majority of the days and have to wait for the next day to do something meaningful.

Dungeon dive for as long as possible and sock up on SP items to sustain your team through the dive. I got through most of the Palaces in 2-3 trips. Then you get unlimited nighttime actions.
On May 04 2017 03:29 chocorush wrote: Right. The issue is "You better go to sleep now" for story reasons, which largely goes away at the end of the game.
Those are often story days that don’t allow you to build up social links or take actions. Just accept them a plot dumps with some minor stat building. You get full control during the “missions” once you open the palace.
The previous 2 games (P3 and P4) were similar. You don't have the ability to do everything at the start of the game so it forces you to skip certain days and nights for "story reasons" when the game hasn't introduced yet the mechanic that is supposed to be available during that time of day.

P3 and P4 were the same in this regard. The first few characters are your classmates and other schoolmates a year apart from you. They also covered the necessary elements in the game (fire, wind, ice and lightning) while covering basic healing and physical attacking archetypes. The later characters were things like a kid, a dog, a robot, a mascot and specialized in things like light/dark skills that are extraneous.
And I remember that unused characters fall behind in levels in the games I played (I skipped P3:FES and P4G).

I'm on the fourth palace now, and I think my only complaint so far is that the storyline that segues into the 3rd palace is so freaking boring. The first palace felt too long imo because they hold your hand for too long to explain all the mechanics, also because I watched all the gameplay/story trailers, I felt like everything was redundant, but maybe thats on me and not a critique of the game.

Yeah the third palace might have just been a weak spot. I'm also in the fourth now and I enjoyed the story leading up to it quite a bit more.
Finally had free time this weekend to start this game. I clocked in 30 hours in a single weekend and actually woke up early instead of sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday. I don't think I've done that for any game in a loooooooooong while.
It feels like the start of the game is longer compared to P3 and P4. I'm only level 17-18 when I stopped and I already clocked in 30 hours. The first palace is already a full fledged palace instead of an abbreviated, training dungeon like we had in P3 and P4.
I'm having a severe case of the Mondays this morning. Need help, lol.

I feel you. I'm starting the 5th palace right now and so far, all the palaces are closely intertwined with the character they are introducing. The 3rd palace is an exception. It only has a tenuous connection to the character it is introducing. It feels tacked on. I like Makoto's character but they could replace that palace with almost anything else and it wouldn't change the story that much. Can't say the same thing about the other palaces I've played so far.
Yusuke is the biggest surprise to me. I like his character far more than I was anticipating. I normally don't like artistic characters since they are usually portrayed as annoyingly weird and/or emo. So far, Yusuke's quirkiness is endearing and his comic relief moments hit the mark. His banter with Futaba is hilarious.
Just got myself a lvl 74 Siegfried with my protagonist being lvl 51. Could have probably gone for something even more overpowered but that's good enough for now.
I'm at 74 hours and at calling card phase of palace 6. Really have to appreciate what they did with this game, definitely worth the long wait. Probably have to get Playstation 4 or 5 just for Persona 6 if that ever gets made.
Romanced Makoto although Takemi and Hifumi seemed like great options too. Attempting harem just to see what would happen was tempting but resisted it.
Ann and Ryuji kind of fell out of my battle party and social link interactions too once the more interesting characters started showing up.
led to some interesting choices at the end of the game
Overall my final impression of the game is "wow what a grind." I can't really say I enjoyed it as much as Persona 3 and 4
What was your criticisms of the game? Also what difficulty did you play on?
Curious about this as well, since I'm considering going back and playing the older ones after I finish. This is my first Persona game. I'm at ~110 hours (a bit of idle pause menu time in there though) and I think I'm approaching the end. I like it a lot but it has a few things that bug me.
I'm a very slow player, almost 150 hours and midway through the 7th palace. I'm almost done with all the confidants. I spent quite a bit of time fusing every single persona I can while leveling. So far, I haven't bothered with fusing higher level persona because it's expensive. Saving my money until the end before I try to fuse everything. I think I just crossed 70+% of the compendium at level 61-62.

Granted, I had played Persona 3 and 4 back in my first two years of college, so around 2008-2009, so my memory of those aren't perfect
But I don't remember those games taking as long to complete. I felt there was way more downtime between dungeons in P5 so I felt the majority of the game is sitting through text, most of which aren't that interesting. Whenever the MC got a text message I ended up just skipping through it because it was so repetitive. Honestly I was kind of bored with the game. I just felt that I did not get this feeling with P3 and P4.
P3 also had a better story IMO (although its dungeons and combat system aren't as refined). And while P4 and P5 both have "mystery" stories, I felt Persona 4 pulled it off better
I played P5 on Normal difficulty. I got a game over a handful of times only. Not complaining about its difficulty
That's strange. P4 for me had the longest downtime between dungeons. It has the same number of dungeons that P5 has, but it's much easier to complete them in one visit. P5's dungeons are harder to complete in one visit and some force you to visit them multiple times, even excluding the times that you are required to visit for story reasons but can't explore much.
P5 is just longer, period. A lot of days in P3 and P4 are taken up by visiting social links multiple times before you can rank up. P5 lets you use the Fortune confidant to skip those days and there are still plenty of things to do.
I think the dungeons are responsible for the biggest increase in length. I actually liked it. P3 and P4's dungeons are randomly generated like mementos. P5's dungeons are longer, have more story elements occurring while inside the dungeon, have some minor puzzles to compete and require use of the stealth mechanic.
I don't mind the phone messages that have story based dialogue. These are modern teenagers, after all, and that is part of the world building. It's the constant "let's go to a palace" and "I'm available to hang out today" that are annoying.
Also, it may just be me, but it seems the confidant schedule is not as regular as the ones in P3 and P4. And there is a lack of information on which confidant is available on which day until the actual day of.
